Does Firefox now "read a page ahead" for WordPress sites?

Hi there,
I've just noticed something odd in Firefox 26.0. Using Fiddler, I see that when I am browsing WordPress sites, the browser is requesting an additional page (only the source page, not the links on the page) to the one I am actually looking at. In effect it appears to be browsing "ahead" one page along the Wordpress menu, storing this page in case that happens to be the one I will look at next. This activity also happens in Safe Mode and does not happen with the latest version of Chrome.
Is this a new feature and, if so, how do I switch it off?

That did the trick cor-el, many thanks!
For anyone else reading this thread, the following article might prove useful: http://www.ghacks.net/2013/04/27/firefox-prefetching-what-you-need-to-know/
It appears that the WordPress page isn't using rel="prefetch" as described in the above article, but instead FF is prefetching the page indicated by rel="next".

Do you mean that you can't find the "Choose" button on the top left of Adobe Contribute? I gues I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "Page list".
If you are talking about something else, please give us more details as well as let us know what version of Adobe Contribute you are referring to.

Firefox does not keep a history after you clear yours. I understand what you mean. Firefox does not send your browsing history to Mozilla. However Firefox has components from Google, like Anti-phishing. Due to these Google components, Google Privacy Policy must be followed.

*1)Does Firefox latest version obey/confirm to the rules for user account control for windows xp sp3 ?
* 2)Need I do anything specific at the time of installation and/or setting up/configuring preferences ?
*3)Or do I need to install Firefox separately for the limited users or in each users account ?
*4)Would it be possible/desirable/necessary to install it directly into some folder of the user other than the common program files folder ?
*5)In any of these situations, should I or should I not make the installation with 'Run As' admin privilege.
*6)If I install separately for the user/s, with/without admin privileges, will the install write to , or enable user activity to write to, the other common windows folders(where user write is otherwise disallowed).
Please kindly clarify. I am waiting for an answer before I reinstall Firefox and a lot of other apps(these were done earlier before creating the user accounts. Please note that I do not mind installing separately for any/all users. But security will be my preference as much as possible(PARANOIA). A far as I recall from when I did use XP the procedure was to install Firefox using an Admin account, preferably the Administrator account.
By doing that the Firefox installer would create Firefox within the programs directory. And each separate user account could then use Firefox. Importantly each user account has a Firefox profile and so have their own separate and individual bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache etc.
IIRC UAC was not available for XP. Permissions and what you could do would also differ; I seem to remember; depending on whether it was using FAT or NTFS. In some setups a knowledgeable admin account user could probably fully access any other account.

• I recently had to reload FireFox. Firefox now acts as a conduit for all kinds of unwanted programs and alternative crap.

Firefox has never done this before.

hello, this sounds like you did download firefox from a bogus site which bundles the browser with ad&malware. please only download firefox from the official location at mozilla!
* go into the windows control panel/programs section, sort it by install-date and remove all entries that were installed around the time you added the presumably adware-bundled firefox. also have a look for other unwanted toolbars...
* run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.
* go to getfirefox.com and download a fresh installer for firefox. after installation go to firefox > addons > extensions and see if there are any toolbars listed - if so, reset the browser.

• Why does Firefox 4.0 keep asking me for some "32-bit plugin" item that requires restarting the browser, and then I keep getting the SAME MESSAGE (this only shows up when I am in my Yahoo e-mail!)?

This only happens when I am typing an outgoing e-mail on my Yahoo account!

Please do the following.
Click Help | Check For Updates. The option to update should appear and version 3.6.17 should download and install.
However, sometimes things go pear-shaped and you get version 3.5.19. If that happens, repeat the same steps to update to 3.6.17.
Once you have 3.6.17 installed, you'll get the opportunity to update to the current version which is 4.0.1 Please don't do that for the moment because you first of all have to update your plugins. To do the latter, please do the following.
Go to http://www.java.com/en/ and install the latest version of Java.
Update Adobe Shockwave for Director via http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
Update Adobe Flash via http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Update Adobe Reader via http://get.adobe.com/reader/?promoid=BUIGO
For security details regarding the Adobe updates, see: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa11-02.html
Once you've updated all those, go to Help | Check For Updates again to update to version 4.0.1

• Firefox is showing a grey globe for secure site when other browsers are showing a lock icon.

We have several sites that have SSL Certificates. When the website switches to HTTPS, Firefox still shows our pages with a grey globe. Sites (like Amazon) are showing they are secure displaying HTTPS pages. Other browsers are displaying our pages secure like they should.

a grey globe should only be shown for a "secure" page when there's mixed content on that page

• Using Lion Server as a web server for Wordpress sites?

Is anyone doing this? I have a few low traffic Wordpress sites I'd like to move to a Lion server I already have at MacMiniColo to try and reduce my costs.
Obviously I'll have to install MySQL and MySQL Workbench for the databases, which I'm fairly comfortable with, however I'm not sure what the best route for FTP access to the WP directories is. I've looked at Rumpus but it's just a little too pricy for my needs.
Does anyone have any advice?

John, I guess you did install MySQL and got Wordpress running? I use the default location for web sites on Lion server. So my site is in /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/wordpress/. Since the directory is owned by _www I use root to retrieve and put files under this directory. My own user account would not have sufficient rights. It is not safe to use root with ssh with a password, so you will have to make sure you can only login as root with an ssh key. Therefore edit /etc/sshd_config and make sure that a line with 'PermitRootLogin without-password' is present. sshd or your server should be restarted then.
On you local mac you can use the terminal to generate a key. Use 'ssh-keygen'. Here (and on various other web pages) you can find how to do this:
http://coolestguyplanettech.com/secure-ssh-keys-connection-with-remote-passwords -osx-10-6-linux/
On the server you will have to put the authorized_keys file in /var/root/.ssh/
Now you can use cyberduck and let it authenticate with the key you have generated (id_rsa if you use the web page I pointed to). Then you can go to the wordpress directory and upload or edit files.

• Why only for my PayPal website does Firefox render a glitched page?

I use PayPal for many of my online purchases. While I have been able to open my PayPal website, it displays as text only in a column on the left side of my screen. This display is not user friendly. This is the only website that this happens on; all my other secure sites open and display just fine. What's the problem with PayPal not working on Firefox? I can go to Chrome and the website opens just fine but that's a bit inconvenient since I'm vested in Firefox. Could I have something set wrong in my Tools and Options or is this strictly a Firefox problem? Help!

To jscher: Yep, it shows all that. And to my recollection, I've never set up any exceptions.
To cor-el: I saw nothing in that area concerning CSS content at all.
Does solving this problem seem a little more complex than it should be? :-)

• Why does Firefox now ask for my master password every time I check my gmail account? Sometimes, but not always, for my Yahoo mail account. Never did this before. Thank you.

Don't know how to add any more details.

Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
* Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Private+Browsing
* In Private Browsing mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended, so websites won't remember you.
* Do not use Clear Recent History to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

• Since March 5th Firefox will not load pages except for Homepage.

Firefox just says "connecting" on the tab and after thirty minutes the page doesn't load. I have tried restarting my computer a few times, and have uninstalled then reinstalled Firefox. It is not a problem with the connection and does not appear to be a problem with my security. I've been using Firefox for over a year on this computer, then suddenly this. What do I do?

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.
Under Advanced, Select Network.
Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button.
Check the settings.
Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set
to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your
updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow
Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
* Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
* Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

• Why does Firefox open another Start Page tab everytime I hit the home key (which take me to my homepage on the current tab)?

When I hit the home key Firefox takes me back to my homepage (AOL) but also opens up a new Mozilla Firefox Start Page tab. I end up with a whole bunch of unwanted tabs.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== always

Hello Ginna.
Please check the following:
Click on Tools> Options.
Then click on General.
Now, it should say: http://aol.com/ (or similar), but please check if it has anything after that. For example, if there is a | after it, that tells FF to open up 2 pages when you hit the home button: AOL and the other page, which in this case is a blank page.
If you see a | in there, go ahead and adjust it or remove it, if you'd like. If not, please report back here and let me know!
