Does Force Quitting The App have Any Harmful Effects?

I have an iPod 3G.
To force quit an app, I heard that for newer models like mine, you have to hold down the hold button, and when the iPod asks you if you want to shut down, you press the home button for five seconds until the iPod returns to the springboard.
I heard that force quitting an app is good because it stops it from running in the background.
Is using this method harmful to your iPod in anyway at all?

iPod touch and iPhone run apps in what is known as a "sandbox". That is, each app is a separate process and starting, stopping, or force quitting has no effect on the OS or other apps.
As far as background apps go, the only one I can think of is Music. Everything else is the only app running at the time. The only time you should have to force-quit is if the app hangs up.
BTW, I think you are getting how the iPhone software operates confused with Android - which does keep a number of apps running in the background.

  • IPhoto freezes when i open the app, each time it is open on the same photo and when i try to swap to another photo it freezes until i force quit the app.

I have recently come back from a trip to Venice, i uploaded my photos to iPhoto to view and edit them, half way through the photos from day three of my trip it has frozen on a particular photo. I force quit the app and then re open it and it is still on the same image with the exact same problem. I am now unable to view any photos of my trip as they're all on iPhoto and i cannot access the albums because they are stuck on this one photo. I need to be able to access them by 11th March because i have a project due in about our trip and we need to include the best of our photos and at the moment i am being stopped from even looking at them. PLEASE HELP!

    What version of iPhoto?
    Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I am using Mac osX 10.9.2
I can see that I am not the only one with this problem.

LOL... this is what I just had to look up... it's not exactly clear or apparent, is it?
When in Full screen mode.. just press Command-F. Voila!

    2. After force quit application behaviour can not be controlled?
    3. Force Quit is an abnormal termination and it could be any thing which cannot be controlled by the application as the application is flushed out by Mac OS X itself whitout giving any event to  the application?
    4. Abort call send by OS can be handled by application or its a OS related call? Can application handle such scenarios itself?

  • I upgraded to iTunes 10.5, and now when I plug in my iPhone 3gs i get the Beach Ball of Eternal Sadness. I have to Force Quit the app, and I cannot sync my iPhone. This also means I cannot upgrade to the new iOS5.

My OS is current and up to date. No problems there.... Intel based iMac, relatively new....
But since i did the upgrade to iTunes 10.5 i cannot sync my iPhone. It's a 3gs. Oddly - my wifes iPhone will load and sync (it is a first gen iPhone, btw).
Neither device is, or evr has been jailbroken. mY iPhone was syncing perfectly until the upgrade to 10.5.

Had the same thing happen to me when I tried syncing my iPhone this a.m. - talked to Apple 7 hours ago and evidently there's an "issue" with the iTunes server. The Apple adviser told me to try syncing in an hour. Well, rather than do that, I've continued to check Twitter, searching on "itunes sync" or "itunes server" - seems the problem's still going on.
I'm going to wait it out til tomorrow. Or whenever.
The REASON I was synching is that ever since the iOS 5 "upgrade" photos that were in albums synced from iPhoto had disappeared. Not all the photos, just all the photos in some albums. Weird.
Too many bugs in iOS 5 (syncing, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.). They should have waited til it was right before releasing it.

  • I can no longer open firefox. I get a message that it is already open but when I try to force quit the app it is not there.

I am running IMacs with an OS10.6x operating system. This problem has occurred on several of my machines now. I can still open firefox from alternate profiles on the same machine, but the student profile will give me the message that it is already open and can only have one instance running at a time.

Make sure that the profile that Firefox wants to use and that is specified in profiles.ini still exists. If that profile isn't found then you get that same error message.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When I try opening iPhoto on my iMac (OSX 10.9.2) it says I must first update the application; when I try doing so from the App store, it says there are no updates available. I have not renamed or moved iPhoto which was preinstalled. How to solve?

When I try opening iPhoto on my iMac (OSX 10.9.2) it says I must first download the update; when I try doing so from the App store, it says there are no updates available.  Stuck in a classis Catch-22 - any ideas how I might solve the problem?

Thanks a lot for your swift response. And sorry if it was a bit too hectic to go through my detailed query (which I did because it was misunderstood when I asked previously). As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.
Thanks for your help; hope this wasn't extremely long.

Appreciate your help Ian and others.   I have since uninstalled FCS and reinstalled FCXP only to get the same thing. Loading FCXP stalls at "Looking for Compressor Support".  When I first downloaded FCXP from the App store I didn't notice that FCS was being placed in it's own folder.  It's not something I did manually.  Although moved into it's own folder with FCXP on the same drive.  I was not able to open FCS apps. They would load and then "quit unexpectantly".  They opened just fine before I downloaded FCXP.  Do I need to purchase Compressor so that FCXP recognizes it? It seems this is where it stalls. It doesn't explain however why my computer "FREEZES" while doing this.  I am in the process of re-installing Lion to see if this helps, otherwise I am at a complete loss.

I downloaded the iOS7 and I can't force quit the open apps. I was told, "Force-quitting apps is a little different though: Instead of tapping and holding on the icon, you flick a thumbnail up to dismiss it." Unfortunately, that didn't work. Any comments please & thank you

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Prior to loading 1OS7 it was easy to force quit applications that were still open by double clicking and seeing an a red "x" you had to click on.
It doesn't work that way with the new operating system and the instructions that were given "Force-quitting apps is a little different though: Instead of tapping and holding on the icon, you flick a thumbnail up to dismiss it."
    Do not work.
I am looking for anyone who can help figure this out.

How do I eliminate this glitch?  Music spontaneously starts, stops, stutters at random and I'm not even using that app. Repeated attempts to pause the song and close the app have no affect. Just keeps popping on and off randomly no matter what I'm doing at the time. I tried double-clicking the Home button which brings up all of the active apps, touched and held the Music icon until all the icons started wiggling, tapped the Close icon in the upper left corner of the Music app to close the app completely, but the app is still open and still randomly stuttering. I did notice that the play button icon flashes in the upper right corner of the screen when this happens and it appears and disappears in concurrence with the Music app stuttering. When the music starts, the icon appears and when it stops, the icon disappears again. When the music stutters on and off, the icon appears and disappears rapidly and in sync with that random glitch. This just started today for no apparent reason. I turned the iPad off, waited 30 seconds and turned it back on. As soon as it was finished starting up, the same music glitch began again immediately. I'm using iOS 6.1.3.

Well, no one seems to have any answers or ideas for me, I'll update what I've been able to accomplish.
I reloaded all 14 disks in the time frame of watching Lord of the Rings on Fri. nite.
Funny thing is, the first disk pulled the info from the online store! Hooray!
Wait-then all the next 13 could find no information online...what the heck is up with that? So I MANUALLY assign each disk a new track # to co-inside with each disk, spent about 2 hours doing that.
But still, itunes tells me my playlist is too large, there's not enough space on the ipod. so I unchecked 1 1/2 disks (I'd listen to 1/2 of disk 1 previously) and voila! there's my ipod full of my book. Finally. But what a lot of bother just to keep things in order!

Update config testsuite on 4.0.0_fixes branch to force kill the app server before running any tests when the app server is Tomcat. The regression runs were hanging on this branch when going to run the config suite because the Tomcat server isn't shutting down cleanly at the end of the MXUnit run. I believe this is an issue with the version of ActiveMQ we are using. Since I don't think we want to update ActiveMQ on this branch force killing the Tomcat server will workaround the problem.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried this on another machine running the same version of Blackboard. It works fine.
Only difference is that the machine that has the JVM crash is running on Fujitsu PrimePower and the OS is Solaris 9 (but twigged for PrimePower).
The one where it runs and starts up successfully is running on SunFire (OS is Solaris 10).
I am wondering if there is a problem with the JVM loading required libraries because of the OS being different versions.
Any leads on this is welcomed. Thank you.

Hello: Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Could you specify the Mac OS X version and also what computer you
are using it on, with some detail? Some of these kinds of issues, while
they may seem the same across various years of OS X, can have
different causes and also different cures.
With that information, someone may be capable of researching a reply
most suited to try & see if it works in your computer + OS X system.
One idea, which may/may not help, would be to start the computer
from its most recent OS X DVD install disc, unless it has OS X 10.7
or Later, where there is a Recovery partition on the HDD to boot from.
Then use Disk Utility> repair disk, while there, also repair permissions.
    Thanks.
    Good luck & happy computing!
