Does format of blank disk matter for DVD machines?

I need to make an audition DVD. I will use iDVD. I have no idea what equipment will be used to evaluate the audition. Does it matter if I burn on DVD-R or DVD+R media? Can run-of-the mill DVD machines bought at WalMart read disks burned with either format?
Thank you.

Hi
Brand is also of importance.
I only use Verbatim
Speed is also a main problem maker.
I set burn speed down to x1 with very few problematic DVDs
Free space on internal boot hard disk - never under 25Gb free space.
Good Luck
Yours Bengt W

  • Does the amount of VRAM matter for AP3 when considering the graphics options in the new iMacs?

The graphics options go from 512MB to 2GB. The cards themselves (6750, etc) are very capable, but does the amount of VRAM matter? Will 512MB be sufficient for AP3 or should I go for the 2GB of graphics RAM? Why or why not? Thanks.

Well Aperture is one of the few programs in the world that will havely rely on the GPU. 512 MB should be suffiecient (*), but more will bring more speed to Aperture.
*: At least it is in my machine, though using brushes extensively will slow things down quite a bit.

  • Formatting 1 TB External HD for Time Machine

    Hi all -
This is my first post here. I just got a 1 TB Western Digital My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and now I'm formatting it. At least, I think I am. I'm not sure I'm doing it right. In Disk Utility it says "newfs_hfs: /dev/partition size not a multiple of 4k and the progress bar keeps moving along, but I can't tell if anything is actually happening. It also says the drive isn't mounted although I have it plugged into a USB port.
Please help me to understand what I'm doing, if I'm doing anything wrong, and if I am, how I can do it right. I bought this for the express purpose of backing up my entire system with Time Machine and I will be EXTREMELY upset if I've messed things up right from the start.
Thanks in advance for any and all helpful responses.
    -- Jeff

I'm having the same problem with the 1TB WD My Book external HD on my MacBookPro running Leopard. The HD appears to come pre-formatted in FAT32, but I can't find any useful operations in Disk Utility to format it. There is no Partition tab. The drive appears to be verified as OK in FAT32 format, but Time Machine wants to reformat it ... when it tries, it fails immediately, leaving the drive name changed from MY BOOK to disk1s1. The erase tab is the only one which seems relevant, but if I try to set the format to Mac OS extended (journaled) as I understand it should be, it fails again, immediately, leaving an unreadable drive, which I have to erase again, setting it to FAT32, whereupon I;m back to square 1. Disk Utility seems a very lightweight utility, and I;m wondering if it ids properly installed, because this is really poor. I had the same problem with my Maxtor 500Gb external drive, which is why I bought the WD drive - solely for Time Machine, but I'm really struggling on this issue. I'm a new-to-mac user, btw. Can anyone help me - probably more step-by-step than you're used to! Thanks

  • Can't install ML. Disk used for time machine

When I choose my machintosh HD drive to install mountain lion says "This disk is used for time machine backups". HELP!!!

Although this may be too late for the OP, here's the answer: If you see a Backups.backupdb folder on your main harddrive, either remove it or rename it. That seems to be the only qualifier for calling a disk a Time Machine Backups disk as far as the installer is concerned.

  • Why no disks listed for time machine

I got my MACBOOK yesterday. When I ran time machine for the first time. it shows: A storage for time machine backups isnt set up. I clicked "set up time machine" , and click: choose backup disk. Howeve, none disks are listed, neither the internal HD, nor a portable disk connect to my MAC.
Don'tknow whether i missed anything, or just did something stupid. Can anybody help? Thanks a lot!!

I have the same problem with my EZQuest 120GB HD that I have been using for many years. I sent all folders/files to trash before trying Time Machine which failed to see this disk. In disk utility, it checks ok (repair permissions and repair disk) but it fails to recognize the disk for partition.

  • Verify Disk failed for Time Machine backup disk

Thread <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7930301&#7930301> discussed a similar issue, but it was closed without an answer so I'm opening a new one.
After a power failure I ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on my boot disk and Verify Disk on another that I use to store media files; neither had significant problems. Then I ran Verify Disk (verify, not repair; and disk, not permissions) on my Time Machine backup disk. It started spitting out the errors shown below. The time remaining counted up to 16 minutes, but wasn't coming down very fast so I left it running overnight. My machine is set to not sleep or spin down the disks. The next evening it was down to 12 minutes left, and was still spitting out the same errors. The second evening it was done, having failed out as shown in this log file excerpt:

Upon the 2nd restart the system booted and seems to be OK, but I'm leery of running another Verify Disk.
What's going on? Are those errors anything to worry about? Is it possible to run Verify Disk on a Time Machine backup disk? What about Repair Disk?

Any time Disk Utility says you need to repair a disk, you need to repair it. Period.
So run it. If it fails to repair everything, run it again (and again) until it either repairs everything or can't repair any more. If it can't repair it, post back and we'll discuss options.
There's no point in running +Verify Disk+ on an external drive; just run +Repair Disk.+ The only time +Verify Disk+ is needed is for your internal HD (because you can't repair the disk you're running from).
And you need to do that again because of the forced power-down. Any time there's an abnormal shutdown, it's possible the file system on your internal HD can be damaged. Usually it isn't, but it's possible. If that says you need to repair it, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disc and use it's copy of DU. Post back if you need to do this but don't know how.

  • New larger disk drive for Time Machine ..having trouble using it.

I must be missing something simple here. My Time Machine drive was getting pretty full so I went out and bought a larger drive. I assumed I could copy everything on the old drive to the new one ..then start up Time Machine and point it to the new drive and be in business. Not so. When I tried to copy the contents from one disk to the other the process locked up after about an hour. All activity stopped and I had no files on the new drive. To troubleshoot I simply copied a small folder from the smaller Time Machine drive to the new one..and it copied fine. However I noticed the date on the copied file was current so I assume my process is not a good one anyway as all the dates will be lost. Guess that will screw up Time Machine (after all what is time if its all the same ?). So ..how do I use a new larger drive for Time Machine..without loosing all the old stuff that is already saved. If I just select change disk from the Time Machine panel I assume I will only get backups from now ...and nothing older (from the old disk). I do not want to keep the older disk connected. So what am I missing here ??

  • Extend disk space for Time machine?

    Hi,
We can now use 2 disk drives at one location to keep our backup files with Time Machine, thanks to Mountain Lion
Behavior is that both disks will end-up with the same backed-up files.
Is it possible to make it such that the 2 disks complement each other so that a file is back up on one disk only? The outcome being that MacOS sees the 2 disks more as a single but LARGER disk for Time Machine.
The problem I am trying to solve is that my Time-Capsule is starting to be too small for my needs and I would like to extend the storage capacity through a 2nd drive connected directly to my Mac.
    Thanks

There are ways you can continue using the TC by just adding a larger external drive to it. See:
My Time Capsule is too small to back-up my Mac(s). Now what?
Note that third-party NAS drives won't work reliably with Time Machine, and neither will a hard drive connected to a wireless router (even an Apple AirPort base station). As long as you've already got the TC, you might as well continue using it in conjunction with a larger drive or hardware RAID setup.

  • Hard drive disk space for DVD processing

I have only a few Gb available on my boot drive but I have a large external hard drive with over 300 Gb free space on which I have my DVD projects. I get the error message that my drive does not contain enough space for burn processing. Is there any way to tell iDVD to use the external drive for this, since it has more than enough space?

Is there any way to tell iDVD to use the external drive for this, since it has more than enough space?
No -- and by the way, if you only have 'a few Gb available' on your boot drive, you may possible get into problems with the OS. The general rule of thumb is to keep from 10% to 15% of your boot hard drive free for OS use.

  • Formatting the Hard Disk with recovery DVD's

I'm having a L505 S5996 laptop and it takes a longer time to boot. So I thought to format the HD and install a fresh copy of windows and other drivers from my recovery dvds. There is only one HD partition in my laptop but when I open the disk management window it shows three HD partitions. These two hidden partitions are named as "Recovery Partitions". So I want to know the formatting of HD will result in erasing all these hard disk partitions(including the hidden partitions) in my laptop. If so please tell me the correct way of formatting the HD without loosing pre-installed image of Windows.

if you want to return it back to factory. as in exactly how it was when you opened the box and turned it on. you can select recovery to factory out of box when you either run the recovery media or hold zero during boot and use the recovery partitions.

  • How to format an external drive used for time machine

My 150 Gig external hard drive showed too full for a time machine backup. It only showed 20 gig left. So I moved the time machine backup on it to the trash to make room for a new one. This did nothing. With the files in the trash the drive still shows full even though it has no time machine backup on it.
So I would like to know how I can format this drive again to get it to accept a brand new time machine backup. Or how do I get time machine to recognize the drive as empty instead of full.
I now know I should have at least a 500 gig drive to let time machine make it's plethora of backups. But the 150 gig drive is what I have right now to backup an 80 gig hard drive and I would like to start from scratch.
    Thanks,
    JJ Bula

With the files in the trash the drive still shows full
You need to empty the Trash before anything is actually removed from the drive.
If you want to completely erase the drive, launch Disk Utility, select the drive, go to the Erase pane and click "Erase".

  • Video editing causing enormous disk usage for Time Machine

As I do a lot of work with iMovie, my hard disk is rapidly running out of space. Should I be excluding certain folders from backing up by Time Machine?
Anything I can do to recover the hard disk space?

If TM backs up while you are editing a large file of any type, yes it will backup the file.
I suggest using a separate folder for all your video editing and exclude it from the TM backup.
As to recovering HD space, that's a touchy point, but once you exclude your video files, at least it won't fill up any faster than normal.
I would let TM take care of deleting old files in the normal manner.
The only work-around would be to delete the entire TM backup and start over. If you use a new HD you can still recover data from the old TM backup until you are sure you never need it.

  • Does formatting the macbook pro's hard-disk many times harms it?

    Hello everyone,
I want to format my macbook pro, but before i do the formatting, because i formatted it before many times
So, does formatting the hard disk many time reduce the performance of the hard disk? and makes it less doing its jobs than before?
or it is fine to do format as many times as i want? Because i want to install the system again
    Thanks guys

You shouldn't have a problem. If you do it a lot (but a lot) of times maybe your hard drive could have some problems. But when you format the disk the only thing you do is restarting the partitioning table. If you securely erase your content all disk will be set to 0 values and maybe will have better performance.
You shouldn't worry about it. If you use a SSD you shoud consider a little more than with a HDD. SSD's havve a number writting cicles. But with a really intensive use for a normal-advanced user a good SSD can last more than 5 years without a problem.
My experience with a Windows computer tells me that after reinstalling Windows more than 30 times, in all benchmarks HDD scores the same.
With mac I've been more lucky and I only had to reinstall once!
    Go on with your formatting!

  • Do we always need a blank disk for a back up

Why does one have to insert a blank disk (CD or DVD) to make a back up of itunes library new items even if there´s enough space left in the disk since the last back up? Does it not work as a multiple session CD or DVD burning? If not, what´s the advantage of using this possibility of safeguarding the lybrary items? It seems it would be better to create a multiple session CD or DVD using another "burner", even if doing so one would not be able to restore playlists information and this sort of things. Is the only other option to consolidate the itunes lybrary in one location on a hard disk? But this is not, in turn, the safest way to keep it, is it?

*Does it not work as a multiple session CD or DVD burning?*
Yes, it does not work as a multi-session disc.
Is the only other option to consolidate the itunes lybrary in one location on a hard disk?
    No.
You can copy the iTunes folder to just about anywhere, as many times as you want.
