Does Frontrow/Quicktime upscale to 720p on TV?

I have just bought a 42" TV.
It has great reviews - but is apparently lacking in it's ability to de-interlace and upscale. So give it a good HD signal, it will provide a good HD picture.
As I understand it - my mac will be sending a 720p signal (via DVI) anyway, so the strength or weakness of my TV will make no difference.
Does Frontrow automatically upscale my source video? I've read somewhere that the video card might upscale automatically (I'm using a GeForce 8600M GT, on my MBP 2.2)
I know Quicktime automatically de-interlaces. Are there any settings I need to change for upscaling?
Is watching via VLC going to look better than Frontrow does? (I've read VLC upscales really well).
Basically what do I do to get the best picture from rental movies and TV shows from my Mac? (pity we can't rent HD on a Mac!)

you need to put the movie into itunes and it also needs to be in an appletv supported format.
if the movie is 720p and is in appletv format, then yes it will stream as 720p to the appletv.

  • Why does my QuickTime Player tells me "Please Install Apple Application Support"

After installing QuickTime, when double clicking on icon it returns with "Please Install Apple Application Support" and does not open the application.  I have tried to reinstall the software 4 times with the same results.
    Thanks for any help

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the QuickTimeInstaller.exe installer file to your hard drive (don't run the install on line and don't start the install just yet:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the QuickTimeInstaller.exe and select "Extract to QuickTimeInstaller". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called QuickTimeInstaller.
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does the QuickTime Player launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Why does my quicktime player verson 10.2 somtimes read avi files and other times it wont recognize them?

Why does my quicktime player version 10.2 sometimes read AVI video and other times it will not recognize that same file. I have a video card that sometimes it will read then the next time it recognizes the card but will not open the video. Message says "quicktime does not recognize this file.
Whats up with that ??? Any help will be most appreciated!

AVI is a container just like MKV, WMV, MOV, and MPEG. It is possible to use many different compression formats aka. codecs in an AVI container.
Think of the container - AVI as being an envelope, and the compressed video in it as a letter. The letter may be in a language you cannot read even though you know how to open the envelope.
Historically QuickTime did have some built-in ability to use AVI files and some formats in those files, this used to be further improved by installing the free Perian (for Mac only). However with Mavericks Apple have removed the ability for QuickTime X aka. QuickTime Player 10 to use AVI files, it now really only accepts MPEG4 or H.264.
It is still possible to install QuickTime 7.6.6 in Mavericks and if you use it and Perian rather than QuickTime X you can still use various AVI files.
Note: Mavericks also now no longer shows previews or thumbnails for AVI files for the same reason.

  • Why does Quicktime only upload 720p to youtube?

I have the new 10.1 Quicktime and use it to trim my 1080p HD .mov files. When I upload them directly to youtube from within quicktime they only play up to 720p in youtube. Is this a limitation of the quicktime player?

Is this a limitation of the quicktime player?
Not a YouTube user, but according to the You Tube side...
Not per se. QT itself supports 1080i/p encoding but the share presets are limited. If you want to use full 1080i/p HD, then manually convert the files using FCP, iMovie, QT 7 Pro, or GaragBand. Once you have created the target file PER THESE YOUTUBE INSTRUCTIONS, you can then manually upload the full HD video using the YouTube site uploader.

  • HT2673 What does a QuickTime Error: -50 mean?

    Hello,
I'm trying to export some videos and keep getting the QuickTime Error: -50 message. It's been a huge was of time as it gets to around 50% and then fails. I can't seem to find any info on this error message. Does anyone know?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

    Hi Russ,
Sorry for the late response, I had to work. I'm working primarily with Mpeg-4 files for the projects in which I'm seeing the error. Do you think that that error message is signifying a spefcic frame? I have a couple of projects that are showing me that error message.
I'll try and figure out your suggestions. I'm new to FCPX so I'm not entirely sure what to do with your instructions.
    Talks soon.

  • What does this quicktime icon mean? Mysterious connection to audio preview in CS3

Can anybody tell me what this quicktime icon means in relation to imported .mov footage?
I'm using AfterEffects CS3, and working to solve an annoying mystery related to audio in RAM previews. I've got a workaround, but would love to get to the root of the matter.
In older projects, audio previews just fine. In recent projects, I can't get audio to work during RAM previews. I can hear scrubbed audio, and audio renders fine from the queue, but can't hear it during RAM previews. I'm working on an animation project.  Audio in RAM preview is crucial, dammit! YES, audio is enabled in the preview control preferences...
If I import an older AE project with working audio - PRESTO! Audio preview works fine again. WHY?
I've narrowed things down - the imported project will do the trick even if it contains noting but this (see icon) certain, earlier QT.mov file - which, ironically, has no audio of it's own.
I suspect the issue may be a Quicktime version or update version quirk. Probably solved if I updated my software to CS5, but can't afford that just now. ARGH.
    Any ideas? Thank you!

Audio is in AIFF format, and was created in the same time period and format as earlier projects, where it previewed just fine.
Photoshop files do not have the Quicktime icon, my workaround solution does.
I can get RAM audio preview working again -  IF I import an additional, older AE project from a time (June 2011) when audio preview was still working as expected. I experimented with those earlier AE projects, deleting various files until I narrowed it down to the following:
As long as the imported project includes a movie file with that goofy quicktime icon, audio RAM preview works. If not, no dice. The movie file in question is a tiny quicktime movie animation generated by AfterEffects (lossless, best settings) in the course of the previous project. It has no audio of its own.
So I have a workaround, but I'm curious. Why doesn't my audio RAM preview work in current projects, and what is it about this little, goofy-icon QT movie file that gets it working again?

  • Does apple TV upscale?

Hi, does anyone know whether Apple TV upscales movies via the HDMI? I'm about to purchase a Pioneer DVD player that upscales standard DVD's for your HD screen. Apparently the dvd image is improved substantially. I was wondering if the Apple TV does the same? I want put all my dvd's onto a hard drive and access them via my Apple TV. I use hand brake and convert them via the preset Apple TV setting. If it does upscale are the particular things i need to change or adjust. For example bit rate etc.
    Thanks for any info

Yes the  tv upscales. It's outputs are 480/576 i/p, 720 p and 1080 i. Whichever output you choose it will always scale to. The highest resolution content it will play is 720.
Upscaling will not improve the quality of any content. Content is always degraded by upscaling. The point is that some upscalers are better than others and therefore degrade less than others, in some cases this can be a significant difference especially if it also means that the source is connected by digital connections.

  • How does this quicktime pro thing work?

i bought final cut hd about a year and a half ago and recently had to reinstall it. When i pulled out the disk , I noticed that not only did the final cut hd come with a serial number, but i had a serial number for quicktime pro, which was on the same package as the final cut. There was no disk for quicktime pro. And i never installed quicktime pro. What did i miss? Was i supposed to go online and download it using that serial number? Is it too late now to get a quicktime pro that works with quicktime 6.5.2?

Quicktime in itself is Quicktime Pro. But, the pro part is locked until you enter the serial number that came with Final Cut. Sorry to say Apple no longer supports Quicktime 6.5.2. Meaning if you don't have Quicktime 6.5.2 or are able to get it from a CD (or someone you know). You will need the buy Quicktime Pro from Apple.
You didn't supply the OS your running. That will determine what Quicktime if you can run Quicktime 6.5.2............

    hello,

is it that apple doesn't want me to save any mp3 files?

  • Does FrontRow works in extended desktop mode on the new Imac ?

I want it on TV when i work on the Imac

Probably not going to work. In order to have front row to play on your tv you have to set the tv as the controlling monitor (menu on the tv). Once you activate front row you can no longer access the menu so any application that requires you to access the menu bar is going to be difficult to use unless you memorize all of the keyboard short cuts.

  • Why does FrontRow reboot my computer?

I have my Mac Mini hooked up to my TV and theater system, and every time I have Front Row running and switch to another input on the TV, it reboots my Mini. Why? Is this normal?

I have solved the problem by uninstalling Version 11 and replacing it with version 9.5.
From my internet research, I have found others having an issue with screen freezing.
Older versions do not do this
    Thank you

  • Why doesn't Frontrow take the same video settings from QuickTime?

    Hi,
I would like to play my video's in Frontrow. But when I do that, they aren't stretched on the entire screen. There are black sidebars. So I changed in Quicktime my settings for fullscreen, so the aspect-ratio from the video is equal to that from the screen. But it won't work in Frontrow. Someone knows the answer to this, because it's pretty important.

Front Row does use QuickTime to play videos, but it doesn't use the QuickTime Player directly. So, the QuickTime Player's preferences are not referenced. When playing DVDs, most DVD Player application preferences are ignored, but some are referenced. For example, if you change the DVD Player to use the digital optical audio of your computer, Front Row will use it the next time you play a DVD. So, it must be possible to get Front Row to look at some of the other preference files. I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback so they know you'd like to have more control over the video playback options in Front Row.

  • Upscaling question. 720p to 1080p

ok guys i never upscale because i normally always shoot at 1080p
but i have to upscale some 720p to 1080 now and whats the best way to do it - what software? im guessing its not a case of just importing 720p footage into a 1080p timeline and scaling it up? what software or plugin or settings in after effects do people use to keep the quality okay on upscaling?
    cheers
    Andy

RedGiant's Instant HD does a good job at upscaling. See http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-instant-hd/
