Does Gmail IMAP in Mail.app take up HD space?

I'm looking to move from Sparrow to Mail.app now that it was sold to Google and won't be adding new features. One great feature with Sparrow is the ability to download message on demand so it doesn't take up precious HD space. Does anyone know if I have Gmail set up on Mail.app if it does the same thing, or is each message and attachment being stored locally and taking up space?

Yes, but are they stored, including the attachment? It's more the attachments I'm worried about.

  • A different sort of problem with GMail IMAP on Mail.app (Tiger)

I setup my GMail account using IMAP under Mail.app (Tiger). At first it worked fine. But now it just hangs when I go to the Inbox. I get the clock or pie or whatever that is next to Inbox. In the Activity Monitor I see...
    [[email protected]] Performing pended
    Copying Message
[INBOX - [email protected]] Opening mailbox...
    Opening mailbox...
I have let these sit for hours (we're talking over 12) and it gets nowhere. I have removed the account, deleted the associated files under ~/Library, recreated and it just comes back. I can use Thunderbird without any problems at all.
Any ideas what might have happened? I did uncheck saving drafts, trash, and junk on server as Google suggests.

Try this to determine the scope of the problem:
    1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts and create a new user account for testing purposes.
    2. Either log out of your main user account or just quit Mail so that it does not interfere with the other user account.
    3. Log in as the newly created user and set up the Gmail IMAP account there.
    4. Check whether the problem also happens when logged in as another user.

Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    /Library/LaunchAgents/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/StartupItems /Library/LaunchDaemons /Library/LaunchAgents /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/LaunchAgents ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Multiple gmail accounts in mail.app via IMAP - how to delete messages

multiple gmail accounts in mail.app via IMAP - how to delete messages so that they are not stored on gmail and not in All Mail therefore either.
i know that dragging messages to the GMail.Trash folder deletes it in Gmail, but doing that for multiple accounts is a hassle!
anybody else struggle with this, solved it?

i have still not figured out a solution to this. very painful - the fact that messages iwill not be using ever again and with large attachments, just sit there in all mails and slow down mail.app for me, fill up search results with stuff i don't want to see and fill up space on the HDD. the attachments as a result often are stored 3-4 times on the HDD!
some geek here must have solved it - come on!

  • Can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

Hello, can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

The solution was to remove all versions of Acrobat Pro and reinstall Acrobat Pro XI. I still had the download file in my Time Machine backup. That's a good thing, since the download link from the order listing on the Adobe website under my account would not work.
The problems don't occur with version 11.0.0. I got the work done, now I'm updating to 11.1.0 and will report if they came back.

  • Send from Gmail alias in Mail.app in iOS 7?

I have a Gmail account with several email accounts that forward into it. I've configured Gmail on the web so that I can send email from those accounts.
I just set up this Gmail account in Mail.app in iOS7 on my iPad.
In Gmail on the web, if I receive an email to one of the accounts that forwards into this Gmail account, and click "reply", it will automatically send use that account as the "from" address (rather than the Gmail account).
Is there any way to specify this as a preference in Mail.app on the iPad? Otherwise I have to remember to manually change the "from" address when I reply to an email sent to any of the accounts that forward to my Gmail account.

I've not heard of or experience any such issue.
Have you tried removing and readding the accounts in question?

  • Why does the messaging app take so much space (5.6??) Also when I try to delete messages, it still shows 5.6. help me!

    Hi,
I have barely any space left on my phone. ios7 messaging app takes so much space. How can I stop this?

Your phone needs more storage, buying storage on iCloud.com doesn't change that.
Delete some of the stuff off of your phone, it's full.

  • GMail IMAP All Mail does not match Apple Mail

I have a GMail account that I also access via Apple Mail setup as IMAP. I've been trying to delete some emails from this GMail account. I first did the delete in Apple Mail (AM) but somehow the deleted emails would show up a few minutes later. So next I did the delete directly on the web based GMail account. After I got done, the emails seemed to have been deleted on my GMail account. At this time I had ~11,000 items in the GMail All Mail folder.
But when I looked at AM, the IMAP Gmail All Mail has over 21,000 items which includes all of the items I had deleted from GMail.
I tried deleting the IMAP account all together and made sure that the GMail IMAP folders in the Library was removed. Then I recreated the IMAP account in AM and within about 30 minutes, all of the 21,000 items including the emails that no longer exists in the web based GMail account came back.
I like the convenience of having access to All Mail in my AM but it seems I don't have control over the contents. Can anyone explain what is going on and how I might be able to actually delete the files within AM?

    cymorrow wrote:
"what I mean is that you have two copies of everything in Apple Mail. everything that's in your gmail inbox in Mail or in any of the other mailboxes is duplicated in the All mail mailbox."
I don't keep them in both places, after I have read the message and have responded, I delete the message from my AM inbox because I know a backup already exists in All Mail.
this is up to you and you can do as you like but this is the long way to do it and you'll be fighting gmail as you are if you keep using it. it's much simpler IMO to keep messages you don't want to delete in your inbox. as it is you do download every message twice even if you delete one copy afterward.
I want to clean out all of the junk mail that gets kept by GMail in All Mail and that is why I am trying to delete these items.
that's just it. there is no easy way to do it. All Mail is the master mailbox for everything you ever received. gmail wants to keep all of them forever and they are hard to get rid of.
I seem to have deleted them from the web GMail but they keep showing back up in the AM All Mail. That must mean GMail is still keeping these "deleted" items somehow/somewhere so that when I create a new IMAP account, AM is downloading them again.
I suspect you haven't emptied trash in webmail gmail.

    Hi BKDubble,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPhone. If you are having an issue with a mismatch in the reported storage space for Mail in iOS on your iPhone, you may want to make sure you have a current backup of your data, then try the following troubleshooting steps (the article is aimed at a slightly different issue, but the steps can also be helpful for storage reporting issues):
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

  • Gmail IMAP on Mail 3 - Need Help

I have set up Gmail IMAP to use with Apple Mail and I am multiple questions -- please help!
    1. Under Mailboxes -- I have Inbox which one would think would have all my email from Gmail. And There is another option termed "Gmail" which has all the IMAP folders. Under the "All Mail" section it shows that I have almost double the messages than what I have on my Inbox. I don't really know why it is separate like this and with the number of emails are different.
    2. As I am composing a message -- the "Mail Activity" window on the bottom list keeps saying sending msg to "whoever I am composing the msg to". This happens about 6-7 times depending on the length of my message. One of my friends ended up getting 6-7 emails from me with one line each. Why does it do that?
    3. It seems that IMAIL is quite slow with the GMAIL IMAP server. Does anyone else notice this?
    4. Is there like a comprehensive guide to GMAIL IMAP on IMAIL that I can read and familiarize myself with all aspects?
    5. Can i get additional mail templates from somewhere?
Thanks to all who help me figure all this out. I am a recent switch from Windows and trying to figure everything out.

  • [Google Mail] / [Gmail] folder in Mail.app

Like others I'm trying to get rid of the [Google Mail] folder that shows in the folder list (you may have [Gmail]).  This is only my tidy fetish rather than some kind of operational issue.
    There's some strangeness involved:
Mail.app sometimes shows a sub folder to [Google Mail] called Starred but this has no mail in it - despite there being starred mail in the account.  Starred mail only shows in the Flagged folder. **
In GMail's settings, I tried turning off the Starred label from showing in IMAP thinking that the [Google Mail] folder was only showing because it had a nested label.  The Starred sub-folder disappeared but the folder [Google Mail] did not.
I have tried two work arounds that I found.
Firstly creating a label [Google Mail] then not showing it in IMAP (this is why I also tried hiding Starred from IMAP in case there was a nesting issue).
The other was setting 'Google Mail' as the IMAP Path Prefix in Mail.app preference.  Whilst that got rid of the folder, it also hid all of my labels - these appear to be at the same level in the IMAP hierachy so setting the path via [Google Mail] hid the other labels from view.
I noted that with a label [Google Mail] visible in IMAP, the corresponding folder icon was grey.  With the label hidden from IMAP or deleted, the icon is clear / white.  Either way though, this doesn't change whether the [Google Mail] label/folder gets shown.
On top of all of this I have a more recently enabled account which does not show the [Google Mail] folder at all.  The label and IMAP seetings are identical across the accounts.  (Interestingly this account does show the Starred label as a folder at the same level as my other labels - but it is also empty with all starred mail for the account showing in Flagged. **)
Thank you for taking the time to read this far.  Does anyone have any other ideas worth trying?
    Andrew
** Just a note if you try hiding the Starred label in IMAP... Flag changes in client apps (Mail.app, Mail on iOS) will sync back to Gmail forcing changes in a mail's Star staus.  BUT changes made in Gmail will not sync back to changes in the flag status in the client.  This means that hiding Starred can quickly mean your flags and stars are out of sync across devices, apps and Gmail.  Probably best not to turn it off.

I actually don't see that in my setup. But if it is really annoying you enough, I'd post it on the Gmail support forums.

  • Phantom GMail messages in mail.app

    Here's my situation:
At one time I decided it would be lovely to point mail.app at my GMail account. I changed my mind about this pretty quickly (once I figured out that it was going to take approximately 11 years to download all of my gmail messages, since I rarely delete anything from gmail).
The "phantom messages" I reference in the subject line are these: references to gmail messages that do not exist on my machine. During the normal course of using mail, I don't ever see them, but they turn up by the thousands when I search for messages or when I create a Smart Mailbox. I'm starting to suspect that they may be implicated in some of the mail slowness that I have been experiencing, in particular slowness of Smart Mailboxes (which, ideally, I would like to use to organize my RSS feeds).
    Here's what it looks like:
The little "Show in mailbox" text that looks like it ought to be a link is nothing - can't click it, can't highlight it, nada.
I have recently rebuilt ALL of my .plist files in an attempt to address the "mail won't quit" problem (the one that's NOT related to notes or mobile me - seems to have worked, by the way), so I know that's not going to solve the problem. When I look at /Library/Mail, there is no evidence of a GMail mailbox anywhere.
So. Does anybody know how I can get rid of these? There are literally tens of thousands of them - one search turns up over 16000 phantom messages. I can delete them, which makes them not show up in searches anymore. Interestingly, when I delete them they do NOT show up in my Trash... they simply vanish. So I could manually delete them all, but that would take a really long time.

Bump... anybody have any ideas on this one?

  • Older post from apple support community delivered on gmail show in Mail App when new notification received

    Hi all,
I am using Mail as a client to my Gmail account.
I am registered with such account to receive notification about new posts from Apple Support Communities on which I took part.
However when I receive a new mail notifications, I get a huge list of post, it basically seems the whole conversation.
Even if the grouping done by Mail App shows 1 message only, I can see lot of posts attached to the mail.
Apparently by deleting the group or the very latest mail, it deletes the whole conversation, but everytime a new mail arrives, the conversation shows again.
By doing a search for sender and subject on notification arrival, only one mail shows from the results.
When deleting the mail, the whole conversation gone from Mail App, did the search again with same criteria, and got 0 result.
Why this behavior ? Am I missing something ?

    *I figured it out!*
Simple fix, here is what you do - open Mail v4.2 > Preferences
Select your Gmail account with this weird problem (I say select, cause in my situation I have multiple Gmail account setup but was having trouble with 1).
    Then goto > Advanced tab
and then just type "/" (forward slash) - and then wait for a minute, it should fix it and allow to receive all the ghosts messages again - which apparently were visible under my online (web based) gmail.com's account also on my iPhone. You might see double messages, don't freak out like I did - Quit Mail v4.2 and restart that should go away as well, like in my case. Strange? Definitely
    Anyways, hope this helps!

  • How to log into gmail with default Mail app

So my gmail has a 2 step verification option to have it more secure, but the default mail app on my iphone 5S does not give me the option to give a second verification so I can't log in.
They continuously say my password is incorrect because of this...
Any way to fix this please?
    Ludwig Dory

After more googline I actually found the solution, I'll post it here in case anyone else has the same problem I had:
You have to go to the double verification setup in browser https://accounts.google.com/b/0/SmsAuthSettings and generate an app specific password, this is the only way it'll work.
