Does having multiple versions of Photoshop installed effect performance in any?

I have a laptop with 8 gigs of RAM, Windows 7, i3 Intel processor, but Photoshop is very slow in responding and often I have to wait three minutes from the time I click the text entry tool until I can type, then each additional step, tool selection, whatever freezes Photoshop for several minutes. This is unacceptable, of course. Other software works normally.
I recently bought a new laptop with an i7 Intel processor, 12 gigs of RAM, and a GeForce graphics processor and the problem is even worse! CS6 locks up so long and so often I usually just load the Task Manager and end the process!
I have lots of fonts but doubt they could cause a problem this severe. Since the new laptop has a high definition screen, I need my font preview size to be at the largest size to see them clearly.
Now, I have 32 and 64 bit versions of CS6, CS5, and Photoshop Elements 10 and 12 installed. I don't use them at the same time, but I'm beginning to wonder whether they might cause some performance problems. (Photoshop installed both versions when I set up this computer in January, both CS5 & CS6. I downloaded CS5 because I was afraid that if CS6 got problematic, I could switch to CS5 and use that instead but the problem is terrible.) If the 64 bit version is giving me too much trouble, I'll switch to the 32 in hopes it will work better. But especially in the new computer, Photoshop never works well.
I bought the new laptop with the extra RAM and heavier duty processor to solve this problem in my old computer, which also has those versions of Photoshop installed. I don't use large files and do light graphic design work for my own use. The most resources intense thing I do is use smart object product mockups I buy online. I'm afraid the problem might be too many fonts but I don't want to get rid of any of them. I've too much invested in them.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I did transfer all my fonts from the Windows 7 computer to the new Windows 8 laptop. I use different external HDs on the computers but I do occasionally connect any of them to the other computer to transfer large sets of files.
No, Photoshop is on Drive C, the main internal drive on each.
Last night I turned off font file previews in the font menu. I got much better performance. Photoshop worked much better, other than when I made a block of text and wanted to click on it and move it. It froze up for about thirty seconds before letting me do that.
If this is a font management problem, should I get font management software? I don't know anything about such software. Do they allow you to load only the fonts you want to use, on the fly? I see one, Fusion 6, which has a CS6 plug-in, leading me to think I might be able to preview and use fonts without the drain on Photoshop's performance.
Do you have any opinions or advice in that regard?

Do you mean Process Multiple Files? The trial version is exactly the same as the regular version, only it stops working after 30 days.

According to Wikipedia, 4 years ago you would most likely have bought Photoshop CS5.
You can download Photoshop CS5 from Adobe.  Start here:
    Download CS5 products
You'll need your serial number to activate it.  If you don't have that, you can likely find it on Adobe's main web site after you've logged-in with your Adobe ID.  See the Find your serial number quickly link to pursue that.

  • HT1349 I have multiple versions of Outlook installed, and the icloud calendar won't work, how do I correct this?

I have multiple versions of Outlook installed and icloud won't work, how do I correct this?

We mananged to resolve this exact issue on a machine recently that was running MS Office Home and Business 2010. However a copy of MS Office 2000 was also installed (for legacy reasons re Access 2000) and it was this causing the issue. We used Programs & Features to 'Change' the Office 2000 installation to 'Add/Remove' features and de-selected Outlook in here. This prompted a reboot and the issue was subsequently fixed.
Please note this did not remove the Outlook 2010 that was installed (and in use), but be careful to have a backup of your Outlook as your mileage may vary.

  • Why does Windows shows multiple versions of Firefox installed?

I am running Firefox 11.0 on Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. Firefox seems to be working fine.
When I check the list of installed programs in the Windows control panel I see two versions of Firefox listed (11.0 and 10.0.2). Is this normal? Does the installer not remove older versions when it does an update? Is is safe for me to uninstall the older version?
By the way, same situation for Thunderbird. It shows both 10.0.2 and 9.0.1!

It sometimes happens that the updater doesn't remove the old entry in the installed programs section and thus shows multiple versions as installed. You usually only have the most recent version installed and will remove that version if you try to uninstall the older version because both point to the same installation folder. You can either remove that registry key yourself or use a registry cleaner.

  • Multiple versions of Photoshop ok? Conflicts? Hard drive space?

CS4 and CS5 Extended are currently installed on my computer, along with extensive number of third party plug-ins. I'm already encountering problems opening CS5 Extended--takes 2-3 tries before it actually opens; get "not responding" message first couple of times and have to force quit. Am concerned that purchase and installation of CS6 Extended will further complicate matters. Should I uninstall them before installing CS6 Extended? I currently have multiple Photoshop CS4 and 5 folders, etc in my Applications folder. Am thinking a clean-up is in order but thought I'd get advice before proceeding with CS6 purchase and attempt at clean-up. Also, if applicable, I have multiple Lightroom folders as well (2, 3, and 4) and am now having issues jumping over to Photoshop for additional editing from there. Thx

Yes, multiple versions mess with file associations. That's all it comes down to and pretty much the source of your troubles. Other than that there is no reason why one couldn't have multiple versions running, but feel free to consolidate and remove older versions....

  • Operating with multiple versions of Photoshop

I have Photoshop CS4, CS 5.1 and have recently upgraded to Photoshop CS6.  I also own Elements 12.  I would like to uninstall previous versions of Photoshop (they are all currently still installed) but I am uncertain if the uninstall might remove a module inadvertantly or create an operational problem. Can I uninstall them without affecting my operation in order to clean up my machine?  I am on Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks.

The only thing you need to worry about if the file associations. Uninstalling any Adobe app, is known to set the file extention to none, instead of checking for a newer version and if found leaving it alone. You can either manually fix the associations or reinstall photoshop and let it do it for you.
As for features of photoshop like swatches, brushes, plugins, etc. these are stored in the respective folder of that version, so they will not be affected. The exception is if you manually accessed swatches for example in a previous versions folder. If you have been doing that, then its time to move those files as they more than likely will be removed. To recap, removal will only remove files that are in the previous version of photoshop only. Any files that are stored in the latest version on your system , or a folder that is outside of the previous version such as your pictures folder or documents folder, will be left untouched.
I hope this helps and has not caused any confusion.

  • Does the latest version of Photoshop have Adobe Camera Raw built in?

How can I get the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw installed in the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop?  And, is 7.1 the latest update for Adobe Camera Raw?
Thanks for any help with this!

Thanks for the help Jeff.  I just switched to PS CC, just wasn't sure what to do about RAW.  I love it for the non-destructive qualities and was lost without it! I will check out the ACR 8.3 RC.  I'm sure that will solve everything. Thanks for the help...it is appreciated!

  • Does single-app version of Photoshop include Lightroom?

Hi!  Looking into getting the single app version of Photoshop in Creative Cloud, but don't know if it includes access to Lightroom or not...  It doesn't say so anywhere, but Lightroom isn't an option under single app so I was curious...  Thanks!

Studio_E, Lightroom is not a part of Photoshop subscription, instead Photoshop and Lightroom are two separate applications. You can get Photoshop CS6 single product subscription but not for Lightroom. You can get it for Lightroom as a part of Creative Cloud.

  • Does an OEM version of Photoshop CS3 bought from a reseller qualify to get the upgrade version of Lightroom 5?

I wish to purchase Lightroom 5 at a discounted price and the upgrade version is attractive. I have an OEM version of Photoshop CS3 which I bought online downloaded from a reseller.  Is this OEM version accepted as eligible for the upgrade version?

As an alternative to the OEM route, the Lightroom+Photoshop bundle deal at $10 per month is hard to beat assuming you are not opposed to software as a subscription.

  • Does having multiple GPUs installed let motion render faster than just one?

if you have 2(or more) GPU's installed and hooked up to monitors, does motion split the work, i.e. render twice as fast? or does it just pick one and use it?
I have 2 cards, but only one monitor, and motion renders using whichever card has a monitor attached. so i wonder if i picked up another monitor and run it from the other card would that speed up my rendering process?
    thanks

    Heya,
Motion renders (IIRC) on your system's primary GPU, which is the monitor that has the titlebar menus (File, Edit, etc). Adding additional GPUs does not speed things up.

  • Multiple Versions of Excel installed and using BPC

Is it possible to have Excel 2003 and 2007 installed on a users desktop and have BPC work properly?  We have some users that want to retain 2003 on their computers but are experiencing issues.

I know from working with our consultant that it isn't recommended but this group has some software that requires it to have 2003 available for at least a while longer.
The specific issue that prompted my question:
User has the Log on/ Log off button when in Excel 2003 but does not have it available in 2007.  She wants to create templates using 2007 but cannot access it.
This is a new group of users for us and they are the only group that wants to maintain both versions.  Since we are seeing this issue and we know it isn't recommended, I am trying to get in front of the issue to identify what other problems may arise and if there is a way around it?
    Thanks,
