Does iCal's speed slow as file grows?

I'm concerned that iCal is going to slow down as the program gets loaded up with events and to do lists.
Is anybody using iCal for a small business making 20 to 30 entries per day and seeing a slowdown in the program's speed?
We sync. iCal with three computers and we need the program remain fast to use and sync. for our staff.
Is this free iCal program adequate for a small business or should I be looking at a program like Now Up to Date & Contact for my needs?
I spoke to support at BusySync (busymac.com) as an alternative to .Mac sync. for iCal and they said the had no reports of iCal slowing down as the file gets larger.
Any comments are appreciated.

It's worse than that, iCal doesn't seem to slow as files grow, it seems to slow randomly and no one on this forum has the faintest idea why. Search "slow" and look back. There are hundreds of entrys from people who've experienced iCal slowing to a snail's pace and no one has a solution. I made the mistake of moving my business (maybe 1 or 2 entries a day) to iCal and now I'm stuck waiting 10 seconds everytime I want to make the smallest change. AM to PM - 10 seconds, one calendar to another - 10 seconds. It takes even longer to duplicate an entry or copy an entry. I tried to change fourteen entries to a different calendar today and had to sit through seven minutes of the spinning beachball waiting for that simple change. It doesn't sync reliably with the four other Macs I own and I'm also convinced it's crashing iTunes on me everytime I try to sync Contacts and Calendars. I've been a Mac devotee since 1987 and I swear this is the worst single program Apple has ever written. In System 9 I was able to write a better calendar program in Hypercard. It's not worth the time it takes to install. I'd think twice before I used it for anything important!
I wish someone would at least acknowledge the problem!!!!

  • New to MacBook - slow LAN file transfer problem

My new MacBook is painfully slow when wifi-ing to my house LAN.
I turned in my old G4 iBook for a MacBook (2GHz C2D, 2GB, 10.4.9, all updates). I have a LAN that consists of a wired 1G Ethernet backbone (a Mini and a Powermac G5 are wired in) and a Snow AEB that provides 802.11g wifi access to the LAN. The wired LAN connects to a D-Link GB Ethernet switch so the wired systems can exchange files fast. The switch connects to a D-Link EBR2310 router that connects to a cable modem to ComCast. The router has the latest firmware (1.05, it's an 'A' version router).
The Mini, G5, and MB are static IPs on the LAN. The D-Link router passes out DHCP addresses >100, with addresses <101 reserved for static LAN IPs. I use static IPs for network reliability when recovering from power outages and other unforeseen glitches. The LAN has worked very well in this configuration, with fast file transfers among machines and good stability.
With my old 802.11g G4 iBook, I was able to watch DVDs that are stored on an external FW drive connected to the Mini. No stalls, no pauses, no dropouts - MenuMeters showed an average throughput of about 700KBytes/sec on the iBook when viewing a DVD. I used both VLC and DVD Player with good results.
With my new MacBook, I can't view my DVD files. 802.11g network transfer rates to the MB (indicated by MenuMeters and by Activity Monitor) vary rapidly from a high of about 1.1 MBytes/sec to 20 KBytes/sec. Movies stall, skip, etc.
Simple file copies from one system to another are also much slower with the MacBook - an average of ~100KBytes/sec vs. ~ 1.5 MBytes/sec with my old iBook. In short, the MacBook is dog-slow in file transfers from the other machines compared with my old iBook when using the wifi connection, with no change to the network infrastructure in going from the old laptop to the new. I would like to fix this.
My AEB is set up in bridge mode (simple access point) with WPA2 security. All three Macs are completely current with latest updates, as is the Snow AEB. The MB has 4 bars of signal strength. Slow file transfer problem does not change when moving the MB to or from the AEB.
Curiously, when I download a large file (like the Intel 10.4.9 combo update), the MB shows a steady ~800KBytes/sec download speed, with none of the speed variation it shows with file transfers from either the Mini or the G5. File transfers to/from the MB to either of the other Macs are very slow.
Both the Mini and the G5 have Airport cards: when I switch them from wired Ethernet LAN to wifi LAN, they transfer files between each other at ~ 2MBytes/sec - about what you'd expect from an 802.11g protocol. So the slow file transfer doesn't seem to be due to the AEB, it seems to be specific to the MacBook. When I connect the MB using its hardware Ethernet port, files transfer just as fast as the other systems.
I have tried these measures, without effect on the problem:
    - power off/restart of every component in the system;
    - changing the AEB to an open network mode;
    - changing the MB from static IP to DHCP;
    - toggling IPv6 on/off;
    - running no applications other than Finder on all systems;
Activity Monitor on the MB doesn't show anything sucking up CPU cycles during file transfers. I have plenty of RAM. The only thing I've changed in the network is the swap of the iBook for the MacBook.
Can anyone suggest what else I can try to make acquisition of this nice shiny MacBook a step forward, rather than a step back? Thank you!

    Hi,
Did you want to use the Live Migrations for that?
We recommend that you configure separate dedicated networks with gigabit or faster speed for live migration traffic and cluster communication, and these networks should be separate from the network used by the management operating system, and from the network
    used by the virtual machines.

  • Slow opening files

    Hi,
I recently a user's PC. They went to a Windows 7 64bit 12GB RAM, 1 x SSD drive and 1 x SATA. They have been upgraded from Photoshop 7 to PhotoShop CS5. The user is complained that opening files from the network is slower than it was with PS7. I did a comaprision and there is a difference in the speed with which files apepar in the Window in CS5. I have now had to put a version of PhotoShop 7 back on her PC to appease her but her point is correct. PS7 displays files quicker than CS5. Is there anything that can improve the speed with which files are displayed?
I have had a read and applied as many of the settings as are relevant from this article on optimizing performance but it hasn't changed things.
    Thanks,
    Dermot.

I have done some more research.
The original complaint was that CS5 was comapred to PS7.1. That comparison however was between two different machines. I checked and the slow machine (the new one with the spec in the original post) was using a 100mb network connection whereas the other was on 1GB. I re-patched the slow machine so it was operating at 1gb also. I thought that was the end of it but no!
I had already installed PS7.1 on the slow machine so I did a comparision. I took 10 jpeg whose disk size was between 200kb and 800kb (about 2mb un-compressed). I opened them in CS5 and they took between 8-9 seconds from draging into CS5 to fully rendered. I then did the same on the installed version of PS7. It too 2-3 seconds. These files were from a network share. There may be some improvement with PS7 due to disk caching somewhere.
The graphics card is an Nvidia Quardo 600 1GB DDR3. There is no direct option to disable OpenGL. In the Display options/Nvidia Control Panel you can control global and specific program graphics options. You can modify graphics options for PhotoShop CS (which incidently is called CS4). The options where Quardo or Global. I have set it to Quadro for now I am not sure that the graphics card is the issue but I'm happy to change any settings if they will have a bearing.
Does anyone have any other suggestions I can try?
    Thanks,
    Dp.

Why is does my apple run SLOW.you go to open a program and the circle thing just spins for a delayed period of time.  You change from typing in a word doc and go to say email or internet and it takes several minutes to allow you open anything up.  Like it is frozen.  I have tried rebooting the computer and it works for a few minutes then gets stuck.

Which model iMac do you have?
How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?
Check out the following & do the necessary:
User Tip:  Why is my computer slow?
What to do when your computer is too slow
    Speeding up your Mac
    OS X (10.6.6)
Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • How to increase the speed of network file transfer

    hi ,
In my application i want to use the file from one system to another system.
i am using stream reader to get the file over the network , its working fine for small file,
but i want to access file size exceed 10 MB then i faced the problem. Its get very slow the file transfer over the network.
so i am try to use java NIO for transfer file,
Using NIO , While i am make server and client both are same system then the file tranfer is 10MB file in 10 seconds , but i am making server and client are different machine then its take so long to transfer file ie (10 MB file in 3 minutes).
I want to reduce the time . If any chance to reduced the file transfer time then please suggest me.

Data transfer rate for a single client is unlikely to be effected by using NIO or old blocking IO. The important factor is the maximum transfer rate you can get between the sender and receiver.
You should be able to get 0.5-1.0 MB per second for each 10 Mbit per second of available bandwidth. Your timings suggest you are getting about a 10-20 Mbit/s link speed.

  • Why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??

why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??
for example, when i am attempting to make a 'all-day' appointment on october 2nd 2011, it automatically shifts it to october 1st.
but if i am doing a timed appointment for only a few hours, it will allow me to put it on that day.
i am trying to put in travel dates so any help on how to fix this, would be greatly appreciated.

    alsdman,
Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."

  • ICal is too slow for practical use and crashes after it is opened

I am using an iMac G4 with OSX10.4.8. iCal is so slow that it has become impractical to use. Every click takes at least a minute to complete. Moving from the daily to the monthly view takes at least 3 minutes. I have discarded the plist file from the user library and it did not help. Any idea what is going on? Safari also suffers from the same slowness problem. I no longer use it. Have switched to Firefox.

I was having the same problem and it started after I upgraded to Tiger. After trying all the solutions, I discovered the problem with my iCal, which might not be the same for yours.
I was trying to sync with Entourage. I only had about 5 appointments on there, but once I deleted that calendar and unchecked the Sync to .Mac under preferences.
Now it runs SUPER fast. So it may be a problem with one of the calendars that you've created.
    Good luck.
    Thanks!

  • ICal 2.0.2 (1038) file locations questions

my iCal (v2.0.2 (1038)) seems whacked...
are iCal's calendars in ~/Library/Calendars? and do they end in .ics? mine is empty! read on...
also, i have a folder called 'iCal' in ~/Library/| Application Support/ that has a folder in it called 'Sources' and among the files in it there are some called ...a bunch of letters&numbers.calendar. i believe those are my three calendars!
I have come to conclusion this is why my iCal is so slow opening! and other problems.
this must have occurred during some some upgrade maybe?
how can i remedy this? i'd hate to lose all my calendars histories.
I tried creating a new calendar and it created a new '4D56BA09.calendar' file in ~/Library/| Application Support/iCal/Sources/. nothing in ~/Library/Calendars.

    Hi Ted,
any ideas on how to test my WEBDAV?
Good question. Read http://www.shawnwall.com/teach/webdav-ical.php (the instructions I used to install WEBDAV in Tiger).

  • Does the iPad get slower with time?

i have an iPad 4 for over a year. Does the iPad get slower with the passage of time or because of small amount of available?

As with any piece of electronics, the more stuff you get on there, the more clutter and the more 'junk' (not meaning offensively, just junk as extra files, fragmented files, etc) that it has to run through.
If you think it's getting too slow, you can fully back it up, then reset your iPad back to factory settings (erase all content and settings) and then restore from that backup.
It's not impossible, just something to do carefully because if you haven't backed everything up correctly, you will lose it. (content and apps from iTunes can always be redownloaded but content made on your iPad can be deleted if not backed up)
I've had my iPad 2 for almost three years now and really haven't noticed a major decline in function. So unless you see something drastic, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Could be systems logs or some other system file growing.
Use OmniDiskSweeper or DaisyDisk to map what's being used.

  • How does hard drive speed impact iMovie performance

I'm thinking of getting one of the newly released 15" MacBook pro laptops. For hard drive choices I can get 750GB @ 5400 RPM or 500GB @ 7200 RPM (SSD Drives are too expensive for me). How does hard drive speed impact iMovie performance?

Most of my videos are .mov. Currently I'm using a ContourGPS and it saves the files as .mov H264 and iMovie converts it. It think it's uncompressing the file using Apple Intermediate codec, the extension is still .mov after the iMovie conversion.

  • Does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

31 apps is nothing. I have 130 apps XD. Then again, I'm using an iPhone 4S which has more RAM compared to the 3GS. RAM is everything when it comes to speed. To use the app switcher, press the home button twice quickly and a list of your recently opened apps will appear. Then hold down on any app and all the apps will go to wiggle mode (like they do when you're deleting apps. Now, simply tap on the red icon that appears at the top left corner of any app you don't want running in the background. This will free up RAM and should make your phone faster.

  • HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
    Which is best ?

    DrewPowell wrote:

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.

  • When i open an mp3 file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

when I open a music file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place.  The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file.  You can delete the original if you wish.
