Does iMovie take advantage of quad core processing?

Subject line says it all. I just ordered a new quad-core iMac and I'm hoping I'll see a speed bump in Final Cut Express and iMovie, and not just Final Cut Studio...
Anyone know for sure?

actual version of iLife is single-core only.

  • Can InDesign take advantage of quad core processors?

I've been having trouble importing a large excel table in InDesign CS3 on windows 7,  and found that indesign was only using 1 of the 4 cores of my processor, maxing it out and crashing because of it.  So my question is, is there a way to make CS3 use all 4 cores, or failing this, does InDesign CS6 use quad cores?
Thanks for any help on this.

I installed InDesign CS6 trial, but this problem still persists.  I import the file (about a 14000 line excel table, with formatting (this is required for what I'm doing)), but it only uses 1 core of the processor. Only 25% of what it could be using to do this.  Photoshop cs3,4,5,6 use all quad cores and flys!
Anyone know how I can get this to work please?  I'll try anything that might help.
ps I can't import without formating as I need some items to be styled so I can do a find and replace on them, to add indexing elements later.

  • Does LR take advantage of multi-core processors?

    Nick

    Eric,
Conventional wisdom says you would see some improvement. My experience says that you would get more performance from a faster processor if it was a Core 2 Duo 6600 or better. Then the extra RAM would come into its own. There are lots of things you can do to improve where you are and they should carry over into a new computer. Like:
1 Compact the LR database using this tool. Don't forget to backup
    first.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlitebrowser/
    2. Get more RAM, about 2 GB should do.
    3. Get a second HD if you only have one.
    4. Put a second pagefile on the second HD, leaving one on the C:
    drive.
    5. Set all of the pagefiles to 1.5xRAM size. Both MIN and MAX values.
    6. Optimize for apps not system cache.
    7. Make sure any antivirus does not scan the LR files when they
are accessed or when starting up.
    8. If you don't process large volumes of photos frequently, turn
off the Render 1.1 previews at Import.
    9. Make sure you are running XP SR2. [sort of a given]
    10. Get the pagefile defrag s/w from MS here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/PageDefrag.mspx
No guarantees though. These helped me. I have a Core 2 Duo 6600 with 2GB Ram.

  • Can iMovie take advantage of a 12 Core Mac?

We are planning on purchasing some Mac Pros before they are discontinued later this year.
We mainly use iMovie 06 but occasionally iMovie 11.
I have read on other Apple forms that most software cannot take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know with any degree of certainty if iMovie 06 can take advantage of this additional processing power.
We are trying to decide between 6 core or 12 core Mac Pros.

    I doubt it
You are probably right.  Apparently there is NO WAY to know for sure.
Thank you for sending the link.  I read the following, which I completely agree with.
"iMovie HD 6 is still the preferred version for working with the DV over Firewire codec. Newer versions of iMovie lose resolution in rendering this older codec. It also makes the best looking Standard Definition DVD's."

  • Can FCE take advantage of 4 cores?

I was wondering if Fce can take advantage of the 4 cores that the mac pro offers. If not, can it at least use 2? If so, can you use the remaining cores to do other tasks without affecting FCE? (Garageband, ect). Any advice would be appriciated. Would one reccomend using a mac pro for heavy FCE and livetpe rendering work as well as heavy idvd work (also, can idvd use multiple cores for proccessing data)?

IMHO if your processing needs drive you to Final Cut on a Quad Core MacPro, you should be looking at Final Cut Studio, not Final Cut Express.
That said, OSX including Tiger has always provided full symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support and also handles assignment & management of multithreaded tasks to the processors. In the majority of applications users do not have the option of assigning specific tasks to specific processors.
You can look at Apple's performance comparisons for FCP and quite a few other apps on quad MacPros vs. quad G5's. But don't get carried away by the numbers, remember that these comparisons were done in laboratory conditions. For what it's worth, an advertised 30% or even 50% increase in processing power doesn't impress me, between those being optimized comparisons and the reality that all sorts of factors (memory, for one) can eliminate the advantages of more or faster processors.
I'd suggest you look at it this way - a quad core machine gives you much more computing power than a dual or single core machine; and that aggregate computing power is available to all the applications you run on it.

  • Labview 2011 executable does not run on AMD Quad Core

I have recently bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite with AMD Quad Core- A8-4500M 1.9GHz processor and Windows 7 OS. It does not run any labview executables. It runs on all my Intel machines without any problem. This is the first AMD ever bought (and the last). I need help in resolving this problem.
When I run an exe on the AMD, under Task Manager\Processes, I do see *.exe process running, but the Memory usage goes up and tops off at 100% and then it returns to 0. It's like a saw tooth waveform of memory usage, as if it's looking for some missing files. I have cleaned up the computer twice now and even a simple Add Two Numbers.exe does not work on this AMD.
    Any clue, anyone? please?

I believe you are running into the problem described in this KB.

  • Why does iMovie take so long to import a 300MB video?

    Hello.
Basically I have a video file converted via Handbrake so that it would be imported into iMovie. After the conversion, I dragged the MP4 video file into the event. I got a pop-up saying that it would take three to six hours. The resolution of the clip was at 1280X720, at 300MB, it was 15 minutes long. My Mac is rather high specd with a 2.5 Ghz Quad core i7, 4GB ram, 750GB HDD etc. So it shouldn't take that long to import. Can anyone suggest why this is happening? Three to six hours is unacceptable even when they showed how smooth it was on the Keynote for this.

  • Does Premiere take advantage of two GPUs?

I have two GTX770 4GB each that I bought to render with Octane. I was wondering, does Premiere or After Effects take advantage of the dual GPUs, or does it access only one? And if it does, do they have to be in SLI configuration? Octane is not compatible with SLI, so I don't even have the SLI connector in place, but I can put it if it's necessary.
    Thanks

I'm not sure what happens if they're not the same.  I think one of the guys in the Hardware section actually did test it.  Perhaps it was Bill.  But I don't remember the results.  I just remember that multiple identical GPUs were tested and Pr/AME scaled accordingly.
All of us with new Mac Pros are also taking advantage of dual GPUs (with OpenCL) as we have no choice in the matter.

  • Does Labview take advantage of graphics accelerators?

We have an application which is updating LOTS of indicators, boolean and numeric, several times a second while handling a lot of serial communication and data parsing.  We have already seen that on a relatively high spec laptop, it is causing very high load and overheating of the laptop at times.  Yes, there are lots of optimizations yet to take advantage of, and have a developer working on it now, but in general, if one has front panels w/ lots of displayed data that is refreshed a lot, or lots of graphs, would a graphics accelerator card take load off the processor, allowing the application to run more efficiently?

This depends on the chipset and BIOS.
The notebook supports the Mobile Intel(R) PM45 Express Chipset.
    Check this Intel page:

Here you can see that only *Intel Core2 Duo* processor is supported

  • How long does it take for a store to process an online order for store pick up

    Hello,
I placed an order for a Macbook Pro on November 11, 2014. Scheduled an in store pick up where Best Buy estimated pick up date is November 14. I didn't receive the email or text to pick up the item, so I decided to call 1-800-best-buy to see if I can get the new estimated pick up date. I was told by the representative the laptop is actually already at the store, and waiting for me to pick it up. I called the store to make sure, and was told that I can pick it tomorrow morning. I called in today was placed on hold for around 15 minutes. Decided to call 1-800-best-buy again, and found out that it will take another 3-5 days before I get my laptop. I asked the representative to change the pick to another store that has the laptop available right now. It was change since around 10 am in the morning. I called the store to make sure that they got my order, the Manager told me that once the truck deliver more laptop. I will be able to get mine, and I should call in the afternoon to check on the availablity. I called around 5 pm to check, and was told that even if there is a laptop. I would still need to wait until best buy process my order. Called 1-800-best-buy again, and was told that Apple usually take 3-4 for hours to verify the information. Right now, my order status is still "Preparing Order".
My Questions: How long will it take for Best Buy to finish Preparing Order?
Why does it show on the website that if I order by 8 PM I wil be able to pick up the laptop today. Meanwhile, the store pick up was transfered since 10 am this morning, and at 10 PM tonight still nothing.
If I cancel my order, will I get all of my reward zone certificates back?

    Hello sourlime,
Welcome to the forum. I'm not a big online shopper, but when I do order something, I expect it to be an easy, painless transaction. It sounds like you had some troubles with your order not being available on the estimated pick up date, and I sincerely apologize for any frustration you encountered.
Using the e-mail you registered on the forum, I was able to locate your order, and was glad to see you were finally able to pick it up. I do appreciate you taking the time to visit the forum, and I assure you I will be documenting your comments for review. If there is anything else you need assistance with, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Once again, I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and thank you for posting here on the forum.

  • Does Verizon take advantage of Seniors?

This is the second time I have attempted to contact you and your store with no response. Te time to refund and cancel the phone is running out without a response from Verizon. What must I do, go to social media or file a small claims case.
On 2/5/15 I was at your store in N. Canton (330 966 5423.  I was there to have my iPhone transferred to my friend Marie, a 78 year old not able to afford an I phone and not well informed about cell phones. We had to wait over an hour and a half for service. We we finally approached about 7:15 pm. There was only one salesperson in the store.
The phone was transferred but the associate could not fully transfer contacts to the iPhone and the store was closing and other customers were waiting. Marie was told to come back tomorrow to finish the information transfer. She went back the next day and the manager told her to take another phone because hers would not iMessage and he would give her a new iPhone for hers. What he actually did is have he sell the iPhone 4s for $10.00; (I was offered $150 for the phone by Verison when I bought my iPhone 6); sign her up for another 2 years  take her phone and tell he it is an I phone.
On Saturday 2/14/15 she went to the store to get i messaging working an was told then that this is not an iPhone and will not iMessage. This is the first time she was made aware that she was not given an iPhone. I then told her to go back and get the iPhone back, they had lied to her about the plan the android, and basically stole the 4s iphone.
She went back to the store to cancel the phone and the contract on
2/15/2015 and was told she could not get back the I phone but they would program her old phone and cancel her current contract for $30.00. I called the manager the next day and told him that I thought what he did was not legitimate, taking advantage of by lying to an unsuspecting elderly woman. and telling her the phone did not work and saint the new phone was free. It is not free! He said he would find a new I phone or return my 4s to her and switch it back to her original contract. This was at 10:30 am, he said he would call me back within a couple of hours with the solution. He never called. At 3pm I called back and asked to spell to him and was told he was gone for the day. I do not believe that he acted in Mrs. Jones best interest or in the best interest of Verison. I do believe that professional customer serves is the best road to success for any company. If employees are only seeking the highest comission on every sale, while taking advantage of a customers ignorance then eventually Version' s  business will suffer. I would be happy to discuss this in more detail by phone or email as Marie does not fully understand what was done to her.
I gave her my iPhone because it is the easiest phone for her to use and most of her friends and family have iPhones so her friends and family can better explain to her how it works and how to best use it.
I ask you this simple question. Would you want your mother treated in this way by your company or any other. As a subscriber myself and business owner I hope not.
Please help Marie and do what you can to prevent this from happening
    to other unsuspecting innocent victims.
Sincerely;  a ****** off consumer and friend of our seniors
