Does input level matter when it's a software/MIDI track?

A real stupid question: When I'm recording a "software instrument" track (i.e. MIDI from my digital piano), does the input level matter? I.e. it's not an audio track so not important to get the level up to just below peaking? Or, should I still do this?
Thanks.

It doesn't matter, and you should still do it.

  • Does the cache matter when choosing hard drive for mac pro?

    Hi,
I have been looking at all the specs to see about adding another hard drive to my mac pro. It is the 1st generation 2006 duel. I am getting a bit confused about the specs required! I don't understand cache? I think that mine is 8 cache, but a lot of the drives I am looking at are 16 or more. Is this important, have I got to stick to 8? Also does it matter about which Sata? i.e. 1, 11 or 111? and what does 'low profile' mean? Fitting it seems really easy, but buying the wrong drive seems easy as well!
    Thanks for any help,
    Adrian.

Desktop drives are nominal 3.5" form factors, about one inch tall. They use a 12 Volt motor to spin the heavy platters around fairly fast.
Notebook rotating drives are mostly 2.5" form factor, now mostly around 9.5mm tall, possibly less. They have only 5 Volts available to spin the motor.
SATA 1, 2, 3 -- 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 is all specsmanship -- rotating drives cannot source data off the spinning platters faster than  a burst of about 150 Mbytes/sec (1.2 Mbits/sec). So that part does not matter except that the 1.5 drives will be older models. Do note pay extra for better SATA speeds.
Rotation speed is very important, because that determines how fast the bits can fly past the read head. 5400 RPM is slower than 7200 RPM. A few 10,000 RPM drives are available, but they are too pricey for most users. I use 10,000 RPM drives in my Server. For Desktop computers, DO pay extra for 7200 over 5400. For notebook computers, a few 7200 RPM drives are available, but they sometimes run HOT.
Green drives, on the other hand, take great liberties with spin rates and sleeping, and are not suitable for production (great for Backups, but then they are not candidates for spares for your main drives). For these reasons, I do not own any Green Drives.
Large-enough cache size means the drive can read an entire track in one revolution, so that if you next ask for blocks near the original block you will not wait the average 4.166 milliseconds for the platter to spin halfway around to pick up new data (it is waiting, pre-fetched in the cache). So do not pay extra above about 8Mbytes, but use larger cache size as a tie breaker between equivalent models.

  • Does voltage output matter when using an adapter with the macbook???????

it is 18.5 volts output 85watts
will it work ok on macbook???

i know that info im trying to find out if using an 18.5 volt universal adapter with a magsafe plug thats 85 watts will it work on a macbook
will the 18.5 volt be too much.....and the 85 watts be ok
note: this is not an apple adapter its a generic one with a magsage plug on it
please dont tell me what is recommended tell me if it will work or not

  • Does any one know of a property rental software to track rents and expenses for multiple properties that works on the IMAC?  Quicken Rental Property is only supported for Windows.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Has any one found a comparable software for IMAC that could replace the Quicken for Rental Properties that is only supported for windows?

  • Input level for narration

    hello,
I don't seem to have any input level lights when adding narration. The lights show up for audio and soundtracks but not for narration. How can I fix this please??

Hello again - thanks for being so patient!
My asio settings are Output   X(box crossed) Realtek High Definition Audio
2048 0 2 16 NO (All highlighted in black)                      Input
    X(box crossed) Realtek etc.                            2048 0 2 16 YES ( Not
    highlighted in black)
    Should that NO be YES?
In the narration box, Realtek comes up also when I click on microphone.
I have switched from a usb microphone to a standard one that plugs into the
front of my computer, and I can hear the sound fron my project clips and the
lvel lights are working now, BUT now when I try to add the narration, the
microphone does not seem to be working and there is no sound in the
narration clip??? The narration works fine without a microphone i.e. when i
just speak straight into the computer speakers.
    Thankyou

  • Level change when adding audio keyframes

    Hi all,
I've been in Avid Land for the last few months and just came back and noticed something that was getting on my nerves when I left (I don't recall seeing this before FCP 6). When I add keyframes to my audio levels with the pen tool, I get a keyframe, but at the same time, it lowers my level as if I had added a keyframe and then dragged it down. As far as I can tell it does this every time.
Does anyone know what this is about?
    Thanks,
    Matt

I was having this problem, so just before I composed this reply I did some tests. It could well be 'sloppy mouse work' but I don't think so. This time the audio level went up by 1 db but before it was dropping by 1 db when adding a keyframe. During the test, no matter how accurate I was the audio level changed when adding a keyframe. The track I was working on was enlarge somewhat and the problem didn't happen on standard sized tracks. I feel that this has to be some sort of bug.
I have always found FCP a little bit on the 'accurate' side. You have to be very precise when clicking on items otherwise you will miss. Some buttons are way too small and I think Apple could improve the FCP workflow by enlarging some buttons and allowing more space around clickable items.
A good example of this is the 3 way colour corrector. The left and right buttons for blacks/mids/whites are very hard to hit and I quite often hit the maximum by mistake.
I have worked on many non-linear systems and FCP is the only one where mouse accuracy is so important.
I am, to some extent used to this now and I suppose it is a minor inconvenience in comparison to the benefits of using FCP but, in the interests of improvement and ease of use it would be good if Apple could take this onboard.
    Weenie.

  • Why are all the volume sliders resetting to zero when I enable recording on my tracks?

That's basically all there is to it. I have 8 drum tracks all set at different input levels but when I record-enable the tracks all the volume sliders rest to zero in the mixer. This has never happened before!

I'm having so much trouble with the audio levels in logic pro. It seems every VST has a completely different level when the volume on the vst is set to 100. Miroslav Philharmonik is EXTREMELY quiet..., and when I load drums into ultrabeat, they immediately peak like crazy.
It's one of a the reasons mixers have volume controls.
Seriously - an orchestral instrument is likely to have hundreds of parts all playing at once. If each part was designed to hit close to 0dB, then it would be impossible to do anything as the resultant mix would be massively loud - you'd have to turn everything down all the time.
Drums are probably going to be peaking fairly loud in a mix, as they do contain a lot of the energy.
There is no standard. A mono synth will often have hotter levels than a polysynth part, as the polysynth could be playing 8-32 voices all at once. Also, different patches, and different instruments themselves will be programmed to have different volume levels.
This is all true regardless of DAWs, and is nothing specifically to do with Logic.
All all the instruments, and mixer channels have volume controls, to let you control their volume and place them where they need to be for your needs.

  • Setting input level when recording

Is there a way to set the input level in Audition when recording? I can't seem to find it if it's there.
Here's the setup: Audition is installed on a new Dell Vostro (plenty of RAM and speed) with an M-Audio Delta 1010 LT card. The input is coming directly from a broadcast console at a radio station. Audition is used to record incoming phone calls along with the DJ's mic for playback later: DJ mic on left channel, incoming call on right channel.
Broadcast consoles are different beasts from recording consoles. The input channels of a broadcast console do not have variable/selectable pads or gain... so the audio signal is fairly hot.
The 1010 LT card has a "control panel mixer" but it seems to have no affect whatsoever on the input level. As a result, the signal clips when it's recorded into Audition.
So... is there a way to set the input level in Audition when recording?

If you are using a soundcard with input from pro console you need one that accepts pro levels I'm afraid! You will need to attenuate the input to the Delta 1010 by some external means like inline 10 - 14dB attenuators for instance.

  • HR (Planning database) Does the account type matter when suppressing rows?

Does the account type matter when using the Advanced Options row suppression?
The report will suppress all the 0 rows if the suppression is based on a column with a Planning acct type "Revenue", but it doesn't do anything if the suppression is based on a column with a Planning acct type "saved assumption."
Just wondering if this is why I can't get the report to suppress the rows. Everything else seems to be the same in the report.
Thanks in advance for any assistance on this.

Can you tell us how your Conditional Suppression is set up? If this report consists of account types Revenue and Saved Assumption only, and your conditional suppression works just on Revenue account types, you can insert a second condition for the Saved Assumption account types.
Let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions.
    Cheers,

  • Can't adjust input level when using usb microphone

    Hey guys,
I'm very familiar with this version of Garageband, and just started using a Blue Snowball USB mic. When I plug it in and set the drivers accordingly, the input volume slider is greyed out, making it inaccessible. Is there a trick to being able to adjust input volume?

Option Click on the Volume slider icon in the menu bar and choose Sound Preferences. Choose the interface and you should be able to see the input level.

  • I get an Error when I try to input levels.

I am trying to make an avoider game that has levels. When I make the first level everything works fine but when I try to make level 2 I get this error.
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
              at TheRun_fla::MainTimeline/onenter()[TheRun_fla.MainTimeline::frame5:11]
If someone can help me fix this error it would be much appreciated.

Frame 5, line 11... that should be the line of code where the problem is...
The 1009 error indicates that one of the objects being targeted by your code is out of scope.  This could mean that the object....
    - is declared but not instantiated
    - doesn't have an instance name (or the instance name is mispelled)
    - does not exist in the frame where that code is trying to talk to it
    - is animated into place but is not assigned instance names in every keyframe for it
    - is one of two or more consecutive keyframes of the same objects with no name assigned in the preceding frame(s).

Not sure if it uses data, but that allows you to multitask.  To save battery life you should close out of all the apps.

  • My aux input does not work. When i put in my headphones my mac does not respond, and my speakers just continues as normal. What to do?

My aux input does not work. When i put in my headphones my mac does not respond, and my speakers just continues as normal. What to do?

I had the same issue. Initially i thought i need to take it to apple for replacing the aux port. But luckily I was able to fix it by resetting the PRAM . To reset the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
You can try this before you take to apple store. It may work if you are lucky. Good luck

  • " -- Failed consistency check for this level" when doing Estimate Levels

    Hello again,
When you run "Estimate Levels" and you get "<-- Failed consistency check for this level"
What does it really mean? Can this break, because of NULL values in logical keys? Or perhaps anything else? Thanks
    Thanks

    Thomas,
since you've seen this before....did you have a problem doing "Estimate Levels" when you had measures in the hierarchy (usually they get there when you select a level for measure in its settings). I suspect the problem is in the measure - using FILTER function which references the dimension.
    Thanks

  • Stop the built-in mic's input level from decreasing during videochat?

No matter how many times my girlfriend sets her Late 2008 15" MBP's built-in mic's input level to max, the input level always decreases on its own during our videochat sessions.
Since the level decreases more when she watches loud videos during our videochat sessions, I'm thinking the input level is auto-adjusting itself to the increase in noise level or something.
I've googled and search the discussion forums to no avail.
If anyone knows how to stop this auto-adjusting thing from happening, I'm all ears.

    Hi,
I have seen a couple of threads on this now.
The iChat 4 "Fix" does not seem to work.
Deleting the other .plist to do with Audio in that Audio folder in Snow Leopard also doe not help.
I have only seen it posted about internal mic on iMacs and laptops.
However I do not suffer from it myself.
I have tried changing an Audio setting and comparing the Date Modified column items to see if anything gets changed.
The SystemPreferences.plist in my Home Folder list that I opened the Sound preferences but not the settings.
None of the Audio .plists are showing any change. (in Hard Drive/Library/Preferences)
At the moment I am mystified as to where any setting is stored.
