OS X Internet Recovery
Mac models introduced after public availability of OS X Lion include the ability to start up directly from an Internet-based version of the OS X Recovery system. OS X automatically uses this feature when the Recovery System on the hard disk isn't available (such as when your hard disk encounters an issue, or when your hard disk has been replaced or erased). OS X Internet Recovery lets you start your Mac directly from Apple's servers. Starting up from this system performs a quick test of your memory and hard drive to check for hardware issues.
OS X Internet Recovery presents a limited interface at first, with only the ability to select your preferred Wi-Fi network and, if needed, entering a passphrase. Next, OS X Internet Recovery downloads and starts from a Recovery System image. From there, you are offered the same utilities and options as a local Recovery System.

  • HT1386 I have just had to reinstall Windows and will need to put iTunes back on it. I was unable to back-up my library file beforehand so I want to know if plugging my iPod Classic into iTunes will wipe everything from it, or will iTunes sync with what's

Obviously I do not want to have to resubscribe to Podcasts (though it wouldn't be TOO much of a hassle) or reupload all my music/CDs (rather more of a hassle) if I can help it.
If anyone knows whether I can get away without having to reupload everything then I would be grateful for the information
    Thanks

    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /My Music/iTunes/ folder from your backup to /My Music/.
    Launch iTunes.
Since it is the same library (not just the same music) it will work fine.
That is all you need to do.

Does Apple TV do mirroring from an iMac? If not, how can I play content from my iMac to my Apple TV?

Thanks. That's what I thought but I bought an Apple TV anyway. Probably going to have to get a Mac Mini for everything I want though.

Your hard drive has probably failed.

  • Recovery disc missing from new iMac (late 2012)

My iMac doesn't boot from the recovery partition. If I boot with the option key (alt) it only shows one bootable volume. If I boot with cmd-R it takes longer but still boots from the main volume.
I've run Disk Utility in debug mode and it shows that there is a recovery partition. I've mounted it, and looks as if it has the right stuff on it:
    com.apple.boot.P
    com.apple.recovery.boot
    System
So, what is going on? It looks as if the boot process isn't recognising the recovery disc as a valid boot volume.
    Any idea why?
The machine is fresh out of the box this week and I've not yet migrated my old system, so it's about as standard as you can get.

Thank you Mende, for that useful suggestion!
Unfortunately, looking it up, I find that recovery over the Internet takes several hours.
Also, I've updated my machine from the 10.8.2 it shipped with to 10.8.3 and I still don't ahve a recovery drive.
As I said, I can see that there is a recovery partition and it appears to have a recovery system on it, is there some way that I can make it visible to the boot loader? It looks as if that is all that's missing...
Has Apple said anything about why it has left the recovery drive off the latest iMacs? It seems to me to be an even odder thing to leave out than the Infra Red connection (which is very annoying because I've a very useful and expensive Apple Remote that's quite new and now useless - it doesn't work for my Macbook Pro either). I can understand them leaving the DVD drive out and it wasn't too much hassle to connect an external DVD which works quite well.

  • Transferring everything from old imac G3 to new mac

I don't know much about computers, so sorry if this is a stupid question... I have an old imac G3 which I bought new in 1999 or 2000. It is system 9. I don't use it anymore and it's not hooked up to the internet. I do have a lot of important pictures and documents on it. I'm planning on buying a new mac one of these days (don't know exactly which model yet but probably a laptop) and I want to know if all my old documents and files will be able to go straight onto any new mac with the latest OS. My documents are in microsoft word, whatever version of it was around 7 years ago. I have an external disk drive for my imac which plugs in with a USB port. My files are backed up on disks with this disk drive and I guess this would be how I transfer the files to a new computer. Would an external disk drive with old software for system 9 also work on a new system? Basically my question is, does any old software or application for system 9 also work on system 10?

In addition to the examples that Eustace provided, I recently found that AppleWorks v6 that was bundled with many iMacs will also run under OSX. My daughter had immediate need of a computer and no money to buy a new one. I upgraded our unused old iMac 400DV to Panther and added a larger hard drive. As I had no additional licenses for Office and my daughter needed a WP program, I restored AppleWorks from the iMac restore CD to the OS9 partition I made on the new drive.
When I launched AppleWorks, it opened in X, not "Classic." It had a few problems but it basically worked That version was 6.0.4 and the update to v6.2.9 available here cleared up all the little problems.
Upgrading an office computer to one that ran OSX showed me that any MS Office document created with Office 98 (OS9) would open just fine with Office 2004 (OSX). When you save the document it automatically converts it to the later version unless you tell it not to.

  • Will internet recovery wipe my Mac?

I am having some issues whith my Mac freezing:
2014-04-13 20:52:01,097 WindowServer[108]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Aperture" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
2014-04-13 20:52:02,746 WindowServer[108]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Aperture" after 2.65 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
After repairing the hard drive I thought I'd give Apple Hardware Test a go. I have a MacBookPro10,1 (early 2013) wit 10.9.2. I suspect I don't have a recovery partition.
When I press the D key while rebooting, it goes straigt to internet recovery, asking me WiFi credentials. Can I continue or will it wipe my Mac?

So you are saying that after the message “Starting recovery process from network. This might take a while.” (see picture below) I will be given an interface similar to disk utility first, where I can choose what I want to do before anything is erased from my hard drive?

  • What is -2000F error code mean while doing Internet Recovery?

My new macbookpro (1 hour old) crashed while trying to setup dual boot and now only works with internet recovery.
But no matter how many times i restart and connect via wifi it always shows www.apple.com/support follow by -2000F in second line.
What does this mean? Bad internet connection? None compatiable WIFI router? (Linksys E4200).
    Thanks

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/your problems.  A message board is the LAST place you should be.

  • How do I wipe everything from my old iPhone?

I have successfully cloned all from old to new iPhone. Hopw can I erase everything from old iPhone?

If desired, move photos/videos off the Camera Roll: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
If desired, backup the device to iTunes or iCloud: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
    Then, on the device...
    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Off
    Settings > FaceTime > Off
Settings > iCloud > (scroll down) Delete Accout (this only unregisters and deletes it off the device)
Settings > iTunes & App stores.  Tap the AppleID and sign out.
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
    Unregister your device at https://supportprofile.apple.com
It will now be ready to activate for the new user.

I replaced my iPhone with a Samsung Galaxy5 and I am not receiving all of my text messages now. The rep at the store told me to go to iTunes and take my phone # off of the account and that would fix the problem. Is that true? What does iTunes have to do with text messages anyway?

You need to remove your phone number from the iMessage system.

  • Intermittently, when I try to enter the internet through Safari, it freezes up and won't fully load in the internet. If I turn the iMac off and start it again, it seems fine. I have had my internet provider check everything from their end.

Intermittently, when I try to enter the internet through Safari on my Imac, it freezes up so that the loading line only goes 1/3 way across and then stops. If I shut down the computer and then restart, it usually loads fine. I have had my internet provider check eveything form their end and it is fine. I suspect that I have a software conflict. My provider and others have said that I should use FireFox because Safari is not that stable. I am running OSX Maverick on my system. This was a recent download.  Is anyone else having this problem and have you any ideas how I can correct it.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help to identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the state of the system that may be pertinent.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: You copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, proceed anyway.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script. It does nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to be cautious about running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The script will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but it's really a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately, leaving the Terminal window empty. If that doesn't happen, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter your password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again.
    Please note:
☞ This procedure is all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted. When typing it, you won't see what you're typing. Make sure caps lock is off.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard when you see "[Process completed]" in the Terminal window.
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

  • Moving everything from old imac to new?

I am sure that this info is here somewhere but I can't find it.
I am buying a new imac and want to transfer itunes, photos, user accounts etc etc basically whatever I have on my current imac to the new computer. How do I do this ?
I must stress that I am not confident about my computer knowledge. I can do what I need to do but I don't understand the why's and wherefores so can anyone tell me if they've done this themselves?
Is it something that someone such as myself could manage sucessfully?
    Thanks.

I had "everything" transferred from my old eMac to my new iMac when I bought it three months ago. When I access a transferred file i get this pop-down note:
This document cannot be autosaved because you don't have
write(sic) access privileges to the folder that it's in. Your changes
will be lost if this computer malfunctions or loses power before
    you save them.
Can you help me find out how to "save them."

  • I accidentally turned on parental controls, when I try to turn them off it says my password is wrong when I know it's not. What do I do so that I won't have to wipe everything from my computer?

Trying to fix something else in my settings I accidentally turned my parental controls on. When I tried to disable them it said my password or adminstrative name was wrong when I know they are both right. I even tried to change my password to the account but that didn't help. I don't want to have to delete my account and am not sure how to back everything up if that is the only option. Is there a simple solution to this?

If you have Restricted your MAIN account in the perental controls that may be the reason. You may have to create a new Administrators account to change the settings on the parent controls.
Not sure as I have never used that feature on any computer I own.
