Does iOS modify images when saved to camera roll?

As in, if I save an image from gmail so that I can then upload it to Dropbox, will that resulting image file still be the same raw uncompressed image as if I did it directly on a PC?
This has been a big concern for me for years, I've always avoided it by using RDP when I need to save a picture I want to keep.

Should I ask this under iPhone instead? Or perhaps there's a better forum to ask?

  • Does iPhoto alter images when importing from camera ?(+ tip for slideshow)

I came across the following article:
    http://www.andrewburke.orconhosting.net.nz/mac/builtin.htm#photo
The claim here is that during import iPhoto alters images in some way. The iPhoto experts, Terence OldToad, LarryHN and others, could you please comment, what's your opinions on this ?
    Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows
If you are running a slideshow in either Preview or iPhoto, you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine.
When I import images from my Nikon to the Mac, I keep them outside of iPhoto and at their original size, as an archive from which I might eventually produce some prints. From there I choose the best examples that I want to display onscreen and copy those out of the archive for processing. Each one of those favorites that I've chosen is then tweaked in an image editor (I use Gimp Shop) and the final step before sharpening is to resize it down to match the dimensions of my display.
My iMac is 1440 by 900, so if an image is narrower than that ratio I scale it so the height is exactly 900; if it's wider I scale it so the width is exactly 1440. After these tweaked and resized images are finished I import only those into iPhoto. Then when I run a slideshow they are displayed exactly at their original size (not stretched or shrunk to fit the screen) and the difference is stunning.

What he says is +"you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine."+
The title of the piece is +"Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows".+ He is talking about you resizing photos before you import so they will match the screen size during the display of a slide show on the screen - not iPhoto changing anything during the import of the photo but during the display of it - This is a bit like the cropping during printing questions - if you want to control exactly have is being shown (or printed) rather than use a generalized scheme to make photos fit a non native size then you much do the changes yourself
I'm sure that he is correct but since I use iPhoto as a photo library manager which lets me show quick and easy slideshows, I have no problem - *my original, unaltered photos are there in iPhoto* and available for use as I see fit - the degree of modification that takes place in the display of a slideshow has never even been noticeable to me - but then I do not see iPhoto as a single purpose slide show viewer - in fact that is a very minor feature for me

  • When I switch off i5,all the pictures saved in camera roll is deleted

When I switched off my new i5 ,all the pictures saved in camera roll is deleted. How can I fix this problem?

Nevermind, everyone! I fixed it myself! Anyone who has or ever gets this problem, do understand that it isnt easy to fix it, but it's worth it. All you have to do is go to the photo, and tap "Edit". Then tap "Crop", and just a little bit will do the trick. Then, tap "Save". It will probably come up with a white background. Unfortunately, you must do each picture one by one. If you really want to, you can go back to any picture you've cropped, tap "Edit", then tap "Revert to Original". This will change the photo back to it's original size.

  • Grayed out, weird photos when importing from Camera Roll

OK, wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? I use Photoshop's Bridge import to pull my photos of my iPhone 3Gs. When I do, I often have these weird photos - I'm not totally sure why they are happening. And, the good news is that once they are pulled, they appear to be fine, but I'm just looking to see if I'm not the only one.
They seem to be possibly related to:
    a) being taken by an alternate camera app (I've tried several, Camera Genius, Snapture, CameraFlash and CameraZoom - yep, trying to get a better photo!),
    b) being altered in some way (I've used Photogene to improve some, but it makes a duplicate?), or
    c) being copied or saved to the CameraRoll from another program (I'm a Phanfare user and their Photon app is phenomenal).
So, some pictures of examples below, but as long as they images are OK when they come in, is it just fine? I always worry when something is not what it should be on an Apple device or within an Apple software.
    Thx - Alexa
(Saved to Camera Roll from Photon - you can see though that others saved the exact same way are fine?):

    Hi Lawrence -
Thanks for your response! I'm on a Mac so my options are different, but I think about using a more basic viewer and went to iPhoto and looked at the pictures on my phone as a device, and they all look fine (or some are not duplicates) - so maybe it's just a Photoshop import thing or ghosting issue?

  • Photos and camera apps crash when I hit camera roll/take a picture

After updating to ios5, I can no longer access my camera roll, not take a picture.  When I hit camera roll, photos crashes.  When I take a picture it says saving, then crashes.  I have tried turning off the apps and reopening them. I have tried restarting/resetting.  I have tried turning it off and letting it sit for 3 days. I tried accessing my camera roll through other apps like facebook, twitter, photoshop but it crashes. I tried to access my camera roll from iphoto and import my pictures but my iphone no longer comes up in iphoto.  I feel as though that restoring it may be the only option left, but I do not want to lose my photos and there's still no guarantee that photos and camera will work after restoring.  Anyone else ever hear of this before? Help!

There is a similar thread elsewhere...but to save you the search, simply go to this page:
    http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/how-to/how-to-fix-iphone-camera-roll-crash-and-phot os-turned-to-other-in-itunes/
The discussion in the other thread leads to that link...
Simply put...I had the same problem, found that link, solved the problem!

Is there anyway of checking they are in itunes before I restore?

    Any suggestions?

  • HT4859 When I turn camera roll backup to OFF, and those same photos are on my other devices, will they remain on them, even though icloud will delete them from storage?

When I turn camera roll backup to OFF, and those same photos are on my other devices, will they remain on them?  I know they will not be on icloud storage,
but will I still have them on my devices?

Deleting the icloud backup totally is pretty scary.  If my phone accidentally went swimming, I wouldn't be able to restore all the data with icloud.  I was trying to find a way to delete only old backups (which you say do not exist), or if I could just delete the photos from the backup.  I guess I could delete the icloud backup, switch off the camera roll from backing up, and then do an immediate backup of everything else.  What do you think?
I am not a good apple person.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Need help with info about the possibility of altering images when saved in a different format

I am very new to the design world.  I have a printing business and received and image to be printed in Adobe Acrobat (I think).  I needed to resize the image to be printed and took it into Photoshop CS6 where I cropped the edges.  I then resave it as a PDF and took into a printer software, Fiery.  Fiery has an Impose function where you can repeat an image to layout it on the correct paper size.  It essentially just copies the original image several times depending on the layout.  This particular image I repeated to 3 up and 1 across.  When printed it came out with a magenta streak through the center image only.  I have had the machine checked and they are adamant it's not a printer issue but a software issue.  That once I altered the original image by resizing it that I altered the image and that I can't expect it to come out as seen on the screen.  I've printed it all sorts of different ways and it only occurs with the 3 up 1 across image.  I know that images can be changed when saved from program to program but this situation does not make sense that it is only the one area and layout that this shows up. I would appreciate any help, input, answers that anyone has.  Again, I'm new to this and would like to understand if this is a potential for further printing jobs so that I can do what I need to avoid this situation.
    Thank you for your time.
    Jessica

    Jessica,
Without knowing how the original graphic was created it is hard to tell you how to handle it. What is the name of the file? (Only the file suffix is important). If the file's origin was in a drawing program and/Or InDesign, then the document should be handled differently if the document is a raster image best handled by a program like Photoshop.

  • IPhoto iPhone app... degrading image when saved?

Having the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and using the camera app that apple includes degrades the resolution size when after you take a picture THEN use EDIT and apply auto correct.
When you save the image the fine becomes NOT full resolution for some reason?
When shot using the "iPhone 4" for starters the shot image and saved is 1936x2592 px (5MP)
If you EDIT the picture after shooting it using the Apple supplied app and save the image the size NOW becomes 1529x2048 px (3MP)
I have purchased iPhoto app and in using it find the same loss in resolution when editing a image and saving it, you get the same loss in size and resolution in your camera roll when you check size.
WHAT is going on here Apple?
I have MANY iPhotography apps and have NEVER seen that happen UNLESS they are free or what ever so from what I can tell Apple takes the image at FULL resolution, but when you EDIT the image using THERE camera app or now the just released iPhoto app ($4.99) you end up with NON full resolution images.
ANYONE have a explanation of why and how to get a full resolution shot to stay that way if edited with Apple camera app or iPhoto app, were is the menu to turn that off?
When having Location Services on... Saving from the Photo app, after using the edit buttion DOES save the image at full resolution but in iPhoto app is DOES not and always see the degrade of the image to 1529x2048 px (3MP) every time... What is going on here and can be confirmed after many times testing this.
Maybe NOT using those products might be the way to go. The iPhoto app is generic at best anyways so it's no loss in what it does and WAITING to see a full review here soon hopefully.
    Looking for your comments.
    Thanks.

Yeah my point is though... Its like a console. I have a game that I have played on my console 3 years ago. I have a saved game half way through and now I want to continue that game... Unfortunately because i turned the game off despite saving it - it hasn't actually saved?
Surely when itunes syncs your game data across it should sync the current saved game that you have with it?
If thats not the case and Apple expect you to restart a game everytime you take it off your phone and put it back on it surely your to expect people to get annoyed with it? surely im not the only person that has noticed and become annoyed with it.

  • Pixelated Image when Saving as .pdf

I've been searching the forums looking for a solution to this problem, but I just can't seem to figure it out. Thank you for helping me out.
I'm making an 8.5 x 11 inch document and I would like to save it as a .pdf. The text looks great and comes out incredibly clear. One of the images that I have placed within the document comes out looking terribly pixelated. I know I probably need to alter the dpi or such, but I need some instruction on how. I have no compression in place when saving as a .pdf and have picked the highest quality option.
The document also displays the picture as pixelated when I save in .png form.
The image that I am placing in the document is in .png form. It seems quite large and has to be sized down to fit appropriately in the document.
How can I alter things so that the image also looks clear?
Any advice that you have would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nicole

    Hi Nicole,
Continuing from Trevor a bit, if you can possibly get the original artword file, that would be best. Unfortunately my experience with Illustrator tracing is "it depends." Where it does the potentially lower quality is the tracing of logos, although the more detailed, the better the results might be. In things like arcs or leaves, AI is trying to follow the line, but if the line is anti-aliased, it doesn't really know where that line is and what it guesses at isn't always what we'd like.
Albeit detailed, it sometimes is best to replicate it in AI (of course you'd charge them for this) and that will give you complete control on how it's going to look.
[Note: as an Illustrator practice technique, I look for coloring book artwork and try to replicate it in AI. I take the image (scan it if necessary), and place it in a layer in AI and lock the layer. Then I trace over that image in AI trying to replicate the line-art as best I can. I've found it's a great way to develope techniques and solve problems. Even if you never use these images, it's a great practice mechanism to develop your abilities and force you to find solutions within AI that you might have not thought to look up.]
However, as Trevor states, if all you have is the JPEG, saving it back to PS is too late. The damage is done. And Acrobat can only put out based on what it got in.
    Good luck.

  • "Insufficient data for an image" when saving a file

    I'm running Acrobat 9.5.0 on a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.8.
After scanning a document from my Canon MX882, or opening and editing an existing pdf I get the following error when I try to save the file:
    Insufficient data for an image
When I try to save the file again, I get this:
The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (109).
Sometimes the error also has (8) instead of (109).
When this occurs, the thumbnail of the page appears correct in the left pane; however, the content of the page itself is entirely or partially missing.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    -c

I am also having this problem, especially with scanned documents. Since I need to download scanned documents in my work this is a big problem!Sometimes I can read but not save the document, sometimes one or two of the pages will be blank from the start. I have the latest version of Adobe Reader XI (11.0.10). I tried reducing the page zoom, a suggested workaround on this page: Acrobat: “Insufficient data for an image” error after updating to 10.1.4 or 9.5.2,  but that did not help at all. FWIW I use a Windows 8.1 PC with 4 GB RAM. I usually download PDFs from the internet using Firefox.

  • Safari on my account does not display images when you open a picture.

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed. Safari on my account does not display images most of the time when you open a picture like (www.example.com/example/example.jpg or any other format). If the image does not display, I can drag from the corner, it displays the image. However, pdf does not work at all. I have to choose open in Preview to view the pdf file. I can even show the example:
Sometimes the images work like right now.
    2. This is the time when the images do not work.

Hi all the real problem was this...
The issue was that the wee rubber eye piece around the viewfinder had slipped out of its seat slightly and was covering the sensor for the LCD. I Just checked the rubber eye piece bit  pushed right down till it clipped into place and now not obstructing the LCD sensor as the picture displays both with the LCD auto off enabled or disabled !! simple thing but a massive trap !

  • Changes in LRmob are not saved to camera roll on ipad...

I just have been working on a batch of photographs on ipad and saved all the worked on images on my camera roll in ipad. When I opened my camera roll none of the changes had been saved, the photographs were the ones I had synced from desktop to ipad.
The changes have been saved on my desktop though.
Is it not possible to save the file with applied changes to camera roll for sharing with Instagram and Foap? If we can't save changes to camera roll I might as well stay with VSCO cam in ipad then...
A work around is of course that I can pluck them back off probably from the Adobe cloud, but that is another step added to my workflow.
I was hoping to use LRmob because the syncing is wonderful, and I start with LR for all my photographs.
My current workflow is to import pics in LR, then drag the ones I want for Foap and Instagram via iPhoto and shared stream to get them onto ipad or iphone. Import in vsco and from there send to instagram or Foap. I know, rather heavy workload.
I had hoped that LRmobile would have cut this load in half...
I wonder if it is possible to make the changes applied in LRmob savable in camera roll... Since LRmob has been designed for idevices, it does need a saving option on the device. Otherwise it's missing a major feature.
I must admit that the filters and processing are fab... My pics do look so smashing on ipad air.
I am very happy with LRmob apart from the question title...

Thanks Rikk, that is how I understood it. Thanks for your speedy answer, I really appreciate it. And that is exactly how I shared, I just thought that the changed images did not go to the camera roll. I will try again!
    Thank you so much!
