Am going to buy an iphone5 from uk apple store and am living in cyprus and am wondering if it will work on my GSM carrier here in cyprus as it was my iphone 4s. My question is: is iphone5 from official apple store fuctory unlock for all GSM carrier??

Consider yourself lucky that your MacBook is still working. Now, turn it off. Wine may have damaged other parts of your computer.
Then, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. It will be a very expensive repair, as it's not covered by warranty and the logic board has to be replaced. In some cases, it may be better to get a new MacBook.

There is no online Apple store for Cyprus, so how do you think you are going to buy the phone? You need to have an address and credit card for the country whose store you are using and they will not ship outside the country, so if you were thinking of using the US Apple store without a US address or credit card, think again, because you won't be able to do it.

And the answer is in all of that rhetoric above...the simple way to tell as a user is to take the sim out, put in a sim for another carrier and see if the iPhone activates. If it does, it is not locked. If it does not, it is locked.
If you bought this iPhone used, you will not be able to tell if it was unlocked when Apple sold it or if it was unlocked by a carrier after sale.
If the iPhone is locked, as Apple told you, then it was sold locked. iPhones Apple sells unlocked do not get themselves locked during use or activation. They stay unlocked. So, if the iPhone is locked now it was not sold as unlocked by Apple.

Everything I am reading says that the iPhone 5 is unlocked for GSM and they are required to by law (FCC). Has anyone tried a ATT or T-mobile nano sim in iPhone in USA to verify ? Asking since I want to be able to sell my phone and market it to all carriers

If you buy it directly from apple as unlocked yes. I know some places sell "unlocked" phones that lock to the first network you connect them to. Your best bet is to buy directly from apple.

The program is for replacement since Apple does not repair iDevices...you take your non-working or damaged iPhone to an Apple store genius bar, or send to Apple service, and they provide a refurbished unit as a replacement, for a fee, of course. You will have to talk with Apple to see if you get all components or just the iPhone replaced.
With AppleCare+ you can have two out-of-warranty replacements for a cost of $49 each.
