Does iPhoto 5 Work With TIFF Pictures ?

I always thought that iPhoto worked exclusively with jpegs and that if you imported any other format it would be converted to jpeg.
I was therefore surprised when I imported some TIFF files and they remained full size TIFFs.
Can anyone explain or shed any light on this?
Was it jpegs only in earlier versions?
Ian.

Thanks Niel.
I actually found a book with the answer a couple of hours after posting but could not use my computer to let people know.
I am now wondering where I got this firmly held belief that iPhoto only worked with jpegs - normally I use Photoshop, but have recently discovered that iPhoto does some things a lot easier!
Ian.

  • Does iPhoto Work With TIFF?

I have a camera that produces RAW files but Aperture does not support it. I find it difficult not to be angry at Apple for designing Aperture in such a way that they are slow to include any new cameras (and ignore quite a few of them. (eg the very popular Olympus Pen E-P1 was introduced in July. Other image editors like Lightroom updated to support the camera months ago but Aperture ignores it. Same with my camera (Panasonic GH1) so even though I own Aperture I have to abandon it and use Lightroom or Silkypix. I wionh't use Aperture again and won't upgrade even if they support my camera eventually but I do like iPhoto for the books and calendars.
I can export from Silkypix TIFF versions of my photos. Does iPhoto work well with those TIFF images or should I convert them to JPEG for making books, calendars etc?

Don't blame Aperture and Apple for those proprietary RAW formats that camera makers insist on using and change for each new camera.
The ignoring is being done by the camera manufactures in not getting the information out to the software people in a timely manner before the camera is introduced to the buying public. It takes time for Apple to get the information from the camera manufacturers and develop built in compatibility for the new formats.
Oh, really?? Then why is it that Lightroom and virtually every other Raw Conversion software have support for for cameras like the Olympus E-P1 and the Panasonic G1, GH1 and GF1 since just after the cameras were released while Aperture not only has no support but does not give a road map as to when support will be given. There are some cameras by well known names not supported by Aperture 3 years after their introduction.
Apple has a system with Aperture where Raw Conversion seems to happen at the OS level and the addition of support for new cameras only happens with new OS updates. And there are many cameras with Raw files which do seem to be ignored by Apple. We like to think of Apple as being a leader in computer and software development but with Aperture they seem to be behind everyone else in camera support. If this continues then Aperture will continue to lose ground to Adobe and others.

Can someone help me figure out how to get my iphoto open again.  It says...Error message: "Iphoto can't be open because of a problem. " Message says, "Check with developer to make sure Iphoto works with this version of Mac OS x. Wouldn't update Iphoto when my husband was doing updates..

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud. Is iCloud pushing my phone's PhotoStream to my computer if it doesn't have the latest OS? Thanks so much for whoever can help!

iCloud will not work with your computer because iCloud requires Lion. Lion requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better. For you to have iCloud and PhotoStream you would need to buy a newer Mac Intel model meeting the requirements for Lion:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • How does iPhoto work? What are the guts?

I am a recent switcher from Windows and have been running OSX since the black MacBooks have come out. I used and loved Picasa on windows for pics. I have been using iPhoto and have run into problems.
I am trying to get my head around just how iPhoto works. I am interested in how iPhoto imports, stores and works with photo libraries and photos. It seems extremely convoluted to me. Here is an example.
In my 'Pictures' folder, I have folders: 'Personal 2000' , 'Personal 2001' , 'Personal 2002' , etc, etc
    - I open iPhoto and choose 'Import to Library...' I choose to import a single folder from 'Personal 2002' titled 'xmas'
    - I now have in that same 'Pictures' folder a folder called: 'iPhoto Library'
    - in the 'iPhoto Library' folder are now folders called:
    - 'Data'
    - 'Modified'
    - 'Originals'
    - In each of these new folders (data, modified, originals) are now folders with just years
    -'2002'
    - and then in '2002' in each of those folders there is a folder called 'xmas'
    - and in each xmas folder there are now four copies of my original photo
So I have gone from one original photo to four photo in four different places. This is crazy! I am trying to get my head around things and understand how to work with iPhoto and organize things but I could use some help.
Please help me understand. Does the book iPhoto 6 the missing manual help explain????

    Mike
The point of iPhoto is that it does the file management for you.
It's a database, with built in image viewer and lightweight editing. The database is designed (like all databases) so that you interact with the data via the application, not the Finder.
So in your iPhoto Library Folder you will find various files that make up the Library, plus three Folders.
Originals: This contains the photos as they were downloaded from your camera (or scanner)
Modified: This contains the photos that you have edited or altered in any way - fixed red-eye, rotated, whatever. This allows you to use the Photos -> Revert To Originall command - which allows you to dump changes that you may not like.
The data folder contains the thumbnails that the app uses to display the pics in the iPhoto WIndow . SO you can see there is no actual duplication, but apparently much!
If you use iPhoto to do the file management then your folders become irrelevant, and once your content that the photos are safe in iPhoto you can trash them.
You can keep your own folders and do your own file management (go Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck Importing - Copy Files to iPhoto Library Folder ...) and then iPhoto will leave your file structure alone, However it will still make the data and Modifieds folders.
Through the iPhoto WIndow you can do everything you need to do with the photos. You can make slide shows and albums, keyword for fast searching, make smart self-updating albums, effortlessly export the files. Evne just drag and drop one to the desktop. In all caes iPhoto works with a COPY of the file, so that your original remains safe and sound. And of course, you can completlely recreate your folder organisation in the iPhoto WIndow .
I hope that's clear, if you have further questions feel free to ask more.
    Regards

I used migration to send photos form my Mac Book to my I Mac now i get an error message "iPhoto can not be opened because of a problem"  Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Max OSX.  You may need to install any available updates or reinstall IPhoto.
I tried installing Iphoto it said it was downloaded successfully. I still get the error messafe, and can not open any photos of program,  any suggestions?

What version of iPhoto do you have on the Macbook and on the iMac? What systems are you running on the Macbook and on the iMac?
Does the message only refer to "a problem" or does it specify what it is?

  • I have tried VERY unsuccessfully to install iphoto 9.2.3 update...it says it has successfully updated - then on opening says: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X.

I have tried VERY unsuccessfully to install the new iphoto 9.2.3 update.
I have installed it several times both from the appstore and from Apple Support downloads...it says it has 'successfully updated' - then on opening iphoto, a dialogue box pops up and says:
iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
Insane...I have all my updates including Lion 10.7.3 why does APPLE KEEP SENDING BETAS AS A REAL PRODUCT?
Does anyone know how to copy over a backup from a twinned drive Backup? What files etc.
    Thanks tons...

    Thanks Terence,
I did get it working finally...and your last advice was what I needed.
I am embarassed that I was an early adopter...SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER and read the problems before creating some for myself.
This was an excercise in frustration, because of the obtuse division between the appstore and Apple Support downloads... it was a bit of a circuitous route...strange that with all the security reciepts and tracking that Apple goes to to prevent piracy... which Steve by his own admission used to build Apple...
Why aren't the server scripts smart enough to say…”HEY DUMMY you can't use this download because you purchased the last iPhoto upgrade from the appstore...and… DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME and precious data BUDGET downloading this gargantuan file which will eat 20% of your expensive 5Gb monthly data allotment!!!…and NOT WORK…only pretend to…and then foul your system….kill your productivity and turn your hair whiter…even worse than LION did.
I am just so antagonized by the inept scripts in recent installations that don't do a diagnostic before allowing installation that is going to corrupt things...I had less effort and frustration when I ran my ATARI with a MAC emulator...rarely lost any productivity to nonsense.
I AM TIRED OF BETAs dressed as products...designed and rushed out for Apple toys that once were tools of the creative trade...COREL...may still have a chance at a comeback if Apple keeps pumping out toys instead of the venerable tools we once adored as income enhancers.

  • Elements 10 canvas not working with tiff images; works fine with jpegs. What to do?

Elements 10 canvas not working with tiff images; works fine with jpegs. What to do? It does not allow me to add a colored canvas, only a blank canvas.

Perhaps some of the tiffs are already layers.
In other words, since jpegs don't support layers, they all ways open with one locked background layer, but the tiff format does
support layers so the tiffs don't have to have a locked background layer and can already be a regular layer that supports transparency.
For the tiffs you could add a new color fill layer below and use the color you want the enlarged canvas to be.
On pse 10 look at the bottom of the layers panel for the new adjustment of fill layer icon

  • Lightroom : does it work with 2 intern HD's in mirror

Lightroom : does it work with 2 intern data  HD's in mirror with the name for exemple H:\                 Because Windows see dis 2 intern HD's as 1 volume(1 piece)

Note: "Jan" is not my real first name

I assume you mean if you can use an internal hard disk in mirrored RAID setup?
Yes, you can, but LR will see only one of the RAID disks. Otherwise you would have redundant images in your catalog. If one disk fails, you would update the folder location to the other RAID disk.
Provided the RAID controller still works....
I had this desaster once when the RAID controller died together with one disk. It was hell of an effort to get the remaining disk readable, because it insists on its RAID controller.
So do not mistake this setup as your only backup solution.

  • Does Lightroom work with Photoshop Elements

Does Lightroom work with Photoshop Elements?

When setting up the editor in the prefs choose images of 8 bits not 16 bits, either PSD or tiff. Elements works best with 8 bit images. For example you can't use layers with 16 bit images.
Once you have set up the LR prefs you are ready to make the round trip:
    1) Ctrl+E in the Library to export selected image with develop settings or right-click and choose Open In Photoshop Elements Editor
    2) Make your adjustments in Photoshop Elements; then Ctrl+S to replace (overwrite) Lightroom export copy
    3) Ctrl+W to close in Photoshop Elements and update Lightroom thumbnail.
    On Mac OSX Cmd+E; Cmd+S; Cmd+W
The important point is to overwrite the LR export copy by using File >> Save (Ctlr+S) because a tiff or PSD file has been automatically rendered by LR based upon your preference setting for External Editing. If you use “Save As” you create a new document which LR knows nothing about. It will only show in the LR Library if you save.
