Does it support 2 (one extra) Hard drives? "GT70 2OD-831XBE"

Hi there,
So I found this laptop that I really want. Why? Because 4700MQ and GTX 780M...
BUT it has only one hard drive (7200rpm 1TB), and I would love add my 256GB SSD to it.
Question is.. Can I? Is there room for one? Does it support an extra hard drive? I have seen "GT70 2OD" models vary from 1 to 3 hard drives..
I have to ask it here, on this forum because the googles doesn't know the model number "GT70 2OD-831XBE". The BE stands for Belgium and means it has an Azerty keyboard (yes sadly enough I need it, I live there). Oh btw this one doesn't have an operating system pre-installed. I have no clue, but maybe that's what the "X" stands for?
You can check out the website for the specs (written in dutch, but I think you can manage).
If you add 'www' than this is the link: laptopshop.be/product/410408/category-180904-msi-laptops/msi-gt70-2od-831xbe-azerty.html#product_specifications
I really hope you guys can help me.
Thanks.

Thank you very much for your response darkhawk.
So either way I will always be able to fit a 2nd hard drive in there?
Because there is only one hard drive in there, which means there is a free bay physically (wether it is for SATA or SuperRaid 2).
Are there GT70 models that don't have 2 bays? (This was my initial question, I now notice it was confusing.)
And yeah if there is a 2nd slot it probably won't be SuperRaid 2 (which is good in my case ).
This will be my first MSI laptop so I'm very new to the brand, the used hardware and model numbers.
Thank's again!
A GT70 is a GT70 is a GT70.
Basically, no matter what GT70 (as of writing this...keep that in mind) it is, it will have 2 x 2.5" bays. In some cases, 1 bay will be taken up by a SuperRaid/SuperRaid 2 (older models like my 0NE came with SuperRaid, newer 2OE's and such come with SuperRaid 2) card, in others it will be an open/free slot.
As I said, it will have 2 bays no matter what. I'm just not sure if the 2nd bay will be SATA or SuperRaid. Most likely it will be SATA, but I can't say with 100% certainty.

  • Qosmio G40-10E - Does it support a 12mm Hard Drive?

I've been searching on the internet for this, and I've found some websites say that it DOES support a 12mm hard drive in its bay, and others have not said this at all.
I just want confirmation that a 12mm hard drive, of 2.5", will fit into the laptop, as I wish to upgrade to the new WD 1TB 2.5" HDD, but it's not the standard 9.5mm size, but 12mm instead.
    Thanks

    Hi
I think Dr.Lamp is right. If your notebook is compatible to this HDD its possible to use HDDs with 12.5mm height. So you can buy this 1TB Western Digital HDD that you want.
After this you can give us a feedback how it works. 1TB is pretty much disk space and Im interested in it how it works. :)

  • I get error 8062 when trying to copy files from one external hard drive to another. It starts out copying files, but after 10 minutes or so it stops and I get the error 8062. The hard drive tech support says the problem is in my Macbook Air.

I cannot copy my doc and photos and videos from one external hard drive to a second external hard drive -- both plugged in to my MacBook Air -- I get Error 8062 and the copying (which seemed to be going on for 10 minutes) stops and nothing gets copied.
As any Macbook Air owner knows, there is SO LITTLE storage capacity on the computer that you have to back up big files onto an external hard drive to avoid getting the other annoying error that says you have no more memory/storage capacity/whatever the proper term is, and you cannot use the computer.
Backstory: Before this error cropped up, I had backed up lots of files to an external drive and then removed them from my computer. But then the external hard drive got corrupted and I could not access my entire photo library. Had to pay $850 to Kroll Ontrack to recover those files. I have now bought 2 new external 1 Terrabyte  hard drives as protection against another such disaster. BUT I cannot copy the files from the first hard drive where all my reovered files now sit, to another backup hard drive.
    Feeling vulnerable. Please help.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Cannot rejoin partition in extra hard drive

I have a 3TB SATA hard drive that I just created a partion upon in order to install windows (with bootcamp).
This is an extra hard drive and does not carry the operating system OSX 10.8.4.
    I alloted 1TB for windows.
I was using bootcamp and all was going lovely when I recieved an error message that windows couldnt be installed.
So, I decided I would start over again and rejoin that partition and leave windows off of my computer for now.
But, here lies my problem, I can rejoin that 1tb and that 2tb back together. There are no options.
    Help?
I know you'll probably need more info. Just ask and ye shall recieve.

There are two issues, lack of support by Disk Utility in 10.8.4 for 2.2TB and larger, but new support in Boot Camp Assistant for 3TB drives.
The likely reason though that Windows can't be installed is you have to remove all other drives during install / You need to Windows to format and use part of the drive.
Normally BCA will want to use the whole drive if there is no Mac system on it. Windows would do better if it was the only OS using the drive and format just 1TB for instance and use the rest of the drive for other purposes so Windows is within the 2.2TB region.

I figured this out.  The hard drive cover was very hard to unlock and I didn't want to break it so I thought it was more complicated than it really is.  The laptop is very well made and engineered.

There are only 2 SATA slots. One is for the hard drive and the other for an optical drive (DVD/CD-ROM..). There are also 2 PATA/IDE slots for PATA devices. There is also a PCIe x1 slot so you can use this slot to get this: http://www.span.com/product/SATA-3Gb-SATA2-PCIE1x21-PCI-Express-x1-Card-1x-SATA,-1x-5x-eSATA-support...
which is a PCIe x1 SATA card which gives you another SATA slot for a SATA device if the slot is still empty.

  • Can't get LR3 to import photos from one external hard drive to another?

I'm wanting to move thousands of raw photos from a folder in one external hard drive to another folder in a different external hard drive so all my photos are in one photo folder instead of two.  I've gone through the importing routine inside of lightroom to move the folder over to the new hard drive.  However, the photos don't move because they still show up on the old hard drive and not the new one.  What's weird is when I try to import it again, the grid view shows all the photos I'm wanting to import and when I move my cursor over any of the photos they are faded out and it says the photos are already imported.  However, if this is true why aren't they showing up in the new folder on my new external hard drive?  I know the new external hard drive works fine because I've successfully been putting all my newer photos there since I started using LR about one year ago.  The one's I'm trying to move over are older photos I shot try to using LR.
I'm stumped and need some help.  Thanks in advance.

    You wrote
"Are you saying while I'm in LR just grab the folder I want to move and drop it into the new hard drive"
Yes, that's the way to move photos & folders from within LR.
LR will then update its catalog with the new location and everything should be fine.
Importing is not a good way for moving photos / folders. Since the photos are already in the catalog you had to uncheck <Don't import suspected duplicates> or all the photos will be greyed-out in the import dialog. If you did that LR would import the photos from drive A and put it on drive B. But they would still be on drive A, so you'd have the photos on both drives and would have to delete them on drive A.
But more important: By default LR saves all edits in the catalog, they are not saved with the images themselves. That means by doing an import instead of a drag-and-drop move you'd lose your edits.
You can save your edits to xmp, a side-car file that is stored together with the image file, and the xmps would be imported. But LR does not store everything as xmp. For instance Virtual Copies, Collections, Stacking are saved only in the catalog, so by doing an import you'd lose these things.
Unless you know LR very well, it's best to use the Import Feature only for images that are NOT yet in LR.
And another thing: Before doing major operations like moving big amounts of photos, it's best to backup your catalog first.

  • Is it possible to have two encrypted time machines on one partitioned hard drive?

I am trying to use encrypted time machines for two macbooks (15" and 11") with only one USB hard drive. The problem is that after creating one encrypted time machine for my 15" in a separate partition, the hard drive does not work when plugging it into my 11".
What happens is that I am prompted to enter in my encryption password for the 15" time machine on my 11". I enter in the correct password but it does not work (i.e., password fail). The interesting part is that when I plug the hard drive into my 15", I am asked the same thing, but the password entry works.
This is my current setup for my 1tb usb hard drive:
    1) 400gb for data
    2) 400gb newly encrypted time machine for my 15"
    3) 200gb unencrypted time machine (with old 11" time machine backups) for my 11"
The hard drive is formated/partitioned in RAID format.
All I want is to be able to have two encrypted time machines for each macbook on one single hard drive. Previously I was able to maintain two separate time machines (unencrypted) on this hard drive. I decided to try and encrypt both but seems like I am getting something wrong.

I am prompted to enter in my encryption password for the 15" time machine on my 11".
If I understand correctly, you want to mount the other partition. Are you prompted to do that? Does the password include any characters other than plain letters and digits? Are you using the same keyboard layout on both machines?

  • Can i add an extra hard drive to my laptop?

I have a HP Pavilion g7-1219wm Notebook PC and i was wondering if there was room for an extra hard drive ? I'm thinking about maybe getting a 1 TB hard drive and run Win 8 on it and run Win 7 on the hard drive thats in it now because some of my apps won't work with Win 8. Thanks

No it only takes one hard drive:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnYjCML3gv8
You can dual boot Windows 8 and Windows 7 on one hard drive, however. Microsoft has made it harder than in past versions of Windows, but it can be done:

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.

  • Which one external hard drive is better for my G5's FW800 port?

    Hi,
I use a late G5 under 10.4.11. Last two weeks I used two different Western Digital disks, My Book Studio & My Book Studio Edition II but both of them don't operate well with the FW 800. They conflict with my audio interfaces (FW 400 devices). Only at FW 800. At FW 400 and Usb 2.0 they operate fine.
Because of this I have to replace the WD disk and unfortunatelly I have two options from the store I bought it. And here is that I want your help please.
Which one external hard drive from these two is better for my G5's FW800 port?

    Hi-
I think that looking at your other devices is needed.
Check out the Mackie troubleshooting guide for one:
    http://www.mackie.com/support/documents/TechFAQno.1.pdf
Page 8 has specific suggestions regarding firewire and chipsets.
    The same for the Presonus:
The firewire ports on a Mac (FW400 and FW800) run off the main logic board and share system resources. PreSonus interfaces are designed to be run in series with other firewire peripherals. If you are experiencing erratic performance or pops, clicks, and dropouts, daisy-chain your FW400 peripheral from the secondary firewire port on your PreSonus interface. If you must use a FW800 device, it is recommended to purchase a firewire expansion card for your Mac.
    http://support.presonus.com/entries/119100-optimizing-your-computer-for-audio-ma c-osx
It appears to me that both devices require enough resources that the firewire controller of the G5 may be unable to properly support both FW400 and FW800 transfer rates.
It appears that the bandwidth requirements of the devices are forcing the machine to drop FW800 in lieu of supporting FW400.
Both makers suggest use of third party PCI cards for Firewire 800, and it may be that you need additional power to the firewire card to keep up with the I/O and bandwidth demands being placed on the machines by you audio devices.
You mention that someone told you to not use the Oxford chipset, but the best external drives are all those that have the Oxford chipset.
It is important to note that not all WD MyBook drives have the same chipset, and few of the WD drives have the Oxford chipset.
Asrock and VIA are other chipsets for the WD drives.
VIA is notoriously poor as far as Mac compatibility goes.

  • If i download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space?

If I download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space on my mac?

iPhoto and Lightroom are similar apps - although LR is a far more capable app - and that the price it should be, of course. But the two apps are similar in that they both offer
    Photo Management
    Non-Destructive Processing
So, essentially, they both play the same part in the workflow.
    The procedure would be to
Download the images from the camera into the Photo Manager (regardless of which one you choose)
Review and select in the Manager
Trash the unwanted with the Manager
Process the images - that is, in most cases edit them.
It is at this point - and only this point - that Photoshop might come into play. Both of these apps can act as a 'front-end' for Photoshop - after all, they're the Managers. But in truth, if you're using Lightroom then you very likely do not need Photoshop at all, and for anything that does require layers you can use one of the many - much less expensive - alternatives. But I think the common experience is that with Lightroom (like Aperture) the requirement for the sledgehammer that is Photoshop really fades away.
So pick one horse and ride it. Choose between LR and iPhoto. Use it like it's intended. Don't get involved in other necessary apps. Don't review before bringing the photo into the manager - that's what the manager is for.

  • How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one

Last Friday apparently one of my raid drives started failing.
As I mentioned on this forum I started getting continous beeping.
I was finally able to get the raid working at a degraded level.  I ordered a replacement hard drive which is arriving today.
(In the meantime I made twice daily backups of my work.....)
Below was the message I got from the browser based raid software:

At one point when I did the checked the browser interface I saw the message Failed and Degraded
As I said, I was able to work over the weekend on the degraded system.
This morning I got the beeping again and did the rescue and now I am running a "full raid" without the notice that one raid was "Free".
In any case, the new hard drive is arriving today.
What steps should I take to incorporate the new drive into the raid system.
    I have one OS drive

    Harm,
    Regarding your comment:
Re: How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Please tell me how to read the serial number from an individual drive rather easily, without un-installing them:
If you select the proper drive to change out, you only need to remove one drive and look at its serial number...
Step 1: Identify bad drive serial number using Areca's tools
Step 2: Turn off the computer
Step 3: Remove what you think is the bad drive based on following your numbered cable method, marked hot-swap bays, whatever
Step 4: Verify that the serial number matches the "bad drive" serial number from step 1; if it does great, proceed; if it does not match, go back to step 3
Step 5: Change out the CORRECT drive - that's the bottom line for this whole procedure
    Cheers,
    Jim

Yes, as posted, to the user it's confusing  (and accessing your backups via the Finder is not recommended).
Time Machine knows which is which, and will back up each Mac to the proper folder.  When/if you want to use the "Star Wars" display to view or restore from either Mac's backups, it will show the backups for the Mac you're on.
