Does iTunes 11 change playlist or podcast options?*

Most of what I've read about the new iTunes, both complaints and praise, is about things that so far haven't mattered much to me--I primarily want to be sure that my existing playlists (some fairly complicated nested version) and podcast subscriptions aren't going to be screwed up.  Are the rules & options for setting up playlists changed in iTunes 11?   Do podcast subscriptions get screwed up with the change?

quote "I think Apple have taken a wrong turn with the new iTunes 11 update by removing some key features. Most concerning for this this writer is the removal of the user generated iMix ecosystem.  I am asking iTunes to bring back the iMix and I encourage you to do the same at their feedback page http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
I believe honest word of mouth  is the best recommendation and the iMix ecosystem contains plenty.  There are over zealous self promoters and fanatical fans in there  too but at least the content its real opinion and generated by real people.  Which is far better that the beefed “Listeners Also Bought” box which just looks like machine generated advertising to me."
I just sent them feedback I suggest everyone do so.

    welcome to the discussions
you may find that WMP is doing this for you.
There is a setting is WMP that means that it checks the info held in the file (and shown by itunes) against that held at Gracenote and 'updates' the info where there is any disagreement. On my copy its under the 'media library' tab.
Turn this off if its on.

  • HT5637 How does itunes match sync playlists?

How does itunes match sync playlists between my computer, ipad and ipod?

It will tell you that the library exceeds the limit and will not proceed. So if you have more than the 25k limit (and keep in mind that iTunes Store purchases do not count against this limit) the only way you can use iTM is to move some music out of the library to get under the limit before signing up for the service.

  • ITunes crashed - took playlists and podcast subs with it. How to restore?

My playlists I may be able to deal with having to restore manually, but my podcast subscriptions were also wiped, and I can't just bring them back on a whim. Are the subscriptions - and/or playlists - stored somewhere to be brought back, because I don't find it very viable to resubscribe every time iTunes runs into Random bug #41412.
The files are still available, obviously.
    Anyone?

You will then need to force the phone into recover mode (search Google).  All data on the phone will be lost.

  • Stop iTunes from changing playlists when I view a different tab?

This appears to be a new problem for me. Say for instance I'm listening to a particular artist but I decide I wan't to switch over to my iPhone tab. If the song happens to end while I'm on that tab, and I'm not looking at the artist anymore, it will switch to another artist at random. I can't figure out the pattern, I'm not on shuffle, and I typically tell iTunes to "repeat all." Any help is greatly appreciated.
    iTunes version 11.1.3

    Hi!
Thanks for replying. I have refused to give up on my quest to get iTunes to remember my settings. I have done some googling and have found posts from Mac users who have created an "Alias" to redirect iTunes to the appropriate folder when the settings default the Music Location back to the original location (This of course does not help us Windows users). I have also found some info which suggests changing the file permissions for the default location might cause iTunes to give an error message rather than begin writing songs to the improper directory. I have not found success with either method but I feel maybe I am on the right track. It is clear there is no solution built into iTunes but perhaps there is a third party solution or workaround for us stubborn folk who refuse to admit the software will not do what we want it to...

  • How long does iTunes updates changes made in Libsyn?

I have changed the website address of our Podcast Show in iTunes last 2 days ago, but up until now, I cannot see the changes made yet. It still redirects the page to our default podcast webpage. Please help. Thank you.

I blocked it to keep it out of their directory when I was uploading the backlog of episodes - I didn't realise it was the same setting at the time.
I just checked the feedburner feed again - it is <itunes:block>no</itunes:block> on it.

there is the itunes link (from the notification e-mail) and the feedburner link just incase there is something else wrong meaning it isn't being updated.

  • Where does itunes store my playlists on my pc,I can locate my itunes media which contains all the albums and artists but not my playlists?

Im a bit of a tech dummy and am trying to add a playlist to an iphone that is NOT synced with my itunes account, with ipod/ipad this is simple as I can manually manage content, however this feature doesn't work on iphone. I have a program installed which allows me to add to the iphone however I need to add directly from the itunes folder not within itunes. I have created a playlist in itunes to add to this device however I can not locate this folder in my itunes files!! I'm sure I am missing something simple here

iTunes playlists are stored within the library database iTunes Library.itl. Perhaps you need to create a m3u playlist for use with your other software. Right-click on the playlist name in the sidebar for export options.
Or use iTunes to manage the content on the device in the way that it is designed to.

  • How long does itunes take to review a podcast...?

I setup an rss feed for podcasting on ourmedia.org, my files are stashed over on internet archive and my rss feed seems ok yet apple has not posted the files to podcast directory and its been almost two weeks. Any ideas?

I heard it takes 2 - 3 weeks. Did they get back to you? If so...how long did it take. My show is on iTunes...I can download it, but I can't find it in their listings when I search for it. Any idea why I can't find it?

  • Why does iTunes always change my place on the audio book I'm listening to?

It strarted by restarting the audio book everytime I opened iTunes, and now it just keeps going back to 5:24:32 for no reason, even if I just open my phone to check a text. This is incredibly agrivating, please help.

    Hi there Ritchiet,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • What ports does iTunes update podcasts over?

    Hiho
Lately I never succed in updating podcasts while using my 3G data ISP. I suspect they block ports. What ports does iTunes require to download new podcasts?
    /peter

    Hi Jan,
I am sure the Apple Doc is right.
The Doc was originally written for iChat 2 when you could only chat 1-1
Obviously with an eye on the future, and of the potential for the data traffic to get busy in some locations, allows for the extra ports allocation.
If you are in a 4 way Video chat then that would be 16 ports.
Now in iChat 2 Audio chats used to make use of the same four ports. But as 10 way Audio chats are possible it seems likely this has been changed in multichats to use all twenty ports.
    ( I am also sure that 16384-16403 is 20 ports )

  • IPod Shuffle does not play playlist of podcasts, instead separates them into unique lists by podcast

Very frustrating. In previous versions of the shuffle I was able to select to listen to all podcasts in a row automatically. Now I can't seem to figure it out, I tried creating a playlist as I do with music, however the shuffle is smart and figures they are podcasts so just enters them in as such. Then I go to play them and it separates them into different playlists depending on the podcasts.
Engineers: it wasn't broken to begin with so stop playing around with features and just create something usable... maybe it's too much to expect from Apple with Steve Jobs gone. A waste of $50 if you can't help me figure it out.

whether or not the genre has been "rebranded" to music
FYI - The way to "rebrand" an item to reclassify it as a different type of iTunes media is NOT with the Genre setting.  Instead, select the item in iTunes and do a Get Info.  In the Info window, go to the Options tab.  Change Media Kind to Music, Podcast, Audiobook, etc.  Changing the Genre setting does nothing to change how iTunes categorizes the item.
I loaded a couple Music playlists to see what would happen.
Playlists are playlists...   There in no distinction between a "Music" playlist and a "Podcast" playlist.  It's up to you do load them as desired.
If I actually wanted those music playlists to function as such, though, I'd be out of luck.
I don't understand.  Just load a playlist that only has podcasts on it (your "Podcast playlist"), AND one or more other playlists that only have music.  Then VoiceOver will read then off separately, and you can choose the one you want to hear.  If you take a look at the artcle I linked previously
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4322
where is says Changing playlists and To choose an item from the playlist menu, your description basically matches what it says there.  So, glad to hear your shuffle is working as designed...

  • ITunes 7.1 breaks smart playlists for podcasts

All previous podcast-supporting versions of iTunes built smart playlists that reflected the order of the files in the RSS feed... but not iTunes 7.1! Its smart playlist order reflects the order the files were added to the iTunes library.
You know how iTunes downloads multiple episodes in newest-to-oldest order? Well, that's how they show up in a smart playlist now.
And no, it's not a problem of sort order. I have tried every option related to sorting by name, artist, and album - nothing makes a difference.
So, in one of my podcasts (a radio feed recorded from 13:00 to 16:00 Monday-Friday), I now have:
    - CH0703151335
    - CH0703151306
    - CH0703151435
    - CH0703151406
    - CH0703151506
    - CH0703151535
    - CH0703161306
    - CH0703161406
    - CH0703161335
    - CH0703161535
    - CH0703161506
    - CH0703161435
Those are dates & times (2007-03-15, 13:06, for example), and of course the files are in correct date/time order in the feed. You might be able to guess how I figured out what it's doing. (If you didn't figure it out, here's the story: I updated the podcast while the episodes were being recorded.)
If you have seen this, did you figure out a way around it? Thanks! So far, I haven't, and it's really annoying. As I said, this is new in iTunes 7.1, and it persists in 7.1.1.

After more tinkering, I have figured out what's going on here, and I think there's a bug here.
For all of the podcasts I mentioned, the "Sort Name" is identical. In the case that the "Sort Name" is identical, I would think that the "Name" field would be used when sorting by name. Instead of sorting on name, however, iTunes is sorting on the date the file was introduced into the iTunes library. That seems to me to be a bug.
I have made a change to see if I can empty the "Sort Name" field, to see what that will do. Hopefully that will sort correctly.

  • ITunes updates songs, playlists, etc., but will not update iPod options

When I plug in my iPod (4G, 40GB), everything syncs as it should --songs, playlists, podcasts, etc. The same is true when I manually choose to update the pod. (i.e. from a context menu or somewhere else in the UI) However, I am unable to change any of the options for the iPod. This includes renaming, choosing disk access, etc.
When I attempt to make these changes from the "Preferences" dialog, iTunes will say "Updating iPod," etc. but while the changes appear in iTunes, they are not actually made on the iPod itself.
A similar situation occurs when renaming the iPod. Same as before, iTunes "goes through the motions" but doesn't actually change. The difference is that after the iPod is renamed, it will no longer update until the iPod is ejected and reconnected. iTunes gives an error message saying: "The iPod '[New Name]' cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." The name listed in the iPod's About menu is still the old name.

iPod freezing up can sometimes indicate a hard drive failure. To determine this, follow these steps:
Press menu + select until the apple logo appears.
With the apple logo still on the screen, press and hold select + rewind. You will soon see a screen that says "IRAM PASS HIT PLAY CONTINUE".
    Press play/pause.
Using the forward button, navigate to "HDD SCAN" and select it.
Connect your iPod to the wall adapter.
Allow sufficient time for the scan to complete, it can take a couple of hours. Results such as a "HDD PASS" that appears in seconds or a minute or two, "SCAN NG" or "RD FAIL" indicate the iPod's hard drive is pooched and the unit will have to be replaced.
Freezing during sync can also happen if the ports are not high powered USB 2.0.
