Does iTunes alter files when normalizing?

Hi folks. I'm trying ot find out if iTunes alters my music files when I choose to use "Sound Check" in my preferences. Thanks.

It doesn't alter the sound data itself, but adds extra metadata to the tags. You can verify this by looking at the tags in another application such as foobar2000.

  • Does iTunes normalize audio when converting to AAC?

Most of my mp3s are not normalized. I want to normalize these tracks before converting them to AAC. Does iTunes normalize audio when converting to AAC? Or do i need to normalize my mp3s first, then convert them to AAC? Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by "normalize"? Do you mean leveling the volume?
iTunes uses the soundcheck feature to do this. It doesn't automatically happen when you convert a song to a different file type.
Apply it in iTunes using the edit/preferences/playback menu (Windows).
Turn it on on the iPod using the settings/soundcheck/on menu.
After applying it in iTunes, sync your iPod to reflect the changes made.
There are 3rd party programs that do this more effectively (at least in my opinion).
    For Windows there is mp3Gain/aacGain.

  • Does iTunes sync metadata when syncing photos to an iPad/iPhone? I am using Aperture v3 as my photo library.

Does iTunes sync metadata when syncing photos to an iPad/iPhone? I am using Aperture v3 as my photo library.

This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.

  • Why does iTunes rename files that are imported automatically although I set it not to?

    Hello,
I am facing the following issue:
I set up an old MacBook as a HomeServer. Now I would like to use it as a media server as well using iTunes.
My problem now is, that everytime I put some music files in the folder which automatically adds them to iTunes they are moved to the Music folder and are renamed although I deactivated this option in iTunes.
I arranged myself with the fact that the music is moved but the renaming is frustrating since I would like to use a sync tool to manage my music.
Does anyone have an idea how I could solve this?
    Thanks in advance.

I can tell you exactly why I don't want iTunes to manage my music completely.
I have all my music/fotos stored on a SD card so I have access to it anywhere I need it. I have a sync tool backing up my files to a NAS at my house.
My first intend was to access the music stored on my NAS but then I would have to manage iTunes twice (on my MacBook for traveling and on my HomeServer).
So I was looking for a comfortable way to have iTunes running on my HomeServer with a folder where I can put my new music. OK now you could say "why not just copy your new stuff there and let it do its job?". I want to have it automated or at least semi automated.
I store everything on my SD card and when I'm at home I want 2 sync jobs running. One to back up all of it and the other one to check which files are new and then put them into the folder which automatically adds them to itunes.
I could still live with iTunes managing everything the way it does but then I need to know how I can find out what is new in my music library on my SD card without manually checking it or creating duplicates in iTunes.
Wow... that was more text then I intended to write... whoops... hope I will be able to find a solution somehow.
    Cheers

  • Question regarding the itunes library files when moving itunes library from 1 hard drive to another.

My itunes library had out grown my 2TB drive (I'm a bit of a podcast addict) so I got a 4TB drive to replace it but for some reason my Mac Pro started to act up and eventually apps became crippled to where they would not open.
So I had no choice but to go back to my 2TB drive for my boot drive for now but my itunes library is now slightly larger than the 2TB drive and won't fit so with my previous 4TB drive connected via a hard drive dock I followed the instructions to move my itunes library to a secondary 4TB drive in my mac pro and that went fine the one thing I noticed is in the article it says not to move the 2 library files but now my itunes media is on a internal drive and the 2 library files are on the hard drive connected to my mac pro via the dock so if I was to remove the drive from the dock the 2 library files would no longer be accessable and my itunes library would not be able to be found even though the media in on one of my internal drives.
Anyone know how I can rectify this issue?

  • Why does Itunes always crash when exiting?

I have 10.5 installed on Windows 7 64 bit. Almost everytime I exit itunes it crashes and I have to constantly go to the task manager to close it.
I've tried reinstalling but it doesn't seem to be helping. Help plz?

I have read the using itunes in safe mode (pressing CTRL+SHIFT when you open it) helps the problem, although this is not a long term solution. If using itunes in safe mode does stop the problem, then there must be a 3rd party application that is causing the crash. I have turned off all non essential start up programs (through MSCONFIG) to see if that also helps, but haven't had the chance to test it out properly yet. I will let you know how I get on.

  • Why does itunes automatically close when I try and listen to a podcast?

When I click iTunes and then click on podcast it automatically closes iTunes.  I can listen to my music but podcast won't play.  why is this and how do i fix it?

If it's just a single podcast that's doing this it may be corrupt.  If that's the case delete it and try re-downlading it.  If it's all podcasts then you may need to restore your phone.  Follow this guide to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414, being sure to back up your phone at step 6 (you will be able to restore your phone to this backup at the end of the process).

  • Why does iTunes sort files on the hard drive differently to on the iPod?

Hey guys! im using itunes 8.2 and my new iPod classic 120GB.
I updated all my music in iTunes so that it is now perfectly organised on my iPod. The ipod appears to organise its artists using the "artist" field not the "album artist". because of this i decided to use "artist" like the album artist and "album artist" like the usual artist field so that i still had the names of some of the featuring artists etc (example: i have a song by Air featuring Beth Hirsh. normally this would have "artist" = Air feat. Beth Hirsh and "album artist" = Air. but as the ipod organises the other way around I swapped them over.) This all went fine and my iPod is perfect, as is the itunes library itself as i just sort by "artist" and it keeps everything as i like it.
As I had managed to get that in order I thought I would then let iTunes organise the music on my hard drive. Frustratingly iTunes then decided to organise everything on the hard drive by "album artist"! which means i've got 2 folders for my Air album one under Air and one under Air feat. Beth Hirsh.
Basically what im asking (after all that waffle) is 1) why is it different and 2) can i change it?
if there is a way of changing it (which im sceptical of considering apple tend to tell you whats best and then have done with it, as they are more often than not right!) then im assuming there is more chance of changing itunes than the ipod.
Any help will be much appreciated!
    thanks Andy

The problem you've run across has been inherent in iTunes & iPod software for quite some time - I suspect they don't consider it an issue or it would have been addressed by now. See my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for suggested workarounds for this and other organisational issues, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • Sender File Adapter does not get files when there is a large number ( 300)

We are on XI 7.0 (SAPKB70015)
We have an issue picking up a large number of files from a particular server. We are trying to pickup the files based on a wildcard e.g. test
    - we can retreive up to 200 files from the same server (using the same config) no problem
    - we can pull lots of files (>3000) files from other servers (using the same config) no problem
    - we can write an mget command (mget test) to reteive the files no problem
So the only issue is retrieving a large number of files from a parfticular server. We see no errors in the RWB.
To get this sorted out we need to find the exact commmands that XI executes to attempt to retrieve the files. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to find this.
    Thanks
    Richard

It turned out that this was caused by a limitation on the ftp server.
The file adapter uses the dir command to get a listing of the files matching a specific mask. The dir command does not return any files if there are a large number (the ls command works fine but the file adapter uses dir instead of ls).
sap told me that 'According to this FTP server is no compliant with RFC 959 and that is
why DIR command returns an error.'
We were able to get this resolved by applying a patch on the ftp server.
    Thanks

  • Why does iTunes quit unexpectedly when I try to play music

This happened after I recently plugged in my iPhone 4 and was waiting for an upgrade to instal.  Now I can't get iTunes to play music.  It just quits each time.

I don't know why it happens, but if you read messages around the iMovie Discussion Group it seems to happen to a lot of people. The easiest way around this is to Share to Media Browser instead of Share to iDVD directly. The Media Browser is a 'holding area' for video you want to use in other iLife Apps (including GarageBand and iDVD). When you Share to Media Browser, choose the Large size. Then let it run until it finishes. Quit iMovie.
Open iDVD. Create a New Project, Select a Theme. Then click on the Media Button. Click on the Movies button below the Media Browser. Your project will now appear under the iMovie star icon just drag that project into the iDVD project window. This should bypass the problem you were having by sharing Directly to iDVD.

  • Why does iTunes stop working when I click on the menu bar?

Whenever I click the grey menu bar (artists, genre, videos, playlists, match, etc) iTunes stops working and Windows has a pop up that says it's closing. I tried updating to 11.4... but then itunes says it is missing a file or something like that and will not open period so I have to use a system restore to get it back..I;ve been enduring this without editng playlists and etc for a few months now. Please help? Thank you for any input.

this is for the benefit of putting video effects on my iMovie projects, which I cannot import videos for my video app

  • Why does iTunes stop working when I try to type the album name in to submit cd track names?

I have a cd that I'm trying to separate, but whenever I try to type the album name in the submit CD track names box, iTunes freezes, then quits working. Why is it doing this and what can I do to stop it?

Does it happen for any slideshow? Or only for one slideshow with certain images?
Does iPhoto also freeze for a new iPhoto library, if you create a new library with some test images?
If iPhoto only freezes for a certain slideshow, check, if it is one of the photos or videos, that is making the slideshow freeze. Create a new slideshow and add the images one by one, to fnd the one, that cannot be played. Remove it.
If iPhoto only freezes with all slideshows in your current library, repair your iPhoto library. It may have been migrated with permission issues. How did you restore the library, after you wiped your mac and clean-installed?
To repair the library using the First Aid Tools, see Old Toad's post here: Rebuild iPhoto Library, Version 11, see "Fix 1". In your case, I'd start with Repair Permission, the Repair database. Apply the other fixes, if need be.
Post back, if the repair does not help.

  • Does iPhoto alter images when importing from camera ?(+ tip for slideshow)

I came across the following article:
    http://www.andrewburke.orconhosting.net.nz/mac/builtin.htm#photo
The claim here is that during import iPhoto alters images in some way. The iPhoto experts, Terence OldToad, LarryHN and others, could you please comment, what's your opinions on this ?
    Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows
If you are running a slideshow in either Preview or iPhoto, you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine.
When I import images from my Nikon to the Mac, I keep them outside of iPhoto and at their original size, as an archive from which I might eventually produce some prints. From there I choose the best examples that I want to display onscreen and copy those out of the archive for processing. Each one of those favorites that I've chosen is then tweaked in an image editor (I use Gimp Shop) and the final step before sharpening is to resize it down to match the dimensions of my display.
My iMac is 1440 by 900, so if an image is narrower than that ratio I scale it so the height is exactly 900; if it's wider I scale it so the width is exactly 1440. After these tweaked and resized images are finished I import only those into iPhoto. Then when I run a slideshow they are displayed exactly at their original size (not stretched or shrunk to fit the screen) and the difference is stunning.

What he says is +"you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine."+
The title of the piece is +"Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows".+ He is talking about you resizing photos before you import so they will match the screen size during the display of a slide show on the screen - not iPhoto changing anything during the import of the photo but during the display of it - This is a bit like the cropping during printing questions - if you want to control exactly have is being shown (or printed) rather than use a generalized scheme to make photos fit a non native size then you much do the changes yourself
I'm sure that he is correct but since I use iPhoto as a photo library manager which lets me show quick and easy slideshows, I have no problem - *my original, unaltered photos are there in iPhoto* and available for use as I see fit - the degree of modification that takes place in the display of a slideshow has never even been noticeable to me - but then I do not see iPhoto as a single purpose slide show viewer - in fact that is a very minor feature for me
