Does January 2008 Mac Pro boot into 64bit?

Hello,
Although it says here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770 that early 2008 Mac Pro can boot into 64bit, though not by default with Snow Leopard, I'm wondering if my January 2008 quad 2.66 model is just too early?
Machine Profile (Micromat) shows 'processor bitrate 64 bit, EFI bitrate 32 bit, Kernel bitrate 32 bit'.   So should I give up on the '64 bit kernel and extensions' option for this machine?
Thanks...BC

I just thought I would share my Mac Pro 1.1 experience. I recently had to replace a failed memory riser card  by buying a pair from ebay (they both failed a month apart) and took advantage of the opportunity to replace my Mac Pro 2006 with the 2008 model for $700 and inserted my drives and upgraded to 10.8.5. Just holding off on Mavericks for now...  Bought a Radeon 5770 and graphics are just peachy (i'm not a gamer). Then I put a samsung ssd 512gb in as the system drive and a 3tb for data so that machine is going fine
What to do with the 2006 Mac Pro?. No one wants it on ebay so I thought i'd try it on Windows. Windows 32bit loads via boot camp once you figure out how to  recognise the sata bus (depends on your windows 7 dvd version i think) but under 32 bit you only get 2gb usable ram ! something , not just video is addressing 2gb so that *****. You cannot boot off the 64bit dvd (try it) so i installed 64bit windows 7 on a clean drive on my core2dou pc then put the drive in my 4core xeon mac pro. It booted fine and installed alot of drivers for the xeons automatically. Then I got some drivers from 64bit bootcamp and sound drivers from the realtek website. Then , I upgraded to 64 bit windows 8 pro and everything still works. Then, I downloaded the free windows 8.1 pro update and everything still works..... As PCs go, this is still a pretty fast machine, and gives little away to , say an i5 or i7. If you put in an SSD and gamers video card it  would fly, but i dont need that....

  • Lion will not install on a January 2008 Mac Pro (3.1)

I have a January 2008 Mac Pro (version 3.1) and I'm trying to install Lion on one of the hard drives in the main chassis. It has consistently failed.
    I have tried:
    Reseating memory
    Reseathing hard drives
    Zap PRAM
    Reset SMC
Downloaded 4 fresh copies of Lion from the App Store
    Install from the installer file
Install from a DVD made with InstallESD.DMG
    Yet, it fails consistently.
I have 5 log files I'm willing to share, but they almost always look like this one. Some of them fail on different pkg's, but in general, this one seems to be the most regular failure. It's like the filesystem just dies in the middle of the install.
Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

    I figured out the problem.
This is going to sound a little crazy, but I've spent a lot of time on this one.
There's some kind of incompatibility with Lion and Seagate ST31000340AS drives. I was trying to install Lion on these drives and it would consistently fail. I've also tried to use these drives in a RAID volume. No go. I tried three different drives of this model. All of them failed.
I tried to install Lion on a Seagate ST31000528AS and it worked first time and sings beautifully.

  • First generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery, any idea why?

    Hi,
My first generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery when I restared after installing Autodesk sketchbook pro. This isnt the first time this has happened but last time I was not trying to install any software. Fortunatly, I have time machine backups and therefore have managed to recover the HD to a recent date and I intend to do a complete system check when it has finished. The first time this happened I didnt think much of it but now it has happened a second time i'm becoming a little concerned, any idea why this has happened?

I did this the first time it happened so I know that its not that i have the wrong startup disk selected. However, after the recovery had completed I tried the installation again and this time everything went smootly. so as of right now I dont have a problem. Thank you very much for your time and help.

  • How do I fix my early 2008 mac pro boot hard disk. Lost everything when it crashed hard, can not reinstal via cd/dvd drive... are there any fix get it boot from dvd drive?

I have an early 2008 MAC PRO Quad Core 3.0ghz processor. 8 Gig of rams, with a 1 Gig memory  Radeon 5770 HD Graphic Card running the latest Version of Snow Leopard OS.  Last week lighting struck the house take out all of my hard drives (4) thank god the surge protector mitigated the mother board from damaged, use the Parted Magic to check out the motherboard and it intact with no damage. I can boot with the Parted-magic and be able surf and post this question to this forums. I replaced a newly formatted hard  drive and trying to installed OS X Mountain Lions to the new drive, but unable to have it boot in my MAC PRO DVD, I get the usual chimes during the booting processed but the screen remain blackout, but able to boot with Parted-Magic to surf the web and access Apple sites/forums.
I am not well verse in using the Parted_Magic to repair or get my-mac to boot normally so I can reinstall OS X. Any help would appreciated.
    Thank you

Go to System Profile and look, does it say "MacPro3,1"?
    That is 2008.
FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?
You can but take a hit in performance.
    Sounds like MacPro1,1.
Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM)
In 2007 March an 8-core 3GHz did come out 2,1.
    So just to be clear.

It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro boot issue

I'm having what seems to be a hardware issue with my Mac Pro on booting. The MP boots to either a blue screen or a chunked grey screen (http://gallery.me.com/dwphoto#100036/IMG_1401) and hang. So far, I've tried booting from multiple clones (from 10.5-10.6.6) as well as the Snow Leopard install DVD, reinstalling SL, removed all 3rd party cards and usb/firewire externals, zapped the PRAM, repaired permissions, verified disks. It will boot into Safe Mode without problem. If it hangs on normal boot, all the drives are visible and active over a network. I'm pretty stumped.

They were reluctant? I hope you printed out the Apple article. Unbelievable.
What I would like would be a link at the top of this forum and more direct access (and we all want better organized and search results to KB articles).
There ought to be "newest changes KB" and a Warranty category

  • How to speed up early (January) 2008 Mac Pro

    Hello,
Have just bought a s/hand Mac Pro whch I would like to speed up a little.   I have 8Gb RAM installed and can go to 16Gb, and could possibly replace my boot drive with SSd.
Can anyone tell me which is the better speed investment for using programmes like iMovie and PhotoShop? (not intensively, but regularly).
I have read in a couple of places that SSd's favour 'read' over 'write' so wondered whether heavy writing programmes like PhotoShop would not fare well on such a drive?
    Thanks..BC

There is only one way to make the computer truly run faster - faster CPUs and faster GPUs. SSDs only improve the speed of data I/O. If you don't do a lot, then SSDs only help with the speed of launching applications.
More RAM doesn't make the computer faster it only enables the computers to run more applications concurrently or help applications that are very dependent on the use of physical RAM. See:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Mac Pro boots into Vista upon startup, not OS X?

    Hi,
I installed Windows Vista on a second hard drive on my Mac Pro but for some reason it insisits on booting into windows every time i start or restart my Mac? Tried setting the startup disk to OS X but it still boots into Vista! I have to hold down the alt key to select which one to boot into. Is there a way i can fix this or at least force it to come up with the OS options by default rather than holding the alt key?
    Thanks.

    Zap PRAM/NVRAM uses P + R along with CMD + OPT
If those NTFS drivers mean nothing, means you haven't installed either.
They allow OS X to write to NTFS.
And you have Boot Camp 2.1 installed.

  • Why does my intel Mac Pro boot with multiple 'good' boot tones?

My 8-core Xeon Mac Pro, running Snow Leopard, has an 'odd' behavior.  Every time it boots, I hear the initial successful boot tone, followed by a delayed series of 4 quieter, abbreviated but similar boot tones.  The machine boots normally and operates normally that I can tell.

The following apple doc refers to multiple boot beeps
Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2
But what is confusing is your description about when the beeps occur, i.e, after the normal boot chime.  So that doc may be unrelated.
Try disconnecting all your periphials and see if the problem continues.
    Try smc reset too.
See if it occurs if you boot in safe mode.

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, which has re-booting problems. Also what does the spinning beach-ball indicate?

Hi, I have an early 2008 Mac Pro which has re-booting problems.
    Processor speed is: 2.8
    Memory: 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    2 x 28GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.
If there is anyone who has some answers to help me solve my problem, I would be most grateful.
    Robert

When you have the beachball activity, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Booting into 64bit mode with Mac Pro 2009

I am trying to boot into 64bit mode with a 2009 Mac Pro 2.93 Quad core machine. I tried holding down 6 and 4 when restarting but no luck, it staill says no in the profiler. Any ideas why?

If you'd like your Mac to always start up in 64 bit mode without having to hold down any keys, do this:
Here's the configuration file approach for always booting into 64-bit. This is the best way to make your Mac always start up 64 bit as the only thing necessary is to alter one line of a configuration file. You can do that by opening the Terminal and entering:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64'
To return to 32 bit mode, you would repeat the command but enter an empty string, which would just be the single quotes (where arch=x86_64 is) with nothing in between.
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' ''
These commands are all one line, they're just wrapping here.
If at any point you find you need to start up in 32 bit mode for a single use, just as you held down the 6 and 4 keys for 64 bit, you can hold down the 3 and 2 keys for a temporary change. No need to keep changing the config file over and over.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro Won't Boot

I have an early 2008 mac pro that will not boot. Power turns on, power LED turns solid, but no display ever comes up and it never chimes. I have tried swapping out RAM, hard drives, disconnecting all peripherals... any other suggestions? Dead logic board?
... and yes, I was too dumb to buy the AppleCare. Stupidest move I have ever made...

Hi I think I have a similar problem.
My Mac Pro 8 core doesn't start up. When I turn it on here's what it does: the boot up sound > the grey/white screen with the apple logo and the little turning gear thing > then it freezes.
Sometimes after that the screen either goes blue with nothing but a mouse pointer that's moveable. but no login window. I can access the hardrive by network and weird enough it's booting on safe mode. I tried setting the SMC firmware but it didn't work. I took it to an apple store and when they plugged it into their displays it worked. When I brought it back, I plugged it into my Cinema Display 30" and the same problem started again. I reset the SMC firmware again and tried different displays I have at home but had the same problem. I plugged the 30" display into a Macbook Pro and it worked fine so I know that the display is not the problem. I've heard the the Nvidia 7300GT has caused problems but why would it work in the apple store? Any help out there?

  • Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed

I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro.  That is the only OS install on my mac.  I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed.  When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot.  It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo).    As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again.  I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD.  The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's.  So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed.  It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
    Mountain Lion was clean installed.
Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
Any recommendations on what to try?

A HT does not find a lot of errors.
It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't  which is a shame, so...
Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month.

  • Early-2008 Mac Pro startup - sometimes it does, sometimes it don't.

I have an early-2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks. Having issues with start up - powering up is intermittent - sometimes it does, sometimes it don't. I have had some success by unplugging it overnight, and it boots up once plugged back in the AM. I have been able to restart and zap the PRAM; I have also changed the battery. Thoughts?

You could have a problem with file corruption or your hard drive is going south. I would try moving your system to another hard drive then set that drive as the startup. See if the problem is resolved.
You can also try reinstalling Mavericks:
    Reinstall Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro - Can't load Boot Camp drivers for Win 7 64

Trying to install Win 7 64 bit on my early 2008 Mac Pro.  I downloaded the Boot Camp drivers 4.0.4033 and installed them on a USB drive but, for some reason, when I try the install them during the process, I get a message that my hardware is not recognized.  Skipping the driver loading process, I am able to install Win 7 but when the system trys to restart to continue the install, I get a message "disk error, press any key to restart".  Pressing any key does not get me anywhere.  I went through the Win 7 repair process and again tried to load the drivers with no luck.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

That article was also my starting point and I have followed those steps again and again and again. I haven't slept, I haven't done anything other then try to make it work for more hours than I can count. I came here for help because that solution is not working for me.
The region and keyboard type settings simply don't have the Apple keyboard layout listed. As I said, someone on the Fusion forum tried to follow the article's instructions too and he managed to get it working because he COULD run setup.exe (Boot Camp Drivers) on his machine, and I CAN'T. Yes, it is all explained in that article... but the drivers WON'T INSTALL, I get an error message saying "This version of Boot Camp is not intended for this computer model".
First you said it wasn't physically possible for me to install the drivers, then you said I should just follow the article. Well, the article clearly says "Install the Boot Camp Windows device drivers in the virtual machine" which you just said couldn't be done! I want to cry. I should have just bought a second laptop, this is too painful.

  • Radeon 5770 in 2008 Mac Pro, won't boot - hangs at Apple logo screen??

Okay, so I had the Radeon 2600 XT and it kept giving me issues with pink & white checkerboards and freezing, then eventually wouldn't let me boot past the white/grey apple logo loading screen. Now, today I installed Apple Radeon 5770, just installed, got the MiniDisplay to DVI-D adapter and everything, but it STILL won't let me get past the white/grey apple screen! I can't seem to get the DVD drive to open either. Both of my hard drives have been working fine and I've even swapped slots and i still can't get past the white screen! What gives? I just dropped over $300 for this, so you can imagine my dismay and frustration. Can someone please help me with some ideas? Would be GREATLY appreciated.

    M

Yeah, ok thanks for the response about the screen! So, I don't have 10.6.5. I'm running 10.5.8, which the Radeon 5770 says it needs 10.6.5, but -finally- I got my computer to boot up with the 5770 in it, on 10.5. Al I did was hold OPTION+ Power button and it took me to a blue screen, then to my 500 GB new HD. I then switched over to my other username on Macintosh HD (drive that came with the MacPro) and OSX loads fine! I can tell that it still needs to be on 10.6.5, so I can download the drivers because the text is ever so slightly fuzzy, and the color isn't tuned well (too much contrast) and images take a little longer to load/ are a bit laggy. I'm just glad it's up and running! No more pink transparent checkerboards, and loud *** fan sounds! I am wondering though, what was causing this hold up? Is it only booting up because I have the 10.5.2 install disc in the SuperDrive? I almost don't want to take it out and try without it, after the trouble i've had, just in case lol.  I'd like to have an idea as to why, because I don't want to mask a problem, and have it eventually turn into a catastrophe.
