Does Journaled HFS harm SSD on MBA (2011) ?

Hi,
I got MBA 13 (2011) and Samsung SSD 256 Gb, Trim supported. My concern: does file system "Journaled HFC+" harm SSD over time and reduce its lifetime? Thanks.

Can I mark your answer as a correct one with confidence?

  • Wiping SSD MBA (2011)

I have managed to Migrate data to new computer & drive. I wish to wipe the 256Gb SSD drive, reinstall Lion & upgrade to ML. I have a Lion thumbdrive, but I am unable to boot from the thumbdrive although it appears in Preferences/Startup Drive along with the internal SSD.
I tried putting the MBA into Target disk mode, but a MBA (2013) with ML does not see the disk, either on the desktop, as a device or using Disk Utility. Network reports the Thunderbolt connection as green.
I've paid for a copy of ML for a MBA (2011), but the installer shell never shows up on the desktop with an application that can be moved to a thumbdrive. I assume this is the "new, improved" Apple method of distributing software. Guess I can't wait for Mavericks!
Suggested methods to employ to achieve my goal could be??
    Thanks.

    Execute SMC and NVRAM resets:

  • Frequent issues with supplied SSD in 17" 2011 MBP

    Hi all,
    Perhaps someone can help?
I've recently (in the last couple of months) been having problems with the SSD in my early-2011 17" MBP. The model of the SSD (from System Profiler) is APPLE SSD TS256C.
The problems eems to occur after emptying the Trash when it has files of large sizes in it (video files of 1 or more GB typically). I empty the Trash, and the available space showing for the drive gets bigger,a s expected, but then when I try to make use of the drive (for example by copying files from another drive to it) I am told there isn't enough free space (when there clearly ought to be).
    Example from earlier today:
    I had 60GB available.
I put around 30 GB of stuff in the Trash and emptied it.
Available space now shows 90GB free.
I try to copy 75GB from an external drive onto the SSD, but am told there isn't enough free space.
In a attempt to fix the problem, I did what I have done on the 3 previous occassions: Restart the computer, hold down Cmd+R and run Disk Utility from there. Here I can repair the SSD (as it has the OS on).
This is what Disk Utility showed me:
    Verifying volume “Hard Drive”
    Checking file systemPerforming live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file Hospital Records - 100k YouTube Subscribers.mov
(It should be 11029 instead of 144729)
Incorrect block count for file Netsky Live - Backstage at the Electric Brixton.mov
(It should be 12062 instead of 606074)
Incorrect block count for file Netsky Live - Lotto Arena 2013 Promo.mov
(It should be 7177 instead of 135443)
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 11712443 instead of 10811938)
The volume Hard Drive was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran it a couple of times (as on previous occasions) until no errors were reported.
On previous occassions, upon restarting, things went back to normal, but this time I am still being told there is not enough free space, though Get Info shows 121GB available.
    So I have some questions:
    What is going on?
    Why does this keep happening?
What can I do to solve my current issue?
What can I do to stop this from happeneing again?
    Many thanks in advance...

I'd totally forgotten about this until I got a notification that you had replied.
I no longer have this problem.vaguely remember calling up Crucial (who make my second SSD) and they said something about leaving the machine on, but not doing anything on it for 24 hours or something. So it has to stay switched on, not go to sleep (dim your screen though) and don't touch your keyboard or mouse for a full 24 hours... maybe it was a bit longer... maybe it had to be at the login screen (can't remember)... and in this time it will run some automatic repair thing.
It was so long ago I really can't remember the spcifics - but have a hunt around for things to that effect. Or call Apple/Crucial and mention what I've just said, see if it makes any sense to them and get them to advise the exact corect procedure.

I have a MBP mid 2010, and after installing Maverics, the following apps will not launch, as in "not responding" when i try to launch them.
    Maps
    Photo Booth
    Apple Script Editor

    Grapher
Also struggling with streaming sites like Netflix, extremely slow launch the video (No network issues, tried on different network).
The problem isnt percistant, occasionally the programs will launch and work.
I have tried re-installing OSX. I sent the machine to apple service, where they told me my hdd was defective. So i bought a new SSD harddrive and installed Mavericks and i still have the same problem.
Does it sound like a hardware or a software problem?

Outlook acts as if I am pressing a dummy button.

    Hi friends,
    I have the same problem.
    Mountain Lion + Office 2011 + Safari 6.1.2 (8537.74.9)
It is not clear to me what is the relation between Safari and this problem.
I have Chrome installed as well and it is set as default browser. Is this involved?
If yes how can I solve the problem?
    Please let me know.
    Many thanks.

  • Su command won't work in MBA 2011 Lion 10.7.1

    Hi All,
I have an iMac, 3 MBPs running Lion and Snow Leopard. In all of them, su command works just fine and of course I had no issues with them for many years.
I just bought a MBA 2011 and it came with Lion 10.7 which I updated to 10.7.1. The su command just simply refuses to work. It display 'su: sorry' as if I typed the wrong password.
    1) I tried my own account password which is an administrator. Didn't work
    2) Enable root account and set the password. Didn't work (I checked in my all other machine, don't need to enable root as the 'enable root' is still avaialable where as if it has been enabled only 'disable root' option will be displayed
    3) Created another account (admin) also didn't work.
    What did I miss here?

    On the logs:
2:36:25 AM su: BAD SU (username) to root on /dev/ttys000
Just reformat my system and restore with fresh un-updated stock Lion, still the same issue.

  • Can I use MBA 2009 power cable on MBA 2011

I have a new MBA 2011 and i still have 2 power adaptors for my old MBA 2009.  Can I use the old adapters on my new MBA?

    Acording to Apple you shouldn't:
Note: Adapters that shipped with the MacBook Air (Original), MacBook Air (Late 2008), and MacBook Air (Mid 2009) are not recommended for use with MacBook Air (Late 2010) models. When possible, use your computer's original adapter or a newer adapter.

  • I want to use asus air charger to charge my ipad 4 with my computer. does this software harm my ipad battery?

Hi , I want to use asus air charger to charge my ipad 4 with my computer. does this software harm my ipad battery? can I use it? thanks

Look at this description and review. http://asus-ai-charger.en.softonic.com/
The app is free, So it won't cost to try. The iPad 4 comes with a 12W wall charger. Most computer USB ports output only 2.5W, so even if you get a 50% increase, it will still take a long time to charge your iPad.
Bottom line - Use the wall charger.
    Here's some battery/charging info.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Can i leave my power adaptor plug in to mba 2011 after fully charging it?

    Hi all,
I was wondering whether i can leave my power adaptor plug in to my mba 2011 even after its gully charged?
    Appreciate all feedbacks!

Yep!  No problem with that.  I would cycle the battery once a month or so (lt the battery completely drain then fully re-charge).
I love my 11" MacBook Air!

How come the swedish word "pappaledig" (paternity leave) doesn´t exist in my iPhone 4S swedish dictionary but "mammaledig" does? This phone was made in 2011!

    I've fixed my own problem.
In the end, the issue was with iMessage on the other phone, not mine.
While I had it connected to iTunes (the other phone, not mine), I could see that iTunes thought it was the temporary number (07429...). I turned iMessage off and back on again and the phone number in iTunes changed to the old (i.e correct) number (07903...).
Subsequently, texts from my phone to the other phone showed up as blue-bubbled iMessages.
    Hope this helps someone!
Thanks for reading, if you did.

  • OpenGL: Is it supported with MBA 2011? (E.g. Runescape.)

Runescape, a game with OpenGL graphics option fails to load properly on my MBA 2011.
    (blacked out environment and graphics)
My guess is the Intel HD3000 doesn't support it properly. Any idea?

What you want is a custom data formatter. I would give you some links, but my iPad wants to convert them into the documentation viewer.
You aren't going to find much help with C++ debugging. While Apple's Clang has made great improvements in C++ support compared to GCC, C++ is really not something that Mac or iOS programmers typically use. The Cocoa containers and objects are so much more versatile. You kind of have to have a masochist streak and a 7 year development schedule to use C++. C++ is experiencing a bit of a resurgence, especially in defense markets. For a long time, compilers had such poor support for C++ that it just wasn't possible. After simplifying the language a little, compilers can now compile and link C++. Consultants have realized they can provide C++ services and burn though billable hours better than any other language on the market. Independent developer, however, don't have those schedules and budgets so they tend to use NSArray. Xcode supports it better in the debugg and, chances are, you don't need to debug it anyway. There are a number of matrix classes built on Cocoa.

  • Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive -  there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

  • MBA 2011 keeps asking to restart

    Hi
My MBA 2011 keeps asking to restart. I have done this so many times and it keeps asking me at the log in page.
    Can anyone help?

If you're getting the restart screen that has several languages on it, that's a kernel panic. A kernel panic is usually, but not always, caused by a hardware issue, with memory the leading cause.  Since your MBA is a 2011 model, it's under warranty, so I'd take it to an Apple store for support.
