I doubt you could boot from USB flash disk
As I remember the older notebook series support the booting from HDD, ODD, LAN and USB FDD drive (diskette). The booting from USB flash disk is not supported.

How to boot from USB flash drive - Portege R500

Hi,
I have a Portege R500 running Windows XP, brought about 2 years ago, and recently contracted a worm virus that has infected some of the start up files as the minute I log in it logs out again, even in safe mode! Quickest way I can think of sorting it is to reformat it with the XP recovery disc and reinstall windows.
Problem!! The CD/DVD drive on the laptop stopped working a while ago, have tried pretty much everything in the thread on this site but had no luck.
So my plan was to boot from a USB flash drive and do it that way. However in the boot settings I only have the options of HDD / FDD / CD-ROM / LAN, neither of these will work. Does anyone know how to boot from USB flash drives?
Any help would be really appreciated

As far as I know it should be possible to boot from USB FDD
Im not sure if you would be able to boot from USB flash drive but its definitely worth a try
Generally you could try to press F12 button when notebook powers up.
Then a boot menu should appear on the display and you should see all bootable devices.
PS: As far as I know the USB booting was available in ToshibaHWSetup (Toshiba tool which changes the BIOS settings in windows OS.) Therefore I assume booting from USB should be possible.

Satellite U400-10j - How to boot from USB flash drive?

Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite U400-10j.
I have Ubuntu on my USB flash disk, I now want to boot from it.
I am unable to find the option in the BIOS to boot from the Usb flash drive.
Secondly I have noticed that the laptop also has a internal memory card reader.
Could I load Ubuntu onto it then boot from the memory stick as well?

I think its not able to boot from an USB stick on this notebook.
The best way is to use a CD. There you can boot from on this notebook and all other notebooks.
In the Internet are a lot of CD versions of Ubuntu and other Linux systems available.
And as Feliks said, its not able to boot from an SD card because this is not listed in the BIOS.

Unfortunately I don't have the KT4 board, but I could have a one.

presumably most modern mobos allow for booting from USB devices such as floppy drives and flash disks
why not download the manual from here http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_list.php?kind=1&CHIP=4&NAME=Socket%20A%20(AMD%20K7) and looking through the BIOS instructions? i think there should be.

How do you configure boot order on A500-o25 so that it boots from usb drive first.

Enter the Bios, pressing F2 on startup, go to the Boot menu and choose Usb drive as the first boot device (you navigate with F5 and F6 keys). Press F10, and ..Save and Exit menu ,, appears, press ok. That's all.
Note, on my satellite A500, I have to connect the Usb flash before to turn computer on, otherwise the usb flash drive doesn't appear in boot menu in Bios

Mine says it can boot flash drives in the BIOS and it is a boot option, etc. However every flash drive I've tried has failed to boot on mine (and they boot on other people's computers). I've actually come across a few motherboards like this.

MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) problem booting from USB flash drive

Hi, all!
I was wondering if someone can help me. I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 on my 320GB HDD that is connected to my MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) mobo (The CPU is a Core2Duo 6600 with 6GB of RAM). I created a bootable USB 8GB flash drive using Microsoft's "Windows 7 DVD USB Download Tool" and bootsect.exe (Needed to create a boot sector on the USB drive) from the MS store. I successfully tested the resulting bootable USB drive using freeware MobaLiveCD (Sorry, you'll have to Google "mobalivecd" since this forum doesn't seem to allow external links) running under Windows XP SP3 x86 (32bit). Under MobaLive's QEMU, Windows 7 setup loaded its files and produced an error message basically saying that it could not install Windows 7 x64 under an x86 OS (No surprise there since QEMU is emulating a 32bit processor - The point is that the bootable USB drive I created works).
I then went into my mobo's CMOS and under Advanced BIOS Features -> Boot Sequence -> 1st Boot Device, set the value to "USB-HDD" and rebooted my machine. The USB drive probably was not detected by the mobo under that setting because it proceeded to boot from my HDD which is the 2nd Boot Device. I repeated the same process using each one of the four USB ports in the rear of the mobo (I don't have the optional USB panel that the MSI users manual mentions) to no avail. I also tried setting the 1st Boot Device to "USB-FDD" and repeated the process for each USB port but the mobo still will not boot from the USB drive (It does not recognize it). When I set the 1st Boot Device to "USB-ZIP" and rebooted, the mobo hangs after "Verifying DMI Pool Data ..." which is no surprise since I am not using a USB ZIP drive but a USB flash drive. It appears that under that setting, it recognizes that there is a USB device attached but it is expecting a response (From a USB ZIP drive). I had no idea it would be this frustrating to boot from a USB flash drive! If anyone knows how to make this mobo boot from a USB flash drive, please let me know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not looking for a miracle. I'm just looking for a mobo that does what it is supposed to do: Allow me to boot from a USB flash drive (I don't think that is too much to ask for even from a board that was made in 2006)!

I see under their "Why FlashBoot" section that it "... does not shift to user the burden of choice between "USB-ZIP" and "USB-HDD" at format time and proper BIOS setup at boot time. ... and every USB disk is formatted in such way that it will work in every environment properly, regardless of current BIOS setting.", so I will give it a try and let you know about the results afterwards.

Booting from USB Flash Memory Card Reader on RS480M2-IL (Test Results)

I just completed testing my USB Flash Memory Card Reader (see profile) as a boot device and wanted to provide feedback to the Forum.
A UBS Flash card will show-up on the Advanced Bios Features menu, Hard Disk Boot Priority list, when a Flash card is physically present in a card slot. It showed as "USB-HDD0 : AFT PRO -8MX CF 0" with a 256MB Compact Flash (CF) card for my test. Using the enter key on the Hard Disk Boot Priority list allows for ordering priority, which was necessary to place the CF Drive before my real Hard Drive for the card to boot. When the card is removed, it drops from the list.
I initialized my CF card as a DOS system disk using HP's USB Disk Storage Format Tool v2.0.6 for the test.
Since it is recognized as a Hard Drive, it boots as the C: drive, not A/B Floppy alternative.
I also ran a quick test to see if XP Pro Setup would see the drive. It does show as my D: drive partitioned FAT. Too small (256MB) obviously for XP Pro install, but it does present opportunity for larger size flash modules. My Flash Reader actually has 4 different disk functions/slot groups, so XP Setup acknowledge the presents of those empty three slot groups as "Unknown Disk" on the drive list.
I hope the information is useful for anyone planning a build or looking for alternative boot methodolgy with the board.

Problems booting from USB flash drive w/ SL

I used disk utility to create a bootable USB stick and restored the SL DVD onto it, but for some reason when I try to boot from the USB it doesn't work. When I reboot I hold down 'Option' and I choose the USB drive, but then the system just sits there with the white screen with the Apple logo on it.
Any ideas?

Did you prep the flash drive properly:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" and I want to install Windows 8 on it. I use bootable USB stick, which I can boot fine from on my PC, so I assume it's not the USB stick that is a problem. First of all Bootcamp didn't recognise it. Fine, I partitioned the laptop's hard drive myself. Then while rebooting I held the Option key to manually select the USB drive, but it did not appear on the list. As someone suggested on the internet I even replugged USB stick to another slot during while on that screen, but it didn't help too.

You can install Windows from a USB drive in one of these Macs:
- MacBook Pro with Retina display.
- Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
- MacBook Air.
- iMac (Late 2012).
You don't have any of these computers, so you can't install Windows through a USB disk. Its firmware doesn't allow you to start up from your Windows installation disk.
You have to buy Windows 8 on a DVD. You need a System Builder version, which you can buy at Amazon or NewEgg. Follow Apple's steps to install Windows on the MacBook Pro > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

W541: Cannot boot from USB created with Windows 8 create recovery drive

Hello, I have just bought a W541, and want to install the supplied Windows 8 on an m.2 SSD.I created the recovery drive on a USB following the instructions in the User Manual, but the recover image procedure under Advanced Options cannot find the USB.During the re-image step, it fails to find a drive with a valid image.I've confirmed using the command window available under the Advanced Options that the USB is mounted Searching these forums, I found the following, which describes a similar problem for a T540:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-W-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-W540-won-t-boot-from-USB-flash-drive-ThinkPad/m-p/1500902#M39097 This implies that the USB should first be formatted with FAT32 before use, which cannot work, since FAT32 only has a maximum 4 GB partition, whereas when copied to the USB, the Windows 8 recovery drive occupies nearly 10 GB. I tried another USB drive, and created a recovery drive, as before.This time it was able to detect the presence of the drive when I tapped on the Enter key when starting up, followed by the F12 key. However, there are still problems when I clicked through the options:Choose the languageChoose your keyboard layoutTroubleshootAdvanced optionsSystem Image Recovery At this point I am offered the option Windows 8.1.When I select this, it indicates it is scanning for system disks, and then displays the the pop-up window "Re-image your computer": "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer" Why does this happen if it detected that there was a Windows 8.1 installation on the USB? I've spent a whole day now on this. Luckily, if I can't solve it, the machine is new and I can send it back to Lenovo, and ask to have it re-imaged with the downgrade option to Windows 7.

I'd expect the Ubuntu USB creator to make a functioning drive. Have you tried booting it on some other machine?
Hmmm, I don't think you said what machine this is. Lenovo laptop???
On some of the older machines a USB flash drive is seen as one of the hard drives, not as a USB device. You have to plug in the USB drive. boot to BIOS, change the boot order of the "hard drives" to put the USB flash at the top, then save and exit.
Then let it do a default boot of the new "hard drive" or hit F12 and select the "hard drive"
One other thought: when you hit F12 the way you are doing it now, is there a "+" or something next to the hard drive entry? Is it expandable, and if expanded does it show your flash drive?
[edit] D'oh! OP already said it's a T400.
I'm just guessing here. Need more information...
