Does leaving power connected when battery is 100% reduce its life

'They' on the internet reckon that a battery's life will be reduced once it is fully charged and external power is still connected. Does this still aplly to modern laptops?

Personally, I keep my power adapter plugged in most of the time. At least a couple times a week I use battery power to keep the battery juices flowing and hopefully prolong the life of the battery. If I'm not going to use my rMBP for several days, I shut it down and unplug it.

  • Leaving Charger IN When Battery is 100%

    Hello,
I have recently bought the New MacBook Pro. The mid-2010 Version. It is 13-inch.
Anyways, I have learned that it is best to use the battery by using the battery and then charging it when it is about 50% - 90% to full to best keep the juices flowing.
However, is it BAD or GOOD to leave the charger IN the laptop when the battery is ALREADY at 100%.
Such as sometimes I am at my desk with the MacBook Pro and the charger with the battery at 100%. And I just want to leave the charger in while using it. Will this have any negative impact on the battery? Is it best to unplug the charger as soon as it reaches 100%?
    Thanks in advance.

I don't give a crap about my MacBook Pro battery.

  • Dv 6809wm laptop. Computer still does not boot up when battery out and ac adapter plugged in?

dv 6809wm laptop. Computer still does not boot up when battery out and ac adapter plugged in?
It lights up initially for a split second when I push power button, but does not continue to boot up. When ac adaptor is put in it glows blue like it is supposed to. Any suggestions?

i'm going to try to see if a different ac adaptor will work hopefully that solves the issue.

  • Why does computer turn off when battery 40%?

Why does computer turn off when battery around 40%? I have tried replacing the battery.

Replacing as in "removed, re-installed", or "bought a new one"?
This is my display from "Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Power"
    "Normal" means no issues.
I will stop now in case you have actually put in a *new* battery ...

can i use my mac on power supply when battery is fully charged??

Keep the computer plugged in whenever possible.
If you keep the computer always plugged in, make sure that twice a month
run it on battery until battery level drops to about 50-40%.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

My iMac suddenly no longer connects to wifi network when in KIOSK (username) mode, and only connects when as ADMINISTRATOR mode. Its strange because the iMac has been working fine in KIOSK mode for over a year until 2 days ago.

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • Can I keep the power cord plugged in when battery reaches 100%l?

    Hello,
I'm assuming the battery stops recharging when it reaches 100%, right? In other words I can keep the power chord plugged in without any risk of "overcharging". Correct?
    Thanks.

Helpful, thanks. FYI, 2 Apple agents at Mac support have advised otherwise (said I have to remove the cord).
How bizarre....I have a 2.5 year old MacBook that gets great battery life (~4hrs) and begs to differ. Anyway, Thanks for the Star!

  • Macbook Pro 3.1 looses power completely when battery at 6..9%

I recently got a new battery for my 2007 Macbook Pro 3.1. Whenever I'm running on battery, the Macbook gives me a warning at 10% remaining battery life and loosed power all of a sudden when reaching 6..9%. All work is lost, when I reconnect the charger cable the Macbook restarts completely and doesn't just wake up from sleep.
    Questions:
    - How can I calibrate the battery correctly if a complete shut down happens before reaching 0% (as I understand the calibration procedure I need to discharge the battery from 100% to 0% in one go)
    - Can a faulty PRAM battery cause this problem?
    - Can I check the status of the PRAM battery?
    Thanks for any help
    John

Shown below is the discharge curve of my A1275 battery (it contains 3 individual cells) vs. time. After 2h6min the hard shutdown occurs each time - at a 'remaining' capacity of ~300mAh.
The battery itself doesn't get calibrated to a lower value, it remains at some 5044-5090mAh when doing a calibration.
The true capacity seems to be only ~4600-4700mAh, but since the calibration procedure doesn't work successfully with this battery, the problem will persist.
Maybe there is a way to lower the battery capacity on purpose to a lower value. There might be a possibility with IO_reg.... (?)

  • Keeping Satellite C55-B901 plugged in even when battery is 100%

    Hi,
I just bought a Toshiba Satellite c55-b901, and i was wondering whether it is fine to keep the laptop plugged in even after the battery is fully charged or not. Would that affect the battery's life or is it okay.
I also have a cooling pad that keeps the laptop cool.
Would you recommend i keep it plugged in, keep using it when it is 100% and only recharge when 10% and stop when 100%, or use it both ways as i like?
    Thanks in advance!

Do you know the software called Battery Manager?
As far as I know its part of the Toshiba power saver and it should be preinstalled on the Toshiba notebooks. This tools helps you to handle the battery properly and to increase the battery life time.
Nevertheless, the battery should be calibrated from time to time to keep a good battery performance as well as to increase the battery life time.
To calibrate the battery, you should run the notebook at battery power until the battery would be fully empty. Then connect the AC adaptor and charge it until the battery indicator would switch to green (or blue depending on the notebook model).

  • Feeling the power current when battery is charging

I recently replaced the battery in my powerbook g4 after the recall and now when it is plugged in, I can feel the power current when I touch the bottom, back of the display, and space around the trackpad.
It is not very strong, but present enough to notice the difference between when it is running on the charger and running on the battery.
I am currently in europe, using an adapter. I'm not sure if this could be the problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as to why this is happening? I am getting nervous about using my powerbook when it is plugged in, feeling an electrical current can not be good.
    thanks.

this effect is probably due to leakage through the ac adaptor, it is common with small ac adaptors, the current is too low to be a hazard in non-critical environments, but it is still annoying
it arises because there is no earth (aka ground) connection to the adaptors for most small consumer electronic devices, these have just a two-wire conection to the ac socket
but there is some coupling through the adaptor, so, unless the attached device is earthed some other way, it will 'float' at the ac voltage and any exposed metal parts may give a distinct tingle
i have a palmtop power supply that actually leaks enough to draw small sparks if i touch the pda to a grounded surface, but this still meets safety limits! my two-wire ipod charger leaks enough to feel as well
this leakage could be really annoying with the metal-cased tibook (but the later aluminium powerbooks have an earth connection in the adaptor and so there's no tingle if used with an earthed power outlet)
so assuming your wall-socket power connection to the adaptor is just two-pin, try putting the connector in the other way around (this will swap the live/neutral ac connections to the adaptor which can improve things with some designs)
the sure way would be to attach an earth wire to the powerbook
    BUT...
if your power adaptor does have an earth connection you should not get any tingle, in this case you should stop using the adaptor until you can have things checked to see where the problem is (it might not be the adaptor, it could be a fault with the building power cabling)

  • Is it okay to keep mains connected when battery is fully charged

is it okay to keep the mains power connected once the battery is fully charged or should i disconnect from the mains power

There are two things that will kill an apple battery, charge cycles or lack of charge cycles. I've seen dead batteries with hundreds of cycles and others with a few dozen. You have to use it normally, meaning keep it charging, then unplug it and go use  it on the couch as it was designed to be used. I've got two good years out of mine and its still at 83% health. If it starts to die next year its no big deal, $120 for a replacement battery is a drop in the bucket when you consider the original value of the computer and the amount of use I've gotten out of it.

  • Screen/Computer does not Power Up when life the Display from being Closed

Sometimes (not always), when i come back to my MacBook Pro and open the display after it has been closed for a bit, the screen and computer does not power back up or anything. If you look at the screen there is a very FAINT image on the screen of whatever was open when the screen was closed, but you can't do anything, nothing is responsive, etc. I have to hold down the power button until it turns off, and then right before it turns off the screen will power up for one second and then shuts off. Any ideas?

I am having a similar issue when transitioning from my external display via the Mini Display to DVI adapter back to the internal LCD. The screen will go black, the machine will not sleep if I close the lid, and none of they key commands appear to work. The only response I can get is the caps lock key will turn off and on. When I restart the machine, I get no details on a Kernel Panic, or anything else, so wondering if it has something to do with the video drivers.

  • G7 will not power on with battery at 100%

I just bought a new battery because the one that was in said it was charging but the windows app always said 0% charge so I bought a new one. It's needed  a  new one for a year, so  I put the new one in and let it charge up until windows app in the corner said it was at 97% not charging. I unplugged and it was like  there was no battery in at all. I plugged the power cord in and I was at the windows shutdown error startup.
Ain't nobody got time for that. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • Does WiFi stay connected when charging iPhone

I've noticed lately that when I wake my iPhone from standby when it is plugged into a power source (charger or usb on my computer) that the WiFi connection is already there (the phone has been on standby overnight in the case of the charger). I get the impression that the iPhone is maintaining the WiFi connection when it has external power, but have not seen any references to this behavior. I have noticed this since at least 3.1, don't remember if earlier or not.
My iPhone is up to date with OS 3.2.1.
This is not a problem, just curious if anyone else is seeing this behavior?

Just wanted to throw what I have seen in. I have an AEBS in my house. When my phone is in low power mode with screen dark and I wake it up, the symbol moves from 3G to Wi-fi symbol. When I open my Airport Utility, it shows me the number of users. Unless I actually have Safari on the iphone open and running, it only shows one user (my MBP). When I open Safari on my iphone, then I show 2 users. If I close Safari, it moves back to one user...
