Does leopard run on ibook g4

hi what does an ibook g4 need to run osx leopard

Hi Ronda,
I managed to get hold of Kappy to thank him for his input into my problem and I am glad to say I have now found you. Look, when you don't often visit "Communities" it's not always easy picking up where you left off and I have found getting here somewhat circular (me no doubt!) . So many thanks.
I think Communities support is great. I used to frequent Communities, but that was quite a while back now, but I find it as good now as ever.
On the topic of iBook and Leopard, the computer we were discussing re discussing changing the name of the Home folder, that was and is an iBook G4, (2005/6). It came to me when I bought it running Leopard and from what I gathered from the seller was that the "discs" had been lost and they were OS X 10.5.x discs. I guess I took it for granted that they came with the computer when he bought it new.
The previous owner no doubt purchased "upgrade" discs to run Leopard.
The big issue is can iBook run Leopard?  The answer is yes if the iBook is a G4 2005. The G4 2004 won't do.
Here is a quote from EveryMac.com
<  http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook_g4_1.33_12.html >:
The "Mid-2005" iBook G4 models use the same external housings as the earlier iBook G4 models, but otherwise these systems are quite different. When compared to the iBook G4/1.2 12-Inch (Late 2004) that it replaced, the iBook G4/1.33 12-Inch (Mid-2005) has a faster processor, twice the amount and faster RAM (512 MB compared to 256 MB of onboard memory), superior graphics, a larger hard drive (40 GB compared to 30 GB), and built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR as well as AirPort Extreme (802.11g).
What follows thereafter is an exhaustive layout of the iBook G4 2005-2006 specs. If you are interested in iBooks at least pay EveryMac a visit.
By the way Ronda, I stand corrected, you are right (dare I say as always?), the iBook G4 came pre-installed with Tiger not Leopard, namely: Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8D37).
I understand, however, the purchaser would be told right then on the spot that she or he could get Leopard install discs for that particular iBook G4 2005, if they so wished. If you bought online and wanted an upgrade they would upgrade the OS, memory, whatever. But the standard pre install (as opposed to customized) is as you have so correctly stated.
Wikipedia cites Apple < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Leopard > for the specs required for running Leopard:
Apple states the following basic Leopard system requirements, although, for some specific applications and actions (such as iChat backdrops) an Intel processor is required:[52]
Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)
DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)
At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
At least 9 GB of disk space available.
Not much left to discuss, I would say.  :- )
Cheers,
Gareth

  • Anyone managed to run Leopard on an iBook G3?

I would like to know if there are people who succeeded installing Leopard on an iBook G3? I know that with the current system requirements its not done, but with some magic anything is possible.
If someone managed to install it, please share your experiences of Leopard on an iBook G3 so other people can learn from it.
    Thanks in advance

    Steven:
Next... I'm going to really push the limits and try installing Leopard on my Bondi Blue G3...
Wow! That's really pushing it! Let us know how it goes.
Those of us who have older hardware know that there are many users who run later Operating Systems on non-supported hardware using helper utilties like XPostFacto. There are always those who push the limits, and I expect it will be done again. For me, I see no other reason for wanting to intall Leopard at this time.

  • Leopard run at all on G3 iBook?

Recommended processor aside, will Leopard run at all on G3 iBook?

I can not get my G3 iBook to run Leopard. I started it in target mode and did an install. When it started to book I got the grey screen and spinning wheel. I let it set for over an hour, nothing. Next I started a good install in target mode then had my g3 use it as the boot drive. Same thing.
If anyone can get it to work let us know what it took.

  • IBook does not run on battery

My Ibook does not run on battery when it reaches 48%. It just shutsdown with no warnings. I have to connect the AC adapter to work if i disconnect it the ibook just shuts down. I have to waut until it reaches 100% and then i take the AC adapter. I book shuts down and after i turn it on with out the AC and it stays running on bat until the 48%. Then i have to go through everything again.

Till now my battery has been working perfectly. The machine is about 1 year old and I use it heavily for my work. I prefer to unplug my battery when it's full, and use it till it go's to sleep before plugging it in again. This results in a very high Cycle count (453) but a still perfectly working battery (98% according to CoconutBattery), I can use the machine for about 4 hours on a full battery.
The amperage would be 0 since your battery is not in a charge cycle.
Part of your problem could honestly be your cycle count and method of caring for your battery. If you check some of the research about Li_ion batteries this is the worse way to use it. Li-Ion batteries work best with little charges. Deep cycling Li-Ion can kill the cells. There is no good reason to charge the battery and then use it as you have been doing. This just kills your battery for no reason. The MacBook is designed to cut the charge off when the battery is full and it does not hurt the battery to lie idle like this. The method you're using can prematurely kill your battery.
Either the battery has a problem that is not showing on you readings or the battery circuit is fried. Do you know someone that has a MacBook or live near an Apple store so you can test your battery on a known good MacBook. Or you could try one of their batteries in it.

Bluetooth icon on menu bar shows bluetooth off. When opening bluetooth preferences it shows the devices I've connected previously,( my mobile phone), and other devices I've attempted to connect but not very successfully: my iPhone and MiniMac.  The bluetooth dongle in the USB port shows a continual blue light but does not react and the iBook does not recognise that it is there. There is absolutely no reaction when I try to pair my mobile phone, which I've done successfully before upgrading to Leopard, either by the iBook or the mobile phone.
I assumed that Tiger was not bluetooth compatible with the iPhone or MacMini running SnowLeopard and hoped by upgrading to Leopard I could achieve some file transfers between the three devices (iBook, iPhone and MacMini)

  • ICal does not run one event that has a Applescript attached to it. 24u?

I have a number of reoccurring events in iCal that run a Applescript.  Tow of them refuses to run.  I have tried it as a Applescript and saved it as a run only and neither works (the script run fine if I test them by hand).
so I thought I have a look in the log and found this 24u information.
can anybody help out here? I am not sure why it appears, if it is good or bad, how to fix it and if it is at all realted to my problem.  Other scripts seem to run well, it is this one and an other one that do not get activated by iCall.
They run on a MM running 10.6.8, iCall 4.0.4 (1395.7)
    Thanks.

    Hi,
It looks like the version of 24U's Appearance OSAX you have installed does not run on Lion.
I would contact the developer to see if they have a version that does yet. See http://www.24usoftware.com/AppearanceOSAX
Alternatively you could look to see if the Applescript really needs to use it.
    Best wishes
    John M
Edit: If you are running Snow Leopard, I think you may need to make the application "iCal Helper" (which you'll find in iCal's application package) run as 32 bit. I'd also suggest you check this with 24U.

  • Should I install Leopard on my iBook G4?

I have read some of other people's experiences in these Apple discussions but want pose the question again with the specs of my own computer. I have an iBook G4, purchased in early 2005, running 10.4.11, with a 1.33 GHz processor and 1.25 GB of RAM (I just upgraded from 768 MB of RAM). I am liking Leopard on my new iMac and would like to upgrade to Leopard on the iBook, especially since I could then use Time Machine to back it up easily to an external hard drive. Should I take this step? How much free space on my 80 GB hard drive should I have in order to make this move? (I now have only 11.75 GB, which I know is not enough, as Leopard takes 9 GB, but I use the iBook for work and could conceivably take off some personal items such as music and photos. By the way, I purchased the iBook myself for work, so I am not breaking any work rules to have personal stuff on the computer.)

Thanks to all of you who gave me the confidence to install Leopard on my iBook G4. I did it very methodically. First, I purchased 1GB of RAM, which, when installed, gave me the maximum of 1.25GB of RAM. Then I pared down my music and photo libraries so that I had a much bigger chunk of free space on the 80GB hard drive. Then I installed Leopard. First I waited for the DVD to be verified (a longish process), but then the installation went very smoothly. All in all, it took under 2 hours. I realize I won't have some of the graphic animations in Dashboard, but I think the advantage of having Time Machine will outweigh that. Thanks again, folks, for your advice.

  • A few problems with Leopard running on my White iMac...

I have only found 2 problems so far with Leopard running on my iMac. First off, the most annoying one:
Sometimes, especially when switching users, the screen turns to the "gray screen of death." You know, the one with the request to restart your computer in like 4 languages and a huge picture of a power button... anyway, it is getting quite annoying and I wish I could make it stop. It has also happened when I have been dealing with moving large amounts of data, "large pictures, movies, etc.)
And now, the second problem. I was just looking up the memory left on my hard drive when I noticed something I hadn't before. my 160gb hard drive had 50gb left. not too strange there. but when I checked through all the things (apps, users, system, library, developer, etc.) in it (I simply did apple-i and checked the gb each of them took up) and after a quick add-up on my calculator widget, all the things in the hard drive added up to 50gb. so I have 50gb free, 50gb used and a 160gb hard drive. How does that work? Do I need to do something to get that extra 60gb back or is it just gone???

Is there any way just to show hidden folders like on a PC?
There's probably a way to coerce Finder.app into showing everything
(all is possible in unix) -- but I don't know the OS-X magic words.
It told me that improper of the "sudo" command could lead to data loss
and i don't want to risk doing anything stupid (like a misspelling) that
could lead to my hard drive being wrecked.
Good advice. IMO, the 'du' (disk usage) command is safe, because it's
'read only' -- but I undestand that you'd be hesitant to trust your data
to advice fom an anonymous voice from "The Internets." I can't/won't
    argue with common sense.
You can run the same command without the 'sudo' prefix. It might
miss a few things and/or spit some 'permission denied' messages,
but the results will at least be a lower-bound of disk usage.

  • Finder does not run properly after starting up [Mountain Lion]

I've installed MountainLion from Snow Leopard 10.6.8
My Mac is Macbook7,1 (Macbook White) Intel Core 2 Duo
When the installation finish, it seems like Finder does not run. I have to click on the Finder icon on the Dock to make it run.
And then I got some of problem after that
    1. When I Click "About This Mac", nothings happen.
    2. When I Click "Restart...", "Shutdown..." or "Sleep", nothings happen. So, I have to Shutdown or Restart my Macbook from "Login Window..." only.
    3. Some of my settings in "System Preferences" do not be saved. Such as Trackpad settings (I can't "Tap to Click" in every time I start up my Macbook, I have to use physical click instead.) and Spotlight Hotkey settings (When I switch the Language, the Spotlight is popping up.)
I'm not sure what is the cause of these problem.
    Could anyone help me please.
    Thank You.

I forgot to mention (and add a new level of strangeness) that Mail is retreiving all of my messages from my personal (AT&T) account without issue.
And I just discovered an even bigger problem: all of my emails from my Sent and other folders from my work account are completely gone!
I may have no choice but to revert to my Lion system as of yesteday, before I installed ML.

  • Leopard Running Slow

I use my iMac 10 to 15 hours per day to do my work on being video/photograph editing. Last week I noticed OS getting very sluggish, to the point where I couldn't even run 2 applications at the same time.
I thought maybe its a good time to re-format and re-install all my applications thinking something has gone terribly wrong with my OS so by re-formating my machine it should fix my problem. Wasn't I wrong, I've now re-installed Leopard which took me approximately 8 hours to re-install, not to mention re-installing Final Cut Pro Studio, that took just over 48 hours to re-install. I was seriously dumbfound seeing Leopard saying that its going to take 8 hours but sure enough, it did. I've installed Leopard before and from memory it didn't take longer than an hour or so.
Since my format I decided to just continue using my machine and see what will happen over the next week. Now I'm noticing my render times from Final Cut Pro have dramatically increased. A 30 minute video would generally take me 25 to 30 minutes to render to my desktop, now its taking a little over 2 hours to do the same job.
I'm seriously ready to crack..... I've had my iMac for well over 2 years now so I'm well aware of its performance and capabilities when running applications like Final Cut Pro, Motion or any of its applications that come part of the Leopard OS.
What I've also tried doing is running Disk Utility and repairing its permissions. It did find a few things it needed to repair however it didn't make much difference to the performance.
Is there anyone that can kindly guide me in any further testing or some other suggestions?
    It will be greatly appreciate.

Lyssa you hit the nail on the head...!
I just called Apple care and the gentleman on the phone said it’s possible that I have a hardware problem and that he would get me to do a series of tests to see if we can allocate the problem.
He also said that if the OS took 8 hours to re-install (no updates included in this time) he believes I could be the hard drive.
At this stage he first got me to shut down my machine and disconnect the power for 15sec, then restarted and got me to do a verify disk under disk utility. That came back saying it was ok and verified.
Next he asked me to install my OS disk 1 that came with my computer (Tiger) and switch the computer off. Then holding down the D key, followed by switching the computer back on and waiting for the Apple hardware test box to come up. He then asked me to tick the extended box on and hold down the Ctrl + L keys. By this stage you should see the looping text flashing, then I hit the TEST button.
Supposedly this test will take approximately 2 hours to perform and should do a very in-depth hardware test.
I totally understand that installing maximum RAM will speed things up, especially loading mutli applications, but what Shake ‘n Bake fails to understand is that my system with the current hardware worked just fine for over 2 years now. That meaning same system install, same RAM, same HD etc... this performance issue only started last week so installing extra RAM isn’t going to solve my problem, I have to first find why its only just started happening.
Anyway, I’ll keep posted on the hardware test results.

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

  • REPORT DOES NOT RUN CORRECTLY , URGENT PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
I am trying to run a report from visul basic screen, but it does not run correctly. Here is how I am running the report. There is a screen developed in VB This screen prompts the user for user id and password. Once it gets that, it connects to the oracle database and pulls out a column from a table. And passes that value as a parameter to the report. Now I am calling the the report for each individual value . There are 21 value being pulled out of the database and it invokes the report 21 times. So there are 21 report engines gets started. Is there a better way to do that ? Secondly when I pass the parameter , some parameters does not pass correctly I guess , because its not generating any out put . Like out of 21 may be 10 or 11 reports gets generated correctly but rest of the reports are blank. I debug the screen i saw that the parameter value is correct, everything seems good. But still the reports are comming blank. Any Idea why it is so ? The command line that i am using in VB screen is
    Shell "C:\progra~1\ora95_2\bin\rwrun60.exe P:\Business_Analysis_&_Reporting_Tool\Test_REPORT_Templates\STORE_TYPES\Baby_Distribution_Report.Rdf USERID=" & UID & "/" & PWD & "@cposp201 DESFORMAT=PDF DESTYPE=FILE DESNAME=" & txtPath.Text & Replace(strName, " ", "_") & ".PDF BRND='" & adoRecBrand!Brand & "' PRINTJOB=NO PARAMFORM=NO"
In the above command " adoRecBrand!Brand " is the parameter thats being passed. This is actually a recordset and brand is the column in it. When I debug the screen , I see the value also there. But the report comes out blank. Please help. This is urgent.
    Thanks
    Feroz

The way you call reports is not scalable. If you have 100 records come back from database, you would end up launch 100 engines at the same times, which probably will blow up your machine. You should use oracle reports server to do that. You can either use rwcli60 to submit the job to reports server, or invoke rwcgi60 from URL.
I am afraid some of reports engine failed to start and you get nothing back in your case.
After switch to use reports server achitecture, if you still see some report is blank in your application, then you can run that report with that special set of parameters manually and see if any problem with the report itself.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    -Shaun
