Does Lightroom automatically save pictures after editing?

I just started using Lightroom with Creative Cloud and am very new to digital photography having just gotten a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 for my birthday.  When using Lightroom to edit the pictures, does it automatically save the picture?  Does it overwrite the original photo?  If not, how do I find where it is saved to?
Sorry for the noob questions!  Thanks in advance for any answers.

Yes. LR stores each change you make to an image in its database. The actual
image is NOT changed however. LR keeps a separate file of previews in the
catalog. As you edit your image, each chafe is recorded as metadata and
these changes are also reflected in the preview you see. This is true for
RAW, JPG and TIFF files. The changes are only applied to your image when
you export it. This is known as parametric editing and allows for the
creation of multiple versions of a photo from one master copy. The catalog
is then the location of all changes as well as the location of the original
image and the preview. There is nothing to save as each activity is
recorded and saved automatically.

  • How can I tell LR not to automatically import pictures after editing and saving?

Whenever I open a RAW file from LR into Photoshop and save it within Photoshop as a tiff or whatever, it gets automatically imported to the LR catalog. Is there a way to avoid this?

    Jim,
I know that it`s not a raw as soon as it`s in PS. That`s why I open it as smart object.
One more question: In the preferences there is an option "stack with original". I would expect the tiff or psd to be in a stack with the raw file. But it doesn`t get stacked with it. So what is the option supposed to do?
It does stack with the original on my computer. Opening the raw image in Photoshop as a smart object does allow you to go back to the raw file in Camera Raw. And it adjusts the raw file. But when you close Camera Raw you are back working on the image in Photoshop. All the work you do in Photoshop is saved in the TIF or PSD. If you then go back to Lightroom and delete that TIF or PSD file you have thrown away all the adjustments done in Photoshop. Of course the raw file will be impacted by the adjustments that you made in Camera Raw, and it affected the TIF or PSD. But you're still throwing away all the Photoshop work.

  • Users are not able to save pdfs after editing - Adobe XI. They do not use the Win7 explorer preview pane.  If they completely close the Win7 explorer window, they can save - Adobe XI thinks the preview pane is open when it is not.

Users are not able to save pdfs after editing.  Product is Adobe XI, OS is Win7 64-bit.  When saving, an error pops up that the file cannot be saved, it is in use.  If they save as a different name, it works.  Found several forums/blogs/etc that suggest the problem can be solved by closing the Window7 explorer preview pane.  They don't use the preview pane.  I figured out that if they completely close the explorer window, they can save.  But this means they have to open and close explorer for each file.

Hi, I would like to chime in and say that this problem has not yet been resolved. It is extremely annoying when all I do is highlight a document in the file explorer and I get 5 errors (evenly spaced out about 20 seconds apart telling me that "Microsoft
Word Cannot Start (24)". These errors persist even after windows explorer and word are closed. And I don't want to start terminating processes just to make them stop every time.
I'm a little frustrated with this problem and the other problems I've encountered with MS Office 2013 with file corruption, crashing, 2010 compatibility issues, and the whole host of errors when trying to actually do WORK with Word.
I do work with long, complex reports in Word because that's the best way available for myself (and my coworkers) to use. However, I sincerely regret upgrading to Office 2013 because of it. I love it, all of its features, and its interface, but I simply cannot
    use it without problems.

  • IPhoto does not see any changes after editing a photo in Camera Raw

    Hello everyone ,
I have some small problem with my iPhoto. I have set up Camer Raw in iPhoto as  External Editor, so when I click on edit in IPhoto,
automatically opens my JPG in Camera Raw. After editing in Camera Raw I'm clicking on ,,Save image" then destination is ,,Save in same location" When I go back to iPhoto to the same photo, iPhoto does not show any changes I have made in Camera Raw.
What could it be or should I set something in iPhoto or in Camera Raw?
Is there a chance in order to deal with this?
I will be grateful for any assistance and
    I'm waiting for advice
    Dawid

Any time a RAW file is edited in any 3rd party editor from within iPhoto it MUST be saved to the Desktop and imported as a new file. There's no other way to do it.  So the photos you've edited and saved are somewhere in the iPhoto Library folder system but cannot be recognized and used by iPhoto.
The following is geared for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements but might have some info relevant for you:
Using Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 9 as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
s  I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS/PSE without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in iPhoto".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.
This way you get the best of both worlds.

I lock my photos after editing is complete ...
The beauty of non-destructive editing and snapshots (and, now, publish services) is that, just like negatives of old, your editing never has to be "complete."
When I say "complete", I dont mean "finished forever", I mean "finished for now".
I dont know how I do it, but sometimes I end up with AutoSync turned on by accident - last time it happened I hadnt even used AutoSync recently, it turned on by itself, upon restart after a crash I think. Even if my analysis is wrong and its entirely due to operator error - the result is the same: massive inadvertent edits until I detect the condition.
Also, I make another mistake sometimes (I think its me): when fast typing, I end up normalizing exposure across a whole sh-load of photos... - still havent figured out how I do that since I dont even see a shortcut for that. Sometimes I catch it right away, sometimes not until much later.
Another frequent mistake made by newbies a lot and seasoned users upon occasion: forgetting when edits will target multiple photos vs. just one.
I could go on and on... - I love that I can tweak edit settings on a whim, non-destructively, but I dont love it when changes are made inadvertently. Locking does not keep you from editing, just reminds you that it had previously been considered "finished for now" - you can proceed to edit if you wish, or revert to locked state after viewing a detalied list of changes. "Save Metadata" has now become obsolete for me, replaced by "Snapshot & Lock". I dont know about you, but my workflow is:
    - After import, spend a good while editing, until done for now (at which point I snapshot & lock), then optionally at some point in the future:
    - Revisit for re-editing until done for now... If thats just one change: say Exposure +.1, and it was intended, I confirm intention then move on. If I plan to make a few more changes, I unlock until I'm done with it, then relock).
To each their own, but ChangeManager has become my all-time favorite plugin. - Gives me a very warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that my photos will never be changed inadvertently - only intended changes... - I hope Adobe builds this into Lightroom proper in Lr4, but even if they dont, I'm covered. I never realized how much stress it was trying to be ultra-careful all of the time when using Lightroom, to not make inadvertent changes, until that stress was gone...

  • Why does Lightroom color not match when editing in Photoshop CS3

I just started Using Lightroom 4, the only version of lightroom that I have used. Short version, saves me heaps of time. But I went to edit more in photoshop and noticed that the color is dramatically different. I have Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1)and the color space is ProPhoto to match lightroom. If I make edits in lightroom, say removing dust spots, it shows in the photoshop version. It seems that on the shadow side is where it really shows. My workflow would be to import as original RAW in lightroom 4 (canon 1d mark II) and go about editing. Right click to edit in Photoshop CS3, and this is where colors go crazy. Then if I save the file with no edits done in Photoshop and compare side by side in lightroom, they are completely different. What is causing the drastic difference?
These are screenshots where in the left screenshot the original image is the dark image and the lighter is what it looks like when opened in Photoshop. The compare in lightroom on the right screenshot is what it looks like when I saved the file from Photoshop. So how does opening in Photoshop, then hitting save change the image? If i make the edit in lightroom then export the jpeg and open in photoshop, I get the appropriate color, exactly the same as my original lightroom raw.
My external editor settings in lightroom are tiff, prophoto colorspace.
photoshop preferences are to preserve embedded profiles.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, when you "Edit in" Photoshop CS3, it should give a warning dialog that says the version of ACR in Photoshop isn't compability, with the option "Open anyway" (won't work well) or "Render in Lightroom" (which should be fine).  Or, if you've created your own "Edit in" preset, you should get the option "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments".
So long as you've chosen "Render in Lightroom" or "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments" (depending on how you've edit up "Edit in...") then colour should be OK.
Colour options in PS should be something like:
Check all the "Ask when..." options, just to make sure you get warned of mis-matches.  And I suggest the RGB policy should be "preserve...".
And the final thing: to be sure of no colour mis-match, you need a calibrated/profiled monitor (with a hardware tool like Spyder, ColorMunki, Eye-One etc).  When there isn't a monitor profile containing a colour space (which needs a hardware tool, generally) then different programs can make different assumptions and display the same image differently.

  • Wlan does not automatically turn off after anna up...

    Hi All
The wlan connection on my N8 does not automatically terminate after using mail and sometimes ovistore after anna update - I have wlan scanning off and power saves enabled -  is there an obvious setting I am missing or is this another nokia power saving concept ?
    Thanks in advance
    Boothy

Same problem, automatically disconnects sometimes and not others. Its annoying having to manually disconnect the wlan each time.
Plus its happening with the 3g connection, the solid lines appear to say the 3.5g is being used after looking at e-mail from the homescreen widget. Made sure e-mail prog was shut and no apps running and widgets were set to offline mode, but still open 3G connection
before Anna update I used to be able to go to connection manager and disconnect, now the connection doesn't appear in connection manager even though I know its active.
Put the phone in offline mode, then back on again, connection is then dropped and the lines are broken again showing no 3g connection active.
Whats going on, why are the applications not terminating the used connection when the program has been terminated?

  • I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop cs5, but they dont save properly after editing

I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop, but then after I have edited, i save as .raw, and open up the newly saved file and it just comes up as a grey messed up picture.  What am I doing wrong?

I thought that it was preferrable to do editing on RAW files rather than TIFF for highest image quality.
Yes, it is preferable to do as much editing on the raw files as you can including global and local tone & color correction in Camera Raw...but there is a limit to the work you can do and sometimes you must go ahead and render the raw file into Photoshop for additional work. Then you'll be needing layers and other functionality that can't be done on a raw file. At that point you'll need to save as a TIFF or PSD. If you work in 16 bit and a large enough color space, the TIFF or PSDs will still be capable of the highest quality...as others have indicated, the Photoshop .raw file format ain't for photography per se.

  • Location of pictures after editing

After I edit a picture, how do I know where to retrieve the newly edited photo since there is no save as option, and Im not sure where they are automatically saved to?

Welcome to the Apple user to user discussion forums
They are saved in the modified folder in the iPhoto library - BUT is is strongly recommended that you do not go into the iPhoto library after them - iPhoto is a database and if you make any changes of any sort to the contents of the iPhoto library you may corrupt the database and lose data.
There are many correct and safe ways to properly access your photos with out going into the iPhoto library - click here for a discussion of them.

  • Where are my pictures after editing in LR?

I just downloaded the free trial this morning and plan on buying right away...I love Lightroom! I edited some pics then saved them as Jpeg 2000 files. When I'm trying to upload onto Facebook the pictures are no where to be found w/in My Pictures. Should I have the left the files as Tiff? I'm so confused this seemed so simple in PSE6. I can open up LR and there they are...is there an easier way to save them, or create a folder?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jessica

    Jessica-
Try again, but start with creating a folder in a spot you can get to easily. Then run Export to JPEGs in sRBG format, about 800 X800. You can create and save an Export setting so you have to do this only once. Once you've done it, it'll be very easy the next times.

  • How/where do I save photos after editing in DxO Pro?

Previously I have used iPhoto for all my photo storage/editing, but have just started using DxO Pro9 as my external editor, btu am confused as to what to do with the newly edited images. Exporting to Application does not work as iphoto cannot read the file. Exporting to original folder (uising the RAW image from the Masters sub-folder to start with) does not seem to show in the previews, back in iPhoto. Best I've managed so far is exporting to desktop, then dragging back into iPhoto, so it is imported again, but this means everything get duplicated doubling the amount of disk space used. Any suggestions, please?

If DxO Pro9 is a photo editor then set it as the external editor and when finished editing save (not save as) to return the image to iPhoto - other wise you have to save to the desktop and reimport giving your multiple copies
And what ever you do stop directly accessing the contents of the iPhoto library - it is not supported and will cause you problems - as an external editor you can choose in the iPhoto preferences to use the RAW - but if you do then you still have to save to the desktop and reimport the edited photo
supported access to your photos is described here - How to Access Files in iPhoto

  • Unable to save files after editing, can I unlock an entire folder?

    Hey,
I have never posted here before, and I have done some searching online but havent found an answer to my question...
I am editing images with CS3. I had saved some on my Mac and some on a PC and put them all together to edit on the Mac.
After I do some editing and try to save individual files it tells me that it is locked and I need to unlock the file in Finder. I get that...
But I have a TON of images to edit and I dont want to do it for 800+ individual images. Is there a way to unlock entire folders?
Also, did this happen because I combined Mac with PC? I had never done that before and was wondering if that is the cause?
Thanks very much for any help I can get.

Thanks for responding, I am fairly new to Macs, would I do that by going into system prefs? Where do I do that?
