Does Linux do anything About SSD Performance Degradation?

I have been thinking about getting an SSD for my laptop but just read this article on performance degradation of SSDs: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2738/8
I typically use ext4. Does anyone know if any of the Linux filesystems/kernels/etc do anything about SSD performance degradation? Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Maybe new SSDs don't have the issue?

My OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs slowed down just a tiny bit soon after installing them, but TRIM seems to be working well and they don't seem to be slowing down any further. I'm running them on ext4 with journaling enabled, and only the log files are being directed to temp files.  Everything else is going to the SSDs, and they are being used just like regular hard drives.

  • Does anyone know anything about iPhones and/or iPads having barcode scanners for business purposes?

Does anyone know anything about iPhones and/or iPads having barcode scanners for business purposes?  I am doing some research about the benefits of using a Q R Code type of system, but question which handheld sets would be more compatible for using that type of barcode.  Being a avid Apple supporter, I cannot seem to find very much research on this specific topic.
    Any thoughts?

I have a QR reader on my iphone. Works just brill. I've used it to create business cards, with a boat load more information on it (Including my duty times, etc)
Most of the QR readers in the App store are free, so give them a try. You can copy and paste the data just like normal text.
What application for them did you have in mind?

  • [i4] Does anyone know anything about the camera "patch" is made ?

    Hello everyone!
The "patch" round transparent in front the camera back from my iPhone 4 does more place :-(
I therefore wish to pick up the shiny metal ring.
But what is this "patch"? I need to know the field to select the appropriate glue:
    Metal-Plastic / Metal glass ...
I fear that sticks to the kind cyanolycrate superglue3 leaves me a white film on the wafer if it is plastic ...
Does anyone know anything about this "patch" is made?
    Thank you in advance!
    Merci d'avance !

What patch are you referring to?  I could be wrong, but I do not believe any such "patch" exists.
The only change to the iPhone4's design since it was released last June is that it is now available in white.

  • Does anyone know anything about U2 being downloaded for free to everyone with iTunes?

I am wondering about my iTunes account, I heard a whole album was free to everybody with an iTunes account. I apparently got the whole album downloaded into my iTunes account without even realizing it, and it charged me money, so I'm wondering can I get my money back for free because I got charged when this album got downloaded to my iTunes. The album was by U2, and I didn't want to get it or even get charged the money for it, so I'm wondering about this, can someone answer me about this if you know anything about it, thank you.

If you mean the Songs of Innocence album, it's free. If you got charged for it or got an unwanted charge for anything else, click here and contact the iTunes Store staff.

  • Does anyone know anything about Mackeeper?

My imac is 2 years old now and im wondering about defragmenting the hard drive and I found Mackeeper and I am wondering if anyone knows anything about it, or if it is even necesary

It is not.  In fact the only tool you need on a Mac is backup software*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
MacKeeper is one of the worst pieces of so-called "maintenance" software, and even other "maintenance" software out there should not be used without a good backup plan.

  • Does anyone know anything about OrangeSubmit?

    Hello All,
I'm not sure this is pertinent to this forum, but I just got my website up online on HostMonster and they offer "free Search Engine submission" through OrangeSubmit. I don't know anything about this and was wondering if this is really free and if it will help people find my website where I hope to sell jewelry and other items.
If anyone knows anything about this site I'd appreciate hearing from you and/or any other suggestions.
    Thanks, Wendy

  • Yosemite ssd performance degradation

Hi. I have a Late 2012 mac mini and Plextor M5Pro ssd drive. Before upgrading to Yosemite i had ssd write speed about 400-430mbps (according to benchmark utilities like "Blackmagic disk speed test"), but after i upgraded to Yosemite today - ssd write speed degraded to 100mbps, which is just awful.
    What should i do?
i tried to reset smc, but it had no effect. Also I'm not considering fresh installation of Yosemite after full disk format since i have too much stuff installed and configured right now.

The BMDST test is s piece of software and the software is out of date now. I have a samsung 840 Pro and although the test does show slower my drive is as fast as it was before I upgraded. I use FCP, AE, Photoshop extensively and if anything my machine is faster since Yosemite.  You also cannot test the startup disk accurately while it's running so you will need to target boot or usb boot to get an accurate performance test.
I really don't think apple even has a way to detect and slow you system based on TPH. The performance advantages of TRIM, as measured by Toms Hardware, are relatively small and some believe it will increase drive life. Backblaze reported SSD life is way longer than reported. I have run SSD for years and even my POS custom RED SSDs for my camera are still fine after everyone once complained they would die in a few years, it's been almost 6 years
    TL;DR
F the Benchmark and do work and see whats really happening rather than read blogs designed for link bait. Funny how OWC posted this story and everyone is freaking when they sell drives that don't need TRIM or so they say and right after Sammy released the 850s #imjustsaying

  • Does anyone know anything about using a VPN service

I was hoping someone here could advise me as to whether there are REAL benefits from using a private VPN service? I understand there is a little slow down utilizing a VPN but I'm sick of every website, my ISP and Tom, Dick and Harry knowing what I'm doing or so it seems.
I'm looking into Hotspot Shield from AnchorFree. This service was rated best in a couple of reviews plus it has apps for iPhone and iPad and my kids Android phones. Plus at 4.99/month or 29.95/year with no bandwidth caps seems a no brainer.
I have nothing to hide but I believe I or we in this country have a right to our privacy. These location based ads starting to come through are terrible. FYI, I do use Ghostery and ADBlock in some form in all browsers. Hope somebody can provide some useful info. Thanks in advance.

    Hello:
I was hoping someone here could advise me as to whether there are REAL benefits from using a private VPN service?
    IMHO, no.
    I have nothing to hide
In that case, why worry?  If you live in the USA (post "Patriot Act") the government can find out anything it wants about individuals.  If you are concerned about web sites gathering data (they do of course, for marketing reasons), block cookies.

  • Explain plan does not say anything about partition

    Hello,
We have Oracle 11g database. And we have range partitioned a table. Now when I see explain plans for queries sometimes it says PARTITION RANGE ALL (when no filter), Some times PARTITION RANGE ITERATOR or PARTITION RANGE SINGLE or PARTITION RANGE JOIN FILTER etc. But sometimes it does not say any thing about partition.
Is the partition pruning being used? Since my understanding is that table is no more a monolithic sort of, but sort of table now has many tables for each partition.
So option is either scan all partition i.e display PARTITION RANGE ALL or scan some partitions, and display it in explain plan.
Am I thinking in wrong direction?
    Please let me know.
    Thank you,

The only thing to do that makes sense is to back up all your data, erase the boot drive, reinstall and update the OS, then restore only your documents from backup and reinstall your third-party software from known-good copies.
Sadly, this is not practical at the current time. She is away from home, in a place with modem-speed internet access, without access to install media or her backups (which are on a hard drive at home.) I was able to operate on her machine by sshing in, and I did the best I could to remove the crap. The rest will have to wait until she gets back.
Here is something I found by googling:
    http://nnrpanel.com/offlineAU.htm
Thank you, I will try them. I doubt they will know anything (since there are no Mac instructions on that page) but maybe they can at least send me to the US center. I have tried the US Nielsen Ratings contact form, three times now, but it appears that either they don't read it or they don't respond to it. It also has a maximum message size of about 250 characters.
I wonder if it may be related to one of those make money at home - be a secret shopper - review products at your leaisure and make a ton of moneydeals.
I would tend to doubt it, if only because they are clearly quite effective (or nobody would be running those ads) and yet nobody has reported this anywhere else that I can find.
I'm going to send some emails and see if I can find someone who knows something.

  • Does anyone know anything about a Apple walkman radio from years ago?

I found a old Apple walkman it's 5 1/2 tall, 3" wide and 1 1/4 deep. It has AM FM radio and it has a mic you can push if someone is talking to you. No speaker it only works with headphones. It has a FCC ID BRA 8ZV SAFS-107   Shinning   Made in Hong Kong  on the back   Does anyone know what year apple came out with it or any other information about it.
    Thanks!!!!!

Meg, if you enlarge the 1st photo, it clearly shows apple at the bottom right of the radio.

  • I have an Intel based iMac that has just developed two small spots on the screen. One 1/8" circle at bottom and a tiny circle at top.  The fading on and off light isn't working anymore either.  Does anyone know anything about this?

I have an Intel based iMac that has just developed two small spots on the screen - they look light brighter spots on the screen. One 1/8" circle at bottom right and a tiny circle at top right.  The fading on and off light on area surrounding the screen isn't working anymore either.  Has anyone else had similar problems?  Any solutions?  Thanks!

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Does anyone know anything about Afterthemac G54 Wireless Card

I am interested in setting up a wireless network. I have an IMAC 800mhz. I am on a limited budget. I found the G54 Wireless Card from Afterthemac.com. Does anyone know if it works esp since it's a USB device?
    imac 800mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

seaduck, Welcome to the discussion area!
You may be interested in the original AirPort card from geeks.com for $82.99
USB wireless adapters are usually problematic since they require drivers that are often incompatible with OS X or are compatible with only a few versions of OS X.

  • MacKeeper - does anyone know anything about it?

Does it do what it says - clean up mac memory space?  Or is it more likely to reek havoc?  RodLds

Stay away from it.   The only thing you want to do is backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And keep your  hard disk from getting too full*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
And since you have an eMac, pay attention to its age, because at a certain point every 4 or so years, the PRAM battery dies, and needs to be replaced.

  • Does anyone know anything about nathanjr and why I am sharing my computer ?

I just purchased my MacPro about a month ago, and it is saying that I share the computer with nathanjr. I am wondering if I haver a virus or worm or it is something someone might know something about. Thanks I don't want to share my computer with nathanjr.

If you mean that you see a computer under the Shared column in the Finder, it doesn't necessary mean that they are connected to your computer. It means that nathanjr's computer is able to connect with you if you wish. Now, if you see this in your own home network or something that most likely means you're network is not protected by a password and everyone can use it.
