Does Lion Server support documents versions?

Is there any way to enable long-term document version saving on Lion server?

I have a very similar setup at my office. Lion Server will push email, calandar, contacts to all of your apple product with out a hitch.
As far the Windows XP machines, you can access email over IMAP with Thunderbird, and calandars via sunbird or the built in web app.
I would ditch the exchange server move to Mac OS X Server, and never look back.
God Luck!
PS. All of your devices will be in sync all the time.

  • Does lion server support a single email address across multiple devices??

I am looking to move from an outdated Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to OS X Lion Server but I am unsure as to how Lion will handle email. I do not want to spend money on a new windows server if I can get a Mac Mini Server to do the job. I am a very small business with a number of email accounts for a couple employees and need access to email and calendar from both the office iMac's and my Macbook Pro when on the road. My IT guy says I need Exchange but he's been off base on a few other items recently and I wanted to check with other sources.
I have 2 new iMac's, a MacBook Pro, an iPad1 and and iPhone4 on the mac side of things and 2 windows computers running XP. I would get rid of the windows computers completely if not for my CAD program which runs best not in a virtual machine mode.
How well will email and calendar entries sync across devices?

  • Does Lion server default with mail gray graylist?

Does Lion Server by default enable mail graylistsing?
This was a problem for me with Snow Leopard Server, Will I have to disable it again, or is it no longer and option with Lion Server?
If I do need to disable graylisting, would I take the same steps as with Snow Leopard Server?
    Thanks in advanced!

Yes, Lion Server's default is graylisting as enabled.  The steps to remove it are indeed the same as with Snow Leopard.
However, right now, with Server.app having bug issues, it seems to change it back from time to time.  If the 10.7.2 update fixes Server.app, then hopefully you'll be able to remove graylisting and it'll stay that way.

  • Does Lion Server have bootcamp?

Does Lion Server have bootcamp? I'd like to ugrade my Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard Server and my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard to Lion but the install for the mac mini will be a pain to do Lion so I was thinking of doing Lion Server for both, so I don't have to pay for both Lion and Lion Server, but I'm wondering if I can do bootcamp since I couldnt' do bootcamp for Snow Leopard Server?

    Hi
Have a look for yourself and compare the two:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
Which is Lion and BootCamp is clearly listed:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/specs.html
Which is Lion Server. I don't see it so I doubt (just as in 10.5 and 10.6 Server) if Apple are going to make it part of OSX Server anytime soon? Still, you never know?
Prior to 10.7 you could download VirtualBox (it's free to download) and install 10.6 Server (and pretty much anything else but not OS X Client) quite happily:
    http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
    http://www.virtualbox.org/attachment/wiki/Screenshots/mac_os_x.png
This may still be the case with 10.7 Server? What you could try is install 10.7 Server, install VirtualBox and install 10.7 Server (again) as a virtualised server. Apart from licensing I can't see why this would not be possible? Why don't you give it a try and let us know how you get on?

  • What OSs does Lion Server Time Machine Support?

Obviously, it supports Lion,, but can I backup to a Lion server running Leopard or Snow Leopard? Anyone know for sure?
    thanks!
    John

It should.  I have no experience with the Server product, but here's the Snow Leopard Help on the subject:

  • Setting up new Lion Server - Accessing documents

We are in the process of upgrading from a 10.4.11 server.
We are not migrating anything over, and are starting from scratch. I've configured users and groups but had a question regarding documents.
On our old server, we used share points to store all our working files. In Lion, I see a "Give this group a shared folder" button. Inside that are "All My Files" and "Documents".
Is there any right or wrong way to store all our working files (small ad agency with art files that are accessed internally and externally). Would I be ok to use that for our working documents? Or should it be a folder somewhere else that is accessed through a share point?
Once I configure the folder on the Lion server I will be copying the files over from the old server
    Thanks in advance.

Well, you are again asking questions that don't have a clear answer.  Let's first look at the physical drive.
So, yes, the mini comes with two drives.  But if you are placing the OS on one drive and data on the other, you have no redundancy.  The mini is lacking enough redundant features, don't trust your data to a single drive.  I would recommend mirroring the two drives and storing OS and Data on the same volume or storing just OS on the internal drives and getting a raid capable device for your data.  Since the mini is a closed box, having your data outside at least allows you the portability in the event the mini fails.  Otherwise, when AppleCare tells you to ship them your mini that will not power on, away goes your data.
As for structure, I tend to work in this fashion.  Lets assume you are sharing from the boot volume.  It will look something like this:
    /Applications
    /Library
    /System
    /Shared Items
    /Users
I suggest doing something like this to avoid Apple's structure:
    /Applications
    /Library
    /System
    /Shared Items
    /SharedFolders
         /Share 1
         /Share 2
         /Share 3
         /Work in Progress
    /Users
But doing this, you are sharing the folders called Share 1, Share 2, Share 3, Work in Progress.  The parent folder, SharedFolders, is simply a container and requires no special permissions since users don't interact with it.  However, it makes a convienient container to targer for backup purposes.  So instead of defining a backup source for multiple folders, you simply do the one that contains all your shares.
Now the other big change that you will need to wrap you head around is that in 10.4.x you were likely using POSIX inheritance.  That no longer exists.  You can only set your shares to use ACLs.  Now this is generally a good thing.  However, if your crew is using CS4 and older, you are going to have an issue with saving to the share.  Especially with Photoshop.  If you are CS 5 and above you "should" be ok.
Protect your data.  Mirror the drives.  It is the only redundancy you have on a mini.  But remember... redundancy is not backup.

  • MAC Server & iTunes : Does MAC Server support central iTunes repositories?

    I need some help
    Problem:
I have a family of "5" who are all MAC users - all alas have different MAC iTunes repositories. I want to create a central MAC Music repository to ease the pain on my checkbook. Three people bought Nora Jones new Album... one person pays - me
    Setup:
    Potential Server:
    BIGMAC1:
Dual Proc Power PC G4 1.25 Mhz, 1 gb RAM
Gig Ethernet Connectivity with 4 Terabytes of RAID storage.
    Clients:
    5 MAC's... (Mac Mini, 24" iMac (intel), 2 Mac Book Pro's (Intel), and a 12" Power PC)
    Current Setup:
I use symbolic links from the desktops to BIGMAC Music repository.
    Mount BIGMAC1 Disk via network
    Open System preferences
    Open Accounts
    Open login items
    Drag BIGMAC1 to login items
    Open iTunes
    <Backup iTunes music directory>
    Select preferences / advanced
Turn off “keep itunes organized” and “copy files to itunes” on all clients
    Exit
    For each user
    Delete <User>/Music/iTunes/”iTunes Music”
    ln –s /Volumes/”BigMAC1 Disk”/Music ./<User>/Music/iTunes/”iTunes Music”
Copy any purchased music to BIGMAC1
    Open iTunes on Client
    Delete Music library in iTunes
    Select add to library
    Select /Volumes/”BigMAC1 Disk”/Music
Once complete your all using the same repository
Issue: If someone adds new music you have to know and add it to you your library…
This works but every so often some family member does something that duplicates all the files in iTunes. I suspect this is something to do with consolidate music library options. "Picture Homer Simpson looking frustrated"
    Help: Is their Recommended Solution?
The above sort of work but is not perfect and I am not a "nerd". I need to maintain my social skills and would love to know if I can just install MAC Server or something equivalent and fix this.
In short: Does MAC Server solve this or does something else?
Hey Apple: I would line up and buy a solution if one existed...
    1. MAC Server in basement… access to music from PC around house. Music ordered is stored on basement PC and backup automatically…
    2. The ability to add a fourth child under account (MAC limit 5 machines to one iTunes Account)
Apple: I am not breeding until you allow me to purchase another person to the family music account…. You would stunt their childhood if this is not fixed...
    TechnoPhobe!

Your solution is as good as any to let you share iTunes tracks, especially ones purchased from the iTunes store amongst multiple users on a single computer.
If you had multiple computers, you could use the built-in sharing function of iTunes and then access them from the other computers, but the other computers would also need 'authorising' to play the protected tracks.
However there is something else you could consider. Have all the music and protected files on one computer, share it using iTunes, and access it using the new TV box. You could have multiple TV boxes and they would not need authorising to play the protected tracks. They would also not modify your iTunes files causing the problems you have occasionally experienced.
There are other similar approach devices like the Roku Soundbridge, Sonos ZonePlayer, SlimDevices Squeezebox but none of those support tracks purchased from the iTunes store whereas the TV does.

  • Does messaging server support java?

    Hi,
Anyone know that does the messaging server bundle's web server support Java? Can I run jsp on that web server?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Which "webserver" are you referring to?
The mshttpd daemon that provides webmail access (messenger express) is not a full-blown webserver software. It is only designed to provide access to store information. It will not run random java files or whatever.
The webserver that you can use for UWC IS a full blown webserver, with the UWC instance being one container - so as to it's capabilities, you should look up the webserver 6 documentation on docs.sun.com.

    Shane.

  • I have an Advaned Format WD drive, will it work with Lion?Does Lion even support AF?

I have a "new" mid 2009 MacBook, and I'm replacing everything on it so I can use it for school. I want to use Lion, and decided to get a new hard drive to compliment the upgrade.I ordered a WD Scorpio Black drive...but just realized it had Advanced Format in the description. I noticed alot of reviewers said it worked with their MacBook Pro's, but dont know if they succesfully got AF to work or not...sounds like there would be a serious performance hit if they couldnt get it to work.Does Lion have any way to format the drive in AF?Is it even necessary?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • How do I make Lion Server support more than one Time Machine disk?

Under Snow Leopard Server, I had two disks set up for Time Machine backups. This came about as I'm running a Mac Mini with the 500 GB internal drives which turned out to be insufficient for one of the connected Macs which uses a terabyte drive. I then added an external 6 TB drive and made it a Time Machine destination too. Worked beautifully. When I upgraded to Lion Server the external large drive was no longer available for backups and the interface for configuration within Server only allows for one drive to be in use at a time. Any suggestions (short on reverting to Snow Leopard) as to how to re-enable having both drives available for networked Time Machine access?
    Thanks!

    Hi Adam,
Before I even realised that the Server app had a setting for TM, I just configured TM backups on my (SL) clients as I had done in SL.
I shared the drive(s) on the server I wanted to use.
For each client, I mounted the appropriate shared drive containing its sparseimage file, then set TM on the client to use that drive.
Then I unmounted the shared drive and started TM.
It mounted the remote drive (without displaying it in Finder) and opened the sparseimage, showing the "Time Machine Backups" volume on the desktop.
So you could use any drive attached to the server to backup any client.
    It worked fine for me.
In the end, I changed my clients to use the (single) shared "Backups" volume which Server.app creates because I can fit all my stuff on one drive.

  • HT1515 Mavericks does not anymore support former versions of Airport Express Setup tool. Any suggestion ?

Maverick's Airport Express setup tool (>= v6) is no longer supporting old versions of Airport Express device.
I could not notice this limitation before moving to Mavericks, and so far, I have no other alternative than buying a more recent version of Airport Express to be able to reconfigure it to fit in my new home wifi configuration.
Is anyone facing the same issue ?
Such an obsolescence planning is unacceptable from Apple. They shoud solve this mistake through a new release of the Airport Express configuration tool, but at this point I'm not really sure they will do it one day...
Is anyone also frustrated or upset with this ?
    Thanks,
    Philippe.

There are literally hundreds of posts on this topic that offer a number of solutions. You may want to search the Discussions forum to access them ... and yes, there are a number of frustrated users due to this.
Basically you have the following choices:
Use a Mac running an earlier OS X version that supports v5.6 of the AirPort Utility.
Run a virtual machine on your Mac that is running an earlier OS X version.
    Use a Windows-based PC.
Update to a newer base station.
There are also a couple of other solutions / "hacks" that involve Terminal edits or using script files that are not supported by Apple.

  • Does lion server have podcast producer 2

The Apple Lion Server description lists podcast producer 2 but I'm only finding pod cast capture and pod cast publisher.

  • Does oracle workbench support earlier versions of DB2 not UDB

    HI all,
In our company we are migrating the DB2 (I think version 2.xx ) of OS2 to Oracle in windows ,
Does the Oracle Workbench support for the earlier versions of DB2,
    if yes how?
if no then what is the way to migrate?
This is an urgent requirment, so pls. provide me a solution.
    Thanks
    Murali.v

DB2 v2 would be at least 10 years back. That may be out of even SQLWays window for DB2.
If indeed stuck without a tool.....
Assuming that there are very few stored procs, triggers, and proprietary SQL views. (MWB DB2 plug-in wouldn't have solved those anyway). The "physical" design of the DB (tablespaces , indexes , etc. ) are likely completely lost using these approaches. There are a couple of ways to accelerate the doing it by hand approach.
    1. [ this is somewhat of a tangent] export the DDL (if you can) and push it into a more modern version of DB2 and have the MWB move that. Use the offline mode to generate suggestive scripts and SQL*Loader control files ( and perhaps also the new Oracle DDL. may have to make some tweaks to it and control files).
    pros:
if there is a large amount of DDL mapping of types is done automatically.
    cons:
    may not be a handy version of DB2 UDB around. (a DB2 Express-C v 7 isn't
prominent on the IBM site anymore. However, may be other versions around at
    you site.)
probably would have to tweak the tablespace/index/etc declarations in the
exported DDL. [ large assumption here is that not using a signficant amount
of deprecated features. If the editing process too complicated effectively
cheaper just to proceed to option 3 below. ]
the data export utility script may need tweaks.
[ if you have LOBS and/or binary columns you're likely to run into problems. ]
    2. Similar approach is to do a DDL capture into a tool like ERWin.
[Not sure if there is a generic DDL capture mode in Jdeveloper that would even talk to DB2 v2  to create a UML model ]
You then tweak that "design model" and instantiate into Oracle. ( as mentioned in another reply there are some issues you'll likely encounter. For example, some types don't map and the MWB docs can help. )
    pros:
much of the straightforward DDL just moves over.
    cons:
may be no tool that can do the design capture for DB2 v2 (was legacy embedded
solution that ran for years that nobody touched. )
with generic mapping loose lots of specifics.
no control files, no export scripts, no warnings,
    3. as mentioned before. Edit the exported DDL. ( I'd strip out tables , indexes, etc. ) and just get it to load before moving one to additional Oracle specifics on those aspects.
pros/cons mostly same as above, but even more manual work.
