Does Logic has a divide (strings divisi) signal (midi) command?

I am working on a string orchestra piece and use a lot of divided string parts. I was wondering if Logic knows a command or way to automatically divide a strings section like 1st violins into two.
For example, in Finale 2010, the notation program, when I write the command "divisi" on a staff in the 1st violin staff, Finale changes somehow the sound of that track so it really sounds like a divided string group. In logic now the way I do it, it sounds like a doubled string track, so 2 groups of 1st violins what gives a doubled unrealistic sound.
I don't know if this is just a midi command in Finale that can be used in Logic as well.
André

Hi André,
In Logic you don't have those preprogramed patch changes like in Finale/Sibelius, (that's is something some of us asked and wait for some time, that the writing articulations on score could perform midi events instead being there for visually only) those patch changes can be performed via midi commands (same thing as pizz/arco), Yes.
The simplest way to do this (only if you use / share the same sound library in Logic and Finale) is apply the divisi and the other articulations in Finale and import the midi to Logic ( I did it a lot to save me time, even with crescendos) Logic will follow/performed the articulations in the midi file, if you have the same library on both, that's it.
If not you can see what the midi file (from finale) says in the event lists and apply it to the library you're using in Logic. (don't forget that you can copy those (and other) events in Logic.
Cheers,
Jorge

• Does Logic has "clip" or Region level capabilities?

Is it possible in Logic to adjust the volume level of a region or clip non-destructively? A good example is Final Cut Pro. You can adjust the clip levels on any of the audio clips. Shouldn't this feature be available in Logic as well? Nuendo has this, Digital Performer now has this.

hi.
if you want to aply volume levels independentely for each region,
and still be abble to change global volume,
here's what I do: Use hyperdraw volume dots on the regions, and use
gain plug in for global volume changes on the whole track.
I use hyperdraw midi regions to drive audiotracks, and with little habit, it's way more easy than logic internal automations, specialy if you need to turn
some plug-ins controls into loops, for creative repeated pans, wah, sequenced sends etc...
Hoping my suggestion is comprehensive enaugh,
i wish you good time with the most complete (complicated!) music software.

• XML updating between FCP & Logic: DP has it, does Logic?

Hello,
While at NAMM, I watched the Digital Performer 6 and they touted a great feature. If you have both DP open AND FCP open, and are working on the same project, whatever you do in FCP will automatically be updated in DP, and vice versa. I think they called it XML interchange, or something like that, but they made sure to state that if you have BOTH programs running at the same time on the same project, any edits you do in one will be updated in the other! VERY COOL!
Does Logic has this feature as well? According to the manual, Logic will import/export XML files, but unless I missed it, it doesn't say anything about the ability to automatically update the same project if both programs are running. I find it difficult to believe that DP would come out with this before Logic, so I though I'd ask more knowledge users if Logic has such a feature. Thank you very much for your reply!

For those interested, here is part of an article on how DP's XML interchange works: http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM08/Content/MOTU/PR/Digital-Performer-6.html
XML file interchange with Final Cut Pro
Both Digital Performer and Final Cut Pro™ (FCP) offer complete end-to-end production workflow: Final Cut for picture and DP for complete soundtracks including music, dialog, foley and sound effects. While recent advances in DP have made it the undisputed leader in film scoring features, DP6's new Final Cut Pro XML file interchange features could very well revolutionize the way film scoring and soundtrack production is done. The two most pressing challenges for any soundtrack producer are tight deadlines and last-minute picture edits. DP6 now allows for a dynamic link between the FCP editor and the soundtrack producer working in DP6. This link can be easily managed remotely via emailed XML interchange files (which are very small) or via a dynamic link between DP6 and Final Cut running side by side on the same computer.
Here's how it works. When picture edits are made in Final Cut, the FCP editor can export an XML file that describes all current edits, which the DP6 composer/editor can simply import to then compare and conform all music and audio tracks to the latest picture edits. All changes are displayed in DP6's new "Import Final Cut Pro XML" window, which provides a complete, detailed list of every new picture edit. Double-click any edit in the list, and DP6 scrolls to and highlights the location of the edit in the Sequence Editor time line. The highlight shows a blue border (old position) and red border (new position) for each picture edit. The DP6 composer/editor can then adjust their conductor track, audio data and/or MIDI data as necessary to conform to the new edit, "snapping" their edits to the vertical red line if necessary.
If DP6 is running on the same computer as Final Cut Pro, the "Export Final Cut Pro XML" command sends all tracks (and all sequences) in the current DP project to the project currently open in Final Cut Pro (or any FCP file on disk, if desired), allowing easy transfer of all work done in DP6 into Final Cut at any point during the production process, from previewing dailies to final conform and export from Final Cut.
In the pressure-cooker world of film and broadcast, soundtrack production most often happens late in the overall production cycle, and these time-saving features offer the possibility for a quantum leap forward in up-to-the-minute delivery of changes to music and sound for picture.
I guess it doesn't sound a sexy as how the demo man made it seem. Is this the same as Logic import/export of XML files?

• Can anyone tell me or give me a link to the latest response from Apple regarding very real weak wifi signal on what seems to be a batch of both the new ipad and the earlier Ipad2. I have just bought a 2nd hand ipad2 and it has a very weak wifi signal

Over the last week or so I have been trawling the internet looking for references to weak wifi signals on the Ipad2 and was staggered by the sheer quantity of people who seem to have identical issues, not just with the ipad2 but also with the new ipad. What annoyed me most from reading the reams upon reams of comments made on the Apple community forum is the fairly large number of people who seemed to believe that 'these' people were either just moaners and wingers or else they must have something wrong with their router set-up rather than a serious fault with their ipad and it seems all because there ipad in question works like a dream.
Obviously I can only speak from my experience, and that is, I have an ipad2 32GB with wifi, purchased about 6 months ago and it works like dream with a good 2-3 bar wifi signal through 2 thick stone walls over 30 feet away. My router is a standard one supplied by my broadband supplier compatible with all 'g','b' and 'n' equipment. However, over a week ago now I bought second hand genuine ipad2 16GB with wifi from a close friend who has just purchased a new ipad3 to replace his old ipad2 (had it for over a year so no longer under warranty). When I started it up downstairs from my router, where I always use my other ipad2 which has a very strong wifi signal, I discovered that the new secondhand ipad2 I had purchased couldnt find a network signal at all. So after doing network resets and all other 'fixes' on the device recommended, I took it upstairs to my office where the router is based and found that the device could now locate the network, but the signal was lost over only 12 feet from the router!
I quizzed my good friend about this issue and he informed me that it has always been like this since he first purchased it and he never thought that it was a fault, it was just the way it was. When he first aquired the device he did think at the time that this distance was poor, but thought nothing of it as he didnt have any other ipad to measur ethe signal strength against, and as his router was in his living room anyway he nothing of it. Fair enough.
So, there we have it. One ipad2 with a very good wifi signal and another ipad2  with a very poor wifi signal running off the same router, both with the same IOS 5.0. ?
As well as all of the other isues that customers have picked up on, such as 'death grip' (which I must say does appear to happen, but personally i dont think that this is a serious issue if you are aware of this issue and have a strong signal anyway), my experience seems to be a good  example of a 'duff' wifi ipad versus a 'great' wifi ipad', an issue confirmed by complaints from a fairly large number of customers who have also reported the same or similar weak wifi signals with both the ipad2 and the ipad3. So, as this shows the weak wifi signal is a very real issue it seems on a batch of ipad2 and 3's, which to my logic is obviously a hardware issue on a batch of early ipad2's and not a software one, otherwise all ipad's would suffer this problem! So, is it a faulty antenna or a faukty network card in an early batch?
So, the bottom line now is, of course, firstly,  how can I get Apple to fix my other ipad2 when the warranty has run out? Any suggestions anyone?
Personally I think good Apple customer service should offer a recall with a replacement on this apparent batch of ipads, dont you?

Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
Good Luck - Cheers,
M.

• IPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them

iPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them. Signal is strong and call quality (me hearing the other) is still very good but it looks as if I’m going on mute while I’m not muting my iPhone. When dropping the call and re-dialing it works fine again. It’s a brand new iPhone 5S but it now happened already 4 or 5 times in 2 days.
It feels like a hardware/iOS problem and not a network issue. It happend with iOS7.03 but I just see 7.0.4 is available so will install that one now.
Thanks in advance for feedback
Best regards,
Marco

Hello Jeff,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the audio on your iPhone.  I would be concerned too if the audio on my iPhone was not working unless using speaker phone.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this:

• How can I use my Dx7 as a MIDI controller for Logic Pro  9? I'm using MIDI/USB cable but Dx7 doesn't appear in the 'set-up' list, what am I doing wrong?

I'm using Logic Pro 9 -  9.1.8
MacBook Pro Retina OSX 10.9.3
DX7 2 FD connected to my laptop with a MIDI/USB cable
When I click the 'scan all models' search in the 'Control Surfaces Set Up' there is no Yamaha DX7 in the list so how can I make Logic 'see' the DX7?

As Colin pointed out, you have to look first in the Audio MIDI Setup. If your MIDI Device doesn't show up there, then Logic cannot see it either (unless you are using Logic Remote on your iPad to play over Wi-Fi).
I'm curious about the "MIDI/USB cable you mention. If the DX7 has a standard 5-pin DIN MIDI out jack, then you have to connect that to a MIDI Interface first that converts the MIDI signal to send it over the USB jack out. Please note that you would see the MIDI Interface in the Audio MIDI Setup  app and not the DX7 itself. Also, in Logic you would see the MIDI Interface in the Environment as a valid MIDI input device.
Hope that helps

• Does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack? (is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC?

does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack?  If so, is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC then to stereo?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

• Urgent help!  does anyone has sample code to do encry in c & decry in java

Does anyone has a very simple code to encrypt a string in c (openssl for example) and then decrypt the same string in java?
it should be very simple but i just can get the ball rolling. i always get different data (even in hex string representation) using the same key and plain text (all in hex) to even just do encryption (not even decryption yet). To my understanding, DES is just bits manipulation. So the output bit pattern should be the same regardless C or Java, right?
for example, in openssl, when i do ecb:
the key:
0123456789ABCDEF
the plain text:
0101010101010101
the in:
0101010101010101
the out:
B4FD231647A5BEC0
but doing the same in java i got
3A2EAD12F475D82C as the encryption output
It is very strange.
Hope someone could help me.
Thanks

whew! i finally get the base64 working. Here is my data from openssl run using DES with ECB mode and no padding: (the des_ecb_encrypt function is des/ecb/nopadding, right?)
thanks alot
-- jin
0123456789ABCDEF
the key in base64 encoding is:ASNFZ4mrze8=
the plaintext in hex:

• Logic has an appetite for RAM - but only this week

Greetings.
I'm using the Mac Pro at work, so ignore my signature specifications.
This week Logic has completely swallowed my RAM, both on session with lots of tracks and plug-ins, and also on the light sessions where there would never usually be a problem.
A colleague installed the Sonic Birth plug-in last Friday. Could this have contributed to some weirdness?
Even without a session open, just the application running on its own, it's eating up 1.06 GB of real memory (according to Activity Monitor). This seems a trifle odd. I'm not running anything else out of the ordinary.
The Mac's specs;
2x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
2 GB RAM
OSX 10.5.8
Logic 8
I am aware that 2 GB is not a lot of memory for a Mac Pro, however it's been running fine for the past 10 months so I don't believe that is the issue. If anyone can offer a suggestion, I'd be most grateful.

On my system both Logic 8 & 9 use less than 200MB real memory, even with my default project open, with no project open it's less. You're sure there's not something open in the background? Logic-8 does use about 1GB virtual memory, Logic-9 uses about 1.6GB virtual.
If you think the problem is Plugin related you can always move 3rd party plugins out of your components folder for testing.

• Does Logic Pro 9 work with Mountain Lion?

Hey!
I was wondering...
My computer has Snow Leopard installed and i would really like to get Mountain Lion. BUT there is a problem... I don't know if Logic Pro 9 will with Mountain Lion. Can anybody help me with it? And also does Logic Pro 8 and the microsoft pack (word, powerpoint, excel etc. 2011) work too? Please help me if you know it
THANK YOU
Cheers
- Kufax

Since I'm not in the middle of anything critical and have multiple backups, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade. I've only been running for an hour or so, but here's where I am:
2008 MacPro, 8x2.8Ghz, 16Gb RAM. SSL MADI PCIe card for I/O. Logic 9.1.7
Tested with a couple of recent, decent size projects (40+ tracks, VIs and plugins). Not seeing any perormance differences.
Working:
- Euphonix MC Mix
- UAD2 Duo
- Spectrasonics Omnisphere
- NI Komplete 8
- Waves 9
- Soundtoys 4
- Wallander Instruments
- EW Play
- Melodyne
NOT Working:
- Access Virus TI. Plugin opens but cannot connect to Virus. I am running the latest stable v4 release - I will try installing the v5 public Beta and report back. This is a deal breaker so if I cannot get it working I will roll back to Lion
- SSL Duende Native. Authorization is failing. Possibly a CodeMeter issue or just authorizations lost during upgrade - will look at this next.
Make sure you are running the latest iLok driver - there was one released a few days ago.
More as it develops.

• Does Logic have db scales markers on the output levels or individual chanels?

I am looking to buy Logic Pro or Pro logic.  Does Logic have VU markers on the output levels, or individual chanels. I use this as a guide to mixing as I know that bass should be at -6db, lead vox at -6db at the output meter on a traditional desk. I can see that Logic does has levels for each chanel but no scale next to it. Is this an option that can be turned on and off?
I can see that it registers the peak level, but I need to see the average level. Looking at pictures and clips on you tube aren't enough to confirm my answer. I know that Pro Tools has this which can be switch on or off. Does Logic?
Hope my question makes sense. thanks in advance.

Anchor points!
What's happened to those? They are/were brilliant and worked perfectly in 7 & 8. If you set them up in 9 it remembers it when you are in the sample editor, but if you then copy that audio file (such as a cresc. cymbal) with said anchor point to another part of the song, the anchor point is forgotten, and if just gives you the start of the audio file as the reference point. Am I the only one with this problem?
Not seeing this - this works just as before here . .

• SleepServicesD[68]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, ""

I have an iMac late 2013 which hangs after one night in sleep mode. The only way to get it back working again is to power cycle it (5 sec power button)
It is a late 2013 21'' imac with 16GB RAM, and a fusion drive, with Mavericks installed.
When I look in the console the following entries appear just before the reboot:
10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x2e0685000, 0x100000]
10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x2e07c5000, 0x80000]
10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x2e0885000, 0x100000]
10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x2e09c5000, 0x180000]
10/10/14 08:15:58,000 bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1412921758 0
A lot of kernel messages, this is always the same. Just before the kernel messages appear these messages:
10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: AppleThunderboltNHI::prePCIWake - power up complete - took 0 us
10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: AppleThunderboltHAL::earlyWake - complete - took 0 milliseconds
10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: VNOP_ALLOCATE(0) 413138944
10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: Thunderbolt Self-Reset Count = 0xedefbe00
10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: IOThunderboltSwitch<0xffffff8023b5c400>(0x0)::listenerCallback - Thunderbolt HPD packet for route = 0x0 port = 11 unplug = 0
10/10/14 00:44:51,000 kernel[0]: IOThunderboltSwitch<0xffffff8023b5c400>(0x0)::listenerCallback - Thunderbolt HPD packet for route = 0x0 port = 12 unplug = 0
10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x1530d2000, 0x13000]
These messages are always Thunderbold related. When I look in to the logs these events occur regularly, also when the system does not hangs over night. Today I discovered the following. Just before the crash there is an IOUnserialize error that is related to Sleep :
10/10/14 00:44:21,874 SleepServicesD[68]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "P ".
Just after restart it generated several similar error, as:
10/10/14 08:16:19,760 configd[18]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "P ".
I am not sure but it seems like that the crashes are more likely to occur when both me and my wife are logged in to the system. My wife is using Parallels desktop 9 with windows 8.1. And it seems that the hangs occur the night after she worked for multiple hour on the virtual machine, but I have to stress that this is just a feeling, I am not sure if that is the cause of the problems. Maybe working for extensive periods is the cause not the virtual machine.
I am wondering did anyone other experience this and what worked for you? I am tired of the hard reboots. Today even the keyboard had crashed (apple wired keyboard with numerical input) I had to unplug it for a while (several minutes) before it started working again. The USB ports were fine after reboot. I tested them with another wired keyboard, while the other one was connected and not working. Switching ports did not help, thus that problem was really keyboard related.
I hope someone has any ideas.
Thanks in advance!

To be sure I reinstalled Mavericks again, the first night exactly the same. This morning the imac did not wake up from sleep again. I checked the logs after a hard reboot. Exactly the same issue as above
It contained multiple FIXME entries. The SleepService was the first FIXME that appeared in the log and is followed by multiple FIXMEs from various sources:
11/10/14 03:05:29,052 SleepServicesD[71]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "Q
".
11/10/14 09:25:45,215 configd[17]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "1 ".

• Does logic pro 8 work mountain lion?

I've updated my Mac Xeon with Mountain Lion and now my Logic Pro 8 is giving me a midi conflict error. How can I fix this or does Logic Pro 8 even work Mountain LIon? Can anyone help me?

I know.. I have both read and taken part in that thread but again....
The majority of peopole who run Logic 9.1.8 and Lion or now Mountain Lion do not have those issues... and because they do not, they don't post in such threads.. so you get a distorted view of the true numbers of people with problems.
Those that do have issues, will naturally post up in such threads... but that doesn't mean they are the majority of users... They are just the 'loudest' and quite rightly so.
I will also say that for me personally, 10.6.8 and Logic 9.1.5/9.1.6 was and still is the most stable platform for Logic of all of the various combinations available... but apart from an annoying issue with the "airplay' dialog box that keeps popping up in 9.1.8 with ML... and the GUI lag affecting a few plugins.. I don't have any major issues with Logic and ML... so I can happily live and work with that setup...
Finally, it's also worth noting that with my own client base.. initially with Lion and then Mountain Lion the number of clients who had problems was much higher.. Probably closer to 20-25% had issues..  but most of those issues were resolved by updates to incompatible drivers/3rd party plugins and so on...
Once those kind of issues were resolved... as I said earlier, the number of my clients who still have major issues running uner Lion or ML with Logic Pro 9 has dropped to less than 5%... and to me, that respresents a minority of all users... like it or not.
