Does LUKS encryption slow down the system?

How fast is the system after you encrypt / and /home partitions? Does anybody notice any difference compared to unencrypted partitions?
I'm thinking about encrypting partitions, but for speed reasons I don't know should I encrypt just /home or also the / partition.
I found nothing on LUKS homepage.

Technically it must be a little slower, but I never could notice it at all. If you do try it, watch top while you're working, the amount of CPU used by "kcryptd" is basically the amount of power you're giving up.

    Hi
I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 model with 4 GB ram soon. I was wondering how much space (memory) does Norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the computer. Also, I am going off to uni so will predominantly be using the laptop for surfing and MS office.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disagree mende1.  In this age of email attachments and social networks, it is actually a good idea to have a good antivirus on your system. {I realize that this is a religious argument and I will say no more}.  With that said, the general concensus is that Norton AV is terrible. It is intrusive and uses up a lot of cycles.
There are a lot of better AV clients out there.  I use ClamXav which is free and uses the clamav antivirus that is open source.

  • Hi, I am using an old PC P2 450Mhz, 256 MB Ram. Is ver 3.6.16 ok for my system or will it slow down the system? Thanks

Hi, I am using an old PC P2 450Mhz, 256 MB Ram. Is ver 3.6.16 ok for my system or will it slow down the system? NODD is the anti-virus. I am not happy with IE or goolge as these are taking too much space. Thanks

The system requirements for Firefox 3.6 are:
    * Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500 MHz or greater)
    * 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
You exceed the minimum and are just short of the recommended processor. It should run OK but the only way to tell will be to try using it. Note that using add-ons can slow Firefox down, so if you start installing quite a few you may get performance issues.

  • Select statement from bkpf slows down the system

    hi guys,
i have this syntax for this coding:
            SELECT * FROM bkpf
             WHERE bukrs = ekko-bukrs
               AND awkey = xawkey
               AND gjahr = i_ir-budat(4)
               AND blart = 'RE'.
            CLEAR: titab.
            titab-ebeln = itab-ebeln.
            titab-ebelp = itab-ebelp.
            titab-budat = bkpf-budat.
            titab-bldat = bkpf-bldat.
            titab-xblnr = bkpf-xblnr.
            APPEND titab.
         ENDSELECT.
this coding really slows down the report seleection and sytem , can anybody advice on how to select the better way

    Hi Ester,
First you need to avoid the select and endselect statement by using SELECT INTO TABLE.
Second issue is u are using non-key fields in where conditions are aweky, belnr  and u r not using the belnr which is first key-field in the BKPF table.
Third one is try to use the fields in correct order which it is in table say in ur where codition it should be like bukrs, gjahr, blart, awkey,....
if you dont have a input field BELNR and u need to do really improve the performance with these input fields wht you have, its is better to create Secondary index with proper sequence for felds.
But i am not sure to give permission to create secondary index bec it takes more memory occupation like what exact BKPF tbale contains, you need to permission from client people along with BASIS people.
i am give sample code  :
SELECT * FROM bkpf  " try to specify the internal table with exact fileds instead '*'
        into table tbl _ bkpf
    WHERE belnr = w_belnr
    and    bukrs = ekko-bukrs
    AND gjahr = i_ir-budat(4)
    AND blart = 'RE'.
    AND awkey = xawkey.
    If sy-subrc = 0.
    sory tbl_bkpf by belnr.
    endif.
Let me know if any doubts.
    <b>Reward with points if useful.</b>

  • Why does CC 2014 slow down my system

Huge Fan. Serious problem. Brand new 1 Terabyte Hard Drive in my MBP.  2 Gigs of RAM
So loaded all my software into the computer, which has been working fabulous for years. Had CC 2013 for all our Adobe products. When loading the new suite with CC 2014 --- now Illustrator takes 5 minutes to open a 3mg Business card file. 3 minutes to save it as a PDF or AI file. PLEASE... someone tell me if I can get the old CC 2013 suite instead of this one?
I have looked for the Adobe Driver, as various discussions seem to indicate that this is an issue, yet I cannot see a folder by this name nor does it show up in my library folder.
    Thoughts?
Does anyone from Adobe read this?

Threads a while back suggested that Word 2004 could run slow on Intels because it was not universal and used Rosetta. 512 memory, standard intel mac mini issue at first, was often problematic you needed at least 1gb which they now ship with. Maybe having not one but two applications open within Word is still causing the problem. But the G4 I find harder to understand: at any rate my own Word 2004 works fine on this G4 macmini (and on an old G3 iBook). Though I only use Word not Excel.
I bought this G4 secondhand on eBay because I knew from threads in the forum about problems with Word that the early intels were having so I didn't go for a new machine. I gather that the next Word for Mac which will be universal is due out early in the New Year, having first been forecast for 2007.

  • Creation of 1000 Cost Centres will slow down the system performance

    Hi,
Can anyone suggest us, that if we create more than 1000 Cost Centres will there be any system/server performance issue in
    SAP Business One.
    Thanks,
    Vishwa

    Hi Vishwa,
You are 50 % correct, Application performance may get slow but it won't clash.
Because If you create 1000 of Cost Center, for each transaction system have to search and have to do the entry for corresponding cost center also. So there is a chance to get low performance. But application won't crash.
Also you check other mean also like network configuration, protocol priority, cache memory size increasing, page fault size and others.

  • Satellite Pro A10 - Does SP2 or 3 slow down the XP performance?

    Hi,
I have a Satellite Pro A10 PSA15E which over the years had become very slow.
Recently I upgraded it's RAM from 256 to the maximum 1gb to try to speed things up but it did not help.
Next I reformatted the hard disc and reloaded the system using the Toshiba recovery disks. This worked fine and the system performance was excellent. However, with on-line security in mind, I loaded Windows SP2 ( with a view to subsequently go to SP3) and this has taken the system back to where I started - very, very slow, in fact pretty well unusable.
Does anyone know if Toshiba support SP2 and SP3 on this model of laptop?
If so how do you install them without killing performance?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi!
I think SP2 or SP3 is supported on this Toshiba notebook because both Service Packs are contains really important security updates and I think this is not the problem.
If you install SP2 or SP3 you will also get the Security center and better Windows firewall. Maybe you should disable both services because the slow down the system performance (I always disable both services).
Just go to start => run => services.msc and disable both services and set the start up type to disabled.

  • Does a partition for Boot Camp slow down your system?

I'm gonna make a partition on my disk for bootcamp. Does adding a partition slow down your system when using Mac OS? I assume boot camp assistant creates a partition wherever there is enough required free space. And if this free space is in the middle of the disk, doesn't the system have to skip back and forth over the partition to access data?
Or does boot camp assistant create the partition at the end of the disk?
    Thanks for your replies.

Boot Camp partition is generally created at the end of the disk so to speak. While the partition is created, files are moved and arranged so that there is a contiguous space for the partition.
NO it does not affect the OSx performance at all as long as you have enough free space in the OSx partition for it to perform satisfactorily.

how can i fix my mac book pro i bought in mid 2010, it is slowing down. the pin wheel does spin a alot.

    try this;
open disk utility - verify disk permissions - repair disk permissions if errors are found.  might take an hour or less - depending on how much errors needs to be repaired.
restart your macbook and see if that sorts it out for you.
also check your hard drive space.  if your hard drive is almost full, that will also contribute to your macbook getting slower....
    good luck

  • Does installing Desktop Experience on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 slow down the server / increase processor usage?

    Hello.
I'm running a tekkit classic (Minecraft) Server on a dedicated server I got from OVH, Im just wondering - Im currently using ClamAV for an antivirus, But I would like windows defender.
Im wondering if installing Desktop Experience on my dedi would increase processor usage or slow down the dedi even slightly.
    System Specs:
    RAM: 32GB DDR3 ECC 1600MHz
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245v2
HDD: 2x2TB SATA (Both used, specified as different drives)
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Theres only 1 indev tekkit server currently running on there, Im getting 0-5% processor usage. I may be setting up more modpack servers  - but im wondering if installing desktop experience would increase the processor usage or slow the dedi down.
    Thanks.

  • Norton anti-virus slows down the start up time in Windows Vista

    Hi,
please help, i am being driven to distraction by the slow start up time of my laptop.
I've only had it for a few weeks and don't use it for anything beyond producing word documents etc.
It has gradually been getting slower on startup and i suspect it has something to do with the Norton anti-virus software on it and the updates for norton that i have downloaded (thinking that this was the right thing to do).
Looking at the problems and solutions log on the computer the date that it really started to slow down coincides with downloading a norton update, which i have been unable to uninstall to check if this really is the problem.
Further i have tried doing a System Restore, my laptop was not able to complete.
I am stuck on the DOS screen for 10 mins with the message:
    PXE-E32 FTFP open timeout
I have no idea what this means but the Problems and Solutions log says something about a system hang?
I have looked on the web for other anti-virus software and they all seem to have one problem or another and slow computers down on startup.
Does anyone know of a solution or do i just have to make a cup of tea when i switch my computer on and lace it with vodka till it has booted up completely!
I am a novice when it comes to using computers so would welcome any non-technical advice.
    thanks

    Hi guys
I would like to add some words about my experience using the Symantec Norton Antivirus software.
I have used this software 3 year long. It was great because it supports one of the best virus filtering options BUT it really slow downs the operating system.
I didnt use it on with Vista preinstalled notebook but on Win XP and I have to say that the notebook boot process was halted for about 30sec-1min till the whole parts of Norton Antivirus software has started It was very annoying
However, I switched to AntiVir. This is software described by marina4000 and Im really happy because the boot performance increased.
So finally I would also recommend removing this Symantec Norton Antivirus software and to switch to the other free AntiVir software ;)

  • Why Does My Mouse Slow Down?

Lifetime Windows user recently switched to Mac. I plugged in a USB mouse and as I get close to whatever I am looking to click on and naturally slow down, the cursor slows down exponentially. I read something about this being how macs are, but want to verify that and see what can be done about turning that off if it is the case. It is just awful in my opinion.

So you can minimize LabVIEW 8.5 and the speed returns to normal?  What operating system are you using?
Yes, if I minimize LabVIEW (or switch to another program), my mouse speed returns to normal.  I'm running Windows XP w/ SP2, and using a Logitech Trackman Wheel.
    Marc A wrote:
I noticed this once with Google Earth. Turns out my mouse drivers were set to disable acceleration in games. This slowed the mouse down when Google Earth was in focus. I'm not sure if any drivers treat LabVIEW as a game, but it's worth a look.
Your fix worked for me.  I turned off the "Disable Acceleration in Games" setting and it worked great.  I don't program at home, so it's not an issue for me, but I imagine this could be an annoyance for anybody out there that also does any gaming.  Just an idea for NI.

  • Svchost.exe slowing down my system terribly

svchost.exe slowing down my system terribly. I ran the Kapersky program and no virus files came up. I am getting desperate. I am ready to kill my computer. Why is this process such a hog and how can I stop it?

To find what is causing your computer to use more CPU than it normally does you need to run this.
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt.aspx  ,
Open a CMD prompt with administrative rights (right click it>run as admin) and run this command for 60 secs to capture the high cpu usage:
xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 256 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d cpuusage.etl
The trace will run and give you a warning then revert to a C:\ prompt
The log will be in C:\windows\system32.
    It should be called cpuusage.etl
Please zip the file and upload it to skydrive (or another file sharing service) and put a link to it in your next post.

  • Boot drive in Bay 3 or Bay 4 will it slow down the startup process?

If I have my boot drive in Bay 3 or Bay 4 will it slow down the startup process? I know in old PCs it would look for the boot drive by looking each time in a certain order. If the MP did that then it would probably look at Bay 3 and Bay 4 last on its ordered sequence.

But.... I think there is a but here... Mac OS does still look for other boot drives none the less.
On a PC, most have an option in the BIOS to set the device types (CDROM, hard drive, USB). and the order of hard drives to look. Meaning that I can have a system on a hard drive that is off line, pop it in, make it the primary boot device and boot from it, and boot quickly.
Sometimes people will disable a chipset or not enable hardware RAID on the motherboard.
Startup Disk control panel sets the boot path in nvram and even if you do have 4 boot drives in Mac Pro, it should still boot in 20-45 seconds.
