Does mac have BIOS?

If I needed to boot from CD/DVD to reinstall the OS, how do I dot it from MAC?

If your computer came with Lion/Mountain Lion pre-installed there is no CD/DVD. You use:
OS X (Lion/Mountain Lion)- About OS X Recovery
OS X Lion- About Lion Recovery

does mac have a word and excel equivalent or do I need to use Windows for Mac and get the software separately?

Mac has Pages and Numbers, which are mostly compatible with word and excel.   Both are available in the App Store for $20 each.
You can also buy Microsoft's office for Mac suite.

  • Does Mac have a tool similar to snippy or snagit? Do not use Windows. Need to copy data off archived online newspapers.

Does Mac have a tool similar to snippy or snagit?
    I do not have Windows.
Need to copy data off archived online newspapers. Unable to do so with screenprint, etc.
Heard windows has a tool called Snippy, looked at Snagit, but read free download agreement and it reads a bit 'fishy', as the download is only free for 30 days, etc and it talks about fees etc.

Mac does have two utilities:   Snagit for Mac and LittleSnapper.  There are a few others.  Snag it for mac is just a better "clippings" thing.  It will not scan your image.  There are OCR products available for Mac which might be able to take your clipping document and scan it back to text.
    Snagit Mac is here:  http://www.techsmith.com/snagit-mac-features.html
To see OCR stuff do a google search for:  Mac OCR Software
And you'll get quite a few.

  • Why does mac have to download adobe flash player to view videos

why does mac have to download adobe flash player to view video clips?

If you have a new-ish Mac or one you just upgraded to Mac OS X Lion, Adobe Flash Player is not installed by default. Since some web content is created specifically to be seen only with Adobe Flash Player, if you want to see that content, you need to install it.
It's trivial to do so. Start here:

  • Does mac have an app that graphically finds & highlights file icons?

Does mac have an app that graphically finds & highlights file icons (especially on the desktop)?
This used to be available as a 3rd party app on older systems but I haven't seen it currently.
Sherlock just finds locations as a listing.

The easiest way is to use iPhoto, just drag the picture in to it. To resize it select the picture and in the menu bar "FILE - EXPORT". You can preform basic editing and corrections by double clicking on the picture.

  • Does Mac have an app that will check and correct spelling

Does Mac have an app that will check and correct spelling

Spell Check has been built into Mac OS X for years, including the ancient version listed in your profile. You don't need a separate app.
    Mac OS X 10.4 Help
    Checking spelling as you type
In many Mac OS X applications, you can have the application automatically check your spelling as you type. When you mistype or misspell a word, it's underlined in red so you can quickly spot errors and correct them.
Open the application that you want to use and choose Edit > Spelling > "Check Spelling as You Type."
If you don't see this item in the Edit menu, the application doesn't provide the Mac OS X spell-checking feature. The application may have its own spell-checker. Look in the application's preferences or menus for a spell-checker.

  • Does Mac have a disk cleanup?

PC's had disk defragmenter. Does Mac have anything similar to "clean up" the disks on the hard drive?

these articles are interesting about the fragmentation problem. i had some years ago that osx has software the limits fragmentation. however, in my experience, fragmentation still happens. take my powermac, please (an old joke)... my powermac is a bit over 2 years old. i have never filled the disk more than about 1/2 way. in recent months, the fragmentation is so bad that the disk makes popcorn even when booting... i am now trying to decide about how best to defrag... either run techtoolpro or drive genius or just reformat and reinstall...
on my powerbook at home, my hard drive died last fall. after i had a new hard disk installed, partitioned and installed the os, and restored all the files, my powerbook G4 is running circles around my dual powermac G5... personally i find partitioning the hard drive to be helpful at reducing the fragmentation. i believe it is because the swap, which stays on the root volume with the operating system dynamically grows a lot. and since it is always change size, it affects where the data files get written. with the virtual memory file on the partition with the OS files, which are changing that much, then the data files on the other partition don't also get scrambled so much... at least that is my current working theory... i used to do sysadmin work on unix systems about 15 years ago. we always formatted the disks in at least 3 partition, 1- for OS files, 2- data files, 3- scratch space for all the temp files that change dynamically... with that scheme, our suns would run for years and have very little performance slowdowns...
when i got my powermac and had heard that fragmentation was addressed in osx, i thought i'd try it with a single partition. now i regret it... it is more work to partition and it can be a lot of work if one has to change the partition (though i've read that 10.5 doesn't make one reformat, which i don't understand how that works...), but i've found that it makes less maintenance...
one of the advantages of a reformat and new install is that it clears out all the miscellaneous files that get installed with programs over the years. but it is a lot of work to reinstall all the applications... so the reformat option has it's pluses and minuses... the downside to the utility software is that it can take forever and a day, especially if the fragmentation is bad... last night i stuck around work til about 9pm waiting for techtoolpro to finish it's "diagnostic check"... it was running for about 4 hours before i gave up and came home...
i hadn't heard about iDefrag... but i already have techtoolpro and drive genius, though i haven't used either much before... i wonder if one is better than the other...

  • Does Mac have any plans to create and/or update drivers for multi-media hardware that is useless to me after "upgrading" to Mavericks? This is a waste of money for free..

I have found that since I "upgraded" to Mavericks, many pieces of audio hardware that was compatable with snow leopard is not compatable with mavericks. these machines are supposed to be the best for multi-media, now, without any warning, Mac has really messed this up. What are they thinking. I just converted from PC. Was it a $3000 mistake. MAC....Get BUsy, It can't be that hard to create some drivers that are compatable with common and popular pieces of hardware needed to do the projects I bought this thing for!!!!

similar problem here. running the latest 13 inch mbpr and ableton live software, mavericks obvsly.
experiencing crashes only with external soundcards attached. it happened with a usb interface (NI audio 2 dj) and with a echo audiofire 2 (firewire through thunderbold adapt.)
keyboard and trackpad got unresponsive after the crash with the usb interface as they run on the usb buss I suppose.
This is interesting: If i m running usb or firewire interfaces plugged in to my thunderbold display at home - i get 0 problems. it just works 100%
so what does this tell us? is the hardware of the macbook defective?
but why does the FW interface crash then when attached to the computer directly and not if attached to the display?
this is extremely frustrating. basically my job is using this machine on stage and i cant use it. i m back to my 2007 macbook now running 10.6, thinking about getting a USED machine which was before mavericks and haswell - think these are the issues and what i would like to know:
WILL THERE EVER BE A FIX FOR THIS ON THE LATE 2013 MBPr??

  • Does Mac have a text editor?

I need a text editor in Mac similar to Notepad or Wordpad in the PC. Is there such a thing?
    Thanks

Use Pacifist on your original Install disks (DVD or CDs).
I assume you know what you are doing editing an .ini file; never done it on a Mac but common practice in Windows world. What you could do is copy the file to a separate folder, then rename the original "profiles.txt", work on it, then rename it when done back to "profiles.ini" - that sort of "trickery" has worked for me in the past.

  • Does Mac have a hookup for an XBox?

Can I attach an XBox to my Mac monitor?

If you mean a thunderbolt monitor then no.
I don't have an xbox but isn't the thing supposed to connect to TV's via composit or component connections?

  • Does MAC have a customized database app?

I'm changing from ACT! to Macbook Pro and need to find a simple database app I can customize.

There are a couple of good one out there.
OpenOffice offers a Base but you must download the whole suite (similar to ms office)
LibreOffice also offers Base - again, you must download the whole suite
Try either one and see which one you prefer.

  • How can I do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder which does not have firewire out/input? it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite RCA output?

I need to do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder (http://store.sony.co...ber=HDRAX2000/H) ..this camcorder model does not have firewire out/input ..it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite A/V video output..
I wonder how can I plug this camcorder to the firewire port of my laptop? Browsing on internet I found that Grass Valley Company produces this converter http://www.amazon.co...=A17MC6HOH9AVE6 ..but I am not sure -not even after checking the amazon reviews- if this device will send the video signal through firewire to my laptop, in order to live streaming properly? ..anyone in this forum could help me please?
    Thanx

I can't broadcast with the built in iSight webcam... how would I zoom in or zoom out? or how would I pan? I've seem people doing it walking with their laptops but that's not an option for me... there's nothing wrong with my USB ports but that's neither an option to stream video because as far as I know through USB you can't connect video in apple operating systems ..you can for sure plug any video cam or photo camera through usb but as a drive to transfer data not as a live video camera...  is by firewire an old interface developed by apple that you can connect all sorts of cameras to apple computers... unfortunately my new sony HDR-AX2000 camcorder doesn't have firewire output...
    thanx
