Does Mac Pro auto-detect USB graphics card?

Hi
I have Mac Pro with a half dead motherboard. For whatever reason it can't recognize graphic cards. I've tried switching around with other similar graphic cards from other working Mac Pro's with the same specs (early 2008).
If I plug in a USB graphics card, does that start working immediately or does it need to be installed before anything happens?
I realize this Mac Pro is probably going to die on me any day now. But the USB cards are cheap (since work is paying), I can utilize it until it dies, even with weak graphic power.
Thanks.

I doubted there was anything to be done about the internal graphics, that's why I neglected to give other details.
I just realized it was an older Mac Pro than I originally thought.
It's this one with 2x3.0GHz Xeon processors (A1186) (EMC 2113)
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP30
We run Lion on all our machines.
It used to be spending it's days as a Metadata controller for an XSAN 2.0. But we've upgraded to Lion Server, on two Mac Mini's. So it's out of a job until I can get it to give me an image on a screen.
So the card it's not seeing is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (probably died).
I tested these
NVIDIA GeForce 6600
NVIDIA GeForce 210 512 MB
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
But none of these appear to be on the list of compatibles for my Mac.
I just need it to work for cheap right now. Buying a internal graphics card is to expensive because it's basically going to be an oversized and overpowered harddrive (maybe subjected to some SMB share experimentations).
Right now I can't  even get it on our network because I can't see the MAC Addresses
So no remote controlling either...

  • Mac Pro & ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card

I just bought a new Mac Pro but upon set-up I realized that I couldn't use my existing Apple monitor that has a ADC connection. I would have to buy the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter. Instead of doing this, could I take the ATI Radeon 9200 out of my old Quicksilver and put it in the new Mac Pro? This older video card has the right kind of connection that I need for this monitor. I could put it in and try but thought I would ask before I did just in case it is not compatible.

The Apple adapter will work for a LCD with ADC, but not for a CRT.

There are no ADC graphics cards that will work in a Mac Pro.

  • Mac Pro 3, 1 Upgrading Graphics Card Help!

Hello to all and I first apoligize before hand incase there is a similar post.
I am currently in the mix of getting myself a new graphics card and upgrading the RAM I have on my early 2008 (3, 1) Mac Pro and dont know what I am looking at.
My current specs are as follows:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor:  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory:  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics:  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
    Software:  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I am currently having issues with not waking up from sleep and the performace with the graphics card rendering and fps in games are very poor. Tired of having all of my video settings on low.
I play League of Legands, Dota 2, Portals, CounterStrike . . . etc. There are a lot of different options now for cards than ever before but I am looking to stay within a budget. For the graphics card I am not looking to spend over $400 and would love to find something even cheaper than that. I have researched many of the forms within discussions.apple, apple insider and as well have talked to a senior advisior with apple. She recomended the Nvidia Quadro FX 5600.
I specificly want something at or above 1.0 GB VRAM to handle my 2 Displays which are:
    HP 2711:
      Resolution:          1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
    DELL 2405FPW:
      Resolution:          1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
If anyone can point me in the right direction as to what to buy for a graphics card because I am not that well educated in that side of the computer. I can handle upgrading the RAM by myself but would also like a little push.
    Any help/response would be great!

The "regular" Apple Mini Displayport to Single-Link DVI adapter (is not an ACTIVE adapter) is US$29. for displays up to 1920 wide.
Third party Mini Displayport to Single-Link DVI adapter ACTIVE can be had for about US$35 from Amazon or NewEgg. for displays up to 1920 wide.

The Apple Mini Displayport to DUAL-Link DVI ACTIVE Adapter with additional power from an attached USB cord is US$100. required for for wide displays.

  • Early Intel Mac Pro--what are my graphics card upgrade options?

I bought my Mac Pro in June, 2007 and want to improve my ability to use it for games--right now it's a bit of a dog in that respect. I have a 3 GHz dual Quad-Core processor setup that my hardware overview says is a MacPro2,1 model identifier. My stock graphics card is the GeForce 7300GT using the PCIe bus. Any help would be greatly appreciated--I know there are some expensive cards out there for newer models and that there is some discussion on what is compatible with earlier models like mine, but I would hope that my $5,000 system has no viable upgrade path for this.
    Rocketman

The card is dead silent on idle. I haven't tried it on any games yet, but with 720p HD content like .mkv files playing in VLC, the fan only goes up to 20-25%, and even at that I can't even hear it.
Idle fan speed is about 5%
Idle temps are 63 deg celcius (note that its summer, and my ambient room temps are hot)
Note these temps and fan speeds are under Windows 7 on ATI CCC. I can't get the temps and fan speeds under OSX, but I doubt they are different, the card is very quiet. And yes it does work under bootcamp
Aside from maybe dual flashed PC 1GB 4870s in crossfire, this is most likely the best gpu upgrade you can do presently; it is the best upgrade if you want to stay with apple oem parts.
There is always the dark horse: the GTX 285 from nvidia, however I doubt (wish) that it will be supported for 1st gen MPs. It's possible, though highly unlikely.

  • Cannot install FCP X on Mac Pro (2,1).  Graphics card issue.

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 (2 x 3 Ghz Quad Xeon, 16 GB RAM, and ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512 MB)) AND I cannot install FCP X.  It says graphics card not supported. What do I need to run FCP X?  If I need a better GPU, what card is recommended for this machine?  It's hard to believe I can run the software on my Macbook Air but not my Mac Pro supercomputer...

Radeon HD 5770 (as inserted into the current MacPros) will do it. Make sure it's the unit bought from Apple, not a big box store.
Plenty of discussions about it, here's one:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2544029?start=0&tstart=0
Your "super computer" is more of a super computer than mine, but it did start life in 2007. Things have moved on... your MacPro isn't obsolete, by any means... in fact your original graphics card is probably just about to give up anyway! Mine did last year (I had an older card in a MP 1.1) and am glad I changed it.

Hi I wanting to know what is the highest graphics card to put in to a mac pro 1,1 ?
Apart from the ati 5770 and 5780 can I put newer models in to this mac pro?

newer as in.... you need 10.7.5 and can then look at but you want get full hit from GTX 570 for instance. And there are long thorough threads and all the rest on MacRumors Mac Pro section asked multiple times (but stay with threads don't create new ones!)

  • Mac pro ati radion HD5870 graphics card, is it CUDA ready for 3D Modeling

I would like to move over to MACs from PC but use autocad and 3DStudio. The ATI radion graphics card HD5870 must be CUDA ready for 3D modeling, but the tech description at the online store doesn't confirm if it is CUDA ready.

CUDA is NVIDIA's parallel computing architecture. It enables dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of the GPU.
It is not offered by ATI/AMD Radeon cards.

  • Mac Pro with X1900 XT graphics card EFI boot display

    Hi all,
I've got this problem with my mac pro with ATI Radeon X1900 XT - 1st DVI connected to the 23 inch apple display and the 2nd DVI connected to my optoma dlp projector.
My problem is that the EFI boot menu shows up on the 2nd DVI connection. So basically I see the boot menu only on the projector when it should have been on my apple display.
Can someone please help me figure this out. Can't seem to find any on google or anywhere else.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Sorry, I forgot to add that small detail..
I can switch both connections and it'll work for the mac part of the deal but the windows end cant switch screens - making the apple display the primary display on windows..
now it sounds like a "windows" issue doesnt it!?heh

  • New Mac Pros offer only ATI graphics cards

    http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/graphics/ati-also-wins-macpro-deal
This might be a concern for CS5 users, if the hardware MPE continues to be nVidia only.
I also noticed that the Fermi line of Quadro cards have been announced.

I'm not sure that this means you can't buy an NVIDIA card...just that Apple isn't going to offer one in a stock model.
As far as Fermi is concerned...Adobe has said it will update the list of eligible cards as new models arrive and are tested.

  • Why does my mac retina only show shared graphics card in about this mac?

Im completely new to mac's bought this mbp retina 15 and in about this mac it only shows intel 4000 shared 512mb graphics and in system report it does show the GT 650 M but when I novabenched it it only showed the intel one again.
    ANY THOUGHTS?
APOLOGIES IF THIS HAS BEEN ASKED A MILLION TIMES

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your Mac switches between graphic cards when needed, so About this Mac and third-party applications detect the graphic card that is being used at the moment, in your case, the integrated graphic card.
If you want to use your dedicated graphic card, open System Preferences > Energy Saver, and disable the option to switch graphic cards. Also, you can use gfxCardStatus > http://gfx.io

  • USB graphics cards for Mac

I have a 13" standard MacBook Pro and there is this animation software I'd like to use with a windows partition. The animation software itself needs a 1.5GB or more of dedicated video memory and I don't want to waste more money for a crappy, windows product. Are there any USB graphics cards with 2GB or more of dedicated video memory? If so, what are the make and models of them.

Two things make me think that the Maxtor may not be the solution for your customer:
    1. The maximum resolution for the Intel GMA950 integrated video chip is 1900 x 1200. The Maxtor "fools" the GPU to think it's a 3840 x 1200 monitor.
    2. The Intel GMA950 doesn't show up in the list of compatible GPUs on the Matrox site.

  • Does Mac Pro boot from extend Device?

A usb mass-device, a RAID card or other storage.
Can we use these to bootup Mac pro?

Probably not, I'm not aware of any PCIe SATA cards that will allow you to boot OSX - RAID or otherwise.
Sonnet's new PCIe cards definately don't work...
    Quote, from their site:
"Tempo SATA E4i is currently not compatible with Mac Pro computers. The current cards have been tested to be Mac Pro hardware-compatible. Sonnet is working urgently to post a Mac Pro software-compatible installer to our web site. Check this page for updates."

  • Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive?

    Hello.
Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive? OS=Windows or Linux or BSD or MacOS... I know it is bios specific on a PC if the option is available. If this is possible, does anyone have a link to instructions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Not to get in to an argument over semantics here, but by saying "Windows should boot if you have installed the requisite Boot Camp drivers," you are implying "that the Boot Camp drivers [are] needed for Windows to boot." I was just clarifying your post so people didn't get confused.
As for booting a Mac Pro off a USB flash drive, if you have been successful in doing so, can you share with me your method? I've tried booting of an OCZ Rally2 4GB flash drive and it's never worked on my Mac Pro. It doesn't show up when I hold option down and if I try to boot through rEFIt, I get an error about my Mac's firmware not supporting USB booting (I have the latest firmware installed, too). I've tried GPT and MBR partitions, both to no avail. Booting off USB hard disk drives is no problem though. And I can boot off this flash drive on a Core Duo iMac.
    Any ideas?

  • Vista can not detect my graphic card ATI HD2600 on Satellite A210-128

    Hallo,
Can someone help me with this issue?
I have a Toshiba Satellite A210-128 laptop with vista separately on DVD, but it seems that the dvd is damaged and I can not use it any more.
I have installed on my laptop a brand new Vista from the original DVD that Im using it on my desktop, but the problem is that vista can not detect my graphic card hd2600.
So Im stuck...... I tried to install the ati driver from the Toshiba update site but I get a error because ccc can not detect a graphic card ?????/
    What to do????
It is something special with the DVD that i have from Toshiba ?????
    Thank you very much.

    The whole issue is really mysterious. In my opinion there are two options;
Either your have used and tried to install a wrong graphic driver or there is something wrong with your GPU chip.
Are you 100% that you tired an right graphic driver from the Toshiba European driver page?
If yes, then I recommend contacting the ASP in your country because this could be really an hardware issue.
Furthermore I found you second posting in other thread

and I think more and more that this must be an graphic card issue.

  • Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore, Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore

Looking for advice on Mac Pro with a dying video card. This the early Xeon dual core 3.0Ghz with an ATI Radeon X1900. Maybe the Nvidia Quadro 4500. I know there is s Quadro 4800 which I don't know if will will work with this older Mac Pro. Links and advice is appreciated.

Both cards will work with your computer although that's not stated on Apple's website. I'm using a 5770 in a first generation Mac Pro and it works quite well. I can't get the best performance from it because my MP only has PCI Express 1.0 slots.
