Does MacBook Pro make whirring noise even when shutdown?

Was wondering if this was normal. I have a new MacBook Pro that I hardly use so I shut it down and store it under my desk. I recently noticed it makes the whirring noise from startup, about once a day. My laptop is not in sleep mode but completely shutdown. Checked the laptop and everything works fine, just curious about the random whirring noise.

If it is off, there should be no sound at all. Check the log files to see if anything pops out.

You should take it to an Apple store or an AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) Carefully inspect the hinge joint and make sure there is no debris that you can see, you can try carefully sliding some sticky tape thru the joint to clear any loose stuff out. But this sounds like there might be more going on here, and the hinge is something that you do not want to fool with.

  • My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply).

My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply). The caps lock key is the only light on.

    Hi PatB11902,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your MacBook Pro does not seem to power on, but the caps lock key will light up when you press the caps lock key, you are likely seeing a video issue.
There are several steps that can help troubleshoot this behavior, found at this link:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
    Start with these steps:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Start up in Safe Mode.
If your Mac does not start up normally after these steps, here are some additional tips that can help:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make clicking noises when pressure is applied to the unibody?

I purchased a MacBook Pro in late July of this year. Recently, I have noticed that when I begin to type on the keyboard, the unibody will make a faint sound when pressure from my hands is applied to the MacBook. I also notice a faint clicking noise when I pick up the MacBook Pro to move it somewhere. Additionally, the screen hinge makes a faint clicking noise when the screen is opened. Are these sounds normal?

Check if an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) is closer, as some do not trust Geek Squad to diagnose something as simple as "all the keys are missing". But judge for yourself.: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434

  • MacBook pro will not charge even when the charger is plugged in and working

So this is a strange one.
I have been using my MacBook pro for a lot of film editing and motion graphics. Recently, I noticed that my battery kept going down, even when charging. I thought nothing on it and kept using it. After around 4 hours, the battery went from 90% to 23% WHILE plugged in. This got me nervous. When I plug in the MagSafe charger, the light comes on and I get the "charging" symbol in my toolbar. The light turns orange and then, after a few minutes, the power starts to go down instead of up.
I have had this laptop since Christmas 2012 and this has never happened before. The laptop does charge, but only when I am running no application, when the screen is shut or when the laptop is powered off. Bear in mind that right now, I am on Firefox, that is the only application open, yet the charge is still going down. I assumed it was because I was using Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6 and Cinema4D, but now even when they are not open, the batter will not charge when I am using the laptop.
What is going on? Is in the charger? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am starting to stress!
    Thank you everyone for reading,
    -Rory Campbell
UPDATE: I am currently only running Firefox and Finder. Now the laptop is charging as usual. However the second I open up Premiere, After Effects etc, it goes down. I have no idea what is going on!

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC. If you don't know how to, don't worry. They're very easy to reset. Just google how to do it. If that doesn't work, the only thing I would suggest is to take both the laptop and the charger to your local genius bar to have them examined. If it's less than a year old, apple should replace whatever is wrong with it as long as it was a factory defect.

  • MacBook Pro makes strange noises

My MacBook Pro recently started to make strange noises like an elecyticity cable was sparkling. Today I closed the screen to move it and started to make a greater sound like an old ventilator when I opened back then it went into sleeping, can somebody tell me what is happening?
    Thanks

I think I had the same problem as you on a 13" MBP. After the grinding noise, did your laptop suddenly make a really fast whooshing sound? If that's what you're experiencing, there might be a broken ball bearing in your fan. In that case, you have to take it to an Apple Store and get that replaced.

  • 1st Gen. Macbook Pro Turns Off Suddenly, Even When Plugged In

    Help Me!
My 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo shuts down without warning after I start it up. Sometimes it's 1 minute into the startup, sometimes its 10. But after installing snow leopard 10.6, it does this everytime without fail. My screen doesn't work, so I have it plugged it into an external monitor. When it's turned on and working, it functions perfectly. But all of a sudden, it will turn off. I copied the power information from the system profiler, which is pasted below. Any help on possible fixes would be great. Maybe some sort of MPU reset or something. Also, I tested the battery I'm currently using in another Macbook Pro of the same exact model, and it works fine. • MacBook Pro makes a noise and freezes after I open the lid and awake it from it's sleep after installing Mt. Lion.  How do I fix this?

Eversince I installed Mt. Lion my Macbook Pro has been making a long "beeeeeeep" noise and freezes after I try to awake it from it's sleep by opening the lid.  How do I fix this problem?

Either the license files were not transferred or it has to be relicensed.
Remove and then re-install aperture. On an rMBP this should take only a couple of minutes.

  • My macbook pro keeps zapping me. even when the charger is not plugged in, my hands keep feeling tingly and the fans are running louder than usual

over the last two days since i updated my software, my laptop seems slower, the fans are running louder, and i keep feeling mild shocks (even without the charger). my hands feel really tingly and a little sore. what is going on?

    cheesecakeyumm,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller? (I don’t know if that would have any effect against  mild shocks, though.)

  • My iPhone no longer makes any noise even when it's on loud. Ringtones and message tones don't go off, it just vibrates.

It will still play my music out of The speaker. But when I get a message or someone calls me it only vibrates doesn't make any noise. And if I try and watch anything on YouTube I need to put my headphones into hear it.

  • My officejet 6700 makes a noise even when it is unplugged?

I think my Officejet 6700 is haunted, It is continually making a noiseas if it is    trying to print. I have even disconnected the power source and all other cables and it still makes this noise. What can I do to stop the noise as it has become very distracting?  Any suggestions would be helpful.

Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I understand that your Officejet 6700 printer is making unusual noises.
To better assist you, would you please provide some additional information:
Are you still experiencing this issue?
Would you please confirm that all cables (power, ethernet/USB cable, fax line, etc) are unplugged from the printer?
How was the printer connected (USB cable, ethernet, or wireless)?
What operating system were you using on the computer that was connected to the printer? whatsmyos.com

  • Why is macbook pro makes racing noise?

Racing noises happen at different times:  downloading updates, charging battery, etc.  Either side of mouse pad will heat up significantly.  Has this happened to anyone who has resolved the issue?

    You're welcome.
One correction on my last post:
When the MBP gets hot, the fans are supposed to heat up, and that does generate more noise.
Should read: When the MBP gets hot, the fans are supposed to SPEED up, and that does generate more noise.

  • 09 Macbook Pro makes clicky noises. Ideas? Sounds like the fan hitting something

Laptop makes clicky sound. Not sure what it is. Sometimes the click sound is quick like a slow drum roll. Other times it is very slow, once every second or two. I don't know what the issue is and the nearest Apple store is an hour away. Don't want to make the trip if nothing is wrong

Thank you. I should probably call Apple support and purchase a back hard drive while I'm at it. I'll let you know if this is actually the issue

  • Why does the MacBook Pro make a loud heat noise?

So, when I was playing a game called "Modern Combat Domination" my MacBook Pro make a very loud heat noise? Does that mean I should stop playing the game? I worried. Thank You.

That means your fan(s) sped up to dispose of the excess heat generated by playing the game. It's a sign that your machine is taking care of itself properly.
