Does Macbook Pro Retina support non-Apple optical drives?

So, Im facing the decision of which Macbook to invest in. I understand the new Retina Macbook Pro does not include an optical drive, which is a problem for me as I am a gamer usually using Bootcamp. I see that Apple offers a "superdrive" though it only supports CDs and DVDs and if I am to buy a seperate optical drive I believe I should go for one that also has Blu Ray support. So my question is if I get a third party drive will it work with my Apple computer?
Thanks for your time

  • Can I take my new MacBook Pro retina to an apple store for them to transfer files

Can I take my new MacBook Pro retina to an apple store for them to transfer files from my PC? I am migrating from window 7. I was planning on doing myself but it looks like you need two thunderbolt to Ethernet adapters and two Ethernet cables? What is the best way to transfer? I live in a rural area and think maybe wirelessly may not be the best way? Thanks for any assistance!

Can I use my back up from my PC to transfer? I just backed up my PC to WD My Book. Will that work?
Probably will work fine. It's worth a try and won't do any harm.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2518
What you can transfer to your Mac depends on the files.
Photo files (.jpg .tiff etc) fine
Music files - some may need conversion software to be used in iTunes (unless you had iTunes on your PC) but free converters are there
Video files - ditto, some will work in iMovie, others may need converting to work
Text - Pages will read .doc and .docx files.  Most Word processing files/spreadsheet files/presentation files can be read in iWork but if not, can use Open Office or Libre Office (both free downloads)
Windows programs (eg those with a .exe suffix) won't work on a Mac without installing Windows (e.g. via BootCamp).

  • MacBook Pro Retina with a 500gb hard drive - 400gb storage space?

I have a MacBook Pro Retina with a 500gb hard drive. I recently deleted a windows 8 partition, and now my macbook says its total storage capacity is 399.42gb. Is this normal? Or am I missing 100gb storage space?
When I deleted the partition through boot camp, there was an error, but the boot camp partition seemed to have been deleted completely. I ran disk utility repair and single user mode command prompt /sbin/fsck -fy to make sure my disk was properly partitioned, but it still shows 399.42gb total storage in my "About This Mac".

You did not remove your Windows partition correctly. You need to remove it using Boot Camp Assistant. If you cannot then you will need to repartition the entire drive back to a single partition/volume.

    Hi Fedaja,
There is a section in both of these articles for troubleshooting connecting to the Internet even when you can connect to Wi-Fi.

  • MacBook Air, MacBook Pro Retina, or Non- Retina for academic high school student?

I will be going into high school in September and am thinking of getting a MacBook for school. This is my first computer except for the family PC desktop. I am in all academic classes, and am taking business and exploring technology ( designing and building things) I would use the laptop for schoolwork as well as gaming ( nothing too intense, just stuff like portal and Garry's mod), internet, iTunes, and ilife. It will be a gift from at least 7 people, so price is important, but not a huge factor. I think a 13" screen in perfect for my needs. Would a MacBook Pro Retina, a MacBook Pro non- retina, or a MacBook Air be the best choice for me?

If you use DVDs and CDs more than often (most people don't) then go for the MacBook Pro nonretina. I would go for the MacBook Air or pro retina because their graphics cards are much better then get a $40 usb DVD drive to load movies and other content. The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro retina also have "flash storage" and haswell chips making them super fast at opening files and applications and boosts oversell performance. You sound like you're not going to be doing any editing or graphics intense work so I would recommend the MacBook Air with 8gb ram and however much storage as you want. For around $100 more you could get the MacBook Pro retina that has the amazing display and better graphics. In the end, if the retina display would be the only real upgrade for you and price is in consideration, I would recommend the MacBook Air (also apple usually releases new model macbook airs in June so you could get one now or just wait. I would wait).

  • Why does macbook pro retina display shows 512 mb?

i have bought a macbook pro retina and ofcourse its 1gb display card but when i check about info ( about this mac ) it shows 512 mb instead 1 gb. why?

There are two GPUs in the retina MacBook Pro.  One is the Intel HD Graphics 4000 and  the other is the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M.  The Intel GPU has 512Mb and the NVIDIA GPU has 1GB.  The Intel GPU does not use a lot of power but is not as powerful as the NVIDIA one.  The OS automatically switches between the two depending on what you are doing on the machine unless you disable the auto-switching.
You can get much more detailed report about your system including the graphics hardware by selecting "About This Mac" under the Apple menu then clicking on the "More Info..." button then the "System Report" button.  The Graphics/Displays section under hardware in the window will show you both GPUs.

  • MacBook Pro retina or non retina?

What is a better laptop ?
I'm not sure which one to buy, the retina which I would have to wait for updates to see the full potential of the retina.
I want to have the laptop for A while and will need it to use everyday, emailing, TONS of googling and TABS up
The occasional photoshop and lots of photos.
I haven't owned a macbook before so I want something with a decent hard drive which leads me to the non retina
However the retina is lighter and I'll take it traveling with me a few times a year.
I have heard about problems with both, the non retina overheats and you can't sit it on your bed?
    Is that true?
The retina is more expensive but faster
I'd love to hear from anyone who owns either to help me decide
As I will be buying one in the next few weeks
    Thank you in advance

A couple of things to start off with before we get to "to retina or not to retina".
Based on your description of your daily computing tasks you don't really need "THE MOST POWERFULL AWESOMEST AMAZING COMPUTER EVER".
What does never owning a macbook before have to do with needing a decent hard drive.  And I think by "decent hard drive" you are refering to the storage space and not the quality of the drive.
"Traveling a few times a year" with your computer means you're seeking the slimmest and lightest available?  People who commute with their laptops daily need to be concerned about this more than somebody who will take it out a few times a year.
Also you should never put any computer, windows, mac, or other kind on a soft surface.  What happens is that those surfaces conform to the shape of the computer and block the fan in/out ports.  This prevents the computer from being able to properly cool itself and result in overheating.
So "to retina or not to retina"...
I believe you'd be plenty happy with a regular macbook pro.  In fact I'd bet you'd be happy with a macbook air.  The current generation air's virtually match the 13 inch macbook pro's in specifications. The biggest distinction you'll notice will be storage space for the money.  Ultimately if you choose traditional HDD over SSD you'll get more storage space for the money.
You mention "the retina is more expensive but faster".  You are correct, sort of.  The retina maintains a speed advantage based primarly in this "all flash" design.  Apple directly connected the ram to the motherboard, and the SSD directly to the motherboard as well.  This does significantly increase performance. However I believe you may be able to achieve considerably close performance with a SSD in a non-retina MBP.
In my opinion you would be well suited with a macbook air, spend the extra money you'll save by buying a MBA on upgrading the hard drive/ram/processor and you'll have a computer much lighter than a MBP with similar performace to a 13 inch MBP.
If you're completely sold on the rMBP(retina macbook pro) consider/remember this, however you buy it is how it'll stay. You cant upgrade/change the ram or hard drive.  They're built in and you cannot change them.
If you want to save some money upfront and get less ram and less storage space and upgrade later your best bet is the regular MBP.

  • Please recommend between Macbook pro retina and non-retina.

I need to buy Macbook pro 13 but confused between Retina & non-retina. My main use is internet browsing, watching movies, & email (movies with mainly bluray) So what would you recommend? Does the non retina plays movies (bluray) with good quality?

A BluRay movie is only 1920x1080 pixels at most. Any Mac display would show it just fine - the Retina display doesn't give you any advantage. As the previous poster pointed out, though, you need a BluRay player connected, and software from MacGo. It actually works pretty well in my experience.

The Retina display is great for displaying high resolution photos, but movies are much lower resolution. Email and Internet won't benefit at all.

  • Are there any MacBook Pro Retinas available in Apple Retail stores in Canada?

I have been searching for the past two weeks in the Vancouver region for a MacBook Pro with Retina, and I've come up dry every day.  I have gotten different stories from the same Apple Stores, either saying they have been getting shipments periodically throughout the week, while another Apple Rep said they have received nothing since launch day. What is going on?

No one here works for Apple, knows Apple's shipping policies concerning their stores nor does Apple visit this message board.
We are all end users like yourself helping each other out.  You will just need to keep contacting the Canadian Apple stores.

  • Can I buy a late 2013 macbook pro retina SSD from Apple?

I bought a late 2013 model Macbook Pro with Retina 13 inch last week,
This machine has 256GB PCIE SSD, today, I think it's not enough space for me.
Can I buy an additional SSD from apple, and replace the one inside my MBP?
    How to buy?

anything that shipped with a 2.5" form factor SATA Hard Drive can be upgraded to an Apple or aftermarket 2.5" form factor SATA "SSD-in-a-can".
the early SSD-only MacBook Air models shipped with a "stick" form factor SSD-ONLY in a special SATA socket. No room for a 2.5" form factor Hard drive. OWC and perhaps some others developed some aftermarket "drives" that are compatible.
I think it is only the 2013 models MacBook Air and MacBook Pro and Mac Pro (that do not have a 2.5" hard drive option) that made the leap to the "stick" form factor with a PCIe connection with a different special connector.
These PCIe SSDs are really fast, possibly on the order of 800 MBytes/sec. Compare to a 7200RPM Hard drive's 125 M Bytes/sec burst.

  • Does MacBook Pro Retina Display have light sensor?

I bought a skin protactor for my Retina Display MacBook Pro, and the auto brightness doesn't seem to be working automatically. I was wondering if it has any light sensor, like MacBook Pro, and if it does then where would it be.

Yes, it does. It's located somewhere beneath the keyboard.

  • Does MacBook Pro also work with Apple TV?

I see that it works with the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. Nothing is mentiioned about MacBook Pro. I have a lot of TV shows on my MacBook Pro that I would like to see on the Big screen. That is why I was thinking of AppleTV.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Yes the Apple TV works with your Mac, in fact it is the primary source of your content. You will use the iTunes library on your Mac (more than likely) more than you will purchase rentals or airplay content from your iOS device.

  • Connecting iMac and MacBook Pro using a non-Apple wireless router

I use a Belkin wireless router. Is there any way for me to connect iMac and MacBook Pro using the router to share files? I think I read somewhere that I need AirPort Extreme for this, but I'm not sure. Thank you.

Great resource from Dennis...file sharing, I.e. networking, is a function of the operating system settings and not the brand of router. Using Mac OS X 10.6 on both machines makes it really seamless. Following Dennis's kb article should make the two almost act like one machine.
