Does manual backup to icloud occur over 3G cellular connection?

Does manual backup to icloud occur over 3G cellular connection?

Oh, duh...my bad.  It says that photostream syncs when it gets back to your wifi.  So it does not use 3G to upload new pictures.  Thx for the direction to the answer?
I am surprised that this info isn't more prominent in the ICloud support documents...
Thx again,
Tim

does ipad activation have to occur over a secure connection?

Thank you and Merry Christmas - would the secure server be at Apple? I have at home two (2) wifi networks set up one for work (secured) and one for guests (unsecured), just got an ipad for my grandson and I'm trying to activate it using the guest network and the ipad will not connect to apple for activation. Do you think the servers at Apple recognize that the new ipad is utilizing and unsecured network and will not connect because of this situation?

  • My work computer runs Outlook 2003, which I know will not work with the iCloud, so I hard sync.  But then the new info on my iPhone does not backup to iCloud.  Is there a solution?

I have a Macbook and iPhone and like to back up to iCloud.  However, my work computer runs Outlook 2003, which I know will not work with the iCloud.  The company has no plans to update anytime soon.  Since the calendar and contact list on my office computer are my primay ones, I hard sync through iTunes.  The problem is that any data synced from Outlook 2003 to the iPhone from iTunes does NOT later backup to iCloud.  Is there a solution?

I have the same problem with Outlook 2003 and Win XP which the multinational organisation I work for standardises on and will probably stay with forever!

  • Manual Backup to icloud?

    Hi,
Ok so I manually backed up my iphone last week using the cable and iTunes method. A few days later that iPhone broke due to water damage so I bought Samsung (i know, I'm a traitor!). Now I can sync all my old data onto the samsung via icloud, is there anyway of transferring my last backup stored onto itunes and put it into icloud without using an iphone?
    I hope this makes sense!

You can't put and iTunes backup in iCloud, you can only create an iCloud backup by backing up an iOS device with the data on it.  You would have to restore the backup to an iPhone, then create an iCloud backup on the phone.

  • HT1766 Does ios7 backup to icloud include the contacts themselves or just the contact settings?

Distinguish between content and contacts. Contacts are one kind of content. Does content backup include contacts or just contact settings? Do I need to backup contacts by using something other than ios7 backup?

  • My stuff on my phone does not backup to iCloud!

    Hey,
I just bought a new 5s and I try to backup my phone via iCloud and it goes fine but whenever I check my iCloud account, it only has my old stuff from my iphone 3gs!?
    Thank you.

I'm not sure you will be able to merge everything but, you need to select merge when prompted after turning on each service in settings iCloud.
If you don't want the details stored currently in iCloud and wish to delete them before merging then you can delete this data from iCloud.com on a computer.
So for example in the case of contacts, make sure contacts isn't turned on on your phone (settings > iCloud), go to iCloud.com and delete your contacts there, go to iCloud settings on your phone and enable contacts, choose merge when prompted.

  • Time Machine does manual backups but not automatic.

Time Machine skips automatic hourly backups but will do a backup if I click "Backup Now".  Any idea why automatic backups are not working and how to enable them?  Thanks.

  • If I backup to icloud can I still manually backup too?

say I just want icloud to backup sms, contacts, bookmarks.
but my apps will probs go over the 5gb so I want to manually backup those?
    how does that work?

your apps do not count against the 5GB. Neither does Photostream or your purchased books, music etc.
What counts against the 5GB is the devices cameraroll , the OS backup  and the documents from icloud-enabled apps. For example I use 300MB out of the 5GB, and that's from a 8GB iPod with hundreds of pictures and 2GB worth of apps  on it.
You can backup the iOS5 device to icloud and still make every now and then a backup to your local machine :
Connect the iDevice to iTunes, locate the iDevice in iTunes' sidebar - now use the right mousebutton , click the Device's name and then pops up "back up". This creates a local backup, regardless if you have set all to backup to iCloud. This way you are double backed up .

  • How do I manually backup to both my pc & icloud via itunes?

When I plug my phone in and open itunes, there's a backup section with both icloud and my computer listed.
I want to be able to make a manual backup in both places (you can't be too careful! :-).
I can freely checked either my computer or icloud, and then click the sync button, but I must be missing something else.
What are the relevant Settings that must be selected on the phone?
Does the phone have to be on/active?
What do I need to do in itunes to back up first to one place and then to the other place?
I'm not getting prompted to enter my icloud login/pw--is that a clue to what's not working...

Well, t'uh! (insert apple rant here)
Maybe someone will come by later and explain that bit to us. At least for now, I can mostly do what I want, although it's rather awkward and kludgy.
Thanks for the info, both of you, I appreciate it.
(still grumbling about the apple universe under my breath ;-)

i clicked the download all button at the end of the list of my library iTunes which i believe is in the iCloud, i have iTunes match also, many downloads were reported as occurring over several hours and then received the warning startup disc is full (activity monitor shows 3.99 of 4 GB used) and then another stating the download had not occurred due to the disc being full. most of the tunes still appear to be in the cloud but the disc is said to be full, spent a good period of time trying to investigate what has happened but failed...I'm not well up on all of this as an old chap so any help would be wonderful.....

Thanks Michael, what is the best way of backing up, should buy a cheap standalone external hard drive rather than relying on the Time Capsule which is quite sensitive...
If you read the link I provided you'll get an idea of one way to maintain a backup of your music files, use Time Machine, and not take up as much room on the internal HDD/SSD.

Your internet connection speed has no effect on Time Machine/Time Capsule backups. Since that is all done locally, over your wireless network you actually do not need an internet connection at all.

Also I wondered if I could increase the memory on the setup disk by replacing the 4GB card already in the MBP with 16GB cards, if I upgraded would that affect anything I have stored already like my iTunes?
You're asking about the computer's RAM. Increasing that will not increase the size of the internal storage available to the computer. You'd need to replace the HDD/SSD of the Mac, which, depending on what model you have may or may not be possible (with new models of Macs).

  • Making an iPhone 4S manual backup to a MacBook Pro does not work in iTunes?

    Hello.
I am helping a client's iPhone 4S (iOS 5) to back up his data to his 13.3" MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.8.2 with updates including the latest iTunes v11 without iCloud). We told iTunes not to automatically synchronize when connected. We did tell it to manual back ups from iPhone to MacBook Pro, but we only saw it back up iPhone's apps. Calendar, Contacts, etc. do not get updated on MacBook Pro's software. We don't want to synchronize. We just want to overwrite iPhone's data to the computer. Did we miss something or is there a bug in this manual backup? My client only updates his data on his iPhone and not the computer.
    Thank you in advance.

    randers4 wrote:
Backing up will not update the calendar, contacts, etc. on his MacBook Pro; only syncing does that (and it's bi-directional).  Backing up only creates a device backup that can later be used to restore from if necessary.  He can confirm that the backup was successfully created by going to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and checking the Backups list.
Or am I misunderstanding your question?
We do see iTunes' device and ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ showing the backups. We thought manual backups did COMPLETE backups including calendar, contacts, etc. That's disappointing. The problem is synchronizing is that it likes to make duplicates which is quite annoying. We would prefer iTunes overwrite iPhone 4S' datas to computer. He nevers updates/add data on the computer.

  • Did a manual backup, but update does one itself?

I'm attempting to update my iPad from iOS 3 to the latest version, so I cleared some extra room on my laptop's HD, did a backup, and copied my paid items to iTunes.
After doing this, I have a little over a gig left on my PC hard drive.
When I start the update, iTunes starts a backup of the iPad.
Is this backup exactly what I've already done, and if so, should I delete the manual backup?

    cbrhea wrote:
I'm really hesitant to delete the manual backup
IIRC, this changed after iOS 4.x.
(Prior to iOS 4, which is what you have) If you select a manual backup, it creates a new backup.
After iOS 4.x, there is only one backup and they are incremental.
This means that you doing a "manual backup" simply tells iTunes to backup now. It does not create a new. separate backup. Then when you updated, it simply backed up anything changed form the previous backup
If you do a Restore, iTunes will then actually create a new backup.
If you only have 1GB free on your boot drive, you should definitely clear some space. As a general rule, you should always maintain at leas 10%-15% free space on the boot drive so the OS has room to work.
If you go into iTunes prefs > Devices, you can delete old backups. Keep the most current backup.

  • How to manually backup iPad to iTunes now that iCloud is working?i

Now that iCloud is backing up my iPad finally, I would still like to do a manual backup to iTunes. Can someone provied the details of how to do this correctly? I assume I still have to tether it to my iMac. I'm confused because It looks like it is still backing up to iTunes as it did before but I seems some people using right click on iTunes Icon and so on, so need to get the correct procedure. Thanks

You cannot backup to iCloud and to the computer at the same time if that is what you are asking - in other words if you are looking for a way to always have "backup to iCloud" enabled and "Backup to this computer" enabled - both at the same time - you can't do it.
There is no way to set it up so the whenever you backup - you backup to iCloud and the computer at the same time - simultaneously that is. Does that answer your question?
I thought the OP was asking how to switch between the cloud and the computer for backups but maybe I am wrong.

I hate to say this, but unless you are paying the 25 bucks you cannot back up your library to the cloud.
All you can do is back up the items you "purchased" from Apple.
    iTunes Match
For $24.99/year you’ll get access to all your iTunesmusic including tunes you ripped from CDs or “borrowed” from anonymous friends. It scans your library to see if the song exists in iTunes’ 18 million song catalog and if it does it’ll stream it to you at 256 kbps. If your song is not in iTunes then it’ll be uploaded to iCloud at whatever rate it is on your device where it can be streamed for your listening pleasure. I cannot find any information on how to restore a library, however
    Best of luck
