Does MBP have fan noise?

I'm planning to buy macbook pro 13 inch 2.9ghz. But, I heard macbook pro does have fan noises which I don't like. I heard that the retina version doesn't have fan noises but I think they're just to expensive. HELP MEE!!

You cannot hear the fans when they are running at their minimum speed (about 2000 RPM).   If you put a load on the system, e.g., by running a graphically intense program, the fans speed up and you can hear them.  How "loud" it is is subjective.    But I copied the following from http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1171907.html
"This is how Apple describes the Sound Pressure Level at operator position of several models (with variation between configuration). Note: a faint leaf rustle is 10 dB, a buzzing insect is 20 dB, and a quiet whisper is 30 dB.
Standard 21.5 and 27-inch iMac 2011 Models: 18 dB at idle
13" MacBook Pro (2011) - 16-17 dB at idle
15" MacBook Pro (2011) - 19-20 dB at idle
17" MacBook Pro (2011) - 17 dB at idle
Apple notes (on notebook models) that hard drive accessing raises noise by no more than 1 dB, compared to idle state."

  • Why do I have fan noise after OS 10.7.5 update?

I used to have moaning sounds coming from my Mac Pro (Quad Core, early 2008) when I was in motion graphics programs, or in NetFlix. But ever since I updated to OS 10.7.5 3 days ago, the fan moaning is incessant. Help! I just spent $200 on an old geezer "official Mac" technician, who came to my home office and spent 2 hours doing DiskWarrior!
I am so busy right now, I can't stop to take the tower to a local authorized shop. Will the noise sink my CPU? What is causing it? Is it a glitch in OS 10.7.5? Or do I need new fan(s)?
Anyone hear complaints of sudden incessant noise other than mine?

    I used the following:
Copy and past the following in terminal followed by your password when asked for:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
Note that if you've got anything listed in the Spotlight control panel in Privacy, it will be deleted.
To turn it back on (which I haven't tried yet since I don't use Spotlight):
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
When Spotlight is frantically reading everything and indexing it, a lot of CPU % is used, and the HD is being exercised too. That generates heat and could be the cause of the increased fan noise when your Mac Pro speeds up its fans to try to protect itself. 10.7.5 seems problematic in this respect and since your noise problem started after the 10.7.5 update, the two might be connected. Apple tends to run a Mac Pro's fans very slowly to keep the machine quiet, so any speedup would be noticeable.

  • Retina MBP making fan noise - Apple store unwilling to help

    Hi All,
Any adivice would be appreciated with my problem.  So I got a Retina MBP when it first came out and noticed it had a ding so I took it to the Apple store and exchanged it - no questions asked.  The newer unit they gave me, which I currently have is making a very odd fan noise.  It is faint but apperent when working in quite enviroments like at my office.  Its really annoying.  I took it to the Apple store recently and explained the situation and told them that the original unit i had didn't have this problem at all so I know its not the typical fan noise.  They maxed out the CPU, RAM, etc. and said they couldnt' here it and as such, are unable to replace my unit.  I told them that I do not do that much intensive work on it and only can here it when its quite - they probably wouldn't here it in the loud store.
As a result, I have now recorded the faint sound coming from the fans but I don't know what the best approach is to have the just replace my unit.  Should I take it back to the apple store with the recording?  Should I just call apple care?  Apple is getting worse and worse in my opinion with customer service.  I remember a time where, if i was unsatisfied with their product, they would exchange it no matter what.

    Hi,
Yeah Apple solved it.  I called Apple Customer Support, not "Applecare" and the person was very helpful.  I told them that i recorded the noise - it was in my downloads folder.  The person set it up so I could mail in the laptop through an Apple store and they replaced the fan.  I was without a laptop for like a week though.
    Hope that helps.

  • Why is my imac (mid2011) doing a loud fan noise?

I had my imac since 2011 and never had a problem with it, until 1 month ago. It started to make a loud fan noise. I already reset the SMC, (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) but I keep hearing it. Also checked in disc utility and everything is fine (not a disc problem).

I run Apple Hardware Test and gave me this:
    4SNS/1/C0000008: TL0p-- 124
(during the test the imac went silent for a couple of seconds)

  • Unusual MBP Right Fan Noise

    Hey,
I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas as to whats going on with my C-MBP. Last night I noticed a whirling sound coming from the fan directly beneath the eject key, which got increasingly louder, and went from annoying to impossible, while I was playing World of Warcraft. I thought there might be some sort of thing impeding the flow of air or similar so I turned it off and blew right through the back vents, and it was still there, I turned it off for the night and let it rest standing on the back hinge and it was again there this morning, from the moment I turned it on.
I ran the Apple Hardware test and it found no issues, and all of my software is currently up to date, and I am completely lost as to explanations. DO any of you have an idea what might be wrong?

Take it a an Apple service place or retailer. I am here in Thailand and was dreading having to send my MBP to Apple.
First thing they showed me were some service directives from Apple to re route some cables which can come into contact with the fan as well as inspecting the fan blades and lubricating the fan itself. In my case this did the trick.
If the fan does die then they can order the fans. The part assembly comes with both left and right fans. They can't replace just one fan. They would send the fan assembly to my retailer here and they can swap it out care of Applecare.
I did some research and you can buy the fan assembly from various parts companies like www.powerbookmedic.com for about $90 for the 2 fan assembly.
Another trick I have heard about is to lubricate the fan without opening the computer. Not sure what type of lube to use but with a long nozzle you can insert it from the fan vents and blast a little right onto the fan. Looks to be 2.5 to 3" inside fan vents
The Apple service center told me about this option. I would say just be wise and don't spray in to much.
Helps to understand what it looks like inside.
Here are some photos that show whats inside as well as how to open the chassis yourself.

    hope that helps

  • MBP loud fan noise

I'm not sure if it's the fan or not, but every now and then my MBP will just start humming real loud. It's not a high screeching sound, just a very loud wind-like sound, as if it were opening some giant program or transferring many GBs - but it's not. I'll be in Safari, looking through finder, opening files, or just plain letting it sit there and this noise will start and persist for about 2-3 minutes at a time. Not sure what's going on.

Replacing the fans on any macbook pro is a sinch. it seems intimidating i know... but its really easy actually. I just replaced my right hand side fan just a few days ago. took maybe 20 minutes tops and it was my first time taking apart this glorious computer.
i purchased the fan from ifixit.com check out the site. 40 bucks i think for a new one, but mind works great now.
follow their instructions. its literally just removing a bunch of screws and pulling the old one out and putting the new one in. dont be afraid to be a little rough when pulling the top panel off. you wont damage anything.
i dont know what the apple store charges for the fix, but if it's more than 50 bucks, just do it yourself. trust me it's way easier than you'ld think

  • MBP 15" Fan Noise After OSX Update

    I have a mid 2012, 15" Retina MBP
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Just updated to OSX 10.8.4
As soon as I restarted after the update, both fans started blowing hard.  The computer isn't warm to the touch at all and a review of activity monitor shows nothing sucking CPU cycles.
This must be happening to others.  Anyone heard of a fix?

Thank you so much for responding Mende!
    Here's an update:
I tried restarting the MBP a couple times before posting the issue here and that did not help.
Then after posting the issue, I thought that I should shut the machine down for few mins instead of just restarting.
When I powered it back up after the full shutdown and launched the same programs that were on when I first noticed the issue (chrome, firefox, itunes streaming a Radio station) everything was normal.
After about five minutes runnning, the fans have not fired up (or at least not so I can hear them spinning loudly as they had before.)
So I'll continue my day and if the fans start again I'll follow the SMC reset instructions you linked to (Thanks again).
Will follow up after I'm certain the issue is either resolved or ongoing.

  • T410 - fan noise whilst battery is charging

    Hello everyone,
I own a T410 for about a month now and still have fan noise problems. They only appear when I charge the battery. The fan speeds up and get annoyingly loud just after I plug it in. It's like the cpu is running 100%, but it is not! When the battery is charged or I pull the plug the fan gets silent again.
Also the notebook does not get hot. Everything seems normal, except for the noise.
Is there a solution to this problem? I would be very happy because it's very annoying when I am at University.
It is a T410 with Nvidia Optimus. Preloaded OS. Newest power manager and nvidia drivers.
    Thank you,

    @semjorka,
Welcome to Lenovo forums, could you try updating your BIOS and see if it helps (do ensure reboot first before flashing the BIOS). Also update all your software using ThinkVantage System Update and Windows Update as well.

  • Do you have hdd noise?

I got a mbp 17" c2d w/ hard drive noise, after taking it into store, and talking w/ the technical support, they replaced it for me, today I received it. And the noise is the same. Do all the mbp have hdd noise?
    stock standard configuration: 17"/256MVRAM/2GRAM/Core2Duo
I checked the hard drive is hitatchi

    Man.
Belive it or not, some HDD's make noise. Nine makes a very very slight chunking sound sometimes, when its working heavily, and is a Hitachi 100gb 7200rpm drive I installed myself. This is perfectly fine and not indicative of problematic behaviour.
Some HD's are more quiet than others.
If the noise is very slight, and is not a very shaarp clicking sound, then you are probably just obsessing.
Maybee the model / manufacterer of the HDD is just of the louder variety, especially since the noise persists after you got it replaced. Hard Drives that are messed up in its early life, are very rare. Otherwise, if a manufacter has heaps of bad drives going out, you get something like the IBM fiasco from a few years back, where people stopped buying their drives.

  • 13" MBP - vibrates and fan noise

After a month of perfection, my 13" MBP has started to make a quiet low pitched motor vibration noise: kind of as if a CD was in the drive (there isn't). The whole laptop is vibrating which makes it a little awkward to type on.
The pitch changes when the angle of the laptop is changed - at certain angles the noise stops. The noise progressively gets quieter... after about 30 minutes of use it has gone completely.
It's back when the machine is switched off and switched back on again.
Apple support had no solution - they just made me reset a few things.
Was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar?

Very disappointed with Apple on this one - all the support guy could suggest was resetting the SMC/PRAM/whatever ... or take it to the nearest Apple repair shop - 45 min from here.
In the end I removed the bottom cover, popped the fan out and took it apart - applied a tiny amount of grease and reassembled and reinstalled. Awful fan noise completely gone.
** Doing this may affect your warranty - I may or may not have done the above. **

  • 17" MBP fan noise

I am assuming that it is the fan, as this noise only comes when i start using the a graphic intensive program (Doom 3).
I am worried because it is quite loud and does not sound like the fan noise of my PB. It is similar in quality to a couple of posts in that it terminates in reving up/ down sound. When the sound is present, it is characterised by the "fliping through a deck of cards" or the "card and bike spoke." It is not too harsh, but enough to cause some concern. It is no where near as bad as the grinding sound posted on an earlier thred.
My question(s) are: What did people with smilar problems do and what was the outcome? Is this noise normal? Should I take it to the not so genius bar for an eval?

As an update. I wated a while before I sent it in for repairs. during that time the noise continued to increase. I noticed that if I proped the MBP at a 10 degree angle using a small book just underneath the sreen area the sound would go away. So, i did this for a while as I was reluctant to part with my MBP. However, the sound retured, even at any angle. So I called apple teck and the unit was off. it returned to me in 2.5 days completly silent! if you put your ear over the W key, you can only hear a quiet flow-- Perfect!

  • Are there fan noises from MBP retina 13inch?

i was thinking if i should upgrade to 15inch MBP retina (im within 14days of purchase), but there are lots, i mean LOTS of complaints about fan noises in 15inch
to me 13inch MBP retina has nearly non-existance fan noise which is good, has anyone who owns 13inch MBP retina experince any fan noises?
    kind regards

    Hi CouchP,
I know that there have been some reported issues of the fans running unexpectedly with the 15" retina display, but I stand to tell you that I have personally not had any issues. I've had my retina display since January and I use it all day for work and home and have not had any issues at all with my fan. I use istat Pro to monitor my fan levels and there has been no issue. Keep in mind that those who report issues here are because they actually have issues. Just think of the millions who do not report issues. Besides, the issues that have been reported are intermittent issues and have reported that the fans come on for 30 - 60 seconds and then quiet down again. It's no difference than if you were watching a movie or video which causes the fans to come on anyway.
Just my opinion on the matter. I LOVE my 15" book.

  • Does anybody have problems with the Macbook Pro Retina 15' fans being really loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris?

    Hey guys,
So after a few months of using the MBP 15' Retina, I've discovered that the fans are incredibly loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris.. are any of you guys having the same problem? Like all of a sudden from be quiet to unbelievably loud just as the games load. So yeah, hopefully someone has the same problem as I am having.
What I was thinking was that the MBP Retina 15' is such a beefed up laptop, it shouldn't require that much CPU to run flash games that are not even THAT graphically intensive to which making the fans that loud..
    Thanks!

Believe it or not, Flash REALLY isn't the issue.
It's hardware makers making devices with less processor performance and requiring software makers to fit into a certain requirements of such. Namely iPhone, iPods and iPads.
Flash is designed to give a lot of features and work across many operating systems, browsers and platforms as a write once solution.
Flash has a certain level of processor performance requirement, which hardware makers like Apple want to build less powerful machines using less expensive processors.
Apple has removed Coverflow 3D effects from iTunes and discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro, leaving only the 15" as having a more powerful 3D capable graphics capability.
So Apple is obviously on a anti-heat/performance quest as they further thin up their hardware, trying to kill Flash by punishing Mac users who want to run it.
Flash runs without a fan sound on my older Mac with dedicated GPU and older OS X verison, no sweat.
Head to your System Preferences > Energy Saver and if you have it, uncheck Automatic Graphics switching, this will use the dedicated GPU and shorted battery life, but if your on power should reduce the heat and fan noise.
Another option is to use SMC fan control and set the fan default speed slightly faster, this will keep the machine slightly cooler and not trigger the higher fan speed as often.
If your running 10.8, you will need to System Preferences > Security > downloads to "Anywhere"
SMC FanControl is over at MacUpdate.com.
