Does merging layers make smaller png images?

Hello:
I have a Windows 8 and I am using Photoshop CC - the most recent update.
I am curious about something and cannot seem to find a specific answer...
Does Merging Layers before saving the image for the web make the file size smaller?
Or does it not matter how many (open) Layers the image has when it comes time to save it for the web?
Thank you very much for your time.

If you flatten before you save  for web you loos your layers, your work.  If you use save for web or save as to save an image file in a file format that does not support layers like Jpeg and PNG. Photoshop will temporary flatten the current document  change color depth to 8bit if need be, optionally convert to sRGB color space then encode the images into the file format you want to save, write the file and then revert your document to the state it was in before you did the save for web or save as.  You can then preserve you work by saving the document into a file format that supports layers, PSD, PSB or Tiff.

  • Trouble converting powerpoint files with png images to pdf-Can someone help?

    Hello all,
In my line of work, I create and modify large sized posters that are created in powerpoint. I would have the files print ready by converting them to pdf. I usually have little to no issues executing this. However, I have been dealing with an issue of converting ppt files with png images. The size of the ppt is typically a 42x56 file. The several ways to convert to pdf produces an error each time. Png images are very useful as they provide much clarity vs jpegs or tiffs. The 3 ways I have tried below are:
    A) File>Print>Adobe PDF>High Quality print settings/300dpi results to an error message that says:
"Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current print setup. Try one of the following:
*Check the printer by printing a test page from Windows.
*Make sure the printer is turned on and online.
         *Reinstall the printer driver"
A blank pdf opens up (Selected to open file after publishing)
    B) File>Save as> Change file type as a pdf results in nothing happening. No pdf is produced.
    C) Acrobat>Create PDF results to an error message that says: "An unexpected error occured. PDFMaker was unable to produce the Adobe PDF."
Again, this all happens with ppt files with png images. I took out the png images and attempted to convert to pdf, and the pdf is produced!
Can anyone provide any assistance in creating pdfs with png images or what settings I need to adjust? I am able to covert every other image type (jpeg, tiff, bmp), except for png images.
I am using Microsoft Office 2010 with Adobe Acrobat X on Windows 7 (This happened on Windows XP as well).

    >I have a 48 slide presentation that has a small .png image in the "slide
    >master" so it will show up on every page.
PowerPoint only has to store one instance of the image even thought it is
displayed on multiple slides. But Acrobat can't do the same, the image has
to be stored for every page that it appears on, so that would explain the
    larger file size.
Acrobat is supposed to be able to optimize the storage of common background
images (at least that's the message I see when I do a "Save as..."), but I
have yet to see it to work. Maybe it depends on the application the orginal
file is created in and the PDF conversion method used.
Adding the image into a PDF file later as a watermark instead may be a way
to keep the size down (then it really only does store the object once),
though I believe that watermark images will appear in front of everything
else on the page (not sure if that's a problem for you, it depends on
whether any text or objects in the presentation ever appear in front of the
    image).
What are the dimensions and resolution of the image in PowerPoint? You may
be able to go as low as 75 dpi and not notice a difference, it depends on
whether the image contains any areas of high contrast or text.

I have few small png images (16x16 px) when I place them on

    position.
    e.g. x=100 and y=50
But in MX it only looks clear when placed at an integer with
    .8.
    e.g x=100.8 and y=50.8.
In MX 2004 and later it looks best at integer values on
stage, as it should be. I didnt changed anything in the image

Is this a known Flash MX issue, any ideas?

  • Files with .png images create huge .pdf's

I use .png images in PowerPoint presentations and these seem to create huge .pdf files. (...don't have this problem using .jpg images) For example, I have a 48 slide presentation that has a small .png image in the "slide master" so it will show up on every page. The PowerPoint file is 2.3MB, however the .pdf of it is 33.3MB, making it WAY too big to email, which was my objective.
Any ideas on how to reduce the size of .pdf's which contain .png images?
...note that I "compressed" the .png images inside of PowerPoint prior to creating the .pdf, but this made no impact.
    Thanks,

  • Merging Layers

I would like to know if there is a way to automatically merge a "base" layer with all other layers individually.  For example, Layer one is an image, the "base layer". Layers 2 thru 200 are images that need to be merged with the base layer individually and then saved as individual files.  We are now turning layer 2 on and saving, turning layer 2 off, turning on layer 3 then saving, etc.  Hoping to find an easier and quicker method.  Can anyone help?  Thanks/

Take a look at File>Scripts>Export layers to files.
Once that is done, you can then use Layer>Merge Layers or Layer>Flatten image. The difference has to do with transparency, merge will leave the background transparent, whereas flatten will convert transparent areas to a white background. If you don't have any transparent areas, then either would work fine.

  • Adjustment layers effects not applying when flattening image or merging layers CS6

So about a week ago I noticed something changed with my adjustment layers. In an image I would make a selection and start using adjustment layers to edit that selection, and then once I was finished, I would merge the adjustment layers together so that I could erase outside areas where the effect was not intended. However, whenever I merged the layers, the effects would go away and the thumbnail preview by the layer title would become blank (gray and white transparent) as if there was not anything on the layer. I messed around and I reset Photoshop, and then I thought the layers were fixed. They were somewhat fixed, except I've started having trouble again. Now I'm having difficulty editing this one image i'm on. It's a portrait with a photoshop-created red mask going around eyes, and I used the dissolve layer effect on the original mask creation which was black at first. Then I selected that selection and made more layers editing the hue, saturation, brightness/contrast, and exposure.
I tried to save the image as a jpeg, and the effects were messed up. The hue and all other adjustment layers seemingly applied, except the dissolve effect does not show up at all. So I tried to fix it manually. I flattened the image first with intention to then save it as a jpeg, but as soon as I flattened the image, again the dissolve effect was not applied. Then I tried to merge the layers, and yet again, the dissolve effect was not showing up. It shows up fine in PSD form, something's wrong with the conversion process. Please don't be mean to me. I'm not great at photoshop, I'm not saying that I am or claiming to be a pro or anything I just want help from people who actually get it. I have CS6 and use a Macbook Pro.

I stopped even trying to read this append. For is seems very complex and overwhelmed my little mind. Please consider including some screen captures showing your Photoshop window with your document that your writing about open and the layer palette shows the structure of the document. For me examples and screen capture of the steps involves involved would be very helpful.

  • Why is elements better at photomerge than CC- CC does not appear to automatically fill image based on content but elements does when merging a panorama. Also the stitching is visable in CC but almost perfect in elements- why?

I took 6 panorama shots of a scene and used CC to Photomerge them as one. Couldn't see where to automatic blend the edges and there was 'stitch' lines when the images were merged. So i did the same in Elements 11 and it was perfect. Am i doing something wrong in CC or perhaps not doing something at all?
    Any help, please?
    Dave

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to reply and i appreciate the remarks- if a little harsh- we all have to start somewhere and i am fully aware of the limitations of Elements which is why i decided to add CC to my software. I can only say that if an inferior quality software from Adobe does the job well then CC must also be suited to doing the same which is why i can only think, from your comments, that i have not done something simple- however- following tutorials to get to the end result should have sufficed- it didn't so perhaps i will consider posting the difference between the two applications- and, perhaps suffer a few more 'harsh' comments. The learning curve is quite steep and i am a visual learner, but i'm also not totally incompetent:)
    Kind Regards

First a clarification: you are not addressing Adobe here in these user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge. No one has any obligation to answer your questions.
I'll give it my best shot anyway.
Few folks in this forum are really familiar with Elements, for which there's a dedicated, totally separate forum.
    Different engineering teams, also.
From this perspective, it will be difficult to give you a direct answer to your "why?" question.
Personally, I blend very large panorama shots in Photoshop proper since I can't even remember when without any issues whatsoever, up to and including in Photoshop CS6 13.0.6.
Without being at your computer and without looking at your images, I couldn't even begin to speculate what you are doing wrong in Photoshop, which I suspect you are.  The least you could show is post examples from your panoramas that have gone wrong.
I can tell you that panorama stitching requires significant overlap between the individual shots, besides common-sdense techniques like a very solid tripod and precision heads.
The only version of Elements I have ever used for any significant time was Elements 6 for Windows, which I bought in 2008 to use on a PC (I've been an avid Mac user for 30 years).  I found Elements so limited and so bad that I successfully demanded a refund from Adobe.  IU mention this only to emphasize that I can truly only address your question from a Photoshop (proper) and Mac user point of view.  I couldn't care less about Elements, but if you have comparison examples of panoramas processed in both applications, by all means post those two.
Generally speaking Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve, while Photoshop has many hand-holding features for amateurs and beginners.
Perhaps the bottom line is that you should stick with Elements if you personally manage to get better results there.

  • How to merge layered images?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to merge layered images in Illustrator CS3?
I'm used to doing it with Photoshop. I thought the merge in Pathfinder would work but apparently not
    Thanks for any advice
    George

Choose both layers (click on one and hold down the CTL key to click on the second), then go to the layers drop down menu, and choose 'Merge Selected'.
    OR
Choose both layers as above, go to layers drop down menu, and choose 'Collect in New Layer'.
Not sure this is what you're wanting to do .... if not, there may be another way.

  • How to convert PNG image to Vertor Image to make font on Mac

    Hi Mac People,
I like to create a set of font, and I have made them in a image editing tool, I have FontForge downloaded but decide to use it to convert instead direct design them inside.
So now I don't know how to convert the PNG image to vector image required by the FontForge, I read some post mentioned Ubuntu has utilities to convert, but I'm not sure OS X has that function too.
Could anyone let me know how to convert PNG so I can create my fonts?
If PNG can't, the software can export TIFF or jpeg or similar.
Please help me, I need make them this few day.

  • Inserting PNG images in my document makes text bolder

I created a simple InDesign file using text and JPG images. So far all fine.
But on pages where I use PNG images instead of JPG images all text on the page is slightly bolder as if some sort of overprint would apply to all text boxes, even the once placed on the Master Page.
I checked all overprint settings, it's not it.

    That is indeed the problem.
Any ohter workaround than flattening the images in Photoshop?

  • Colour shifts when merging layers

We are Fine Art Printers using PS4 on Windows XP and 7. Because we have to proof individual colours and individual areas we often have over 20 adjustment layers and masks on images greater than 1 metre square. The masks get hugely complicated and the images sizes are often well over 1GB. Normally we would take a Snapshot(?) Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E as we get an area correct, then move on to proof the next. We have an image with  dark blue/black cloud and noticed the image lost contrast and colours subtly changed when we did this. We have tried flattening layers, merging visible layers, merging down adjustment layers and even saving as a JPEG, but the colours change slightly each time layers are merged.  A global change like Levels is not an option for fine art images. We need to simplify the images and reduce the memory used for printing.
    Can anyone help?

I just had the same thing happen on a psb file (also fine art). It does not appear to be display interpolation or another familiar issue. I compare previous versions of the file that contain the correct color with the flattened, incorrect version, and then go back in the history to a point before flattening and make a corrective color move that approximates a good final result when flattened. This workaround does not solve the problem exactly; I suspect PS discards some data in the flattening process of large files. This is happening in CS6, 2.5 gb, 16-bit RGB psb file with a Windows 7 OS. Hope you solved your particular problem.

  • Usingservlets to create PNG images are not transparent in internet explorer

    11/01/2007
I have used servlets to dynamically create a PNG image:
    response.setContentType("image/png");
    image = new BufferedImage(maxWidth, maxHeight, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
    Graphics g2d = image.creatGraphics();
    g2d.setColor(new Color(128,0,250,128));
    g2d.draw......
    ServletOutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
    ImageIO.write(image, "png", out);
Works perfectly with transparency for Firefox. However in Internet Explorer
it does not have any transparency, and also has a gray background as shown
in http://www.apl.jhu.edu/~vnguyen/pngInIEbug.JPG. The image is simply the
call to the servlet, which returns the PNG file. Tried using the fix presented in
    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bobosola/index.htm without success. The
overall program will produce several images layered on top of each other
so transparency is key. Please help.

Either put more research into the IE fix so you can make it work, or switch to using GIF images which will work.

  • Losing masks when merging layers

    Hey guys,
So I have been trying to learn to be as non destructive as possible... one problem Ive recently had is that when I try to merge layers, I will lose the mask that was on one of the layers. How do I prevent this? :/
    Cheers!!

One small note:  Every selection specifically is 8 bits/channel no matter what the document depth.  I say this because selection masks are always provided to plug-ins in 8 bits/channel format.
So my point is that if you're editing deep (e.g., 16 bits/channel) image data, and whatever workflow you're using uses a selection as part of it, you will have quantized the data to 8 bits at some point.
You can prove this to yourself if you're skeptical...  Make a radial pure grayscale gradient in a 16 bits/channel document.  Then control-click on one of the color channels to make it a selection, and Save the selection in a channel.  Now Copy the data from that channel and paste it over the original gradient as a new RGB layer.  Set it to Difference blending and greatly enhance the brightness of the differences...

  • How to merge Layers without losing layer mask?

I'm trying to save a file that looks great in Photoshop and preserve it as a PNG. I'll create the image, simply "merge layers" and lose the transparency of it. How do I get my PNG to look like it does in photoshop.
The red background show through in photoshop originally...but then after "merge layers" or saving the PNG every way possible (or so I think)... the degree of transparency isn't preserved.
Below looks great. (red bleeds through nicely, good transparency)
Now doesn't look so good. (all i did was merge layers and red doesn't bleed through properly anymore, same result when saving as png)
I'm a beginner with photoshop, so keep that in mind with any solution reccomendations.
    Thanks

You see your first image before you merged everything down? From that point you just go File>save as>   then save it as  Outsource.png or what ever name you choose. you need to save it all seperated as it looks in picture one.
If you are still having issues, another way to do it is
    edit>copy merged
File>new  choose the default as it should be your image size by default.
edit>paste.  it should look just like your masked image only not masked. Then save it as a PNG.
