Does migration asst copy entire directory? or just relevant files?

hello all.
I'm about to reinstall tiger to a clean drive. I'm wondering that if I use the migration assistant, if it will actually copy over the entire disk? including irrelevant files [orphaned prefs or temporary caches for example], or if it's a cleaner process which only brings the relevant data.
I guess I'm trying to figure out if it makes more sense just to reinstall everything , the apps, recreate the user folders and bring the library items etc over manually.
also when it brings everything over, does it just copy the directory? or does it do any optimization +/ defragmenting as it passes over?
thanks very much everyone.

I'm wondering that if I use the migration assistant, if it will actually copy over the entire disk? including irrelevant files [orphaned prefs or temporary caches for example], or if it's a cleaner process which only brings the relevant data.The migration assistant has absolutely no way of knowing about "orphaned prefs" so those will be copied. Temporary caches are not copied.also when it brings everything over, does it just copy the directory? or does it do any optimization +/ defragmenting as it passes over?The copy is not bit wise, so defragmentation does occur as the files are written to the destination hard drive.

  • Copy entire directory using JSCH

    Hi,
    Have someday tried to copy entire directory to remote host using Jcraft's Jsch? Do they support something like scp -rp? I couldn't find it in their example. I guess, I'll have to copy all the files recursively?
    Does anybody know?
    Thanks,

    The files you are uploading are on the client computer.
    ColdFusion has
    *no* interaction with the client computer at all. All
    communications are
    between client and WEB SERVER. File uploads are handled by
    the client
    computer, using the provisions of the HTTP protocol, which -
    as implemented
    by a web browser - only allows for single files to be
    uploaded, via each
    file input control on a form.
    If you want multiple files to be uploaded from a client
    computer using a
    single control, you need to use something other than a web
    browser (as
    suggested by someone else: some manner of applet, perhaps
    embedded in an
    HTML document).
    The applet will pass the data to the web server, and if the
    request is for
    a mime type that the web server has been configured to pass
    to ColdFusion
    (usually a CFM or a CFC file), then the web server will pass
    the request to
    ColdFusion, which will deal with it however you tell it to.
    The problem isn't getting the files to CF; it's getting them
    to the web
    server in the first place. CF's got nothing to do with your
    problem (or,
    intrinsically, its solution).

    Ok..so I want to copy the entire html directory out of flash from a 3750 stack. How do I do the entire contents of the directory without doing on file at a time? Can you copy an entire directory to tftp?

    you can create a .TAR file with all the required files and then download the one .TAR file from the router.

  • RubyGems problem: Does migration assistant copy across xcode & Rubygems?

    Migration assistant has finished copying across my data and I'm now trying to get my Rails apps running again (I was hoping that Migration Assistant would do the biz with RubyGems, etc). Pretend you're in charge of writing Migration Assistant for a minute. How are you going to magically know everything about every piece of software everyone could possibly install in various locations on their system? Would you even bother trying, or would you focus on moving the things that most normal people care about and just assume that anyone who knew how to install their own stuff on the command line can probably figure out how to do it again?

  • Does Migration Asst thwart a truly "clean" install?

    I decided to do a clean install this time when 10.6 was released because one lookinside my preferences folder and libraries found a swarm of unknown, ancient or irrelevant support files. I want these gone. No amount of AppZapper will clear this stuff out if you've deleted these apps before the advent of AppZapper, etc.
    I backed up my MBP's internal HD and erased then installed Snow Leopard. After realizing how much serial-number-entering I would have to do, I tried the migration assistant. What I didn't realize is that MA will pass on all the old Application Support/Preferences files you've always had whether they are relevant to your current applications or not. In short, the Migration ***'t install was a partial failure, with loads of permissions challenges (I found a KB on this, something to do with your user becoming a Standard instead of Admin user in the transfer), certain apps didn't copy and the system doesn't feel any cleaner than if I had simply Upgrade-installed. mail, iTunes and Address Book were all affected, though now fixed. This doesn't inspire confidence.
    For a truly "clean" install, do I really have to go through the measures we did in OS 9 and earlier, meaning, literally download all your installers (or get your CDs handy), find support files that contain databases (Yojimbo, address book, etc), move them manually and all that? I'd thought we'd moved on from this.
    Do any of those apps I've seen clean out things like old prefs and support files you're no longer using? I'm talking about OmniDiskSweeper or I believe Aladdin had one as well. I use Onyx for caches but not for all the other detritus.

    Truly clean is a waste of time.
    But the answer is yes, given it gives you the ability to install applications or your user home folder from an old installation. Your home folder contains preferences and data for nearly every application you run, which is incredibly helpful. Of course, if any of them are corrupt, and you don't know how to fix them, then Migration Assistant will bring them over.

  • Does TM back up entire disk or just the Mac drive and not the Win drive?

    If Boot Camp has partitioned your HD into a Mac and a Windows partition, does Time Machine back up both? What if you are running a virtual machine like VMFusion? When Boot Camp alone is running, the Windows files show up in Finder; so I would imagine they would be backed up. However, they do not show in Finder when VM Fusion is running. Does it matter (i.e., are they backed up or not)?

    TimeMachine can backup everything on the Mac partition of your HD (it includes VMWare Fusion files)

  • How do I copy the directory structure without the files?

    I have a folder for Expenses and subfolders under that with expense types such as Meals, Travel, Equipment, etc.  I call this folder Expenses 2011.
    I would like to create a folder for Expenses 2012 with all of the same sub folders but don't want to copy the files that are there since I would like them empty for the new year.

    Well, you could try writing an AppleScript for that. You can search at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads to see if you can find a utility that does it. I did a quick check and did not find anything.

    here's my script that I use to copy 11 TB of file server contents:

    /* Server Support Specialist */

    Hi,
    Based on my tests, inherited permissions will not be copied using robocopy.exe.
    That’s because that after we copy or move an objects to another volume, the object inherits the permissions of its new parent folder.
    My suggestion for you is to disable the inheritance on corresponding subfolders, and Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object. After that, those permissions can be copied.

  • How to upload entire Directory / Multiple Files

    Dear Friends,
    I am trying to design a very user friendly servlet page for uploading multiple files from a PC to Unix server. I need some suggestion on what java library or ftp client to use for this.
    Details:
    There are about 8 files to upload (sized ranging from 200kb to 60MB, The files are a mix of binary and ascii data). I don't want the user to have to click on the browse form button on the webpage 8 times to select the files. In fact all of the files will reside in a directory with a barcode as the name.
    I would like to have the user simply select the directory and submit the form. I will then have a parser that is automatically invoked to parse these files, verify the formats and use the data to populate the next page that is shown to the user for data confirmation.
    The hardest part for me is figuring out what tool to use for the upload section. Any suggestion on what tool (FTP client library, etc.) would be highly appreciated.
    In the forum I found lots of examples for uploading single files but none for uploading entire directory or just multiple files. Am I asking the wrong question? Are there any example out there that I can look?
    I do not favor using a full blown ftp tool on the side because I think it increases the chance for user errors. (miss selecting a file, wrong directory, ascii vs binary).
    Thanks,
    Wayne Chen
    [email protected]

    There are two ways to upload multiple files:
    1. Package them all into a zip file on the client, upload that file, unpackage them on the server.
    2. Upload one file at a time.
    If you're asking about servlets then you can't do number 1 because you can't access the files on the client. And you've said you don't want to have the client upload the files one at a time. From this it follows that you need some logic on the client that can either zip and upload the files, or upload the files one at a time, without requiring user intervention. The Java form of client-side logic from a website is an applet. In this case you would have to sign the applet, since an applet can't access the client's file system without the client's permission.

  • Does migration assistant move files or copy them?

    I'm running Yosemite on a separate partition. I want to copy some of my information from 10.6.8, but I want to leave 10.6.8 intact, as it is still (and will remain for quite some time) my primary operating system. Does migration assistant move the information, or copy it?

    It will copy info and won't delete anything from the originating drive. If you are just looking to copy some files, log back into the 10.6.8 and copy them to the user desktop account of the other drive.
    If you are looking to migrate a user account, be aware that the account name will need to be different than the one you are currently using in Yosemite.

  • Copying an entire directory

    Hi
    What's the easiest way to copy an entire directory (including sub-directories) from one place to another? Is there a convenience method for doing this?
    Thanks.

    If there was a simple standard Java API method for doing this, the Apache Commons IO project wouldn't have bothered with implementing the function into their library.
    What you could do is:
    1) Bundle the library with your code, the Apache License allows this.
    2) Have a look at the library's source code and extract the pieces you need for your own project. The Apache License allows this as well without requiring you to put your own project under a compatible license (the Apache License isn't the GPL after all)
    Here is some of the code directly from the org.apache.commons.io.FileUtil source:
        private static void doCopyDirectory(File srcDir, File destDir, FileFilter filter,
                boolean preserveFileDate, List<String> exclusionList) throws IOException {
            if (destDir.exists()) {
                if (destDir.isDirectory() == false) {
                    throw new IOException("Destination '" + destDir + "' exists but is not a directory");
            } else {
                if (destDir.mkdirs() == false) {
                    throw new IOException("Destination '" + destDir + "' directory cannot be created");
                if (preserveFileDate) {
                    destDir.setLastModified(srcDir.lastModified());
            if (destDir.canWrite() == false) {
                throw new IOException("Destination '" + destDir + "' cannot be written to");
            // recurse
            File[] files = filter == null ? srcDir.listFiles() : srcDir.listFiles(filter);
            if (files == null) {  // null if security restricted
                throw new IOException("Failed to list contents of " + srcDir);
            for (File file : files) {
                File copiedFile = new File(destDir, file.getName());
                if (exclusionList == null || !exclusionList.contains(file.getCanonicalPath())) {
                    if (file.isDirectory()) {
                        doCopyDirectory(file, copiedFile, filter, preserveFileDate, exclusionList);
                    } else {
                        doCopyFile(file, copiedFile, preserveFileDate);
        private static void doCopyFile(File srcFile, File destFile, boolean preserveFileDate) throws IOException {
            if (destFile.exists() && destFile.isDirectory()) {
                throw new IOException("Destination '" + destFile + "' exists but is a directory");
            FileInputStream fis = null;
            FileOutputStream fos = null;
            FileChannel input = null;
            FileChannel output = null;
            try {
                fis = new FileInputStream(srcFile);
                fos = new FileOutputStream(destFile);
                input  = fis.getChannel();
                output = fos.getChannel();
                long size = input.size();
                long pos = 0;
                long count = 0;
                while (pos < size) {
                    count = (size - pos) > FIFTY_MB ? FIFTY_MB : (size - pos);
                    pos += output.transferFrom(input, pos, count);
            } finally {
                IOUtils.closeQuietly(output);
                IOUtils.closeQuietly(fos);
                IOUtils.closeQuietly(input);
                IOUtils.closeQuietly(fis);
            if (srcFile.length() != destFile.length()) {
                throw new IOException("Failed to copy full contents from '" +
                        srcFile + "' to '" + destFile + "'");
            if (preserveFileDate) {
                destFile.setLastModified(srcFile.lastModified());
        }As you can see, the library isn't doing anything different than recursively traversing the directories.
    3) Do it on your own, but that requires traversing every directory and their children.

    My Photoshop CS 5 has some strange actions when I copy a portion of a photo using the clone stamp  to transfer to another part of the image. It carries the entire layer (not just the stamps selection) across the screen and I cannot place it where I need to. It appears as if I selected the entire layer on purpose (which I did not)
    The below items appeared when I opened Photoshop CS 5:
    “Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled G & U enhancements. Check the video card malfunctions website for latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.”
    (I believe this started after the automatically updated Windows was applied. It was coincident with the before mentioned problem . . . but I don’t really know if it had anything to do with it. )

    For the Clone Stamp problem, check the Clone Source panel and Clipped is probably unchecked.
    If so, check Clipped and see if that makes a difference.
    (Window>Clone Source)
    As to the video card problem:
    Which version of windows are you using?
    What is the make and model of your graphics card?
    Do you know which update windows installed?

    Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

    It would also be extremely helpful to those trying to help you if you complted your Profile so we at least know what iMac and version of OS X is installed. Click Your Stuff in the upper right then click Profile and complete the necessary fields including what part of the planet you're located.

  • IPhoto can not find the original photo, does iPhoto copy the photo or just make a thumbnail?

    Hi,
    I'm scanning and putting all of my (paper) photos into my computer and then into iPhoto, tagging them, and doing all the time consuming things necessary to build a good library.
    I've tried to open a few of the events and look at the photos I put in but I get an error that iPhoto can not find the original photo.  When I put a photo into iPhoto does the program only make a thumbnail copy with a link to the original, or does it actually copy the photo into the library?  I'm thinking the former.  Because I have a Time Machine backup, a hard copy, and (presumably) a copy in iPhoto, I have been deleting the photos AFTER putting them into iPhoto.  Do I need to keep the photos I put in iPhoto on my computer?  Will I need to go into TM and restore them?  Will I loose the information like Faces, Places, Keywords, if I do?
    Thank you much,
    I'm working with 9.1.2

    I have exactly the same problem except my photo is named "L1000093.jpg" and it's been there for a year now, but suddenly, when I wanted to view it in it's album, ("Favorite" which has been there for a year too), it says "The photo P1010311.jpg cannot be found"!!!  What the heck is going on?  So I canceled, went back to the album, clicked on L1000093, clicked "show event", went over to Event, clicked "reveal in finder" and there it is, iPhoto Library/Master/blah blah blah... L1000093.jpg!
    Where the hack did that P1010311.jpg came from?  Sure I have that photo, but it's in a completely different event and a different album!  What's is iPhoto 11 / Lion / iTunes 10.5.3(3) up to?
    So I threw L1000093jpg into the trash, went into Lightroom, find the original, re-export it, load it again into iPhoto, added it again to the album (favorite), and guess what?  I just did all those and the same "The bloody photo cannot be found" message popped up and when I go to finder, there it is.
    This is a bug.  It's been a bug since 2006 as far as I can remember.  And Apple had never done a complete fix.  It's an if thing!
    And the most frustrating part:  Althought they call this an Apple forum and you have to sign in to participate, I have never seen one Apple software guy here saying "this is what to do", just us victims helping each other and many non-Apple folks guessing to the best of their ability to comfort us.
    Oh, toys are toys.  I sometimes wonder if Steve had fought so hard yet the cancer in Apple actually won!

  • Why is it that at times my ipad does't download the entire item in mail just the title?

    why is it that at times my ipad does't download the entire item in mail at times just the title?  Yet on the listing of mail I have received there is 3 lines of content and none on the item itself.  Furthermore when i look on my macbook pro the entire mail item has been downloaded.  This happens only on occasion.  I then try to download mail again and nothing happens and I make certain my internet is working.  Why should I get more content in the listing of mail I have received then in the mail item itself?  Thank you

    Try closing the Mail app completely and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
