Does Mountain Lion Restore Scroll Arrows

I am really sorry I ugraded(?) to Lion from OS-X 10.6. Losing colored sidebar icons in both te finder and application file open/save windows was really a big problem for me. Also, the removal of scroll arrows from scroll bars is a big disappointment. Also, file open/save windows take a long time to load the folders and devices available. I can't imagine why Apple is going backward on this stuff. I guess the next step is to release black and white retima displays?
Anyway, does anyone know if the scroll arrows and colored icons have been restored in Mountain Lion?
Thanks - Bill

You've got it in one. Macs built their name on usability and lived in the shadow of the utterly unusable, unstable but ubiquitous windows-driven PCs.
 seem to have learned from that that market domination revolves around building systems with crap features that nevertheless have some popular appeal rather than focussing on making great systems. The next thing to be lost will be durability. My old macs never died, but I suspect either through hardware or software obsolescence, we will all be forced to upgrade on a 3-yr cycle before long.
What happened to the old mac ethos of durability, usability and aesthetic beauty? It died with the release of Lion 10.7 last July.

  • How to restore scroll arrows?

Is there any way to restore scroll arrows to scrollbars in OS X Lion and later?
I know that there is a way to always show scrollbars via the system control panel, but I fear that scroll arrows are a thing of the past.
If you have a text document that is quite long the scroll arrows allowed me to move up and down by a single line. Now, I can drag the thumb close to where I want to be and try to "gesture" down a single line - the result is that I end up moving down a couple of pages. I then try to go up and over shoot again. Quite frustrating.
    <facetious example>
When presented with the EULA and I try to read it, I would like to move down a line or two but cannot and end up jumping a page or more. Then I'm asked if I consent to this agreement - How can I say "yes" to something that I am unable to read because major portions of the text are unreachable?
    </facetious example>
If Apple monitors these forums I'd like to request the return of scroll arrows. Most of the time they may not be needed, but in those cases that they are, they are missed.

There is a workaround, but it requires 3rd party software:
Download a utility capable of executing a scroll wheel simulation macro, triggered by a keyboard shortcut.
I'm using Keyboard Maestro which is an incredibly powerful tool in its own right.
I've created four global macros, each one simulating Scroll Wheel Up/Down/Left/Right.
The scrolling value can be set as low as 1 pixel per keystroke. (I'm fine with 5…)
Each macro gets a global keyboard shortcut:
    ⌃⇧⌘↑
    ⌃⇧⌘↓
    ⌃⇧⌘←
    ⌃⇧⌘→
(These modifiers are optional, but over the years I've developed the habit to use ⌃⇧⌘ strictly for global shortcuts active in all applications. This habit avoids possible conflicts with internal application shortcuts, because this modifier combination is rather uncommon.)
To get contiunous scrolling while holding the keys down, make sure the hot key trigger setting is "is down", not the default "is pressed".
Also note that the pointer must be over the affected window – same as if you'd be using a real scroll wheel – for the shortcuts to work.
It works in all application windows which support scroll wheel input, including text forms like this one I'm posting this reply.
    Hope that helps

  • Why does mountain lion "bunch up" all my microsoft office documents that I have open when I hit f3? When I had snow leopard for example, if i had 4 or 5 different microsoft office documents open at the same time I could hit f3 and easily pick one of them

Why does mountain lion "bunch up" all my microsoft office documents that I have open when I hit f3? When I had snow leopard for example, if i had 4 or 5 different microsoft office documents open at the same time I could hit f3 and easily pick one of them.
Notice how in the photo, I can't identify which MS office document I would like to switch too. Perhaps since the Dashboard and Desktop windows are at the top of my screen now Apple doesn't let you have all the applications take up the full screen and be sized individually so that you can have a better idea on what to pick.
I like the idea of grouping to an extent... If you have a bunch of random things it was hard for me to decifer between what was safari, chrome, or word. But now that they grouped them like this, if you have multiple pages of one program running, you can't switch between those pages easily like before.

If I wanted to open any of my Applework documents I had to open them one at a time and resave them with pages. This could take weeks.I have 1000s of apple work documents.
You don't have to open and re-save every AppleWorks document you have right now. Just wait till you need one, then do it. The documents aren't going anywhere.
Am I dealing with Microsoft? This was a BIG surprise to me that Apple would release an OS without testing all programs.
Frankly, it is not Apple's responsibility to ensure compatibiltiy with every piece of software available for OS X. That is the responsibility of the software vendor. Lion has been available to developers for several months before it's release, so Microtek had plenty of time to update their software. Yet they did not. How is that Apple's fault? I think Apple was very generous to give you a refund for Lion.
I'm not trying to belittle your frustration but I do think your ire is misplaced.

On average how long does mountain lion take to download from the app store?

Always keep an eye on 'More like this', the column to the right of your initial post.    You will often find answers and direct leads to your questions there.
In fact it relates to your ISP and the download speeds you have.   I believe it is 4GB in size.

how long does mountain lion take to download and where does it say how much it has left mine just says downloading ?

It's totally dependent on your broadband speed.
It took me about 45 minutes to download, but I have a reasonably fast connection.
It will often say in the purchased pane of the Mac App Store how much longer it will take.

  • Does Mountain Lion support trim for SSDs? ...

I've been reading various forum posts and I find conflicting info. I did se several references to a tool called 'trim enabler.'
I have a late 2012 Mac Mini with Mountain Lion and installed a Samsung 830 SSD.
System Report shows that trim is not enabled for the drive. Does Mountain Lion support trim for these drives? How important is it to enable it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Apple does not support the 3rd party drives.  To enable it (without installing another software package), you can visit the website:
    http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/
I ran the series of commands on my Mac Pro and it did enable TRIM.
the webpage even has a backup/back-out procedure.
Without TRIM, my computer was running extremely slowly.  After enabling TRIM, my computer ran substancially faster.

  • Does Mountain Lion support Word 2008?

Does Mountain Lion support MicroSoft Word 2008?

I had completely uninstalled Office '08 on my old computer running Snow Leopard and had already made the switch to Office '11 when I got my new MBP with Lion. Since I used Setup Assistant, everything migrated well and I've had no trouble with ML and '11.
However, if you visit the MS Office for Mac user forums you will note that many users of '08 - and Word '08 in particular - are/were having problems with Lion and, now, with ML. I would suggest that your wife just customize '11 to her liking - shortcuts can always be modified (well, most of the time).
There are instructions on how to completely uninstall '08 here.
