Does Mountain Lion scan incoming email in Mac Mail?

I've been using Avast for my Mac but I had to turn off the Mail Shield in order to recieve mail.  I was wondering if Mountain Lion has any security measures for Mac Mail?  Does it scan incomging email?
New to the Mac world sorry for my ignorance, I'm learning:)
Thanks!

Technically, it sort of scans e-mail attachments. If you receive something that can be executed on a Mac - an application, a Unix shell script, etc - then it will be scanned when you try to open it. If it is one of a few known Mac trojans, you will be prevented from opening it. If it is Windows malware of some kind, you won't be able to open it, but you also won't be warned either.

  • Why does Mountain Lion triggers front fan in Mac Pro?

Hi all, this is my first visit to this community and I hope there won't be much more .
I bought a new SSD drive for my Mac Pro (early 2008). I had to install it from my Macbook Pro because Leopard in the Mac Pro wouldn't allow me to.
Neither I could perform a bootable USB clean install since the Mac Pro didn't show the device in the drive selection splash screen.
Then I put the SSD back into the Mac Pro and eureka, everything worked just fine. After about 30 seconds with the desktop in front of me, the front fan of the Mac triggered like if it was a constant reboot. However, the system worked just fine with no trouble but the annoying noise of the fan.
It's an OS related problem because this doesn't happen in Leopard. Any idea what went wrong?

Faulty installation.  Why could you not install the SSD in the Mac Pro running Leopard? Why are you running Leopard in the Mac Pro instead of upgrading it to Mountain Lion? Try doing it this way. Put the SSD into the Mac Pro.
    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your SSD (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. After formatting finishes quit DU and return to the installer. Install Leopard onto the SSD.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • Create Incoming Mail Rule Based on Embedded HTML in Emails in Mac Mail?

I want to filter a selection of incoming emails in MAC MAIL that have an image embedded into the email. The image is the only thing that will distinguish the emails apart and so I'm wondering if it is possible to filter based on embedded html in an email? If so how? Thanks!

There are no embedded images in HTML mail; it's an attachment. If you want to filter out messages with attachments of one or more types, you need to create a Rule that looks for that criteria and then transfers those messages to your desired location.
For example, if you wanted to filter out messages that contained .gif images, you'd setup a Rule where "Any Attachment Name" "Ends with" ".gif" and then choose what you want to happen to those messages.
And the program is Mail; not MAC MAIL.

Apple has been known to make changes between the GM and public releases. It's rare, but it has happened. In addition, RoaringApps also does not test these apps themselves; they rely on user reports which may or may not be accurate or current. So while RA is a useful guide, it's not definitive. Only the app's developer should be relied upon for official information on compatibility.
We should not discuss the GM release here, by the way, since that's still under NDA.

How will mountain Lion affect my office for Mac 2011

I have been using Office for Mac 2011 for almost a year now and the issue started immediately after doing the upgrade.
When I start Outlook I can see that it takes 1 minute plus to set up the identity.
When it finally runs it is very slow and no fun to use. It seems that Outlook is using very few resources when I look at the activity monitor.
Overall it seems that my IMac has become slower than before upgrading to 10.8.
I do not have support with MSFT anymore and I do hope that somebody does report this issue to MSFT.
To me it seems to be very clear a result of the upgrade.
    Hope that helps.

  • Does Mountain Lion support TRIM for 3rd party SSD's? (I don't mean TRIM enabler)

I was planning on buying an SSD and doing clean install of Mountain Lion. I went to Mac Rumors and few other forums but they all gave simple answer like 'yes', not even verfying wether they're using Apple SSD's or 3rd party ones. I'm certain that it does support TRIM for Apple SSD's  http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z451/yamanote/ScreenShot2012-06-29at30030AM. png)

how long does mountain lion take to download and where does it say how much it has left mine just says downloading ?

It's totally dependent on your broadband speed.
It took me about 45 minutes to download, but I have a reasonably fast connection.
It will often say in the purchased pane of the Mac App Store how much longer it will take.

  • Does Mountain Lion support trim for SSDs? ...

I've been reading various forum posts and I find conflicting info. I did se several references to a tool called 'trim enabler.'
I have a late 2012 Mac Mini with Mountain Lion and installed a Samsung 830 SSD.
System Report shows that trim is not enabled for the drive. Does Mountain Lion support trim for these drives? How important is it to enable it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Apple does not support the 3rd party drives.  To enable it (without installing another software package), you can visit the website:
    http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/
I ran the series of commands on my Mac Pro and it did enable TRIM.
the webpage even has a backup/back-out procedure.
Without TRIM, my computer was running extremely slowly.  After enabling TRIM, my computer ran substancially faster.

  • HT1529 just loaded Mountain lion, went to about this mac to see if worked, won't open (about this mac)

just loaded Mountain lion, went to about this mac to see if worked, won't open (about this mac)  About this Mac is listed, nothing happens when I click on it.

I opened System Profiler by launching it from Utilities.
It comes up with a different name to the admin name though. Maybe that's why it won't open from "About this Mac"?
For example, the computer's name when I set it up using the USB installer stick is "Harry Potter".
But the old MBA that I had was named "js".
When I install programs, it comes up with "Harry Potter", put in password.
However, when I look up the System Profiler information using Utilities, it comes up with "js's MacBook Air (2)".
    Does that matter?
Is the name thing causing the problem with the "About This Mac" not opening?
I am really confused about all of this.
The information in the System Profiler is about the newer MBA.
Should I just not worry about this problem? And just open it up from Utilities if I need to look up System Profiler information?

  • Does Mountain Lion support Word 2008?

Does Mountain Lion support MicroSoft Word 2008?

I had completely uninstalled Office '08 on my old computer running Snow Leopard and had already made the switch to Office '11 when I got my new MBP with Lion. Since I used Setup Assistant, everything migrated well and I've had no trouble with ML and '11.
However, if you visit the MS Office for Mac user forums you will note that many users of '08 - and Word '08 in particular - are/were having problems with Lion and, now, with ML. I would suggest that your wife just customize '11 to her liking - shortcuts can always be modified (well, most of the time).
There are instructions on how to completely uninstall '08 here.
