Does music have to be stored on my PC in iTunes after downloading to iPod?

I restored my PC because it was running slowly and had some error messages. I saved all my son's music from iTunes (burned it to a CD) and reinstalled iTunes. When he connected his iPod, and opened iTunes, all the music on his iPod was deleted. Does all music have to be stored in iTunes after downloading to the iPod, or can you just use iTunes to add new songs? If so, what setting tells the iPod to keep the music already stored to it?<<br>

The default iPod option is to automatically update to the iTunes library. Sounds like it got updated with a blank library.
If the iPod is set for manual update, it doesn't do that.

Sync your iPhone to iTunes to copy the iTunes purchases to the computer.
Or iTunes prefs > Store.
Tick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases then click the Cloud icon after the song names to download them.

Error 1004, 1013, 1638, 3014, 3194: These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Check security software and ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow these stepsfor assistance with security software.
Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow theadvanced iTunes Store troubleshooting steps to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information."
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

i have lost many of my music files and some video files from i movie projects,after downloading OSX 10.9 Mavericks .My previous Original i movie has lost some also. The projects just have a green bar where the music files were. The system says cannot locte missing file.

It has the error range of 3000's which states
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

You will need to Upgrade to Snow Leopard to get a Compatible version of iTunes to Sync your Device.

After downloading the iPod display reads No Music

Please help...I'm going crazy reading support info and forums but none of them specify the problem I have with my 3rd gen Nano. First of all I have never been prompted to register...just don't get any recognition when I connect to iTunes. I have connected to Real Player and downloaded my own CDs which I played back through my iPod. Then I tried to load another CD - well Real Player said I was successful but the iPod says no music and indeed no sound at all comes out. After several times of deleting and downloading again, re-installing set-up for iPod and iTunes I am no further ahead.

I may have misunderstood, but the iTunes folder will only be there if you have copied it from your old computer to the iPod first. If you no longer have the old computer see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device,
