Does my Battery Really Need Replacing?

I have a MacBook 13" (early 2008) that I bought sometime in the middle of 2008 and so is about four years old.
It works perfectly well.  The battery still only takes a couple of hours to charge and I'm still getting four to five hours of life from it.  I use it on battery power frequently and try not to leave it on the mains too long (after charging).  I also calibrate it about once a month.
However despite all that, I'm told via my battery icon that my battery needs to be replaced soon.  The only strange behaviour is that it doesn't always know it's fully charged.  If I charge from near empty or empty (especially during calibration), it reaches 99% charge in the usual time, but then stays there permanently (with orange charge light).  But if I take out the power and put it straight back in again, it instantly registers as 100% fully charged and I get a green light.  Other than this, I haven't noticed any other unusual behaviour, and as I stated before I'm still getting excellent battery life out of it.
So my question is simply, do I really need to worry?
Thanks.

Check out this article on preserving your battery for as long as possible:

I think I saw somewhere that you should change your battery every 2 to 4 years.

  • Does iPhone 6 really need a screen protector?

Does the iPhone 6 really need a screen protector if the phone is in a case?

I put one on my iPad 2, largely cause it's an expensive toy and I want to keep it in good shape. I like knowing that if my niece plays 'mad birds' and gets grubby little fingerprints on it I am simply cleaning off a sheet of plastic, not the screen. I consider it an investment against the potential resell value whenever i replace it.
Like the others have said, personal choice.
I'd think if your device never leaves the living room table and is only used by adults in a controlled surrounding, then you probably have no need. But if you're carrying it around, using it anywhere, potentially sharing it with others then it may be a good idea.

  • The music sound from my i pod is muffled through my headphone.. does the headphone jack need replacing

Iv had my ipod for few years.. now the sound through the headphone is muffled i brought new ones but the sound is still the same.. does the headphne jack need changing and how much will it cost ?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Have a message on startup," low internal battery". Need replacement and instructions on replacing

HP Pavilion dv7-1127d, Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition.  Message on start up "low battery, internal".  Need replacement part identifcation and replacement instructions.

Sounds like your iCloud backup isn't happening.
Check Settings / icloud / storage & backup.  See if you have enough available storage.  If you don't, you will need to purchase additional storage (First 5GB is free), or alter your backup settings to free up space.  Camera Roll is the biggest offender.

  • Does iPhone 4S really need a case?

So I just bought an iPhone 4S, and I'm wondering if it really needs a case, or a screen protector, or both. It just looks so good without it.

No.  A case will provide protection. How much depends on the case.  A screen protector is supposed to provide protection against scratches.  There is a debate on if this is necessary.  Personnally I use a holster case and a clear plastic case that surrounds the back and sides.  I also use a screen protector because it seems to reduce fingerprint smudges on the screen.

  • Does the iPad battery ever need replacing?

blank screen...tried shut down and restart and no go

Not sure about your blank screen or what may be causing it. But to answer your original question posed in the subject, yes, the battery in an iPad will eventually wear out. You'll then have to send your iPad to Apple for a fix.
If the Restart didn't help your iPad and you are sure you have charged your battery at least overnight (making sure that the outlet and charger are good) then I suggest taking your iPad to an Apple store for a consultation. Make an appointment before going.

  • How long does your battery REALLY last?

I think my ipod is fit for the graveyard now... it's not being recognized by the computer. I've tried restoring and it'll work for about 5 minutes and then screw up again.
Anyways thinking I may need to get a new iPod. The only ipod's available with a big capacity are the the iPod videos. Apple's website advertises up to 14 hours of battery life. My friend who just got one says he gets a maximum of 4 hours and this is JUST listening to music.
Is this true? Cause if it is, I really don't think it is worth the money. My 4G iPod gets about 10 hours, I would hate to think the battery life has gotten worst as they've "upgraded" the iPods.
Please let me know how much battery life you typically get while listening to music.

If your friend gets a maximum of 4 hours, he is not JUST listening to music and if so, there is a problem with the battery.
    Copied from About iPod Batteries.
Maximum Battery Life: iPod can play up to 20 hours, iPod nano can play up to 14 hours and iPod shuffle can play up to 12 hours on a full charge at original capacity. Apple runs a number of tests for battery life using songs encoded in various formats, including MP3, AAC and songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store. The songs are played continuously through a playlist without interruption, with backlight and equalizer off, using factory default settings.
Doing anything with an iPod besides listening to music continuously without interruption (which causes the hard drive to be accessed more often or constantly), without backlight and the iPod's equalizer off will cause the battery to drain faster.
Refer your friend to How to accurately determine your iPod battery life for instructions on running an iPod battery test.
If the test results in 4 hours of battery life and the iPod is still under warranty, he needs to send it in to Apple for a battery replacement.

  • Does a DSL really need a ISP?

I have a Login/pass for Qwest and for MSN. Do I need MSN to access the net?
I've only logged in once on MSN during setup. My modem uses the qwest login to connect not MSN's. I would like to drop MSN to save a few $$.

Does Qwest provide an e-mail account? That's the only thing I can think of that
MSN is providing that you might not get fro myour DSL provider. If you're happy with Yahoo mail or Gmail, then all the better.
Unless you're really hooked on MSN "content", your DSL connection should
    suffice.

  • Does my card (8800gt) need replacement?

I've a 2008 8-core with an Nvidia 8800gt. I've noticed when in Photoshop CS5, I go to Convert to Profile and the preview goes weird, showing faces with an exaggerated  red/magenta cast, when I click OK everything looks fine – so it's just the preview thats off – I also have a distinct flicker when converting.
This is with a 26" NEC LCD2690 monitor.
Someone on a design forum suggested that the Nvidia doesn't have enough horsepower, is it time to upgrade? I've read of the green sparkles on another thread, with the 5770, is this relevant to the Apple monitors only? (I guess the 5770 is the only option, yes?).
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I can see that the full charge capacity is too small for a Mac battery or, at least, for a recent Mac. However, I think that OS X is displaying that you have check the battery because its capacity has decreased a lot.
In this case, you can continue using the MacBook Pro until the battery stops working at all or because it doesn't meet your requirements of using the battery. If you can't afford a new battery, wait until you can change your battery

  • What does a MAC really need to do justice to FCE and FCEHD?

I need to purchase a new laptop. I want to use it to prepare 45 min documentaries. The original video will have audio filmed with it. I will want to add more narration, music, more photos, ie. the works. I have been using iPhoto and find that video containing audio and background noise, plus added narration, photos, and background music limits me to 20-30 min DVDs before stuttering occurs. What hardware do I need to do a professional job?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
A laptop is not for professionnal video editing in a regular basis ( at least in your home editing room).
If you need absolutely the portability, that's Okay, but keep in mind that Hard Drives of laptop are slower than one in desktop machine. An external Hard Drive is recommended.
A desktop machine is less fragile, has more connectors on it and is generally faster that the "laptop" little brother (in a head to head comparaison at the same introducing date, the laptop are one generation behind ).
A desktop machine can be easily upgraded and the parts are less expensive.
A good mic is a must to catch good voice overs.

  • What does "service battery" indicate?

I just saw that my battery condition is "service battery". Does this mean that I need a replacement, or is it safe to continue to use this battery? I just bought this computer less than 2 years ago and I have already needed to replace my hard drive and now my battery??

"Service Battery" usually does mean the battery needs replacement, though the message has sometimes been reported to come and go for a while before the battery's performance becomes unacceptably poor. I wouldn't ordinarily expect a two-year-old battery to need replacement, though.
What are your battery's Full Charge Capacity and Cycle Count as shown in System Profiler/System Report? And is this a 13", 15" or 17" MacBook Pro?

  • What DB roles are REALLY needed by the applications?

During our upgrade, the security / database guys at my office want me to lockdown the db accounts for portal, publisher, collab, anaytics, etc (also services, notification, security...all the alui related databases). They say that dbo is too privileged and I need to figure out just what the applications need and give them access.
My question is...what does each account REALLY need? Some accounts create tables (analytics). Is it sufficient for those accounts to just be given CREATE TABLE privileges? Can every other account just be given normal CRUD access?

    fair enough.
Ali, where did you find the SQL scripts for Collab? Is it someplace I can view easily?
One comment would be that of course it would be fine for these accounts to have DBO during upgrades, etc, if that is the only time when these 'creating views, indexes, and SP's' are used...

My battery is not being recognized by my computer anymore. I have tried an SMC reset and used multiple chargers
I am using a Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15'. Does this mean I need to replace the battery? It will only turn on when plugged in.
Also unrelated to this...when I try to eject the cd in my disc drive it will not respond. The cd is basically stuck inside and even hitting eject in Finder does nothing.

So I just unplugged and plugged the battery back in. Works completely fine now and a lot of startup issues went away.
