Does my computer have spyware/adware??

I clicked on a link to an article on Breitbart.com yesterday that truly looked legit..... Immediately I got a page stating I had spyware/malware on my computer along with audio stating the same thing.  It wasn't a pop up....it was actual window in my browser.  It would not let me out of it so I manually turned my computer off.  When it came back up from reboot it didn't pull the window back up.  I posted on their FB page and somebody responded saying they got same message along with another person but it was a different article than I was clicking on.... both Breitbart.com though.  I was in such a panic I didn't pay super close attention to the page but am pretty sure it included a phone number to call of course I didn't.   So far my iMac is behaving normally....
Having a mac I'm not sure what I should try and download to run to even check things out.  ??????
Help!!! FYI...I am not computer savvy.... just know the basics
Thanks
Debbie

You shouldn't download anything. That popup was loaded directly from the Internet; seeing it doesn't mean that you have any malware on the computer.

I have an iMac, iMac, 10,1 10.8. I would like to have iCloud downloaded to my computer.  Does my computer have the system requirement necessary. I use iCal on my Apple Notebook and Iphone 4S and want it to my Mac Desktop to sinc with all my Apple Products. Thank you!

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Does this computer have gps (my daughter's was just stolen), is there a way to remotely disable it?

does this computer have gps (my daughter's was just stolen), is there a way to remotely disable it?

First off, I'm sorry to hear about the theft of your daughter's computer.  The good news is that all Apple computers have their serial number in multiple places (depending on the model) and Apple maintains a list of every one of them.  Do you have the serial number?  If not, you can get it from the retailer you purchased it from.
As far as GPS and disabling it, it is going to depend on several factors but the short answer is probably not.  I mean, Yes, there is a a way to detect location in most modern Mac's through a web browser using Geolocation (W3C API) but there is no onboard GPS; disabling the machine remotely would require you to have 'Back to my Mac' already set up on it from iCloud.  There might also be some third party tools available that I'm not aware of.
Again, I'm really sorry to hear about the stolen computer.  I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if you have any other questions.
BTW, what model and year is the computer that was stolen?

Also, I set up an account on my macbook for a friend and he may have uploaded some info from this computer. Does anyone have suggestions on how to find out if he did?

  • If I plug my iPhone into a computer, and just want to play non-manually managed music, why does that computer have to be authorized?

My home base computer has been authorized to play music my friend has downloaded from iTunes.  I can upload that music to my iPhone and play it on the phone without any issue.  When I am at work, I plug my iPhone into my computer and play music through my work computer.  But the music is not manually managed, nothing is being stored on that computer, it simply streams through to the headphone jack, allowing me to use iTunes as a control panel for the phone's music library.
I can play my own music just fine (because my work computer is authorized for my account).  But I can't play my friend's music, because my work computer isn't authorized for HIS account.  Nor should I expect him to waste one of his 5 authorizations on my work computer.
But why does it need to be so?  If I'm already authorized to play his songs on my iPhone, then what difference does it make if it's streaming through my work computer or not?  Why does Apple care, and why are my music playing rights being unnecessarily infringed?  I am currently a very unhappy iTunes customer because of this.
We don't have to buy music from iTunes you know.  If I buy the CD, I can upload it without any of these play rights issues.  I can give my friend my CDs while he gives me his and all of this goes away.  The harder and more user unfriendly playing music from the iTunes Store becomes, the less likely we'll be to buy it.  This is a very simple fix.  If my home base computer is authorized and I can put music on my iPhone, I should be able to play that music off the phone anywhere at any time, so long as I'm not making a copy.  And I am not making copies.  Fix this or we shop elsewhere.

I spent an hour on the phone w/ apple support this morning. I went through all the trouble shooting and it appears everything is working fine...until you plug the phone in and try to use itunes. Then they put me on hold for 20 min. While they did this i had a guy at work who had an older version of itunes on his cpu plug my phone in. Voila! It popped right up in iTunes. Their product specialist told me to uninstall and reinstall iTunes 8.2. Didn't work. Then they told me to uninstall and reinstall an older version of iTunes. That way I could get music on my phone, but I would not be able to update to the newest version of the iPhone OS. That's great and all, but it really hasn't solved any problems. I'm giving apple the benefit of the doubt due to the fact they just released the newest version of itunes, a new iphone, and a new iphone OS; so there's bound to be bugs and fixes. But that goodwill probably won't last to long. So if they won't fess up to the fact there's a problem w/ the new iTunes soon and fix it I guess they're going to have to give me a new phone.

  • Does this computer have built-in camera?

    Hi there,
I have brought home my son's lovely laptop computer. He is developmentally disabled and needs some upgrading and file organizing done to the machine. I didn't think too much of it but a question came up when I started running Software Update. Two software items -- Airport and iSight -- are listed for updating.
But I don't know this computer's capabilities or lack of them for Airport and iSight.
This is a G4 iBook with a 14 inch screen he purchased in March of 2005. I checked "About this Mac," and it does have an Airport Extreme card installed. I did click on the Airport update.
I know some newer laptops have a built-in camera, but I don't know if this model in new enough to have that. I do not see anything in "About this Mac" to indicate that it does My guess is that it does not, but I don't know how to tell!
Does anyone know if it has a built-in camera? If not, then I don't need to bother with the iSight upgrade, right?
    Thanks,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,
No, the iBook G4 does NOT have a built-in iSight camera.
You might be able to find an external iSight camera on eBay or other Internet source. Then you might need the iSight update software.

  • Does my computer have the minimum sytem requirements?

I just bought a GeForce 8400 GS graphics card.
    The minimum requirements are
    256MB of system memory.
100MB of available hard disk drive space for basic driver installation.
    300W system power supply.
Is there any place in my computer where I can find out if I have these requirements? The lady at BB told me to not plug in the graphics card if I don't have the 300W power supply... I'm running Windows 7 if that matters.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I beg to differ on the 300 watt power supply requirement. The computer is assuming that you are running a top notch fully loaded computer at 100% capacity all the time. The truth of the matter is , it runs on power supplies as low as 220 watts! I know this for a fact , because I owned an Acer x3100 desktop and had that card at one point and it did not hurt it.

You cannot "connect" to it by using the serial number. The following has information from Apple regarding a lost or stolen device: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen

That is correct, in 2012 Apple ceased including a DVD drive in iMacs. There are external solutions, you can locate a USB external DVD drive that is compatible with OS X from multiple sources including Amazon and OWC (www.macsales.com). Apple also sells their own external DVD drive, in the USA online store the link is:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f
The price of Apple's is kind of expensive however it is designed to match the esthetics of Apple computers so it looks good.

I am trying to use a website that requires that my computer have the latest version of Java, which I have updated and installed Java 7 Update 51 (64-bit), however Firefox does not recognize that I even have Java on my computer. My computer is 64-bit
When I run "Verify Java Version" it show nothing is installed... but it is, I know that for a fact because it shows in my "Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features".
When I go back to the Java Download page, the following message is visible:
"We have detected you may be viewing this page in a 32-bit browser. If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers."
    My question is this:
Is there a way to change my Firefox browser from 32-bit to 64-bit.... because it appears that this is way Java is not functioning properly?

Firefox needs 32-bit plugins, so you'll need to install 32-bit Java for Firefox.
No, you can't change Firefox from 32-bt to 64-bit. There is a Nightly 64-bit version (alpha) of Firefox, but it is used only to test for regressions until development is resumed.

I have i-Tunes open on my computer and have entered i-Tunes store, ATV says it can't access the store.  Both on the same network!
I am so frustrated with this system!  All these problems with Apple TV are not the end but the beginning.
In i-Tunes, songs are lost when they have not been moved. I lose whole albums I have ripped from CDs to iTunes
An audiobook book in two files are in the library but only one file is recognized by iTunes when I try to play it or transfer it to my iPhone

However I think the hard drive is starting to fail as it keeps on losing the wireless connection and gas been stuttering a lot on playback.
