Does my G5 have PCI Express?  - Radeon X1900

Hello,
I am interested in buying a Radeon X1900 video card for my G5, but the requirements dictate that the G5 must be PCI Express based.
Mine is an 2004 G5 with the following specs:
Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.25 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.8f7
It doesn't appear to have a PCI Express card. Can anyone help me to verify this?
And if this G5 is NOT PCI Express based, what graphics card is recommended to improve the performance of Final Cut Studio 2?
Thanks,
JJ

  • How do I determine whether I have PCI Express v1.1 or v2.0?

This article in Mac Fixit states that computers with PCI Express v1.1 slots will NOT be able to take full advantage of OpenCL in Snow Leopard:

... In terms of PCI Express, My Mac Pro is on the cusp. PCI 2.0 was announced in January 2007 and presumably made it's way onto the assembly line a few months after that. I bought my refurbished Mac Pro in June 2007. I can't determine in the System Profiler if I have PCIv1.1 or v2.0. Does anyone know how to find out? MacTracker and machistory.com haven't answered the question. It seems some of the MacPro1,1 models shipped with v1.1 and some with v2.0. How do I determine what I have? Thanks for your help!

How do I determine whether I have PCI Express v1.1 or v2.0?
    Hi,
Open Apple System Profiler (About this Mac:More info) and look at the Hardware: Model Identifier. If it says Mac Pro 1,1 or Mac Pro 2,1 you have PCIe v1.1 slots.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/intel/macpro/
If it says Mac Pro 3,1 you have PCIe v1.1 in slots 3 and 4 and PCIe v2.0 in slots 1 and 2.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/intel/macpro-2008/
If it says Mac Pro 4,1 you have PCIe v2.0 in all four slots.

    Hope that helps!

  • My acer aspire x1935 does not recognize my pcie express hdmi capture card

my acer aspire x1935 dose not recognize my pci express hdmi hd capture card.  it works fine on a win XP sp3 machinewith a gigabite motherboard and a amd processor.  I updated the bios and it still dosent recognize it as a multimedia card in the device driver.  I have Windows 7 homeedition 64 bit with a intell I3 processor.

Regarding my x1935, I have tried a safe mode boot, I also tried reinstalling acers window 7 backup downloaded and reinstalled acers motherboard drivers and flashed the bios to the latest version and still the HDMI hd dvr capture card is not detected by windowws 7. Can some one help...
I have been working on this problem for the last two weeks and its very frustrating.

  • System does not boot when PCIe express Card is inserted in system. Using Spartan-6 PCIe Integrated Endpoint Block 1.3

    Hi,
I am using Spartan-6 PCIe Endpoint Block core v1.3 and I am using ISE 12.1. I have used the PIO example design,
modified it according to our design.
The core is configured as below:
    BAR0 - 8KB, 32-bit, Memory Type
    Lanes - x1
Clock - 125 MHz (system clock)
The card is a custom board. When the card is pluged into the system the system does not boots, it hangs.
I have tried debugging using chipscope and monitored trn_lnk_up_n, trn_reset_n and trn_clk. trn_lnk_up_n stays
high (deasserted), trn_reset_n stays low (asserted), trn_clk is low (No clk).
    What might be the issue?
    Thanks & Regards.

    Thanks Gabor, for the response.
    I refered couple of answer records like AR# 34873 and AR# 34894, I monitored trn_reset_n, sys_reset_n, clock_locked, PLLLKDET and RESETDONE signals as suggested in AR# 34894.
    Status as follows:
    SYS_RESET_N = 1 (deasserted)
    TRN_RESET_N = 0 (asserted)
    CLOCK_LOCKED = 0 (deasserted)
    PLLLKDET = 0 (deasserted)
    RESETDONE = 0 (deasserted)
which means the transceiver PLL frequency is not within the predetermined tolerance. Is this problem related to the PCIe Jitter Attenuator I am using on the board to derive 125MHz from 100MHz system Clock.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Late 2004 G5 w/ PCI Express x16?

The Mac Support page with the Late 2004 Powermac G5 user manual link is not working properly. So, I'm asking here.
Does the early model of Powermac G5 (Late 2004) have PCI Express x16 architecture on the motherboard? I have the Dual 2.0Ghz version. The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to upgrade the video card on it to a new Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT but that requires a PCI Express x16 slot.
Please let me know. If not, do you know what architecture it has? Thank you in advance.
    Powermac G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Just an update for those interested in video card options with AGP slots rather than the newer PCI Express architecture...
After communicating with the Strangedogs people, I went ahead and purchased an Nvidia GeForce 7800GS (256MB RAM) to be 'flashed' to work in a Mac system (read about 'flashing' BEFORE using it as an option). This is the BEST AGP card on the market today and with AGP dying out to PCI Express, you'll probably see fewer and fewer AGP cards in the future. My other AGP option was the ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB RAM (Mac Version) but the GeForce uses the newer architecture and is suppposedly about 16% better in terms of high end performance (see http://www.barefeats.com/mutant3a.html). Obviously the PREFERRED option was to upgrade my entire system to PCI Express architecture, but as with many others, too much money for too little improvement at the moment.
    Pros:
    Performance boost (+16%)
    Newer architecture
Cost about $100 less than ATI X800 XT Mac Version (cost is about the same with $100 cost of 'flashing' unless you can do it yourself)
    Cons:
No dual-DVI for 30" Apple Cinema display
Modification to a PC designed card (not standard practice)
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 XT card, so I expect a big performance boost. I'll report with the results from Strangedogs and the 'flashing' of the 7800 GS...

  • Radeon X1900 Users, Anyone ever used this?

After problems with the X1900, HD 3870 and the 8800GT I am finally back to the x1900 and was looking around online for some way to cool it down. I am currently using a program called Smcfancontrol 2 to cool down my box which seems like its doing a great job.
    I bumped into this item:
    http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Cooler/TMG/CL-G0076/cl-g0076.asp
Anyone have any experience with this? Anyone know anything about it? Would I be wasting my money? Thanks a lot in advance for your replies.

You have an ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics card on board ?
If so it needs a deep cleaning routine !
Open case and look to the back of the card , you will see a recess about 10mm deep below the plastic top cover and the printed circuit board. At the back of this recess are a row of copper coloured fins/heat sinks.
If what you actually see is something resembling a grey fur blanket thats a build up of dust !
Temporarily remove the graphics card and carefully remove this clogging matter regularly !
THIS CARDS WORKS WELL Provided its clean (Frequency may very depending where you keep your tower !
I have 1 MacPro in TV Room and has to remain on the carpet -This needs cleaning every month, while another machine (Server) is in home office off floor and NO carpet yet is ON ALL the time and needed cleaning just once in six months!)
It is my experience putting a bigger fan on these cards just exasperates the problem> ***** MORE DUST INTO THIS RECESS MORE QUICKLY !
Its this recess thats the cards design weakness AND its ATIs fault!

  • Radeon X1900 & HP Scanning

I have two issues that prevent me from staying with Leopard on my MacPro:
    • I get this intermittent horizontal black line across the screen. I have seen other reports of this problem but no resolution. I have the ATI Radeon x1900 with 512MB VRAM.
    • Photoshop CS3 crashes when I begin scanning from my HP PSC 2210 All-In-One. Other scanning problems have been reported in these forums as well.
I do have Leopard installed on my MacBook Pro and that is working out very well. On the MacPro, I have retreated to booting off my original Tiger-installed drive.
In the meantime … waiting for some updates …

An update to my previous post --
I installed the Leopard upgrade, 10.5.1, this afternoon. I am still getting the intermittent horizontal black line across my screen. I can print to my HP PSC 2210 all-in-one, but I still cannot scan from it. Specifically important for me is that Photoshop CS3 will print to the hp printer but will not recognize the its scanner function. None of these problems exist when running Tiger.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 120 or ATI Radeon X1900... which is better?

    Hi-
I currently have the ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card installed in my Mac Pro 2.26 Nehalem. I'm not having any issue's with the card except that the fans turn On quite frequently, and they're a little loud.
I'm not using it for any games, etc... My primary use is with Pro Tools (a music DAW application).
The ATI Radeon X1900 is running a Apple 30" display and a Sony Bravia 46" LCD.
If I replaced the ATI Radeon X1900 with a NVIDIA GeForce 120, would I be asking for trouble?
    Thanks in advance.

If your Mac Pro came with ATI Radeon X1900, then it needs a card with EFI-32 firmware. The NVIDIA GeForce 120 has EFI-64 firmware, and won't work in the pre 2008 Mac Pro. The only upgrade for early Mac Pros is the ATI Radeon HD 4870

  • What is the difference between PCI-x and PCI Express?

I hear the new dual core Power Macs have PCI Express slots. How are these different than the PCI-X slots in my old Power Mac?
    jmf

PCI Express is faster than PCI-X and not a bus architecture. Each slot has its own dedicated bandwidth to and from the system controller.
PCI-X has a maximum clock speed of 133 MHz and a maximum throughput of just over 1 GBps.
PCI Express cards and slots are defined by their bandwidth, or number of data lanes — typically one lane, four lanes, eight lanes, or 16 lanes. At 250 MBps per lane, a four-lane slot can transfer data at up to 1 GBps and an eight-lane slot, up to 2 GBps. The new PowerMac G5s have one 16 lane slot, two four-lane slots, and one eight-lane slot.

  • Question about ATI  Radeon X1900

I have the ATI Radeon X1900 (512mb) and the fan on the card runs consistently... as in never stops unless the machine is asleep or off.
Is this normal behavior for this card?
    I have a MacPro 8Core and a 30" Cinema Display.
    I appreciate any insight.

Yes, it's audible although how much depends on your environment and hearing. Like you I wish mine were quieter but I'm used to it now.

  • Radeon X1900 G5 PCI Express - Leopard (anyone?)

I am about to purchase this video card simply cause....its the only one available...but does anyone have this card and running leopard having any trouble?...

I have purchased one about 3 weeks ago. Already had Leopard installed. The only problem I had is my computer wouldn't go to sleep; display shuts down but the LED above the power button doesn't pulsate and the fans are turning like crazy. clicking the mouse or pushing keyboard key does nothing I have to shut it down by pressing/maintaining the power button. Went back to normal after I disabled all features in ATI Displays Panel, but issue came back after a few days. I've pulled the card out and placed the original GForce 6600 back in, no problems since (5 days). I've opened a ticket on ATI support page but they replied they're not supporting Leopard yet. I think I'm going to try the card with Tiger just to see...

  • PCI Express Power Cable for ATI X1900 XT

I was given a X1900 ATI but the card didn't come with the power cord (booster cable) that connects to the motherboard. I'd like to order one but have no idea what I need to get. I know it's a 6 pin to 6 pin connection but that's it. Anyone would know where I could find the right info? I tried ATI/AMD but they only show the old power cable (4 pin inline).
    Thanks.

    hey Renaud
i'm planning to buy a pair.. but i'm not sure if it will fit....
one end plugs into the motherboard.. the other end goes into the vid card
but the question is does it fit the Mac Pro pci express power socket?
and the other end of it does it fit any standard pc vid card? or is it also smaller?
as i plan to buy this for my Mac Pro so i can power up the 8800 gtx
    thanks!

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 - 1 GB GDDR5 - PCI-Express 2.0

I would like to up grade my graphic card to Radeon HD 4870 - 1 GB GDDR5 - PCI-Express 2.0. Will it work on Mac Pro early 2009? Given that apple seems to cost and arm and leg. compare to whats on the market.

the prosumer that will only be using 30" displays
Prosumer,... the mental health implications might apply.
And funny you should mention, a new, open-box Display will be arriving here tomorrow. Ordered it almost 2 weeks ago, better be "insanely great".
Not to be on the serious side though, there are it seems, many cards out and coming out. That Apple approved cards come out later doesn't phase me when I'm already getting remarkable performance from the one I have. And when the dust clears there should be some even better cards available, maybe even at a discount.

  • Should I buy GeForce 6600 PCI Express or Radeon X300 PCI Express???

Which should I buy GeForce 6600 PCI Express or Radeon X300??? The GeForce 6600 PCI Express is more expensive and I dont know if it has a Programable Pixel Shader. ANYONE COULD YOU HELP ME WITH MY DECISION??

Definitely not the X300, it is not worth it.
Look to the 6600, but beware, users have reported problems with the 6600 series cards and the heatsink lately so it may be wise to look at all your options before you make a choice. Try looking at other forums and steer clear of manufacturer's support forums as they can be biased and content has to be moderated more.
    Good luck
