Does my iPod need repair?

Do I need to bring my iPod (30 GB iPhoto, approximately 1 year old) in for repair, or am I just an idiot who can't follow directions (please don't answer the second question -- it's rhetorical)? Here's the situation: My iPod froze up, and I reset it. It seemed to work OK for awhile, and then it happened again. Resetting it did not work, as it did the last time. I recharged the battery, and according to the screen, it was fully charged. However, when I tried to use it, my songs and playlists had all disappeared. When I plugged it into my iMac (I run OS X, Jaguar, although I don't know if that's relevant) and opened iTunes, the iPod icon never appeared, the way it usually does when I update the iPod's contents. Nor did the screen go gray. In short, nothing happened, although the iPod did start up with the blinking "Do Not Disconnect" message. Soon, I got a message on my computer reading "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click ignore." I clicked ignore because I was afraid of what would happen if I clicked "initialize." I read through the manual and the online help pages, and I even tried to restore my iPod by running the iPod applications/utilities updater application. It didn't work -- the program did not seem to recognize that I'd plugged in the iPod or whatever. I don't want to pay for an expensive repair if this is something that I can handle myself. I still have all the disks that came with the iPod, but I'd prefer not to completely lose everything that's in iTunes already -- I have a full library, and it would be a real pain to recreate it.
I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. I'd rather not download any new updates, if possible, because I have a dial-up Internet connection, and it takes forever to download software.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   iPod Photo, 30 GB

OK, I followed your (very helpful) advice (thank you!), and I selected both the icon that had 27.95 Apple (the iPod, I assumed) and the little icon indented beneath it, which didn't say anything but appeared to be a subset of the one above. I had to initialize them because I got the message saying that it was unreadable (the other option was to ignore). So after I did that, I clicked on the First Aid tab and -- voila! -- was able to click on the "repair" button. It took a couple minutes, and then I got the following message:
Repairing disk "".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Catalog file entry not found for extent
Volume check failed.
Repair completed.
So now what? My iPod is still plugged into my computer (I'm getting the "Do Not Disconnect" message on it, but there is no way to eject it because the iPod icon is still not showing up either in iTunes or on my desktop.
Do I need to start over by reinstalling the iPod software and just pretending that I've got a brand new iPod? Will it mess the iPod up if I disconnect it while the "Do Not Disconnect" message is on its screen?
Thank you so much.

  • HT1483 My ipod needed repairing, so I backed up the data into restore file. My ipod was swapped for a totally new ipod and now I am having difficulty reloading the restored data that I saved. I keep getting the corrupt or not compatible MSG??? Any Ideas

My IPOD needed repairing, so I backed up my personal data into a restore file. In the end my ipod was exchanged for a brand new one and now I am having difficulty with restoring all of my data that I saved.
While trying to restore through iTunes I keep gettingthe corrupt or not compatible error message. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this issue?
    Much Appreciated for any help!

You can not restorea a backup made with a newer version of iOS to a phone with an older version of iOS.
1400 photos stored on the phone? Do you not EVER extract them? The camera roll is intended to be temporary storage. Like the SD card in a digital camera. You should be extracting them to your computer on a regular basis.
Contacts should be synced to a compatible contact manager or cloud service. If you were not doing any of these things, guard your backups with your life and make sure your computer is being backed up on a regular basis, because you won't be able to get them back until you get a new phone with at least the same version of iOS that your 4 had.
There are 3rd party applications that say they can extract this information from a backup file, but I don't have personal experience with them.

  • Using the Alarm clock -- does the ipod need to be on the charger?

Does the ipod (touch 4g) have to be on the charger in order for the alarm clock to work?
Or does the ipod "awake" from the off position and sound the alarm?

The alarm will work if the iPod is asleep (screen goes black automatically after set period of inactivity or you momentarily press the power button and you have to slide to unlock). However, if you power it off (hold power until power off slider appears and you slide it) it will not alarm.

  • Why does my ipod need to have the newest os to allow games that won't go on it now but where on it before?

I have an Ipod touch (prob 1st or 2nd gen) that used to have a bunch of free games on for my kids and I upgraded to the newest os (so I could use Netflix) and when I did, the games had to be reinstalled. But when I go to install previously enjoyed (and previously working) games... they won't because the device says I need os 4.3 for the game. This seems like a scam to me!!!!
How do I get the old games back? and why isn't there compatibility with games I know worked on the ipod before?
Aaron (livin' in the free world costs I guess)

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • Does my iPod need a new battery?

My iPod, when the battery is fully drained takes forever to start charging. When plugged in to charge, it keeps flashing the "sad iPod icon." It takes a almost a whole day to >START< charging, could this be a sign that my iPod's battery is finally giving out or is just broken?

Apple will do it for $79.
A third-party place like this one is less expensive. Google for more.

  • What settings does my ipod need to be on in order to transfer content to a new computer

I am trying to transfer ipod content to a new computer using ipod.  It's not working
and I am at wit's end.  I have tried using the instructions on the Apple website.  I
have also tried the Tunes Plus softward.  I go through all of steps correctly, I think,
and nothing happens.  I don't think I have a problem with iTunes so maybe it
could be my ipod.  Can anyone help?

Airplay always adds confusion in my view as it's not the only way the device works.
AppleTV can play content from several sources
1 - Your local iTunes library - iTunes must be running/computer on for you to be able to browse the library database under the Computers column and pull the media to the AppleTV for playback using itunes as the helper app.
2 - You can 'push' compatible media and content of some iOS apps to AppleTV from iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch and using Airplay from itunes (the only desktop app enabled for Airplay in OS X or Windows).  Airplay from itunes generally only gives different results with music whereby equaliser, enhancement and cross fade settings are applied before sending the audio whereas 'pulling' using AppleTV menus does not add these effects.  Also Airplay from itunes is one method to play Audible audiobooks using AppleTV as a 'speaker'.
3 - In some countries past itunes purchases (excluding movies currently) can be played directly from the internet (iCloud service) though clearly if you have a slow or capped internet connection, playing from your localitunes library would give better performance.

  • Does the iPod need to go back to Apple or am I missing something?

My friend has an iPod mini that she uses with her windows computer. It was working fine and then it wouldn't turn on. It wouldn't mount on the computer so I plugged it into the A/C adapter and it didn't charge. When I used the menu/select the Apple logo comes up then blinks off after a few seconds. I tried to put it into disk mode and that didn't work either. I even plugged it into my mac to no avale. Is their anything left to try before calling apple?
    Thanks

    See these.
    iPod won't turn on.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize the iPod is connected.
iPod only shows an Apple logo and doesn't start up.
After that, if nothing helps, it's probably time for service.

  • Does my Ipod need to be formatted?

I recently bought an Ipod Nano, and it is not registering with my Itunes. When I try to download the new version of Itunes, it always tells me there is an error with "Stopping Services," and I have no idea how to correct the problem. I am wondering if formatting my Ipod would help at all, but I am unsure as to how to format it. Can anyone help me?

    Hi
To make it more obvious: your iPod has nothing to do with it when you try downloading an update of iTunes and it fails. Would not help to format it.
Have you problems downloading other software to your PC too? Sounds like a network problem...

  • How new does my ipod need to be to work with my new 2011 Audi A4?

I don't own an ipod currently, however my new 2011 Audi A4 has music interface that allows me to connect my ipod in the glove box and then conrtol it from my car's radio.  I have been told a "4th generation" ipod or newer will work.  Can't tell what devices are 4th generation...I have some access to older ipods but don't know if they will work. Any suggestions??

  • Why does my iPod need to re-synchronize so many files every time

I just plugged in my iPod and it synchronized 12 files, including files that I know for a fact were on the iPod already. Not 30 minutes later I plugged it in and it synchronized 13 files, including some of the same files it had just synchronized.
I've seen this behavior before. What's going on?

Each music file contains a great deal of information regarding the song. If any of this changes, from album artwork to composer, even to play count or skip count, iTunes exchanges that information with the iPod upon sync.
Did you listen to any of these songs in the interim? Did you move them around on the playlists or alter any information? It's not really a significant issue, just the manner by which your iPod stays up-to-date with your iTunes library.

  • Does the iPod need the Pod driver to work with XP and any iPod

I want to load iTunes 6 on 120 XP workstations. The problem tho is that I do not want my users to connect up their personal iPods to the company's computers. The purpose is so that they can gain access to the iTunes music store expressly for work purposes.
If I continue down this road and install ONLY iTunes 6, if a user connects their iPod will it communicate with their iPod?
Disabling the USB ports is not an option as I have other permitted USB devices such as mice and keyboards.
    Thanks....

You could try to disable the "iPodService" (and perhaps the "iTunesHelper" as well) on these machines. The iPod would still function as an external hard drive, as hudgie pointed out, but iTunes should not be able to upload music to the iPod anymore.
    Just give it a try.
    Alexander.

  • Does my ipod nano need to be connected to get onto itunes

Does my ipod need to be connected to get on to itunes, im new at this. Also, and if some one else gets on the PC do they have access to my itunes?

    Yes.
Not unless they have access to your user account.

  • Running out of time with an Ipod that needs repair...can I save my music?

Maybe I can find some assistance here. The entire reason I have an Ipod is so I wouldn't take up all of the space on my computer with music. I import it to my Ipod and then I delete from my computer. I attend college pretty far away from my hometown and thus don't have ready access to the hard copies of all the music on the Ipod.
I said all of that to say my Ipod had been acting up recently. It would stop mid song and freeze or just continually cycle through the songs without actually playing them, and if you held the thing up to your ear you could here that hum like it was about to start up followed by a strange click. Hum, click, hum, click. This is the exact same problem that I sent my first Ipod in for repair for; the one I have now is the new one they sent back to me.
Anyway, so the new one started having this problem, but it never lasted for long so I continued to work with it. Then yesterday I got the dreaded sad face ipod icon in mid song. I rushed home to look up what I could do to fix it and in my hurry tripped as I stepped inside and dropped the ipod. Weirdly enough, that brought the main menu screen back, so I quickly put it into disk mode and hooked it up to my computer.
Now my question: I know this won't last and the ipod needs repair. Is there anyway I can back up/recover the music on it so I don't lose it all? Keep in mind almost none of this music is on my computer.

Welcome to Apple Discussions. Regrets you're having these problems.
If you have a Mac, you can clone your iPod's contents to a disk image file using Carbon Copy Cloner (scroll down at the web page that this link points to).
If you have a PC, you can accomplish the same thing with one of the many third-party utilities for copying music from an iPod to a PC. You would have to search for these; I am a Mac person and hence am unfamiliar with the specific names/sites for them.
    Hope this helps.

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?
