Does my MacBook Pro have a virus?

My mac's been acting very strange the past two days, it freezes up all of a sudden and sometimes an ad will pop up and it wont let me close it. What's a good/safe & reliable way to check if I have a virus on my laptop or not?

now i get a constant error about the disk
What kind of error is this? If it's a message saying that there's not enough free space, that's your problem. If your system drive gets too full, it will start having performance problems and can even start experiencing serious problems like crashes and data loss. The general rule of thumb is that you need around 10% of the drive free.
Do not try to clear space by using a "cleaning" tool, clearing caches, deleting language files or pre-installed applications, etc. Those are small-scale and/or temporary fixes that could have unanticipated side effects, including damage to your system. You need to delete personal files, either outright (if they are no longer needed) or after moving them to an external hard drive. One possibility would be to clear out your Downloads folder, if there's a lot of stuff in there.
If you have a lot of large files that you need and can't conveniently put any of them on an external drive, you can upgrade the hard drive to a larger one.
If the error message isn't one about free space, please give us the exact message so we can better assist you.

Does the Macbook Pro have a program to run Windows built in? If not, what is the best program to do so. Purchasing a new Mac.

No. The Mac does not have anything to run Windows
You must install either virtualizrion software or use BootCamp to create a partition for Windows. Once you have done that then you must install Windows.

does the macbook pro have the capacity to print directly to blank cd?  If not- can you suggest an add-on product that will work with the mac pro?

Unless you have a printer that can feed and print on a physical CD then you cannot. This isn't a function of the computer. Printers can usually print onto labels of any sort, but not directly onto the disc itself.

  • Does a Macbook Pro have iWeb already on it?

I'm purchasing a MacBook Pro and have always loved iWeb, does iWeb come on the MacBook Pro?? And does Garageband and iMovie too??

No. iWeb is no longer supported nor is iDVD. iMovie, GarageBand, and iPhoto are still included with new Macs.
If you have iWeb already it will still work. After June 2012 there will be some funtions of iWeb that were used specifically for Mobile Me will no longer work. If you are using iWeb for a website on Mobile Me then you will need to find an alternative hosting service before the end of June 2012.

  • Does the macbook pro have a 'dv terminal'?

I have macbook pro and panasonic dv video camera. Panasonic manual says I can use a dv interface cable to connect the camera to the computer if the computer has a dv terminal. Does the mac have a dv terminal? is it one of the firewire ports?
    many thanks

    Hi nandi,
always learning something new here: I have never heard the term 'dv terminal' but a quick goodgle search showed that this is another name for a 4-pin FireWire port.
So since the MacBook Pro has two FireWire ports the answer is YES.
But be aware that the Firewire ports on the MacBook Pro are full-sized ports either 6-pins for Firewire400 or 9-pins for Firewire800.
So the usual 4pins connector for Camcorder does not fit.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Does the MacBook Pro require a virus protection software?

I have an unregistered version of Mac Protector that indicates that I have a worm virus .  Is this necessary to protect my MacBook Pro?

If you happen to stumble upon one of these fake anti-virus security alerts, stay calm and avoid the urge to click your way out of it. Instead, simply hit Command-Q  (firefox, Safari etc.) and shut it down.
If  a window popped up warning you about viruses while you were on the web, it's most likely a scam. As long as you didn't run an installer, you're just fine. Go into your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize or Desktop if that is your default for downloads.
There are different variants of names for this malware but the steps of removal should be the same if you installed the scamware.
    1. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and terminate processes linked to MACDefender (or other names).
       2. Delete MACDefender (or other names) from the Applications folder
       3. Check System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items for MACDefender (or other names) items.
       4. Check the downloads for any related items to MACDefender (or other names).
       5. Run a Spotlight search for "MACDefender (or other names)" to check for any associated files and if any remove them.

You have fallen for a total scam. Get this  off your computer immediately.
First, restart in Safe Boot by holding the Shift key down at the chime. Or, alternatively, open Activity Monitor in Utilities, set to Active Processes, find the program and force quit it. This will keep it from running, but only temporarily, so you can remove it.
        1.    Drag the MacSecurity program -- or whatever it's called; it keeps using different names -- MAC Defender, MacProtector, MacKeeper 911, Apple Security Center, Apple Web Security -- it's not hard to imagine the new names it will be using in the coming days -- (installed in the Applications folder by default) to the Trash. Empty the Trash.
        2.    Remove item of same name from the Login Items for your Account in the OS X System Preferences (if it exists).
        3.    Go to your Home folder Library>Preferences and, if you find it, delete com.alppe.spav.plist. Look also in Application Support (may not be anything there, but check just in case) and search for any files with one of the above names and trash them. Empty the trash.
        4.    If you use Safari, go to Preferences>General and UNCHECK "Open "safe" files after downloading. Keep that unchecked.

  • How much RAM does the MacBook Pro have?

I need at least 4GB RAM preferably 8GB RAM.... it is for school and i have many games and scrapbook tools for my electives.... please help.

Are you planning on buying a MacBook Pro or do you already have one? Apple sells MBPs (non-Retina) with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM. The problem with buying RAM from Apple is that it's so expensive. If you ordered a 4GB machine, for instance, you could upgrade it yourself to 8GB or 16GB without voiding the warranty.
So if you're buying - go with a 'base' 4GB model and buy the RAM and install it yourself.
