Does my MBP need SMC update?
I have just received my new PowerBook Pro 2.33 MHz, running OSX 10.4.8. No apparent problems... Checking my current SMC version, it is 1.14f5.
Here is the catch: Software Update does NOT mention any SMC update, whereas Apple (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbooksmcfirmwareupdate11.html) does suggest updating to version 1.4f12.
So, should I update or not? Appreciate your advise!
Following a recent Apple support article, I have learnt that:
"Firmware updates for Intel-based Macintosh computers may not be displayed automatically using Software Update. If they do not appear in Software Update, they must be manually downloaded from the Apple Support Downloads site."
In turn, I cannot really trust Sostware Update on this, isn't it, and I am back with the original question...

Hey there! So I plugged in my ipod to my computer and it didn't show up where it normally does. I need to update my song list. How can I make it appear? It doesn't come up in iphoto either. A few days ago my sis plugged it into another computer but I don't know if she synched it to the other computer, and frankly, she won't remember. I have tried updating itunes, charging the ipod, restarting the ipod/computer, and the rest of what the apple site said to do. Ps I have the latest ipod touch
I need help stat! Please help!I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it... She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics? -
My bank gives me free Kaspersky antivirus, does my MBP need it?
Hi, My bank has offered me free antivirus software, does my mac need it?
Your computer doesn't need an antivirus, and you mustn't install any commercial antivirus on OS X. If you want to install an antivirus, use Sophos or ClamXav. See > http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg

Why does itunes constantly need to update files?
I update my files manually on my iPod touch. Whenever it is plugged in, every few minutes iTunes says, "updating files," and takes a moment to update, I suppose. But while it is doing this, my iTunes becomes unresponsive if I try to do anything; play or change a song, or make changes to artist, album, etc on any song. As I am constantly updating my files to include album name, art, and other things, it seems to become unresponsive and need to be restarted almost every time I use iTunes. This is very aggrivating and I don't know how to make it stop??
Try posting in the iTunes forum.

Does my MBP need an anti virus?
My last computer was a PC and it had so many viruses (and other lovely things) it would take half an hour to open up firefox! Everyone i speek to says a Mac doesn't need an anti virus, but mine might need an exception. Needless to say i'm not the most cautious downloader, is their anything i can do so that history doesn't repeat itself?
As xdunlapx suggested, you might want to use either (or both) Sophos and/or ClamXav. Do not download the version of ClamXav that comes from the App Store as it does not include the 'real time' ClamXav Sentry. Sentry is a part of ClamXav that will scan particular folders that you select - I have it 'gaurding' my Downloads folder and the folder where my emails are stored. It does a very good job and is not intrusive.
While there are no known viruses for the Mac, there is malware out there - I would suggest reading Thomas Reed's excellent Mac Malware Guide. Thomas recommends both Sophos and ClamXav and, for me, he's the resident expert on Mac malware.
Good luck - don't worry too much...

HT3696 Does this article need an update? The chart doesn't include Intel Core i5.
I'm using an iMac model 1.1 with OS 10.8.4. Trying to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. The chart in the article about how to find that out doesn't include an Intel Core i5 processor. What is it?
Perhaps the page didn't load fully, or there was a temporary problem at apple... it shows in the table, and has been there since 2011.

MBP after waking from sleep problem + new SMC update temperature
Hi there!
I have two issues:
1. When I wanted to wake my MBP from sleep it asked me to enter the password and then all the screen went black. I could move my mouse cursor and chance sound volume but whichever key I pushed I had my screen "flashing" (like the option, flash when error or sth like that), any ideas what can cause this problem?
2. Yesterday I installed new SMC update. Befere doing so my MBP was terribly hot, especially on the top bar near f keys, but the coreduotemp showed 45C, after installing SMC update it's all the time 65, which is exactly opposite to what people say here.
Thanx

I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight (iMac5,1) to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old system parts. I have zapped PRAM. The blue indicator in system audio panel will appear for a second as I slide the bar for internal mic but then it disappears. Is there a fix?
The sound seems very faint but can here static on playback.

when the apple review team review our app, they point out that our app uses a background mode but does not include functionality that requires that mode to run persistently。but in fact, when the app in background ,the app need data update to make the function of trajectory replay come ture。in fact, we have added function when the app is in background mode。we have point out the point to them by email。but they still have question on the background mode,we are confused, does anyone can help me,i still don't know why do review team can't find the data update when the app is in background and how do i modify the app,or what is the really problem they refered,do i misunderstand them?
the blow is the content of the review team email:
We found that your app uses a background mode but does not include functionality that requires that mode to run persistently. This behavior is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.
We noticed your app declares support for location in the UIBackgroundModes key in your Info.plist but does not include features that require persistent location.
It would be appropriate to add features that require persistent use of real-time location updates while the app is in the background or remove the "location" setting from the UIBackgroundModes key. If your application does not require persistent, real-time location updates, we recommend using the significant-change location service or the region monitoring location service.
For more information on these options, please see the "Starting the Significant-Change Location Service" and "Monitoring Shape-Based Regions" sections in the Location Awareness Programming Guide.
If you choose to add features that use the Location Background Mode, please include the following battery use disclaimer in your Application Description:
"Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life."
Additionally, at your earliest opportunity, please review the following question/s and provide as detailed information as you can in response. The more information you can provide upfront, the sooner we can complete your review.
We are unable to access the app in use in "http://www.wayding.com/waydingweb/article/12/139". Please provide us a valid demo video to show your app in use.
For discrete code-level questions, you may wish to consult with Apple Developer Technical Support. When the DTS engineer follows up with you, please be ready to provide:
- complete details of your rejection issue(s)
- screenshots
- steps to reproduce the issue(s)
- symbolicated crash logs - if your issue results in a crash log
If you have difficulty reproducing a reported issue, please try testing the workflow as described in <https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/qa/qa1764/>Technical Q&A QA1764: How to reproduce a crash or bug that only App Review or users are seeing.Unfortunately, these forums here are all user to user; you might try the developer forums or get in touch with the team that you are working with.

about says i have 10.7.2 yet app store on mac mini says i need to update it,
what to do? applecare rep rude says ignorei appreciate the help since Applecare is not helping,
and these replies have not helped, things have gotten worse,
first even though you tell me i dont need the update, i still don't like seeing
an update is available every time i go to macappstore,
next three times now I downloaded the update, it is the whole 3.79 gb Mac OS 10.7.2
i do the long download for the update,
and install and give whatever they ask in passwords etc,
then it reboots and go through all the new installation crap
that I need to do
it is getting to be like a Microsoft project here,
and i cannot get google to show me the way or Applecare
with the one year left on extended support, and these apple communities
don't get me wrong, i am greatful for any help,
especially since Apple care refuses to help,
when they are paid to help
you guys and gals are volunteers and mean well, even though you want to be right about what you say,
the point is it says I need an update for the 10.7.2 and won't give me the update
and take the update off,
now if you say it is something i do not need and it is a glitch with macappstore,
then why doesn't it get fixed or someone else complain about it?
sorry if this offends Apple Zealots which i am one,
I have a windows netbook but I am having more trouble with the latest mac and Icloud which I paid for extra service
and two iphones and i am frustrated, that on the iphone and itunes apps are missing and itunes does not have a direct chat line to help but that is for another forum, just putting it out there. -
I am told I need to update Flashplayer. I have downloaded the update 5 times and installed it successfully on FireFox but Safari still says I need to update. I have gone so far as to restart before re-opening Safari. What am I not doing?
Enable plug-ins.
Safari > Preferences > Security
Web content:
Is the box next to "Enable plug-ins" checked?

My laptop has crashed and I'm in between getting a new one but need to update my iOS on my iPad, is there anyway of doing this without a laptop or computer?
If you can't update via wifi, you can use a friend's computer, or an Apple store will do it for you.
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623
If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Cheers, Tom

trying to update apple tv (small black box). how do i do update? can't find system settings. i see system preferences no mac pro. does apple tv need to be plugged into hdtv for the update or PC. If PC, how?
You have to do it on the Apple TV itself while it's plugged into a TV so that you can see its screen.

How to update software on your Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation)
Learn how to update the software on your Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation). It's always a good idea to have the latest software on your Apple TV.
Update your software
Select Settings > General > Update Software. Apple TV checks for an available update; if one is available, a download message should appear.
Click Download and Install to start the download process.
Do not disconnect your Apple TV during the update process. The Apple TV status light may flash slowly during the update and restart process. This is expected behavior. -
