Does my new Macbook Pro have an overvolted I7-4770HQ?

The brand new 15" Macbook Pro Retina I bought about two weeks ago arrived a few days ago and I was surprised on the first day when I noticed it was running really hot. At this point I decided to get a hardware monitoring program (iStat Menus) so I could try to figure out why it was running so hot and to try to avoid it reaching such a state again. Once iStats was up and running it reported that my cpu was at about 97°C. While I was perusing the statistics of my machine I noticed the vcore was at 1.77 V. This struck me as odd as most of the i7-4770k OC guides I've seen recommend a vcore of around 1.35 V. To make things a little more difficult, I have so far been unsuccessful in finding any information on what the i7-4770HQ's standard vcore rating. If anyone could confirm that the i7-4770HQ's is meant to run at 1.77 V that would be a great help, if not should I look into getting it fixed? I mean higher vcore = hotter cpu = shorter lifespan, right?
MBPR Specs:
i7-4770HQ 2.2 GHz Quad-Core CPU w/ Iris 5200 Pro Graphics
16 GB Ram
256 GB SSD Boot drive
OS X 10.9.4

It seems that only the last few lines of my post were actually posted. If that's the case and my browser's not just glitching out, here's the rest:

  • Does the new MacBook Pro have an optical drive?

Quick, easy question - does the new MacBook Pro come with an optical drive? Or does one have to purchase an external optical drive if one wants one?

Depends on which one you buy. The Retina models do not and if you need one, have to purchase the external SuperDrive for an additional cost. The other non-Retina models, 13" and 15", do come with an internal slot-loading SuperDrive. There are, as yet, no more 17" models and no announcement whether they will be released later.

  • Why does my new macbook pro have no sound?

Suddenly my macbook pro lost all sound. the mute is off and the volume is all the way up. I don't understand. Can anyone help?

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article.
    2. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    3. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and a red light is coming from it, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    4. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    5. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    6. Reset the NVRAM.
    7. Reset the SMC.
    8. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

  • Why does my brand new MacBook pro have 13 cycles on the battery right out of the box?

Why does my brand new MacBook pro have 13 cycles on the battery right out of the box? Shouldn't it have 0 because it's brand new.

Yes it should have 0.  I would return it, that means that the battery has already went through 13 full cycles.  Perhaps they accidentally resold a returned one as new.

Why does my new MacBook pro retina with 16gb ram keep randomly freezing

    Hi ..
A new Macbook Pro should not randomly freeze.
You have 14 calendar days  from the time your items are delivered to initiate a return as noted here.

  • Why does the new MacBook Pro 13 no longer come with a graphics card?

Why does the new MacBook Pro no longer come with a graphics card?  Or at least make it so you can opt for one.

I know how you feel. Your MacBook Pro has integrated graphics 384 MB or 512 MB. If you are a gamer, creative professional or just want more VRAM get a 15 inch MacBook Pro with up to 1 gig of VRAM or a windows gaming laptop with up to 16 gigs of VRAM (a ridiculous amount!). If you get a windows pc, you can always install virtual box. There is no point in buying a 13 inch MacBook Pro unless you need a lightweight laptop with all of the extra "goodies". There is also no possible way to change the graphics unless you know how to "unhook" the card from the processor and install a new one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No it does not. Look at the specs for it on the Apple Store website.

  • Does partitioning new MacBook Pro to enable adobe suite cs2 make sense?

I am a casual user of Adobe suite Cs2 and it meets all my needs perfectly. I've invested so much time learning it that I am reluctant to switch to any other programs. However, my beautiful new Macbook Pro using Mavericks is incompatible with Cs2. Is there a way to partition my hard drive so that I can use Cs2 with and earlier OS and still use Mavericks for everything else? Is it my new computer or Mavericks that's the culprit?

Intuitively, it would seem that your comment makes perfect sense

But the OP would be running CS2 in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels on his Mavericks MacBook Pro Retina which has either an i5 or i7 CPU.
The fact of the matter is that CS2 will run faster for the OP than it originally ran for him on a PowerMac with a PowerPC CPU chip manufactured back before 2006.
I hope that mclandau has use for all of the extra time that he will gain using CS2 on his new MacBook Pro Retina!

  • Does the new Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013) supports 4K via Thunderbolt/Displayport?

I understand that the new Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013 with Nvidia) supports 4K screen resolutions via HDMI at low hertz. But does it support 4K via Thunderbolt/Displayport? I read on Intel's web that the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB memory in theory can support it. Would be important as a range of new 4K 32" monitors will come out over the next year. Would be great for photo, video editing etc.

I also am very confused by this because per apple's support page it only supports 4K via HDMI at 30Hz but SHOULD support 60Hz via a mini display port 1.2 specification built into thunderbolt 2.
However, I think it does include 60Hz support (although not mentioned on apple's website).  My evidence of this is that on the ifixit teardown they found a an Intel DSL 5520 Thunderbolt 2 controller which according to Intel's and Wikipedia's website is falcon ridge which means it should support Display port 1.2 natively.  Plus, on apple's thunderbolt page they specifically mention connecting a 4K display to a macbook pro through the thunderbolt port (not which is suggested by the support page listed above):
"Now with Thunderbolt 2 built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect the latest 4K desktop displays and get double the bandwidth for your peripherals. And the two generations of Thunderbolt technology are compatible with each other."
Also, the Apple mini displayport support page has not been updated since 2012 but I believe it is just showing old information
The BIG piece of evidence against the new macbook pro's supporting 4K through the thunderbolt port is that on apple's tech specs page they specifically mention 4K under the HDMI section but make no mention of it under the thunderbolt 2 section.

  • Does the new Macbook Pro 13 2011 work with the Intel SSD?

I've been trying to upgrade my macbook pro to an ssd (using stock original 5400 rpm 320 gb HDD) but so far I've been reading for like 2-3 hrs and came to a conclusion. Intel is the most reliable and most highly recommended. However, Intel SSD doesn't work with the new Macbook Pro 13" & 17" because of some cabling SATA III issues. Does the issue still remain or has it been fixed? If it hasn't been fixed, what is the current most highly recommended and reliable and best in terms of speed, reliability, and just...best SSD available that works best with the 2011 MBP? Can anyone help me out? Ive been reading that OCZ and others are faster than Intel but less reliable (higher failure rates) and MBP can't take advantage of faster 6/Gbps RAID III or something. help me!!! Should I just wait?

If you search the web, you will predominately read about problems, not good experiences.
I don't believe Intel is any less subject to issues, than the Sandforce SSD drives.
Buy from a reliable source with a good return policy and warranty.
    OWC is well regarded.

  • Does the new MacBook pro 13" has asymmetrical fans (that the 15" with Retina) has?

The new MacBook Pro with retina display has more silent fans due to asymmetrical  fans. My question is, if this change has been applied to MacBook Pro 13" & 15" versions.
    Thanks.

    No it does not.....
The only Mac with the assymetrical blades is the 15" retina MBP.
And they are pretty darn effective(I can never hear the fans unless I open p something extremely power consuming and still they aern't as loud as my old Windows PC).
Mind you the MacBook can get a little uncomfortable if you keep the base in contact with your skin. Otherwise the fans are excellent..
