Does my partition structure look suitable for a fresh install of Arch?

I'm doing a fresh install of 64-bit Arch on my primary machine, but I want to make sure my partition structure is suitable for a long-term install (since ideally, I plan to only install Arch once). So far, this is what I plan to use on a 500 GB hard disk:
/dev/sda1 - ntfs - 70 GB (dual boot with win7)
/dev/sda2 - ntfs - 100 GB (shared between linux and win7, primarily for music)
/dev/sda3 - ext4 - 20 GB - for /
/dev/sda4 - ext4/ReiserFS - 12GB - for /var
/dev/sda5 - ext4 - for /home (sized to include the rest of the disk except for 4-8 GB of swap)
/dev/sda6 - swap - is 8GB too large? My system has 4GB, and I heard the rule of thumb that twice the memory is good to have as swap space for use with suspend/hibernate
Since I'm setting up a separate /var partition, I have a quick related question about ReiserFS. According to the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … stem_types) ReiserFS is a good choice for /var because it works well with many small files. Is this still the case? Since ReiserFS isn't being actively developed at the moment, I want to make the best choice now so I don't need to worry about reinstalling down the road.

Awebb wrote:@cfr: Uhm, now you're saying it… probably not. You will, however, need at least what's in your swap right now + the size of your ram. Or it used to be like that. It has been years
The mainline kernel compresses the ram data before writing it to swap since 2.6.37 [1]. I can successfully hibernate my laptop which has 4GB ram and only 1.9GB swap. Of course, only the amount of ram that is actually used by programs is written to swap, all caches and such are just dropped.

  • Does Mac OS make PDFs suitable for going to Press?

For some years I've been producing a series of small, relatively simple booklets (4x5", 44pp, text & scanned line-art graphics). I've been putting them together in PageMaker (v.5—yes, in OS 9), and making PDFs to go to press with Acrobat (v.5). Now I can't use PageMaker for the latest one, because it's in Japanese, which PM can't handle; so I'm trying Pages. Seems to work okay, but I'm wondering about the PDF part: Does Mac OS X's "Print to PDF" function make a PDF suitable for going to press, like the "Press" setting in Acrobat—i.e. with full-resolution graphics, etc.? (I know Mac OS's PDFs embed the fonts in the document, so that part would seem to be covered.) Anyone know if there's anything to worry about there? Anything special I need to do?
    TIA,
    Andrew Main

What I'm working on is a reprint of the Japanese version of the Thanksgiving Address for The Tracking Project, a fine organization run by a friend of mine. The Thanksgiving Address is an ancient Mohawk prayer/invocation, thanking all the elements of the world around us for their contributions to our lives. The original version takes a week to recite (and an elder who died a decade ago may have been the last man who remembered the whole thing); this is a much abbreviated version for international distribution. We produced the first edition, in the original Mohawk and English, in 1993. A year or two later, one of John's associates in Germany said he'd like to do a German version, so we did that. And so on. We just put out an Italian version, making ten different languages, each with the original Mohawk. See below the cover and one spread from the original English version, and samples from the Hawaiian and the Japanese version, which I'm working on now.
I did the original English/Mohawk version in PageMaker in 1993, and every version since except the Japanese, as PageMaker doesn't handle Japanese. All the others are in the Latin alphabet, though the Hawaiian required a specially modified Palatino font (with accented letters in ASCII slots) which luckily someone at the University of Hawaii had made up in the pre-Unicode days. In the 90s I was sending PageMaker 5 files to the printer, which fortunately they could open and work onto the press; only in recent years have I come across an old copy of Acrobat and learned how to distill the PageMaker files into press-ready PDFs.
For the original Japanese version in 1999, I took the usual layout in PageMaker, with the Mohawk text but the space for the other text blank, had it printed out at a service bureau on fine paper, then made up the Japanese text in AppleWorks, had it printed, then pasted the Japanese text blocks onto the PageMaker printout, and took it to the printer, who fortunately still had a camera to photograph it. I've been in graphic arts since the 60s, and was an expert paste-up man (pretty good on the corner print shop black-and-white camera too, as well as the IBM Selectric Composer), worked on (among others) the Whole Earth Catalog in the 70s and Stereophile magazine in the 80s.
But now it's time to reprint the Japanese version, and the translator wants to make changes, so I figured it was finally time to try updating my work into the current computer world. I have no need of InDesign (nor money to buy it—or do you have to rent it now?). I first thought of using Libre/OpenOffice (wish they'd get that straightened out) for future file compatibility, and from what I knew it seemed to have all the details I needed for this simple job. But, as a Mac user exclusively since I got my first computer in 1988, I found the program opaque, and when I early ran into a situation where a command I needed wasn't on the menu the manual said it was on, I gave up and went to Pages, which I have used a little, though there's a lot about it I don't care for. It seems like a lot of effort has been put into the façade, but some pretty shoddy work behind it.
But I've found it not very difficult to set up the Japanese Thanksgiving Address job in Pages, only I'm concerned if the printer can use it. Thus my query here. I'll be contacting the printer, and send them a sample PDF to see if it works for them. I hope I won't have to add crop marks, as from my initial look at the Manual, it seems Master Objects are only available on WP documents (which seems dumb)—which means I would have to manually add them on all 44 pages. Anyway it's a simple job, black only, so it should be workable.
Apple has moved so far from their old base of professional print designers it would be safe to say it isn't going to do anything to fix the issues.
Yes, 'tis a pity indeed. Now if you could do professional graphics on an iPad, there'd probably be a lot of time put into perfecting it. The Mac, though, and what it used to do, is old hat.
Have you thought about running a 32 bit version of OSX that supports Pagemaker in emulation?
I tried that once, back in the OS X 10.4 days, and it made my fans go wild. Anyway, the problem is that PageMaker can't work with Japanese—or I could just run it on my G3 PowerBook as I do for the other jobs.

  • Serial number for a fresh install

    Hi all,
I am in a bit of a pickle I think. I have just purchased a new computer and want to do a fresh install of CS4. I have no idea what the serial number is and I'm guessing I will need it for the installation.
I will try to give as much background info as possible to make it as easy as possible for anyone that may be able to help.
I bought the CS4 Design Premium - Student Edition - a couple of years ago. I am still studying currently, so hopefully there are no issues with validity there.
I remember I had to apply for the serial number, that is, it didn't come with the package initally. I have moved a couple of time since then and wherever I had it written down for safekeeping can no longer be found unfortunately. I remember the retailer I purchased it from, though I'm not sure they had much to do with the serial number aquisition...
I had 2 email addresses going at that stage, one of which I have since retired, so any information sent to that one (if it was even registered to that email address, I can't remember which it was for the life of me) is lost.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you in advance.
    Luke

Did you register the software? If so, sign into your account and you'll find it there.
If you got the serial directly from Adobe they should have a record of it.
    Hopefully the above will help.
BTW, the academic versions are sold based on eligibility at the time of purchase. You are permitted to use that software, within the rules of the EULA, even after you get out of school.

  • Does Foxfire offer a template suitable for a book manuscrpt? In a form publishers would want.

    Hi deb.winter1-
I do not know of any book templates offhand. You might try searching for an Add-on:

  • Why does my Hotmail page look so crude/basic since installing FF4?

After FF4 my Hotmail has blue lettering and a blue grid that is very crude and annoying. I cannot personalize it as before. Everything works fine, though it took awhile to set up the toolbar and all. I'm not very computer sensitive and I detest change so drastic.

  • Does any one have a fix for silverlight not installing?

Silverlight was causing problems so I uninstalled it and when I tried to re-install it and now it is telling me I already have the newest version of Silverlight and it won't install Silverlight.

I can't help with specifics but probably there is some residual files you did not delete that the installer is detecting.  This could be a file in your preferences (I think that will be in your hidden library folder).  With Mac applications it could also be a file in the receipts folder.  Somebody who can be more specific will be able to better aid you if you tell us exactly which operating system version you are running.  You may be able to use Spotlight to track down some Silverlight files but others may be more cryptically named.

  • HAVE A MACBOOK PRO 2006 WITH NO OPERATING SYSTEM ON IT  WHAT OSX DO I NEED FOR A FRESH INSTALL

I had to install new hhd and have no luck w/reinstall disc, so I believe I need retail disc does it matter what version of osx I use?

There were numerous MacBook Pros released in 2006. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html
The earliest came with OS 10.4.5 installed, but the max is OS 10.6.x.  The last came with OS 10.4.8 installed, but the max is OS 10.7.x.
If you are able to get the original install discs from Apple, you should probably upgrade to OS 10.6.x or 10.7.x.

  • New PC - does this look suitable?

I'm looking to replace an old PC with a custom build:
    - i7-3770 3.4GHz
    - H77 chipset
    - 16GB DDR-1600 RAM
    - 3TB HDD
    - 256GB SSD
    - DVD Writer
    - On board graphics only
    - RaidMax Super Hurricane case
    - 500W PSU
    - Win8 or 7 64 bit
    - Card Reader
    I will continue to use a 30" (2560*1600) monitor.
Does this spec look suitable for Lightroom / PSE and some basic video editing in Premiere Elements with plenty of headroom (I assume LR5 will gobble even more resources than LR4!!)?

I would look seriously at a Xeon Quad processor instead of the i7 even if the Xeon had only 2.8 Ghz or 3 Ghz.
Processor speed is not everything; you also need to look at workload, i.e. throughput.
Don't be taken in for a "gamer's PC" - a gamer needs speed above all but the games have a relatively "thin" data stream.
16 GB of RAM seems almost overkill; I have 12 GB and run Lr and Photoshop (+ a bunch of other programs) at the same time with no problems.
I would replace the 3 TB drive with 3 drives @ 500 GB each. Keep in mind that with Lr that constantly reads and writes to and from the HD, the read-and write cycles build up. If you have only one internal HD it has to do all the read-and-write cycles and that can slow down your system, i.e. your RAM and processor have to wait for the drive to spin and do its reading and writing.
But if you have 3 internal drives you are able to distribute the read-and-write cycles on 3 drives simultaneously.
I'm not sure about your onboard graphics. When I looked into the specs of my new computer (now about 9 months old) I found that onboard graphics alone would not be optimal.
Again, i think it's good enough for browsing the web and gaming. But photo editing, particularly if you have a camera with a full-frame sensor, i.e. large Raw-files, it's a different matter.
I would not go with onboard graphics alone - my personal opinion. But then again, you can try it out, and - if there's a slot for it - get a graphics card later.

  • Help me buy a new computer suitable for Arch

    Hello all Arch users.
About 1½ years ago, a mate convinced me to try out Arch Linux. It was about the same time as I also bought myself a TFT monitor. I've grown rather fond of Arch since then, and refuse to use anything else (except at work where I have to use Windoze).
But I've also been having some eye-problems for the last year or so, and I'm blaming partly my Phillips 190S monitor, and partly backlight/brightness settings in Arch, which I have been unable to change. Last thursday these eye-problems accelerated and gave me so much trouble I was unable to use a computer or TV or even go outside for days. I can't live a life that boring! :-|  I have to be able to use my computer 25 hours a day.
I've searched a bit on the forum and found that I'm not the only one having some eye-problems with Arch. One solution apparently is to use xbacklight command, which just doesn't work on my system. I found another graphics-card which I tried, but it used the same drivers, so still no xbacklight command. Anyway, I don't want to make a big story out of it either, since I've decided to buy a new computer and monitor now. I want a low-noise system anyway, so....
The monitor will be some expensive stuff that should be very kind to the eyes, so I'm pretty sure that part can't be better. But should you have a recommendation for a great monitor that's kind to the eyes, do share.
I'm thinking that the hardware otherwise might not be compatible with Arch for reasons I'm sure I wouldn't know about. Also, I'm interested in knowing if there's any graphics-cards that suits Arch better than others. And finally, my Arch system is a little broken, and a fresh install probably isn't a bad idea. (I'm no Linux hardcore user, but I definitely know I prefer any Linux distro over Windoze).
So I decided to put down the stuff I'm thinking of getting, and maybe someone will tell me if they know of any problems with that hardware and Arch, or maybe recommend me something else.
    MSI G31M LGA775 1333FSB Bulk MAT G31M, 4xSATA
    Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, 2.40GHz, 800FSB
    Ram Geil 2048 MB DDR-II PC6400 KIT
    Samsung S223 DVDRW-SA/18/18/8/SATA
    Samsung 250GB SATA II Harddisk
    NorthQ NQ-6803 52-in-1 Cardreader
There's no graphics-card on that list, because there's a built-in one one the motherboard, and I don't really need it for games, but rather system-development and such. But if you believe that a certain graphics-card will improve picture quality, or be more kind to the eyes, then do tell me. (I doubt it, but if you think so, lemme know).
Any other advises regarding brightness and be-kind-to-your-eyes-stuff is also welcome. So far I've installed www.sharpfonts.com, but it's too soon to say if it helps.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the answers.
I'll definitely look into that flourescent lighting thingy, although I think/thought I had enough light around me already.
I have also tried having brightness at 0, and even contrast at 0 also. Also using the nvidia settings.
Anyway, it would seem I've found one of the reasons. Apparently, for some weird reason, Arch hasn't offered me 60hz, but rather lower odd numbers such as 53hz. So I've been using a rather lower frequency, which logically should explain at least some of the reason.
While Windows lets me go as high as 75hz with this current 17" monitor I've tried instead of my 19" monitor, Arch won't even let me have 60hz. I've tried various xorg.conf settings, and even got one mailed to me which doesn't change anything. So that's two monitors I've tried where Arch doesn't deliver the hz I want, but where Windows does fine and more. That can't be right. I'm using the nvidia drivers, and have tried two graphics cards.
I'm buying a better monitor regardless though, something that's extra kind to the eyes somehow. I'm thinking 19-22" with some fancy techniques to reduce whatever it tough on the eyes. Maybe a fresh install of Arch will help getting the hz needed. I need to do that anyway on the new computer.
I also tried booting Ubuntu from a CD to check how that seemed, and while the Ubuntu desktop and fonts did seem more calm and eye-friendly, I must admit I'd been looking at it too much at that time to be sure I wasn't just kidding myself.

  • Restore everything but OSX for fresh install

I am looking to do a fresh install of OSX to Leopard from Tiger. Is there any way I can restore everything from the Time Capsule EXCEPT the operating system - so that I can keep the fresh 10.5.8 install, but have all the rest of my programs/files back?
    Thanks.

    sfnorton wrote:

I did add a new user (sorta like you suggest) and thought I deleted hers (I sign in as my new user each day) - but still, at times, that generic use/password comes up. For example - in Qmaster, when setting up a cluster, the generic name came up.
I don't use that app, so don't know why it's doing that.
But if you're using a different account from the old one for most everything, you may be able to delete that old account with far less trouble than erasing and trying to restore things, especially apps.
What's in that old account? Specifically, are any apps there?
So you are saying that it will ruin my TM back up if I somehow manage to get rid of her presence all together?
No. I was afraid you had data, etc., in the old account, and were trying to delete it, then restore backups from that account into yours. That's tricky, at best.
    I did the TM backup
the TM backup? You are letting TM do it's normal hourly backups, aren't you?
after changing to my new user/password. Does that help? I have all the apps and passcodes etc. So worst case is I start all over again. Ugh!
No, I see no reason for that. Unless you're having other problems, I'd recommend making sure there's nothing you need in the old account. Delete anything large & obvious. If there are any apps or data there that you need, move (or reinstall) them to the main Applications folder.
If everything still seems to work, then delete the user, but archive the home folder.

  • Installing SSD in MacBookPro 5,1 (late 2008).  Need new Mountain Lion OS for fresh install?

I'm installing SSD in MacBookPro 5,1 (late 2008).  It is suggested that a clean install be done, then use migrate to move applications and files. I am upgrading from OX 10.6.8 which came with my machine and I do not have a disc for a fresh install.  How do I get a Mountain Lion OS as a upgrade to do an install on the new hd?  I have a back up boot and system hard drive and it could be migrated to the new disk then upgraded, but I would like to start fresh.  Any suggestions either way?

I found the answer in the forum....sorry for a repeated question.  I don't know how to deleat my original question.

  • How to prepare for FRESH INSTALL?

    hi all.
i am about 2 years into my move back to mac with a small professional office and i am considering a fresh install of Lion from Snow Leopard on the Mac Pro (1st generation) and a 2009/10 MacBookPro. I believe the Mac Pro shipped with Leopard and the MacBookPro shipped with Snow Leopard but not sure if i am off by an OS release on that.
in any event, it has been a /ton/ of effort in customizing this setup and it includes an install of Mac Drive, Parallels and other software and software settings. I have also edited the registry on windows in a couple of instances and i have run a couple of Terminal customizations on the mac side.
    two questions.
    1. what should i do to prepare for a fresh install and how much time might be involved in redoing my setup?
    2. is it worth all the effort? i mean, i /do/ have a 2 TB hard drive to take the place of my existing 1 TB drive and I could use the extra space. but at the same time i wonder if a fresh install is necessary.
    TIA

If I understand correctly, you are still running SL. As I said, I'm not familiar with this when using any Windows install. If it were strictly Apple, then it wouldn't be a problem. But still if you want to do a full clean install, that would require reinstalling all applications manually. Otherwise, you would still be migrating the same files your already have.
Installing Lion over SL will give you a new OS. Unless you have hard drive issues, this should be all that's needed.
What I would do is check for any PPC applications. If you have any, then uninstall them. Check each application for complete removal instructions.
You might also use an application such as ONYX to caches, etc. Repair permissions. Just to get the system as clean as possible.
Once done, you would want to make a current backup. Maybe even a second just in case. You can always do a restore if nessary.
You could clone your system to an external drive using either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner. The advantage is that it's bootable. You could then install Lion on either the internal or external drive and make sure it works OK.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Boot Install DVD for Fresh Install

    Hello All:
I just received my new MacBook Pro ( 13", 2.53 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD ) and I am unable to use the OS X install DVD to do a fresh install.
When I put the DVD in while in OS X, it recognizes the DVD immediately and seems to function fine but when I reboot to use the disk utilities, that is when the problem starts.
I get the grey screen, then the grey apple logo, and then the DVD drive spins up and appears to be loading. After about 2-3 minutes of waiting, the screen goes black and the system is non-responsive.
I've tried multiple times and ways (option key and 'c' key) to boot it with the same results.
When I put the OS X install DVD into one of my other Macs, it starts up the utilities without issue.
For all intents and purposes, the system seems to have no issues with the DVD drive ( can play movies and read DVD-R disks ) but I cannot boot from it for some reason.
Any ideas? Could this have anything to do with the fact that this system has the 256 GB SSD?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    - Dan

Thank you for the repl Michael. It is greatly appreciated.
You are right, there isn't a need for a fresh install but being in IT, my natural instinct is to want to see how everything works if only out of my own curiosity. In this case the attempt to do a fresh install brought to light a potential issues.
I did indeed do the option key, the 'c' key, the disk utility option from the install media, as well as setting in the drive options of system preferences.
The install media is the media that shipped with the MacBook Pro so I would hope they shipped me the correct one but you make a great point and I will try double checking with them as well.
    Thanks,
