Does nvidia chipset drivers have trim support?

Specific motherboard NF980-G65, and SSD Drives in question are Plextor M3 Series PX-128M3 2.5" 128GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-249-014&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=2 and My older one ADATA S596 Turbo AS596TB-64GM-C 2.5" 64GB USB 2.0 & SATAII Internal / External Solid State Drive (SSD) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211479. I heard that using the Microsoft Drivers was better then using the Nforce Drivers from this post http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61869-ahci-enable-windows-7-vista.html?ltr=A. My ADATA SSD drive Sata port died somehow and Plextor drive is the new one ima get soon so doing some research the MB only suport Sata II  but the Plextor is Sata III and I think backwards compatable why I might not get full speed out of the drive I wana optimise it as best I can as the main Boot up drive as I have 2 matching 1 Terrybyte WesternDigital Sata drives for storage/other games installed on. So Leave Nforce drivers after I install them or use Microsoft's tryign not to install the Nforce's or do a update driver after and switchign back to Microsoft's I know both drives support Trim as via there decription and as of now on this backup Sata Drive trim command via dos promt shows trim is enabled in windows but does the motherboard/nforce drivers support it? (I will be back to check on this post for idea's sugestions and responces to any more info that is needed)

ahh okie what about AHCI for the single SSD drive not in any raid array or anything? as I was reading on another page > AHCI and SSDs
Typically, many hardware review sites, as well as SSD manufacturers are recommending that AHCI mode is used with SSD drives. However, we have run our own tests here in the forum, and we believe this is misleading, only where SSD drives are used independently (ie not in a RAID array). from the MSI HQ User-to-User FAQ Hm now that I think about it I think I ment AHCI Not Trim. Must edit the other post.

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

  • Does Firefox 7.o have a supported 64-bit version for Windows 7?

On the system requirements page for Firefox 7.0, I found the following statement: "Please note that while the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can be used to run Firefox 6, only 32-bit builds of Firefox 6 are supported. at this time."
I do not understand why Firefox 6 is mentioned on the Firefox 7 system requirements page. I have Windows 7, 64 bit version.
Does Firefox 7.0 have a supported 64 bit version that runs on Windows 7--64 bit version?

Not yet. The web page text is incorrect.

Did you follow the instructions provided by Vijay in your other thread?
Did you already install xp or do you still have Vista on it?
Slipstreaming the drivers during the install is the easy way to do it.  Copying the drivers from Vista onto a cd and using that to put the drivers on when xp prompts for drivers,  F6 when xp asks, would have been easy also.
Trying to figure out which drivers you need  after xp is installed is a little harder.
Right now, we need to know if you already installed xp or not.

  • I now have TRIM support. Now what?

Since updating to the most recent 10.6.8 Mac OS X update, my 2010 MBA now shows TRIM support for the first time.
There has been a lot of banter about the messageboards with many people stating that Mac SSD's do not need TRIM, because the pre-existent "garbage collection" functions are all that is needed.
I'm just wondering now that my Air has TRIM support, what has/will be improved, if anything?
Will I perceive any short term or long term benefits?
Moreover, is there anyting I need do to have TRIM perform it's magic? Or is the issuance of appropriate TRIM commands automatic and invisible to the user?

  • Does NVidia GeForce 8800GT have a heat problem?

I have an older heavy-duty Mac Pro running with 8-core Intel 3.2Ghz Xeon processors and 18GBytes RAM, using an NVidia GeForce 8800GT display controller driving a 30' Apple Cinema display. After the Mac Pro has been on for half a day the white semitranslucent bars start to appear and gradually the screen goes to nearly all white if I leave it on long enough. In about an hour after I turn it off, the display is fine.
What component is the likely cause of this behavior? I do not hear any fan noise. Should I?
I have seen other reports of heat problems with temperatures and fan speeds mentioned. How do I find this out for the Mac Pro? MacOS verion is 10.6.3.

Less than 80ºC (load) is desired, but up to 85ºC may be seen. A good cooler would keep the processor down in the mid 60's to mid 70's under load.
Prolonged temps at and above the mid 90's will reduce component life.
Certainly temps over 100ºC would be terminal in the long run.
One would hope to see the card run between 50ºC at idle and no higher than the mid 80's under load.
Lower load temps (mid 70's) are better.......
The 8800 GT is getting old. Any card approaching or exceeding 5 years of use should have the thermal compound replaced.
All fan equipped graphics cards need to be kept clean and dust free. A dust clogged heat exchanger is almost as bad as no cooler at all.

  • TRIM Support in Mac SSD

I am about to purchase my first Mac and Im so excited. But before I do I have a question about the SSD. I was not planning on buying the SSD, but instead just going to some 7200RPM HDD but realized the price was only an additional $90, a price you can not just go out and buy one at.
My only concern is the lack of TRIM in Mac OSX. Now, their is speculation (and partial proof) that Lion will have TRIM support, but from what I have researched TRIM is also a hardware variable and not just software. Does anyone know if the new MacBook Pro's SSDs offer TRIM support? Also, will my SSD, by Summer hopefully, be negatively effected by the few months of the lack of TRIM?
    Thank you so much,
    Ben

You do not need to run any UNIX (or any other) programs to 'TRIM' the drive. If the drive firmware supports TRIM (as all newer drives do) and the operating system supports the TRIM command, you will benefit from this feature. The way TRIM works is this:
When you delete a file from a drive, the operating system marks the space used by the file as free so it can be used again. On a mechanical hard drive this works fine and the space will get written over as needed. Unfortunately, the SSD does not know the difference between erasing a block and writing over it with new data, so they are treated the same. The problem that occurs with SSD is that each block on the drive has a limited number of write cycles it can withstand before failing so the SSD firmware tries to spread out the usage of blocks on the drive by a process called wear-levelling. This ensures that the drives last as long as they need to, but results in fragmentation of the drive. This is a lower level fragmentation than what is typically referred to when discussing hard drive fragmentation and is not really related. This low level fragmentation can result in reduced performance of the drive over time, as blocks are erased and data is moved around by the wear-levelling.
The drive manufacturers have worked wonders trying to minimize this effect with intelligent firmware, but it is still a measurable problem. This is where TRIM comes into play. If the TRIM command (a low level drive command, not something you run from within the operating system) is supported throughout the system, deleting of a file will cause the operating system to issue TRIM to the SSD instead of just marking the blocks as empty as would be done on a mechanical hard disk. The SSD then knows that these blocks are no longer needed and the drive firmware can then clean up more efficiently. The drive firmware will show the space as available (because it is) but will not actually perform a write to that part of the drive until a later time, when enough blocks are ready to be TRIM'd all at once. This works in conjunction with the wear leveling to reduce wear on the flash cells and prevent fragmentation from occurring. For a more detailed description of TRIM, I recommend checking out the articles by Allyn Malventano over at PC Perspective:
    http://www.pcper.com/comments.php?nid=7488
That site is mostly geared towards Windows users, but the basics of SSD operation are the same, and Allyn is definitely an expert when it comes to storage technology.
As far as over-provisioning goes, this provides a way to reduce fragmentation without the need for TRIM support (although the SandForce drives also can do TRIM). Over-provisioning involves setting aside a certain amount of flash memory on the SSD (7-28% typically) that is not available (or visible) to the operating system. The firmware uses this extra storage space to more efficiently defragment and wear-level the drive and it is transparent to the operating system. This is why an Intel X25 G2 drive will benefit more from TRIM support than a SandForce based drive like the OWC or Vertex series ones. The above mentioned site also has some good articles about over-provisioning, including comparisons of the same drive with 7% and 28% overhead. It boils down to this: if you have a SandForce drive, TRIM support is not as important because the drive does a good job on its own. If you use a different SSD, TRIM support is very beneficial, and we should all hope that OS X delivers full support for TRIM in the near future. Also, the added expense for the enterprise level (28% over-provisioned) SandForce drives is normally not justified, especially in a single drive setup.

  • No trim support in Lion.....disappointed!

I can't believe my OCZ SSD still does not have trim support enabled after updating to Lion. Come on Apple, even windows supports trim. Anyone else using SSD found any difference?

  • MBA, SSD, Windows 7 (or XP) and TRIM support

I have a 2011 MBA with an SSD and I want to install Windows 7 as a VM and/or Boot Camp.  Does the MBA SSD need TRIM support?  What's the best way of installing Windows 7, VM or BC, in terms of keeping the SSD healthy?
Will not having TRIM support cause SSD performance problems down the road?
Is installing XP a good or bad idea on a MBA SSD?
    TIA

You have TRIM support on your MBA.
You should have no issues on any of the scenarios you contemplate.

  • SSD Tunables? TRIM Support?

A few days ago I installed a 128G SSD in my 2008 Macbook Pro (pre-Penryn, last model with "Apple"-Keys). I previously had installed this SSD in my Linux Desktop, where it made a tremendous speed difference compared to the hard drive (which in turn is faster than my MBP HD). The SSD is quick and certainly faster than the HD, but it did not make such a huge difference as on my desktop (might have to do with the fact that I'm using FileVault on my home directory).
About the only thing that's substantially faster is starting Windows or Ubuntu under Parallels, that's really crazy fast now. Two or three times I also had the impression of a few seconds "freeze" (that should not happen with my Indilinx based SSD), but I could not reproduce it.
Now I am asking the knowledgable: Are there any settings that improve speed or lifetime of my SSD? Most importantly: does Leopard have TRIM support (my SSD does)? I recall reading an article quite some time ago that OS X would be "TRIM ready". Are there any other settings? In Linux I disabled the elevator algorithm, since it is useless on SSDs and increases latency and also set "noatime" in order to reduce writes?

MacRumors reported Apple add TRIM support for Apple SSD's in 10.6.8.  Am I reading something wrong?

  • TRIM support available in Mac OS X 10.6.8 update?

Several Apple fansites are reporting that the recently released Mac OS X 10.6.8 update adds TRIM support for non-third party SSDs, with screenshots as proof. Since I own a MacBook Pro with SSD built in, I was quite excited about this. However, after installing the update and restarting, System Profiler still says TRIM support is not available... My questions to the Community:
    * Did anyone else have this experience? Do you have TRIM support enabled after installing 10.6.8 or not?
    * Did I miss a step somewhere? Should I enable some setting manually?
    Thanks in advance. Cheers!

    Hi,
    same same.
    SSD native on a mbp Q4 2009.
I was excited to activate TRIM functionality with the 10.6.8 upgrade...no way...
I heard we still have hope with the final release 10.7
Apple, you should take care of geeks like us experiencing with SSD before all the others.
We expect you to fix the TRIM function....

  • TRIM support in Lion

I bought my mac late 2010, with a SSD harddrive. Recently I heard SSD harddrives becomes slower over time, witch is bad news in my case. But then I read Lion will have TRIM support. I cheked out my systemprofile and found out my SSD is a NVida (or soomething). Will the TRIM support in Lion only support Intels SSD? I know there are some third-party companies that offers TRIM update, but i don't trust them.
PS. I orderer my SSD thorough the apple store, I haven't built it in later.
    Nic

With 10.6.8 Trim should be enabled (check System Profiler). If not you could try Trim Enabler 1.2. Also read

  • Pavilion 15-p100dx Chipset Drivers

    Hi,
I just got the HP Pavilion 15-p100dx, i'm trying to get the chipset drivers from the support page, but i can't find them, the only option is order the recovery Dvds.
Can you give me the link to download this drivers from the support site.
    Thanks and regards

    Hi:
HP is aware of the drivers missing from the support pages issue and is working on resolving it.
It is affecting hundreds of notebook models.
Since I don't work for HP, I do not know when the sites will be operational again.
This has happened once before, so hopefully they learned from past experience how to troubleshoot the problem.
With the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, that has delayed things, I'm sure.
We are on the fourth day of this problem.
The chipset driver directly from Intel should work for you...
