Does orig. Airport card support WPA/WPA2?

Can a Mac equipped with an original Airport card (802.11b) connect to a WPA- or WPA2-protected network via a third-party router? (Any router — my question doesn't concern a particular router, but is more general in nature.) If so, are there minimum OS or other software version requirements for WPA/WPA2 support with the old card? Is there an Apple article that specifies the relevant requirements and procedures? My repeated searches for one have been fruitless, and this question comes up regularly in some forums I monitor daily where I'd like to be able to answer it confidently.

A Mac equipped with an original Airport card supports only WPA, not WPA2.
Verification of the fact that the original Airport card supports WPA is found at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107795
A Mac equipped with an Airport Extreme card (or newer) is required for WPA2 support.
I don't know of a Knowledgebase article that specifically states an Airport Extreme card is required for WPA2 support. However, that requirement is clearly stated in the older versions of Airport update software that added WPA2 support to OS X. See for example:

Does 2012 airport express support MIMO? if not, will it slow the internat speed with ipad air?

    Welcome,
Probably not, but Apple have stated recently that MIMO is build in to the new WiFi kit, see:

You may need to upgrade to a new Airport.

  • Does the Airport Extreme support HP cp1025?  There are two versions of the printer the cp1025 and cp1025nw.  I have the cp1025, and can't set it up. Is there a list of AE/bonjour supported printers?

Is there a list of AE/bonjour supported printers?

Bonjour is a transport protocol. It also provides a means of advertising a printer on a network.
Any list that shows printers that support Bonjour is generally an indication that the printer itself supports this protocol, meaning that when it is connected to the network, you can see it in your default Add Printer browser. In the case of the Airport, it also supports the Bonjour protocol and will advertise any printer that is connected to its USB port. The printer itself does not have to support Bonjour. The Airport performs this function. And like many lists, they are not kept up to date because each vendor releases several new models every quarter or half year.
There are definitely printers that don't work when connected to the USB port of the Airport. And this is more that the printer driver does not support this type of connection, mainly due to the port not supporting bidirectional communications which some printer drivers require. The Canon UFR2 and CAPT drivers are a good example of this limitation. But this is only the Mac drivers. The Windows equivalent drivers work fine when the printer is connected to the USB port.
So with you having an issue with the Windows drivers then I don't think it is a case of them not supporting Bonjour but more to do with some other component not functioning when the printer is shared by the Airport. The error message appears to have more to do with local user rights which is probably driver related. I've seen some printers that you cannot use the Windows Add Printer wizard to add them. Instead you have to use the vendors utility because of some proprietary protocol being used. Maybe this is one of those?
Now that you seen how it should work based on when you used the C3188, if you still get that error message at point 6 of adding the C1025 then it would suggest a driver compatibility issue with the Airport - which is not necessarily a Bonjour compatibility issue. So unless there was another model of HP printer driver that you could use to this C1025 and that was also compatible with the USB port of the Airport Extreme, then I would suggest your best action is to replace the printer with a model that does work. Maybe even one that has builtin wireless so you don't have to use the USB port of the Airport.

  • How does one update original airport card for WPA?

Hi, I've an earlier AX, and an original airport card that I understand can be updated to be able to be WPA compatible. How do I do this? The AX is setup for WPA/WPA2 personal, and I have no trouble joining the network from other macs, and I just learned that the original airport card is supposedly able to be updated to also handle WPA. This card is installed on a g3 imac 700 se with os 10.4.11.
I also posted this question in the airport express forum, but thought it may have a better chance of being answered here after I thought about it a bit.
    Thank you,
    ez

You can't get it to do WPA2.
You can get it to do WPA if you have the right software installed, which you probably already do:
AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network
The base station or equivalent has to be set up for 802.11b/g that is BOTH b and g, since the \[original] Airport card is 802.11b.

  • I'd like to know if mac os 9.2 can support wpa/wpa2

    hi,
i've been given a macbook pro to repair (2001) and i want to connect to a wpa/wpa2 network. is that possible ?
if not i'll advise to change router's security level but it won't be secure...

In a way, it is possible, but the portability may become limited. You could connect a wireless Ethernet bridge (also known as a gaming or media adapter) to the Ethernet port of the computer. There are wireless Ethernet bridge devices from several manufacturers (such as ASUS, Linksys and Netgear). Look for a model that is small (possibly with power supply from batteries or perhaps USB). A wireless Ethernet bridge does not (normally) require special software, and can thus be used under almost any operating system.

  • Orignal Airport card with WPA security

I have two machines as follows:
iMac G5, OS 10.4.6 with Airport Extreme
iMac G4, OS 10.3.9 with original Airport card.
Airport Express connected to cable modem (firmware v6.2)
    WEP 128 security.
When I originally set up my wireless network, the G4 would not connect with other than WEP security. There was nothing in the documentation that indicated that this would be a problem. Even the Apple Care guy was not aware of it. I don't remember how long ago this was.
Everything works great, but I'd like WPA security. Rather than "break" something that's working, I thought I ask this forum for some wisdom.
Has something been updated, either on the Mac side or the Express side to eliminate this "problem"?
    Thanks for the help,
    Bob
Flat panel G4 iMac, G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

As long as you are using AirPort software version 3.3 or better you shouldn't have a problem connecting to a WPA network. See AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network.

  • Why does my airport card randomly quit working?

I have been having alot of issues with my airport card. It randomly cuts off for no reason. If I turn the card off and then back on it will work fine for a little while before the problem is repeated. The computer isn't even a year old and it has been doing this for nearly 6 months. I was running Snow Leopard, but now I've switched to Lion and haven't had any better luck. Any help that anyone could offer on this would be GREATLY appreciated as this problem is extremly annoying. Thanks in advance.

Likely because of intermittent network problems.

  • Does this Airport card go with this Mac Pro?

    Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2Ghz 1GB RAM (2x512mb) 250GB 16x SuperDrive 7300GT
    AirPort Extreme Card
    Part Number: F8881LL/A
I also heard they were a lot harder to install now? But I'm not sure when or where I heard that.

No that card will not work with the Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro requires a combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which Apple does not sell directly to consumers. Apple expects an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to install the card.

  • Does ACR1281U-C1 cards support Java Card?

I just got my self an ACS Card reader for ACR1281U-C1 cards, but I don't know how to install my cap file onto the cards. I've read the documentations, but failed to find any hints. Does this cards even support Java Card?

and AFAIK, none are Java Card cards.
    What about
    - telling if the cards have contacts or not;
    - posting the ATR that the reader gives for the card, in contact and contactless mode as applicable?
The later could be interpreted according to the info in the spec, circa page 33.

  • HT4628 what does no airport card installed mean?

I need help, my MBP wont show airport, it says no airport installed. What should i do to sort it out. I reinstalled the mac windows but still the problem persist.
    I need help......

Does not necessarily mean there is no sim card, just that the iPhone is not seeing it. Could be its dirty, mislodged or the contacts are dirty or fault.
Take the sim card out (paperclip in small hole on the side) and rub down the contacts with a soft clean cloth, re-insert and see if the message goes away.
    Good luck.

  • Does the Airport Express support the DHCP BROADCAST flag

In trying to connect a vista laptop to an existing Airport Express Network and the internet, went ot MS Help and found an article saying Vista is set with a 0 (Zero) in the Registry (whatever that is).The comment is -
A value of 0 disables this registry entry. You can use this registry entry to prevent Windows Vista from using the DHCP BROADCAST flag. After you set this registry entry, Windows Vista never uses the DHCP BROADCAST flag.
Can someone who doesnt type in UNIX or DOS tell me what might work and if this even applies. I am not inclined to do the following -
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces \{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
    Close Registry Editor.
Hard wired to the Cable Modem the computer can connect to the internet without any of this. What in the Airport Express could be blocking this computer?

Sorry, none of the Apple products support this.

I have changed the router security settings from wep to wpa2, now I cannot connect and already tried connecting the laptop to the printer via usb for the printer to obtain the settings but still cannot connect to the network and says that the printer cannot get an IP from the router

On the front of the printer touch the Wireless button, then navigate to Restore Defaults in the Wireless Settings menu.
    Try connecting again.
