Does OS 10.3 support Security Mode WPA?

My niece has a Linksys wireless router which I cannot figure out how to connect to. She is in Windows XP. It says that its security mode is WPA-Personal. Encryption method is TKIP. And then there is an encryption key. I cannot figure out any way to know if my G4 powerbook running OS 10.3.9 supports this or where or how to enter the encryption key.
With airport running, I have been able to "see" their network. And I can get to a dialog box that prompts me for a name and password. I have entered their name and their password but I still cannot connect.
When I am at home, I have a Lynksys wireless router and have no trouble connecting. I have exhausted all possibilities that I can think of. Any help?
Thanks.

I'm answering my own question here because I found out something very hidden but very useful.
First of all, WPA is supported in OS10.3. Secondly, I was able to connect to a Windows based, WPA security protected wireless network. The first key was to download the latest Airport update available for your computer. I cannot recall the version number that worked for me but it came up recently when I ran software update. (I've been searching the apple updates pages but cannot find it. I think it was in Security Update 2006-007 - but run software update and look for Airport). Then, to make the connection, open Internet Connect. Hold down the option key and click on the Network drop down. This gave me a WPA-Personal option that was not there before. Initially, there was a double sized field to type an encryption key. However, it would not allow me to enter anything. I repeated the process and then got a field to enter a password. Instead of entering the password, you have to enter the encryption key. You'll have to get that from the person whose wireless network you are trying to connect to. Upon entering that I got connected. I wish I could be more specific but I can't locate the info I found to get me to this point. It was in a discussion group and I've been searching for the past 40 minutes without success. I initially found it using someone else's computer. If I find more I'll post it.

  • Does Airport Internet Sharing Support WIFI Mode G?

I am trying to connect a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet to the Internet via Internet Sharing. The N810 only supports B and G mode WIFI. I can't get a connection. Does Airport Internet Sharing Support WIFI Mode G? Do I have to configure for this?
    Thanks

I am trying to connect a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet to the Internet via Internet Sharing. The N810 only supports B and G mode WIFI. I can't get a connection. Does Airport Internet Sharing Support WIFI Mode G?
    Yes.
I've used my 802.11b/g/n capable MacBook to share an ethernet connection with my 802.11g ONLY iPod Touch.
Does the N810 see the network?
Does any other WiFi capable device in your home see the Internet Sharing SSID?
Did you give your Internet Sharing a password? Internet Sharing uses WEP for encryption, and the rules for creating the WEP Hex key from a text string password are different for Macs vs everyother WiFi device in the world. 1st try no password. If that works, then move on to using a simple 5 character password for 40/64 bit WEP, or a 13 simple password for 104/128 bit WEP.

  • Does WebLogic 6.1 support client mode of MQ ?

I know WebLogic 6.1 is not supported yet. But we're still using it and plan to upgrade.
AS-IS: WebLogic 6.1sp1 and IBM MQSeries 5.2 now. (using binding mode and XA)
TO-BE: WebLogic 10 and WebSphere MQ 6.02 (using client mode and XA)
We plan to upgrade MQ first, so, we need to know could WebLogic 6 supports to use client mode and XA with MQ 6.0. I only know WebLogic 8.1 is ok, but I cannot find document for WebLogic 6.
btw, is there any suggestion for this upgrade ?

    Hi,
I can think of a few things worth noting:
              (A) I don't recall there being any specific support for MQ XA in 6.1SP1 - not even in MDBs. I think its likely that your current app just calls the MQ APIs directly and manually enlists MQ with the current transaction. This is all outside of WebLogic's control and will still work. (See the interop FAQ link below for an explanation of manual enlistment.)
              (B) Since 6.0, we've added a significant set of features to aid with foreign JMS vendor integration, particularly in the area of transparent XA integration, and we've also upgraded WebLogic JMS in general. These three links are probably a good place to get started if you care to review them:
              http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/jms/interop.html
              http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/jms_admin/intro.html#jms_features
              http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/messaging.html
              (C) Very recently, I've heard that there have been some problems integrating WebLogic with MQ 6.0's "JMS 1.1 specification only" jars. These problems are being addressed or already have been addressed in newer releases but I doubt they've been looked at for version 6.0. Since its likely you're not planning to use the JMS 1.1 APIs in the very near term, I think this should not be a problem for you - you can just make sure to use MQ 6.0's JMS 1.0.2 jars.
              Hope this helps,
              Tom

  • Windows 8 Installation Disc Won't Load UEFI-only (T420s). Also does T420S support Secure Boot?

    Question 1:
I am unable to load the Windows 8 Installation DVD in UEFI (only) mode on my T420s. As a result, I can only run the installer in Legacy mode (or both UEFI/Legacy which effectively means the same thing). This in turn means Windows 8 is installed in Legacy BIOS mode.  Any idea how to install it in UEFI mode?
I am using a DVD burned using the Windows utility from the Windows 8 64-bit ISO and have followed the instructions in HT073269, however I am unable to get to step 1 of the Windows 8 install after updating the BIOS, resetting to defaults, and switching to UEFI-only. On boot, after switching to UEFI-only, I am presented with a bootloader and prompted to select which drive to boot (DVDRAM or SSD). Selecting either makes the screen go blank for a moment and then returns back to the same screen with no result.
Since then I have searched these forums extensively and Googled Technet, Notebook Review, and other sites to no avail. I've tried several several ideas, including using diskpart > clean to get the SSD in raw status (per HT051844). That did not make a difference. I also tried converting a Legacy-BIOS install of Windows 8 to UEFI using CharlyAR's instructions on TechNet (linked from another thread here). That seemed to get me to a Windows Boot Loader but still errored out and Windows Repair was unable to fix it.
    Any suggestions?
Also, question 2:  Does anyone know if the T420S support secure boot? If not, any idea if it's slated for a future firmware update?

Secure Boot is a certificate-based approach to preventing rootkits, not the same thing as UEFI. Although Secure Boot requires UEFI, having UEFI does not mean having the additional Secure Boot feature. If Secure Boot is available, typically there will be an option to enable it in the firmware configuration. Since the latest firmware for the T420S (ver. 1.35) does not have such an option, I suspect ThorsHammer is correct that Secure Boot is not (yet) supported on the T420S. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Lenovo will tell us that a firmware update is on its way though.
My understanding is that it will never support secure boot.  The secure boot support starts at Ivy Bridge and the T430s.

  • Does the Intel 82579LM NIC on the Portege R830 support Promiscuous mode?

    Hi,
I've got a work laptop (Portege R830), which doesn't want to sniff packets. I've got it connected to a Netgear Hub (DS104), along with an older notebook, and then uplink to ADSL.
Running a continuous ping to the default gateway and Wireshark on both devices and the other computer can see the pings from the Toshiba, but not vice-versa.
The Toshiba is running as an Administrator account, has the Windows Firewall disabled, and my Symantec End Point Encryption disabled. I don't have any other AV to my knowledge.
Does anyone have any ideas of services I should disable/enable, or knowledge of the features of this NIC?
According to the Intel site "Yes, all currently marketed Intel PRO/100, Intel PRO/1000, Intel Gigabit, Intel PRO/10 Gigabit, and Intel 10 Gigabit adapters support Promiscuous mode. " But the Intel 82579 Gigabit Ethernet Controller is not in the list that follows on; http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/CS-004185.htm?wapkw=%28promiscuous%29
    Thanks for your time.

Usually the firewall or Internet Security software blocks pings so perhaps try uninstalling Symantec completely. Just disabling it may not disable everything.
Another thing to try is use a Static IP Address instead of DHCP. Disabling IPv6 or installing a newer LAN driver from the Intel website may also help.

  • Security Mode option: "Capture (wlansec. wpapersharekey) WPA Personal" ?

Hi, I'm trying to support my father remotely and was reviewing his security setup over the phone, making sure everything was still okay. He has the wrt54g (I think v5 and I don't know the firmware version) - and in Wireless> Wireless Security> Security Mode he has "Capture(wlansec.wpapersharekey)WPA Personal" selected. When I set this up 6 months ago, I don't recall if I selected that and thought the docs were misprinted - or what.
I didn't bother to have my father tell me what the other choices were as I was perplexed and thought that since it says "WPA Personal" everything is normal (and since wireless connectivity works, it seems he is, in fact, using WPA). But is this setting normal? I cannnot find out any information about this setting in the docs, on this forum, google, etc. Even linksys phone support did not know. All documentation says to select "WPA Personal". Is this the same thing? Is what I'm seeing a setting in the older firmware maybe? Note - we have not upgraded firmware since the router was bought 6 months ago (lazyness).
    The client is a mac.
    Thanks
    Nancy C.

it is really normal for your router's interface to display that script of "Capture(wlansec.wpapersharekey)WPA Personal" when you are viewing that on a MAC computer.. but on the windows  (xp, 2k, ME, 98, 95, etc), it'll disaplay the normal script...

  • X220 BIOS/Firmware - does it support "Secure Boot" under Windows 8?

I am getting ready to install W8x64 Pro.  I have a X220 with the latest BIOS (1.36 if I recall correctly) using Windows 7x64 currently.  I have run the Upgrade Assistant and it says: "Secure Boot isn't compatible with your PC."  "Your firmware doesn't support Secure Boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8."
Assuming when I install W8x64 bit I have "Boot to UEFI First" and "UEFI BIOS Only" set in the BIOS - and the SSD formatted as a GPT SSD - should Secure Boot work?
The 1.36 BIOS is not listed as Windows 8 compatible.  I see there is a BIOS for the X230 that is W8 compatible but I am not going to install it.
At any rate - for any of you X220 users - you can click on "System Information" in W8 or type in "msinfo32" in the run script and it will say whether "Secure Boot" is Unsupported or On.
Here is a Lenovo link for installing W7 using UEFI but it does not mention whether you would be able to be in "Secure Mode" at the end.

Latest firmware is supposed to support Windows 8. But I don't know what support is supposed to mean... I'd say that if you've installed under UEFI and still doesn't enable, it doesn't.
Thou now that I think of... After I installed using UEFI, I had to go back to the BIOS and change some setting. Reset-some-key or something. I can't restart the computer now but whenever I restart it I'll let you know which setting it was. (it can be several days)
    Good luck.
If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

  • Mac mini on a LCD TV which does not support interlace mode

    Dear all,
I am going to buy a new Mac mini and I wish to connect it to a Samsung LCD TV 37A656A1F (serie 6.
The TV manual says that it does not support the interlace mode. I then deduce that it supports progressive mode only.
My question: Does it mean that this LCD TV model cannot be used as a monitor for a Mac mini?
Please give a help to me

All computer monitors are progressive mode displays. Therefore all computers, including the mini, are very comfortable running progressive mode. It is their natural state. It is more a problem when a computer has to run interlace mode in order to support a display. That is when there is trouble. So I think you have nothing to worry about if your Samsung runs in progressive mode.

  • Does the apple thunderbolt to ethernet dongle support promiscuous mode ?

Does the apple thunderbolt to ethernet dongle support promiscuous mode ?
I need to use the new Retina MBP as a professional laptop for work, and I need to use Etherreal. Etherreal needs the Ethernet card/dongle/chip to run in Promiscuous mode. I have heard that unblivably the thunderbolt Ethernet dongle does not support this, if so then the laptop will not pick all the packets on the wire... is this true ?
    Regs Mark.

    Hi Clinton,
Thanks for your reply, However the promiscuous mode function that I am after is a function of the Ethernet NIC hardware and driver not just the OS.
Wireshark allows the user to put network interface controllers that support promiscuous mode into that mode, in order to see all traffic visible on that interface, not just traffic addressed to one of the interface's configured addresses and broadcast/multicast traffic.
Anyone out there actually used/tested the thunderbolt Ethernet adapter to sniff traffic with wireshark (Ethereal), can you please  if it can run in promiscuous mode ?
    Thanks.

  • Does anyone know if the Nomad muvo2 xtrainer will ever be upgraded to support secure

A bit misleading, The "playsforsure" site says that the xtrainer will work on sites that require secure wma support (FYE Subscription service and Napster to go). I like the idea of renting my music instead of paying a buck a track for songs that wont be listened to in a couple of months. When I checked the plays for sure site, I saw the xtrainer listed there and liked the idea of the flash memory andnot the hard dri've (i workout hard and ride mountain bike with it). So I bought it... Straight from creative thru ebay. When I get it I find out that it doesnt support secure WMA, so unless they are planning on upgrading the firmware, am going to have to buy another one.
Does anyone know (or a creative employee?) if they will be supporting secure wma in future upgrades?
    Thanks
    Bob

It will support some types of DRM, but I think the subscription services aren't supported yet.

    Hi
I was trying to Install Oracle Enterprise Linux on VM ware version 6.
My hardware is Intel 32 bit.
However while booting from the DVD im getting an error as "Your CPU does not support long mode. Use a 32bit distribution."

I had learned that the free DVD sets that Oracle ships are always for 64-bit systems. Owners of 32-bit systems will have to either download from http://edelivery.oracle.com or copy a distribution DVD from a friend. The 32-bit media can also be ordered from the http://oraclestore.oracle.com site for about $20USD.
