Does OS safely unmounts FireWire HD's before restarting?

I have a G4 PowerBook that's being used as a web, ftp, backup, iTunes and photo server, I've upgrade to 100GB drive but still need more HD space. I recently bought a FireWire HD for more storage and need to know if the OS safely unmounts FireWire HD's before restarting?
Reason is that I have the server set so it automatically reboot periodically, so I'm not there to unmount the HD when it reboots.

Yes, as long as nothing is being written to the drive at the time external drives are safely un-mounted before shutdown and re-mounted on boot. If you have a backup of the OS on the external make sure that the PB's HD is selected as the Startup Disk in System Preferences. Otherwise, no problem.

I'm having shutdown problems again possibly due to my new firewire hard drive, the firewire driver supplied by OS X, or some combination thereof.
The issue is if I don't manually unmount my Firewire hard drive, the MacBook Pro does not ever properly shutdown and just spends its time doing the "spinning sun ray". If I manually unmount the firewire hard drives (by dragging to trash, for example) then there is no shutdown problem. Why should this be a problem at all? I don't understand. Why can't the shutdown command also unmount Firewire hard drives consistently?
My set up:
MacBook Pro <--> LaCie 120Gb firewire <--> Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus 500GB

Yeah, I've known Firewire was implemented as a network port a long time ago. The strange thing is that I'm not using the Firewire port as a network device AND it has also been deactivated. It was deleting the port that seemed to have helped it.

Maxtor OneTouch III does not mount with Firewire

My Maxtor OneTouch III does not mount with Firewire.
I changed both cables, and ports on the drive to try with my 400 port on the MacBook Pro.
The drive will start up, the light will flash, remain steady, flash again. And then just as the Mac finishes booting, the light turns off and it does not mount.
It works just fine with a USB cable. But I bought it so it could be used as a firewire drive.
Other firewire drives work.

Has this external HDD ever worked while connected with FireWire? (In other words, did the drive just stop working via FireWire, or is this the first time you've tried to hook it up via FireWire?) Does it work over FireWire on another Mac?
If the answer to those questions is no, it's likely that the firewire ports on the external HDD are bad.

Firewire, USB and the recent thunderbolt use completely different protocols, therefore there are no adapters for mutually adapting them, just a computer, which allows connecting them, and will work as an interface. For example, if you have an external disk in an enclosure with only FW connection and another one with USB connection, just your mac, having both, allows their interconnectivity.
If your mac does not have FW (the brief alu MB series, Air) you cannot connect a FW device, if only FW port is there.

I have a firewire scanner but my new computer does not have a firewire port

I have a Nikon Coolscan firewire scanner, but my new computer does not have a firewire port. Are there any suggestions on how I can continue to use my scanner? Is there some form of Firewire to USB interface?

I would think Gene's adapter will work fine, but if you are stuck, it might be useful to find larger number of Nikon users to ask. The DPReview forums come to mind, except they are split into sections. If you are on flickr, there is bound to be a general Nikon group. The Canon group on flickr gets a ton of traffic and has a trillion members. Then there are places like Fred Miranda and Luminous Landscape, that is mostly populated by grown ups with lots of knowledge. On second thoughts, forget about Luminous Landscape, unless that was a typo in your first post, and you actually have a Hasselblad or PhaseOne scanner

Which information should I gather before restarting database to troubleshoot DB related problem ?

We use oracle 11gr2 for Oracle Insight Application.
We had application login error due to probably some database miss operation.
Generally speaking, when we have some trouble in database and need to restart database, which information should I gather before restarting database for later investigation ?
Like v$session and v$SQL ,etc.

I overlooked the instructions on how to stop constant popups in safari running yosemite. I was normally experiencing same problems with yosemite like others.
IM using early 2011 macbook pro.
So i tried removing those mentioned like vsearch which i had no trouble finding in my finder, but i emptied my trashbin before restarting my mac.
now after i restarted it, my mac's applications including safari are all not functioning, its pretty much useless right now.
It prompts: (app) is unable to open because of a problem. Please check dev status etc.
i tried running through safe mode but still safari, finder or other apps prompted same thing.
CAn anyone please help me?? I messed up big time!

If you don't know, you don't use them and you can ignore that part of my comment.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive or other storage device to hold the data.
1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
If you use FileVault 2, then you must first unlock the startup volume. Select its icon ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Enter your login password when prompted.
2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

You haven't mentioned the exact version of Photoshop you are running. As the always helpful and knowledgeable JJMack told you, new versions of Photoshop do have auto save and recovery when enabled in your Photoshop Preferences.
However, no auto recovery and/or autosave is a match for a defective machine. As suggested by Mr. Cox, you should do a thorough inspection of all your hardware ASAP.
