Does OS X 10.2 has the secure delete option & erase free space

Hi All, I have an old iBook G4 1.42ghz with 1GB ram and I am thinking of putting an old disk of 10.2 onto it as I always liked OS X 10.2.
I just can't remember of this verion of OS X has the secure delete option in finder when emptying trash and also does it have the abilty to erase free space with zeros etc..

What OS 10.2 disc are you planning to use to install 10.2. If it's from another model Mac, it won't work.
 Cheers, Tom

  • Why can't the Utility function's 'Erase free space' create temporary file

I've been using erase free space without problem for some time.. Then today when I tried to use it, got an error message to say that erase free space won't work because it can't create a temporary file. I have a 320 GB MBP with 88 GB of free space.
I'd love you forever if you can help me get round this issue

Here's what I tried to say in my response that I wasn't authorize to make:
I can't seem to reply to your response BD . . . says I'm not authorize . . . so I'll try to reply to my original post.
Thanks BD for your reply.  Here's the info on the drive:  1.3 TB capacity with 1,017 GB available.  Eventually I will recycle the computer at Best Buy who guarantees the hard drive will be erased.  I just want to get all my files off first.  I'll just do another Erase Free Space and see, as you suggest, if there are any files to be zeroed out.  Maybe there aren't any.  I've extracted most of what I want but am debating how to move the entire iPhoto library to an external drive so I can access it from my Mavericks machine.  Can I just drag and drop the iPhoto Library, or do I need to export it somehow?

  • HT3680 How to get my free space back after quitting the disk utility's erase free space

    Hi,
I started the DU's erase free space--fastest way method.  When it almost completed, I had a pop up that said that I need to free up disk space.
So then i was flustered enought to just quit the program because I didnt want to free up disk space and I was frustrated.
Not knowing it would still keep whatever it was that took the remaning disk space on my Mac.
How to I get this removed so I am back to before?

Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.
    Thanks!

  • Does OS X Yosemite really improve the security of your Mac?

Does OS X Yosemite really improve the security of your Mac? OS X Mavericks seems pretty secure. Is it worth upgrading to ugly Yosemite?

As long as Mavericks continues to get security updates, and you hate so many things about Yosemite, there isn't any reason to upgrade, although disabling the recommended Spotlight options takes care of most of the "snooping":
    http://www.wired.com/2014/10/how-to-fix-os-x-yosemite-search/
You can also install Little Snitch to keep track of attempts to make outgoing connections and deny any that make you uncomfortable.
Given your concerns about snooping, you probably shouldn't use anything from Google.

  • SLOW MAC: Why does my mac run faster during the "erase free space" operation?

    Hi community!
So I've been using my Macbook Pro Late 2012 edition for just over a year and a half now, and to no surprise, I find the spinning beachball whirling away more often than I'd care to see it. So I start a full mac clean-up including deleting login items, using Appzapper to clear up my apps, using Onyx to clear up some cache elements, deleting unused files and freeing up hard drive space.
I've successfully cleared over 60% of disk space, (200GB used, 300GB free), but I find a recurring problem persisting, despite my best efforts to get rid of it. You see, every few seconds, the spinning beach ball appears and freezes up my entire desktop no matter what I'm doing. Trying even the simplest things, like opening the apps in the dock or right clicking a file takes ages, movies freeze up all the time, regardless of what app plays them, finder is slow and it has nothing to do with my ram usage (I use the app FreeMemory to check in real-time how much I'm using) or my CPU usage (Activity monitor open at all times). It has to be the drive.
So then I tried running ClamXav, and found a windows trojan, which I deleted manually, but no change.
Now, during all these stages I was regularly running erase free space opeartions (Fast x1), and noticed something curious: during the operation, my problem disappears. I still get occasional loading beach balls, and ocassional jumps in movies, but other than that, I can use my mac normally again.
So now, I'm constantly running erase free space operations and it's painfully annoying to say the least.
I've tried defragging, to no avail.
I had the problem on Mountain Lion, and upgraded to Mavericks thinking that could change it (by the way it took 18 hours to install mavericks, don't know if that's related).
In other words, I need your help. Does anybody know if I've no choice but to buy an external hardrive, backup my data, and erase my entire homedrive? Can this situation still be salvaged?
    Thanks!

My iPhoto "share" drop down menu no longer has the burn dvd option.  What do I do?

That feature was dropped with iPhoto 9.  Select the photos you want to burn to disk, export to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  menu, insert a blank disk in the optical dirive, drag the folder onto the disk icon and drag it to the Trash bin to burm.

  • 'erase free space' not secure - it doesn't seem to work?

Just wanted to point out that the erase free space option in Mountain Lion does not seem to work, at all.
A week ago I ran erase free space on my primary data drive then later, out of curiosity, I ran an inexpensive third party recovery program on the disk just to see what happened. Interestingly enough the recovery software was able to find and restore files that I had deleted over a year ago.
This has me thinking, so today I tried it again, only with a 7 pass erase this time. Nope, same thing. After a 7 pass erase (erase free space) this low end, less than $35 recovery software turns up tons of files, everything from stuff I just deleted a few days ago to stuff from over a year ago.
If I'm doing something wrong I would love for someone to point it out to me. Not that I'm toting state secrets or anything on my mac, but still - my privacy is important to me and I assume it is to others.
I'd encourage folks to try this out for themselves.
My set up is a 2011 macbook pro with an SSD as the boot drive, I've got a second harddrive installed in the optical bay and this is where my home folder lives. The secondary drive is the drive where I'm running erase free space.
The only thing that I can think of is that, even though the button is not greyed out, maybe I need to be booted to recovery in order to succesfully run erase free space on system drives?
Any input would be greatly appreciated, otherwise this seems like a pretty ugly security lapse on the part of Apple. Imagine if you're selling your machine and secure erasing before turnign it over to its new owner - and the new owner can run a $35 dollar recovery program and access everything on your machine.
    Not good.

    Thanks for your response, William.
I think that the issue may have to do with being booted to the system while trying to erase free space. I ran a 7 pass erase free space on a 1TB external Lacie drive this afternoon, the operation took a bit over 6 hours to complete and recovery sofatware is turning up nothing.
This is in contrast to the main drive, which my original post referenced, which is a 500gb 7200 rpm internal drive. A 7 pass secure erase took less than 5 minutes to complete - so, even though the drive is 1/2 the size, there's obviously something not right with the 7 minutes time to complete.
Tomorrow I'm going to try either booting to another account (which doesn't utilize this partcular disk) or booting to recovery and seeing what happens.
I have a feeling that this will solve the problem - I'll post back tomorrow evening.

  • Secure erase free space on SSHD

I have a 500Gb Toshiba SSHD installed inside my MacBook as a replacement startup drive. Using Disk Utility I have tried to erase/overwrite the free space on this HD. The "Erase Free Space" button is grayed out and hovering gives the following message: "Erasing free space not available on this type of drive".
Is there anything I can safely do to erase free space? Since I have deleted a large number of files from the HD to free up space for future work, I am just trying to be security conscious.
An aside: I have wondered if with a SSHD there is less or even no need to erase free space as there might be no residue in the memory locations to permit recovery like there is with a conventional HD, but this is speculation on my part.
    Thanks, John

A Solid State Device never writes to the same place that you read the data from.  The SSD hardware logic always allocates a new pre-cleared sector and writes to that sector, and the hardware maps that sector to the logical offset for the previous sector.  The previous sector is released to the SSD hardware to be pre-cleared at some future time for reuse as a place to write.
So zeroing SSD storage just reduces the life of the drive without actually zeroing the data you desire.
If Mac OS X is detecting that your SSHD has an SSD component, it will not do anything to shorten the life of the SSD component by doing things that are not doing what you expect (aka securely erasing data, which the SSD will NOT be doing).
If you are using an SSD type device, the ONLY way to make sure deleted files are secure after deletion is to enable FileVault so that the entire disk is ALWAYS encrypted so that deleted files are just random bits to anyone trying to access the data without the disk encryption keys.

  • Help please - message after using the Erase Free Space function in Disk Ut

Please help. I've been using my Mac Mini for 6 months and decided I wanted to securely erase previously deleted files, and found the Erase Free Space facility in Disk Utilities. So I chose the option "7-pass Erase of deleted files", and left my Mac Mini to do its business.
At the end, I got the message that my startup disk is full, but ignored that message because I understand that's normal when free space has been deleted.
After doing a Restart, things seem to be running smoothly, but I have a Warning message which reads
Warning. The following disk images failed to mount:
    Image: EFTFile1.sparseimage Reason: corrupt image.
What does this mean, please, and what do I have to do, if anything?
I'm completely new to this, so please explain clearly.
    Thanks everyone!!

Hi again, i've resolved the problem, thanks. It was my inexperience that was helping confuse the issue.
Sorry to have taken your time. Thanks again for your input.

  • Secure Erase Free Space

    Secure Erase Free Space Failed
Secure Erase Free Space failed with the error:
    Couldn't create temporary file.
Hello, I own a 15" Macbook Pro 2011 Late model but I recently replaced the hard drive with SSD and upgraded the memory to 16gb. It was working fine for about 4 months and now sometime it freezes while browsing or even opening an application. I had to restart the macbook and sometime I would get a white screen. I was able to get by the white screen by restarting constantly. I am afraid to shut this macbook down and end up with a white screen. While I got through the white screen, I was able to use the disk utility and got this message when I was cleaning up free space. My SSD has 431.82 GB free of 478.89 GB. Can anyone tell me where do I locate the temporary file or is there something else I need to fix? Please let me know. Thank you.
    Vincent

    I understands that.
But heres what Im talking about

  • After using "erase free space," hard drive has almost no available capacity

I decided to clean all the files off my iMac as I wasn't using it as my primary computer anymore. After deleting the files, I used Disk Utility and used "erase free space" with the 7x option. I also emptied the Trash folder.
When I checked the HD, I found:
    Capacity: 297.77 GB
    Available: 4.68 GB
    Used: 293.09 GB
This makes no sense to me, since there is very little on the computer (some applications). Also, before I started, I know there was about 260 GB available.
I'd appreciate some advice on how to "free up" the available space that I know must be there.
    Thanks!

Hi, sounds like the secure erase didn't finish maybe & left a big invisible file on there.
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

  • A 'cleaner' app with SECURE delete option?

    Hi all,
basically, I work for the entertainment industry and my systems are sometime loaded with very 'for your eyes only' materials, such as scripts and videos for movies still on working, etc.
As the leaking of those material may cause me serious trouble, I'm especially concerned with the 'secure deleting' of sensible files, particularly to avoid any risk in case of any of my computer being stole.
So as for cleaning/mantainance I normally use our beloved OnyX, or CacheOutX (for simple tasks) yet both lack the option of 'secure deleting' (shredding, overwriting, call it as you like) what they clean.
I went and searched for any app capable of performing such a 'secure clean' of OSX, but failed.
This is too be for me, especially for OSX itself allow to use secure VM and has Secure Trash ans Disc Free Space ereasing built right in! So basically what I'm forced to do is 'Erease Free Space' out of my HDs EACH TIME I perform a system cleaning. This is, in a word, boring. Or seriously annoying if you like.
So, any clue to help me out?

SInce there are thousands of system files scattered all over the place, and various utilities may not keep track (unless you can extract them from a log file somewhere), securely erasing the free space after using something like Onyx seems like the thing to do. There may be existing maintenance scripts out there - perhaps a script run from one of the periodic utilities that uses diskutil.

  • How can I erase My hard drive. Disk utility only gives me the option of erase free space. I have 27in iMac with Lion and 12 gb ram.

How can I erase my hard drive? Disk utility only gives me the option to erase free space.
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Drive Preparation for Lion
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU to return to the main menu.
    5. Select Reinstall Lion then click on the Continue button. You need an active network connection in order to download the Lion software.
